A Small Celebration
Date: 9 Desnus 4712

Hosted with Harlan's special chili, you have a modest feast, inviting your friends and companions for what seems the first night in several weeks or months that you haven't been traveling or on a specific mission. Not only a chance to unwind, it is a time to catch up with some of the friends you have not spent much time with recently. Ameiko joins Kiyomi for musical accompaniment, playing a soothing tune on her samisen, while Sandru trades jokes with Harlan keeping the mood light-hearted. Koya tells of her exotic discoveries in Enganoka and Sakakabe, while Hirabashi Jiro happily fills in details of the nuances of Minkaian and Tian culture. Kelda stays close to Malnival, happy for his return and proudly showing off her growing baby bump. Shalelu maintains a companionable silence in the back. Later, Hatsue (under the influence of a few saki drinks) displays a martial kata dance in fluid time with the music. As the night deepens, the party unravels slowly as singles and couples split off for bed, or (later) pass out by the fireplace.

The next couple weeks pass relatively quickly... (I would love to run some flex-time sidebars for the down time. If there are any specifics you wish to pursue, please ask!)

One More Step...
Date: 23 Desnus 4712

Mid-morning on a warm spring day late in the month, you gather at the common hall to discuss the progress of the resistance. As he does every morning, Hirabashi Jiro reads to you the new reports and intelligence.

In the past few weeks, the size and influence of your force has grown considerably. With Sikutsu Itsuru officially ruling the northwestern province and openly declaring support for Ameiko's claim, several other daimyo in the surrounding provinces have been emboldened to stand up against the Jade Regent. Messengers with declarations of allegiance and vows of support have flowed in steadily.

Inspired by Hirabashi Jiro's leadership and fealty to Ameiko, many ronin -- most who lost their samurai status due to a clash with the Jade Regent's policies and cronies -- have flocked to Seinaru Heikiko. Jiro's force has swollen to over two thousand strong. In addition, Itsuru gained the fealty of most of his brother's samurai, and also controls the provincial army. Support of the nobility and merchants keep your forces well-fed and equipped.

Male Human (Tian) Samurai 13

"Now we have word that confirms yesterday's rumor: the Jade Regent has pulled back his loyal forces, essentially abandoning the northern and eastern provinces, and formed a tight blockade around Kasai. The Typhoon Guard -- the majority of which I suspect are oni -- comprise the bulk of his army. They are formidable foes, and though we have done well, we are still outnumbered. And Kasai is a long march from here."

"An idle army is a dangerous thing... time and inaction can whittle away even the best discipline. I think it is time we put them into action. The question is where." He points to the map as he speaks, indicating a city on the west coast. "Akafuto is a major port city, second only to Kasai and a major trade hub between Minkai and Tian-Xia. The Jade Regent has left a strong force to hold the city, under the control of a puppet governor. A direct assault would be suicide, but I think we can draw the holding force out. I see two possible plans: one, attack the woodlands to cut off the lumber supply -- the city's major trade source, or two, seize river ports along the Tagiryu to halt all river traffic. Both would have a significant enough impact to draw a reaction from Akafuto's governor."

"Any suggestions or other possible plans I'm not seeing?"

Minkai map added to the journal on Roll20.

Downtime

Over a fire one evening as the weeks dwindle by and the excitement falls, Parity finds Ame.

"A rare chance to breathe, eh? I know you've spent a ton of time contemplating this, but are you ready to wear the mantle now? There's no backing out. We've traveled thousands of miles, spilled buckets of blood, lost friends and have now inspired half a country. Time for you to be the Empress they need."

The plan

"I like the idea of taking the river. If things go badly, we are more likely to have a way out and the advantage to owning that supply line seems huge."

Malnival thinks for a moment and then nods his head. "I agree, the river could be used to gain supplies for a siege if it comes to it. What do we have to possibly blockade a city such as this?"

After allowing himself some moderate enjoyment of the party, Heng becomes quite driven in his preparations for war. Long hours are spent in meditation and combat training. He scours the camp for any books or scrolls on history or strategy. Even his down time with Koya and Hatsue feel somewhat forced and focused on discussions about what he is currently reading or war preparations. He even neglects his religious observations finding them less applicable to immediate concerns which troubles his more devout friends.

The Plan

Heng rubs his head as he ponders the question. Finally, he nods. "I agree controlling the river is best. It will draw more attention and limit their trade with the interior."

Male Human (Tian) Samurai 13

The Plan

Jiro nods, "As Parity says, controlling the river will also give us a fast line of communication, should we need it." To Malnival, he adds, "A siege we must avoid at all costs... at least in the traditional sense. We do not have the numbers or the time, and it would play into the enemy's strength. We must draw their forces into the field to have an even shot."

"We are prepared to march within a few days. We will procure some barges and make our way across Lake Tsukishuzuku and south. I estimate it will take us a couple weeks to reach the enemy lines." He turns to Ameiko, "With your permission, this humble servant would have the greatest honor to lead your forces in the field." He bows his head respectfully.

Female Human (Tian) Aristocrat 1 / Bard 12 (Court Bard)

The Plan

Ameiko smiles and nods, "Of course, Jiro. I can think of none more suited or capable." Jiro takes the compliment with a stern look, but you can tell he is pleased.

Downtime

Ameiko chuckles and shakes her head. "I don't think I could ever possibly be prepared enough. I'm glad I have you all to help guide, advise and protect me -- I'd have have never made it this far otherwise -- but I can't help but feeling a bit like a figurehead. I need to do something to earn this... not just take it because of my bloodline."

Warmind

While Heng is running through some physical exercises, he looks up to find Hatsue standing at the doorway. "Heng-san... my friend, you have been preparing quite intensely for the past week. We have not had a chance for a shogi match. Is... are you not feeling well?" She asks the last somewhat uncomfortably.

Warpigs

Heng frowns, his hand reflexively touching his scalp and then falling limply to his side. There is a touch of sadness to his voice, "Hatsue, I am sorry that I have not been present of late. I am not sick..."

His voice catches and then he clears his throat to continue. "I have not told you of my heritage other than that my father was a stranger to Avistan. I do not know anything more. He never spoke of his past, but eventually I realized that he came from the Dragon Empires."

"When we first became aware of Amieko's heritage, I felt a kinship with her though she is pure-blooded and I am a mongrel. Still, I felt a connection to her quest... but lately, now that we may be so close to restoring her to the Jade Throne... I realize just how far I am from learning anything of my own past. I hope that I survive to discover something. I know that I am not of Minkai and I cannot remain here should we succeed."

He shakes his head. "I should not think of the future though. It is only the present that matters. I feel guilty when these thoughts cross my mind. One must focus on the present and the task at hand," he finishes emphatically.

Warrywort

"No need to feel guilt. Hope for the future is what pulls us through the times of struggle. Do not completely cut it off, or try, else you lose touch with ourselves."

"When I joined Hirabashi Jiro at his camp, he was much the same... despondent, spiteful, and careless. He had lost any hope for the future. He eventually found purpose in protecting his people and taking in ronin similar straits -- myself included -- but he had no hope that things would get better until you and Ameiko arrived." She gestures around, smiling. "Now see what we've done."

I thought you and Hatsue had discussed your lineage before, and sure enough here and here you did (2 years ago, yikes), but I left you hanging in the worst way. Got distracted by the shaman hunt and never got back to it...

"When this deed is done, I will take you into the mountains to meet my foster father. Perhaps this will give you something to look forward to." She reaches out a comforting hand, but stops and pulls it back with a blush of embarrassment.

Misty water-colored memories of the way we War

Heng smiles. "That is right. I had forgotten with all that has been happening, you mentioned this mystic before." His smile melts away again. "As I said, my destiny is not here, but perhaps he can offer some guidance. Thank you, Hatsue." The half-orc bows stiffly and takes his leave.

The Plan

After the meeting with Hirabashi Jiro, Heng returns to his quarters to meditate. His mind floats free lost in a place beyond time and space, he loses himself to the flow of mystical force and allows whatever visions may come to reveal the future to him.

Kiyomi spends her time walking with Ameiko, discussing the intrigues of court politics and the many duties she will inherit as Empress. She tries not to overwhelm the woman, but rather tells her stories of past emperors and empresses who dealt with similar situations, teaching her songs that illuminate points of courtly manners and how to defuse tense situations before they become crises.

"Sometimes you may not think you deserve it, but you have to make the best of it regardless. The worst thing you can do is try and deny that it isn't that way. You'll let yourself and everyone connected to you down. You'll earn this after you're in the seat. You will have to change the way this country has been run after this long period of oppression and corruption."

Harlan spends the time cooking and reconnecting with his friends and family.

Downtime

"You're right, there's no way I can deny or shirk my responsibility here. But, I've never been much for rigid adherence to tradition, or anything for that matter -- my father would tell you as much. There's a reason I became an adventurer and didn't stick around to run the family business."

Training

Kiyomi finds Ameiko to be an excellent student. She absorbs the cultural information and courtly particulars with ease. You find a lot of common ground as bards, and are able to translate things through musical or story-like terms.

She groans and sighs a lot, though. After about the fifteenth time, she looks up and apologizes. "I don't want to let the people of Minkai down... I chafe at some of their, your...our customs, though. I'm probably going to seriously annoy or insult some people. Not intentionally, of course."

AC 18, T 16, FF 12; HP 102/102; F+6, R+8, W+11; Perc +17;

Kiyomi smiles, and not for the first time. "You are the Empress. You will annoy no one. The people will see your intentions are pure, unlike the Regent, and they will forgive many small mistakes. For they understand that an Empress, like any other mortal, is trying her best. And they will love you for it."

Female Human (Tian) Aristocrat 1 / Bard 12 (Court Bard)

Training

Ameiko laughs aloud for a few seconds, smiling truly for the first time in a long while. "Careful, Kiyomi. Don't lay it on too thick or I may take it as a challenge." She chuckles again and winks.

Harlan Starshine wrote:
"I think the river is a good plan. We'll use the supplies for ourselves. Is there a good place to ambush the governors forces by the river?"

Jiro nods and expands upon his strategy, "It depends upon how they react. We will take boats down the river to this point, then disperse into three war parties to lock down choke points here, here and here. Then, I will send the governor an offer to surrender -- I doubt he will take it, but the challenge will be clear should he not. Then, when he--"

A thunderous crash interrupts everything, shaking the very ground and loosing dust from the ceiling. An alarm bell starts ringing and then is abruptly cut short.

"Come out little mice, hiding in your hole, or I'll take down this fortress stone by stone!" a voice booms out like roaring flames. "Show me this Amatatsu heir I've heard so much about! I want to crunch her little bones beneath my teeth and drink her royal blood! Bring her to me, and I promise you all quick deaths. Keep her for yourselves, and I'll tear every one of you limb from limb and make sweet music from your screams!"

More bells and shouts of alarm echo up from the village.

Is there an echo...? =p

Lightning-fast Heng misses Kiyomi's hastening magic, but hardly needs the boost, bounding up the stairs a few at a time. Harlan and Kiyomi follow as fast as they can, as well as Jiro and Hatsue.

Ameiko turns wide-eyed to Parity. "Majesty? Nevermind... let's go see what we're up against." She casts a spell, mirroring her image, then moves to follow Heng and the others. Shalelu is just a step behind her.

Kelda draws her sword and nods grimly to Malnival. "Lead the way, love," she grins despite having no shield or armor.

I don't have a map for the upstairs, but let's pretend your tokens moved. The stairs open into a room directly above the common room.

Once upstairs, you peer out the nearest window. The main gate of the fortress has been demolished, archway and doors included. Standing atop the rubble is a red-skinned three-eyed giant, decked in thick armor and wielding a massive tetsubo. He is surrounded by an aura of flames.

Three other giants hover around the courtyard, one behind the leader and two others perched on the jagged crags overlooking the courtyard. These creatures have two heads like an ettin, but one of the faces is serene and calm while the other grimaces in rage. These giants wield elaborate double-headed polearms.

Knowledge (planes) DC 25 or Suishen:
The leader is a fire yai oni, twisted offshoots of fire giants. They have a strong affinity for fire magic, can regenerate damage, and are vulnerable to cold.

The others are atamahuta oni, powerful combatants who can channel magic through their weapons like a magus. They also regenerate damage, which can be interrupted with fire or acid.

Added pictures of both to the journal in Roll 20.

Ref DC 22: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18

Harlan fails to get out of the cloud fast enough, but walks out onto the air and heals the group while they are still close.

MCLW: 1d8 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19

Almost completely undoing the fire cloud.

Heng closes to attack the eastern atamahuta, but clangs his fist against its heavy armor. Harlan heals most of the group before stepping out of the burning cloud.

The fire yai emits a low chuckle, and waves a huge hand at the oncoming monkeys. They are immediately engulfed in a blast of fire. The monkeys have no chance to react and are blown to smithereens.

Simultaneously and at the same time, the fire yai's third eye focuses on Heng and a glowing bolt of fire launches from it. The bolt misses by a hair (if Heng had any).

From the sky comes a female voice invoking arcane phrases.

Harlan:
Please make a DC 21 Fort save, and if that fails, a DC 21 Will save.

Malnival casts his own flying spell. Kelda coughs and winces amid the fiery cloud, which continues to burn any still within it. It also ignites the wooden beams and furniture, steadily setting the building on fire.

Harlan's body twists and molds, shrinking into the form of a small bat, flapping wings to keep aloft.

Kiyomi begins to sing as she leaps gracefully from the window, landing with a tuck-and-roll to absorb the impact.

Falling Damage (non-lethal): 1d6 ⇒ 6

Kelda nods and runs down the stairs.

Jiro and Hatsue burst through the door, joining Parity and Kiyomi in the courtyard. Ameiko, with Shalelu, Koya and Sandru in tow, emerges a moment later. "Here I am, little ol' me," she taunts the oni leader. "If you want me, you gotta come catch me!"

Tokitokito Fort save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32

Harlan flits around in a figure-eight pattern, squeaking in distress.

"I will catch you, Amatatsu. I will feast on your scorched flesh and use your bones as toothpicks!" The fire yai moves into the courtyard, its massive form flying a few inches off the ground. It points and a tall sheet of flame bursts into existence behind the group. The wall of flame is twenty feet high and completely bisects the courtyard.
