Lucrezia Villanova
Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Initiative 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Lucrezia stays close to Lucius's side as they enter the room. "Looks like this room doesn't see much use anymore."
Lucius Cassius
Perception:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Initiative:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Lucius closely follows Lucrezia into the room, looking back once to make sure no one is following them."Yes, seems like no one's been in here in ages." He says looking around the room.
DM Morvius
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Surprise Round
From behind one of the tables, obscured by some of the hanging cloth, a creature uses an ability and suddenly the room is plunged into darkness, the Light spells ceasing to function.
Unless given a method of seeing, you are all blinded by the darkness, though it is simply Darkness and not Deeper Darkness.
Lucrezia Villanova
Round 1 Init: 7, AC, 16 HP:13
Lucrezia tugs on Lucius's sleeve. "To the other room so we can see." She starts backing up to the door they just came through, hoping that the other room will be out of range of the darkness spell. She also begins singing this round.
Raven Hawthorne
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14.
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5, 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21. I will take the 21.
Round 1:
Raven backs out of the room, moving outside the confines of the supernatural darkness.
Zephyr Jeggare
Round 1
Initiative: 3
Zephyr does as she's told, double-move stumbling out the room.
As she's retreating she'll whisper Tatters (her familiar) out of a sleeve. Can Tatters detect adjacent creatures that aren't the party and alert her via their empathic link if she ends up adjacent to something that isn't a party member? I assume by now the familiar could recognize their scent.
If the familiar cannot detect by Scent or this would impose some sort of penalty she'll just leave her familiar hidden.
Lucius Cassius
Round 1 Init:13 AC 19, HP: 17/18
Lucius, blinded by the darkness waits until Lucrezia is out of the room before he backs out of it. " You first, I'll be right behind you."
DM Morvius
Yes, Zephyr, your familiar can point out anything with a scent that moves adjacent to it. It is aware of this creature when it is within 30 feet, but can't pinpoint it until adjacent as normal.
Round 1
The creature moves up into melee with Marc and use an ability, attempting to touch him.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
This is Chill Touch as an SLA, Marc please make a DC 13 fort save or take 1 str damage.
For everyone else, the Darkness moves with the creature, so anyone within 20 feet of the thing remains blinded by the darkness and those further away can see around themselves, but not into the globe of darkness.
Marc Baradin
Fortitude Save (DC: 13): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Round 2 Initiative: 17(+5), AC: 21 (touch:13, flat-footed:18), HP: 15/22, Conditions: Inspire Courage
Marc attacks the thing in the darkness.
Attack with Longsword (Power Attack, Inspire Courage):1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Miss Chance (50%, high is good): 1d2 ⇒ 2
Damage with Longsword (Power Attack, Inspire Courage): 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Hafdan Jelspar
Hafdan plunges into the darkness, voice raised loudly. Hey Marc, try not to stab me in the ass but let's see about handling this damnable thing.
Round 2:
Move into the globe of darkness
Attempted single attack against the thing: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 (16 if I somehow end up with flanking although unlikely)
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 (+ possible sneak attack 1d6 ⇒ 4)
Miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 51
DM Morvius
I'll give you the square for this attack, but you can't get precision based damage on something that has total concealment from you. I'll update if Raven's actions change the results below.
Round 2
Hafdan and Marc are able to strike it solidly with despite the darkness and it takes a step away from Hafdan and attempts to touch Marc once again.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Confirmation: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 - Confirms given the denial of DEX due to blindness
Damage: 2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2, 5) + (6) = 13
Even in spite of the critical, this attack seems to feel different than the last one and it leeches something from you with the touch.
Marc you can give me another DC13 Fort save for 1 STR damage.
Marc Baradin
Fortitude Save (DC: 13): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Round 3 Initiative: 17(+5), AC: 21 (touch:13, flat-footed:18), HP: 7/22, Conditions: Inspire Courage
Marc grunts as the thing attacks him again. He strikes back, hoping to hit the creature again before going down.
Attack with Longsword (Power Attack, Inspire Courage): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Miss Chance (50%, high is good): 1d100 ⇒ 98
Damage with Longsword (Power Attack, Inspire Courage): 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Apparently everyone is using d100 for miss chance, so I'm changing to be consistent. Also, hp changed to suit the change in damage.
Zephyr Jeggare
Round 2
Initiative: 3
Once clear of the darkness Zephyr surveys the situation and, after drawing a candle and a small bag of unknown contents, begins a spell.
Summon Monster I
This is assuming a Fiendish animal with darkvision will be able to see in the darkness. If darkvision will not allow vision in the darkness, the summon will be unable to differentiate friend from foe, or there is some other unforeseen side effect, I'll just ready a Jolt.
DM Morvius
As a general rule, you can assume that things that are likely to affect the situation will apply penalties. If you summon an aquatic creature not in water, it won't be able to attack things even if it can survive breath loss for a couple of rounds. A flying creature wouldn't be able to get high ground over the NPC in this case because the ceiling isn't high enough, etc. It will likely be difficult for the creature to maintain flanking with either Hafdan or Marc since they can't see, and you won't be able to give it any orders other than attacking enemies since you can't see it or what it is trying to attack.
Lucius Cassius
Round 2, Init:13 AC 19, HP: 17/18
Lucius, noticing that Hafdan and Marc are still in the darkness raises his bow and calls out. "Where is it?" He calls out to them. If they answer, he fires off 2 shots into that direction. If not, he holds his action for the time being.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
1d100 ⇒ 36 High is good as usual
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
1d100 ⇒ 33
And his arrows fly through the darkness unimpeded.
Lucrezia Villanova
Round 2 Init: 7, AC, 16 HP:13
Lucrezia will continue to sing and scans what she can see of the room, looking for anything else that might use this fight as cover to sneak up on them.
perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Zephyr Jeggare
Sounds good. That's all pretty standard stuff. Thanks for the confirmation.
Round 3
Initiative: 3
Within the darkness another eagle with feathers the color of blood and ash appears in a cloud of sulfurous smoke.
The eagle tears at the creature (whatever it is).
Claw I
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Claw II
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Bite
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Confirming Claw I
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 extra damage.
Zephyr readies a jolt to zap anything hostile that from the darkness.
Raven Hawthorne
Round 2:
Hefting his weapon, Raven gingerly moves forward into the Darkness, probing with his weapon as he does so.
I am happy to say that Raven takes an entire round to work-out which square the hostile is (probably) in.
Round 3:
Initiative 21, 15/15 hp, AC 17/11/16, CMD 16
Raven takes a speculative swing with his sword, at where he thinks the creature might be...
MW Greatsword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10, for 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 3) + 9 = 15 Slashing damage.
Miss Chance (High is Good): 1d100 ⇒ 24.
DM Morvius
Round 3
While Raven is unable to connect, Marc's swing cuts into the side of the creature and it falls with a thump. A moment after it falls, there is a loud pop as something explodes from the space.
Everyone within 10 feet takes 1d8 ⇒ 8 Sonic damage and needs to make a DC13 Fort Save or be deafened for 2d4 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 rounds.
As a note, the darkness persists for roughly four minutes and, when you are able to search the area, there is no corpse. However there is a pile of rags, a kukri (medium), a large amethyst set into an expertly made golden pendant (worth 300gp), and a small silvery blue vial.
You can also all take 500XP for the trap and fight.
Lucrezia Villanova
Hearing Marc take the hit and fall, Lucrezia will drop her shield with the light spell on it (leaving it out of the darkness) and go in and find Marc to cast CLW on him.
CLW 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
After the darkness fades, Lucrezia, standing by Lucius again, will ask: "Do we continue, go back, or block the doors and try to rest up here until we get our spells back and then go on?"
Spellcraft on the blue vial we find 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Marc Baradin
Marc looks over his wounds. I think I could use just about anything at the moment.
Marc has less than no knowledge of magic or how it works. And he's almost certainly had infernal healing used on him before. (He was an underground gladiator for a rather evil noble.) If he knew how it worked, or what it was, he might object.
Zephyr Jeggare
Sounds good.
Zephyr approaches and taps the wand against the flesh near one of Marc's more grievous injuries.
"Lord of Law, we beseech you. Examine the scales of this man's life and deem him worthy of spending more time among the living", she prays briefly as the spell begins to work.
Fast Healing 1 for a minute, so 10HP. Did you want a second hit? Halfan and Raven, what about you guys?
Lucius Cassius
Lucius' eyes just follow Lucrezia's form as she heads off into the darkness to save Marc. He picks up her dropped shield and hands it to her when she rejoins him. "I can keep going. But if everyone else wants to rest, I won't object."
Hafdan Jelspar
Hafdan nods politely to Zephyr as the wounds knit themselves closed. Apologies, ma'am. I've got a soldier's mind and a tongue to match but I sometimes forget I'm no longer in the corp. I'll try to avoid letting it loose like that in the future. With that he begins a survey of the room the creature was lurking in for traps or any other items of note.
Fast healing puts me at full.
If there's a door in the next room I Take 20 to search it, otherwise Perception check for the rest of the room: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19.
DM Morvius
The door is not trapped nor is it locked. It opens onto another short hallway ending in another door. This one is also unlocked and untrapped. Beyond that is what looks like it was originally quite a large room. However the majority of the room has obviously collapsed long ago. Dirt and rubble fills the area and the only thing in the room looks to be a sleeping area for a single individual. There is bedding as well as some stored food and simple tools though there doesn't seem to be anything else of note.
Lucrezia Villanova
"I'd like to vote for resting up here and then doubling back to check out that tunnel on the left. I'd rather not risk finding anything big and dangerous with no spells left and I'd rather not hike all the way back to the town to rest up."
Lucrezia sheathes her rapier and places her hand on Lucius's arm to get his attention as she quietly asks him; "I hope you know that I will have to run off and heal others at times, but that doesn't change how I feel about you." Here I was worried Zephyr might catch his eye, I never stopped to think Lucius might get jealous as well.
Raven Hawthorne
Fort: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4.
"Eh? What was that? I'm sorry, I am having difficulty hearing anything at present; that explosion has left my ears ringing..."
Once he works out what Zephyr is offering, Raven shakes his head.
"Save your wand. I will rely on the indulgence of the Lord of Hell to heal my wounds..."
CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10.
Raven is now fully healed.
Once the room is completely searched, Raven comments:
"I am happy to rest here for the night; it seems like the most defensible position we have found so far..."
Lucius Cassius
"I know you do. We all have to watch each other's backs. I know how you feel about me, I'll be fine. I'm a big boy now." Lucius whispers back with a smile.
Lucrezia Villanova
Lucrezia smiles back at Lucius, clearly happy with his words. "Now that I'm sure we're ok, let's go help bar the doors for night and get ready to share another watch."
Lucrezia will set her shield down in the middle of the room to give off light as they work to secure the room. She'll also make sure her bedroll is next to Lucius's for the night.
