Rikar Sarakin |
Sorry, I voted to move on, but didn't realize there was more than one way we could go. Looking at the map, I saw we head towards O2 and see what the outcome of that is.
Misha Keroun |
Yeah, move on, but if it attacks then we fight.
I somehow also thought it was blocking our way so wasn't thinking about moving in any other direction. Either what Rikar said, or toward where the sphinx said the dragon-dude was heading.
A lot of folks don't seem to be very invested the way they used to be; I know we've been playing for a really long time and I know it's hard to keep that energy up.
However, I also presume we're getting pretty close to the end (especially since we're level 15), so let's try to keep going.
Let's prescribe some actions--we move on, defend ourselves if needed, and assume we take 10 to Perceive and explore otherwise if there are no obvious threads.
Josef Guardson |
I agree, Misha.
I've been distracted of late, will try to get more active going forward.
DM Papa.DRB |
However, I also presume we're getting pretty close to the end (especially since we're level 15), so let's try to keep going.
Yup, near the end. After the "O" dungeon, and 1 more character level (level 16), there will be a big surprise, and a final level.

I will be heading out on an extended vacation where I will have no internet access, and will be gone May 5-23. Then, May 25-28, I'll be at PaizoCon and will likely have very little time to post. Please bot me as necessary during this time.
Telman Raoul |
I agree, Misha.
I've been distracted of late, will try to get more active going forward.
Same here, real life distractions ..... but I very much want to get to the end so will work harder as well.
DM Papa.DRB |
We lost FIOS Internet/Phone/TV, Tuesday May 15th early afternoon at home, and still do not have it back yet. Opened the camper yesterday afternoon, and thank goodness the campground wifi is working here, with Internet access. I'll have a post out this afternoon. – david
Josef Guardson |
Oof GM.
CT had 2 EF1 tornado touchdowns, and a macroburst which knocked out a BUNCH of power.
Luckily, we were NE of the major damage areas, just got rain and some wind.
Telman Raoul |
We're just across the river in Orange county, Papa, also very lucky - lost cable for 1.5 days bbut never lost power. crazy stuff though!
Misha Keroun |
Sorry you've had such technical difficulties, Papa!
Josef Guardson |
Just an FYI: I will be busy this weekend celebrating my son's first birthday. I'll try to post tomorrow night or Sunday, but no guarantee. Please bot as needed, thanks.
DM Papa.DRB |
Apologies. Did not mean to disappear for a week, but between doctor appointments for me, extra shifts at the hospital, and yesterday (June 14th) was my wifes birthday, time just slipped away. I will have a post out this afternoon, moving the game forward.
Telman Raoul |
Just got home after a week in the hospital with my 15yr old son; his lung collapsed (fancy name for it is spontaneous pneumothorax) and needed surgery. Home and out of the woods now, thank goodness, but things were a bit distracting. And the wifi there sucked!!!!
Not that telman has anything that would have altered events so far, but I do apologize for not being here.
Rikar Sarakin |
Wow, Telman, I’m so sorry to hear you and your family had to go through all that! Nothing worse than having your kids in danger.
I’m glad you’re all home and he’s okay.
Josef Guardson |
Oof, that's a rough one.
Glad the kiddo is better, hope everything improves for you and yours.
Misha Keroun |
Scary! Glad he's okay.
Rikar Sarakin |
I will be camping next week, Monday to Thursday. I might have signal some of the time, but am not likely to post much. Please bot me as needed.
Pixie Rogue |
Long-time lurker here, still enjoying your game.
Re: vampires, I'm not claiming to be a rules expert, but many published adventures have set a precedent of vampires being prepared for the eventuality of some smart guy locating and destroying their coffin by placing multiple coffins in their hunting grounds to always have a fallback.
I have seen claims in vampire 'mythology' that it's not the coffin that matters, but that it contains soil from their homeland or some similar link to their origins. Thus it would be simple to have multiple boltholes for a sufficiently paranoid blood-sucking undead of certain ilk. (It always made me wonder if they needed the coffin at all if they hunted in their (mortal) home territory because they had native soil everywhere they went.)
Thanks for sharing your game, it's been great fun to follow along.
Misha Keroun |
Pixie Rogue, do you know the names of some of these published adventures? I'm curious.
The RAW refers to "its home coffin" singular. But the Bestiary I think removed some older edition fluff that clarified what the coffin was about so it's not very clear what qualifies.
The point is moot if the module specifically has something planned.
I'm just pissed I apparently forgot to replace the holy water I had in my inventory when I used the last bit up.
DM Papa.DRB |
Tomorrow is US Independence Day. Wife and I are going to be attend an all day event and James Taylor concert at Tanglewood (LINK).
No further posts till Thursday.
What are you guys going to do?
1) Investigate the sarcophagus / metal box at O7 or
2) Investigate the stone / stone door at O14 or
3) Something else?
Rikar Sarakin |
It seems we're generally heading toward the metal box and sarcophagus, so let's do that first.
Misha Keroun |
James Taylor, nice!
I'm also a bit on the run for a few days. Will try to post Thurs. Misha and I are kind of burned out on ideas, so will follow whatever the group wants to do.
DM Papa.DRB |
Hi All,
This PbP has been live for 6.5 years (January 2013), and we are coming near to the end. There are a few ways I can speed it up to the "final encounter" if youse guys wish.
As folks are fading in / out as time has passed on, I would suggest the Speed Up way, but hey, I am game for either.

Misha Keroun |
I have really been impressed at how long this game has lasted and kept everyone engaged. I am especially grateful for DRB sticking with us through thick and thin, especially when I know his family obligations have increased.
At the same time I admit a bit of burnout and would be keen to move forward faster than slower. I remember waaaay back during recruitment that DRB was clear this was to be very basically one big dungeon crawl and knew what to expect, but at 15th level (which is usually the level you've hit by the end of a major AP) and 6 years later the same -- stealth, explore, kick in the door, fight, loot repeat has gotten rather samey for me, and I'd be keen to see this come to a proper conclusion, if at a fast forwarded pace, than have it fizzle out right at the end, which I think is the risk we take at the slower pace.
Rikar Sarakin |
I think Misha has summed things up quite well, and I definitely agree with her conclusion - let's do the quicker approach and bring this game home!
DRB - thank you so much for running this game, and for having the flexibility at this stage to propose a different approach so we can make it to the end.
Rikar Sarakin |
I'll be camping again this weekend, Friday to Sunday, and unlikely to post.
Therena |
Either is fine with me, though I will admit to some burnout as well (though in my case, the burnout is for the hobby in general, and not just this game).
Quick finish is fine, though if there is an encounter tied to this sarcophagus, that might be fun to play out.
Josef Guardson |
I am torn.
Part of me wishes we could go the distance , but at this level and with this sort of dungeon, it seems like PbP kinda falls apart.
I am ok with the speed up way, if that's the group consensus.
I would also especially like to say thank you to DRB, Misha, Rikar, Telman, and Therena (as well as our previous players), this has been very enjoyable, regular, and the longest single campaign I've been involved with to date. Kudos!
DM Papa.DRB |
@Therena, the sarcophagus and metal box both contain foes that when you open them will wake and attack. The sarcophagus holds an 11th level cleric that is a mummy, and the metal box is a male half-dragon goblin Ftr4 / Mnk12, that I was going to change to a Brawler. More "fodder" to fight.
@All - Ok, Speed up it is. Every one please level up twice so you are all 17th level. Spellcasters you should consider yourself as having a full complement of spells memorized / ready to cast when you enter the "final encounter".
I'll have a post up in a while, but will hold off till at least Tuesday to give Rikar a chance to come back from camping, and Telman to check in, and everyone to level up.
-- david
Telman Raoul |
I'm the "new guy" here but agree with the fast track. like Therena I am feeling the pbp burnout - I used to have many games going at once but I've weaned it down to this one because I like it so much i want to see it through.
Having said that, I leave for vacation today and won't be back online until the 23rd .... I don't want to interfere with momentum so bit as needed.
And thanks DRB for all the dedication it took to get us here!!
DM Papa.DRB |
@Telman - Darn it man; I'll have to bot you. I see lots of arrows coming If you have not had the opportunity to level up, I'll add two levels of Arcane Archer and go from there. I do not think that we will finish by the 23rd, as this high level combat takes a while, even with the damage you guys put out, but I have seen blown saves just ruin a good battle.
-- david
edit: Above is not meant as a harsh comment. I was hoping that everyone would be able to participate in this final encounter, and am just sorry that you will miss some (most?) of it, but hope that you have a good vacation.
Therena |
We can wait a bit. Since it sounds like we’re wrapping the whole thing up before the end of summer.
Rikar Sarakin |
I don’t think we need to rush this, and would be happy to wait for Telman so we can all get to the end together. I won’t have Rikar leveled for a bit anyway.
DRB - should we add any treasure or anything? I have no idea where we stand as far as wealth by level.
Therena |
Therena would like that periapt, especially since it seems we have to give up our tears in the end.
Misha Keroun |
I think that's fine, Therena. The Maximize Rod would be lovely to have to improve my sonic spells, but it's probably strategically better to be in the hands of Josef.
Papa, am I reading correctly that it's just assumed we go through the portal and start after we've proceeded through?
I will work on leveling Misha.
Josef Guardson |
Oh Josef can do quite good work with that rod, he will also be spending more time as a dragon than you might be used to...form of the dragon 3 is quite nice
DM Papa.DRB |
The vision shows you how to open the portal to somewhere.
Yes, the Speed Up way is you go over to the O1 area, all get within the Standing Stones, then using the vision as a guide, place the Tears as shown and enter the portal and onto the final encounter.
No other treasure that I know off, unless there is still something on the loot list. I never did worry much about wealth by level in most campaigns.
Re: Holding off - Telman is out for 16 days. Between you guys leveling, a surprise, and RP at the encounter if I hold off for a week or so he should be back in time to participate in it. With a charismatic bard in the group, Telman and others did not do a whole lot of talking with the foes.
-- david
DM Papa.DRB |
Thinking about the post just above, I will hold off for two weeks and move the game forward on the 23rd of July. That gives everyone time to level, Telman to get back, and me to work out the final details of the encounter.
Please post here when you are leveled up, thanks.
-- david
Rikar Sarakin |
Hey DRB - I'm noodling around leveling up Rikar, and am pondering a feat that I wanted your approval on. The feat is Hurtful from the Monster Codex. I also have a ranger talent that I get to pick, and I can take a combat feat as an option for that. I'm thinking I'd maybe take Cornugon Smash also. This would let me do an Intimidate check when I do damage, and succeeding at that would give me an additional attack against the target of my Intimidate.
I'm not sure if this is the direction I' ll go, but I thought I'd see if you were okay with Hurtful, since the Monster Codex isn't necessarily a player resource.
Misha Keroun |
DRB I got a note on my calendar to get it done by Sunday. No worries. Just have had a busy week.
