As a note we have already passed my fore-knowledge of the scenario.
Hassam notes in common "The drow are an irredeemable and vile force. No good can come from allowing one to live."

DM Khel |

1d20 ⇒ 19
”We were trapped here after the battle for the city the surface scum call Celwynvian, long ago as you short-lived ones count time” the drow replies, still cowed – and keeping a wary eye on Mavarion. ”You’d let us leave?” he asks in surprise. ”I can tell my lady that, and we’ll be gone from this place.” He glances at Hassam briefly in confusion when the man switches languages, not appearing to understand.

![]() |

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
"Well, that seems like a good option for both parties involved. However," Mavarion, who usually avoids eye contact, is suddenly staring the drow full in the face, speaking as slowly and clearly as guttural Undercommon allows. "I believe we would also like to know what you and yours have been up to around here since then. You seem a little guilty about something or other."

DM Khel |

It is a peculiar sight to see the fierce-countenanced drow warrior swallow loudly in fear, but that is in fact what he does. "Well," he says somewhat reluctantly, "Inexora, priestess of Shax, has found things of value here in the ruins, artifacts of the white-bellied elves who built this place millennia ago. She seeks to leave with them, carrying them to our home."
He goes quiet, but his eyes flick briefly towards the door to the east, as if more secrets might wait there.

![]() |

Hrolf clocks the dark elf with the butt of his spear knocking him unconscious.
"You heard him. We need to hurry if we're going to catch that witch before she makes off with the relics."
We'll check out the door to the east first.

DM Khel |

Mavarion – can you update your hit points in your header? Though the last attack was retconned away, you still took damage from the previous ones, right?
The drow’s head hits the stone floor with a thud as Hrolf ends the conversation with his spear-haft. The Pathfinders open the eastern door onto a dimly-lit room. Yellow puffball fungi nearly a foot in diameter and chunks of orange and purple crystal glow faintly in the gloom of this round chamber. Strange plaster frescoes depicting acts of violence cover the walls, and in the center of the floor stands an altar made of petrified wood that supports a collection of decaying eyeballs laid in an offering bowl like a demented still-life.
A battered elf hangs manacled to the room’s south wall.
As the Pathfinders enter the room, something lets out a deafening shriek! A trio of mind-bending warps in reality appear in the shadows, and fearsome creatures emerge from each one! The first to appear seems to be little but teeth, wings and claws made of solid darkness, with the rest of its form blending into the gloom of the room. The other two figures are darkly handsome humanoids, with batlike wings, curving horns, and bestial legs.
For the shriek, make a DC 17 Will save or be nauseated for 1d4 rounds – if you fail the save, please roll the duration of your nauseated condition.

I did update them. I might be wrong, but two hits (the crits) were retconned away, and the first (and only other) attack that hit me dealt 13 damage, just enough to deplete my Force Ward, listed after burn in my Active Conditions spoiler. While we're on that subject, about how long were we interrogating the drow? I'm guessing a minute or more, I'd like to know because the Ward regenerates at 2 points/minute.

Liam – the shadow demon is using its Shadow Blend ability, so it’s basically concealed in the shadows rather than invisible. So I’m going to say you can’t see it, though I’m open to hearing opposing views or how others have ruled on this question in the past.
Mavarion’s blast, centered on a scrap of Liam’s lucky shirt, smashes the incubus! Hrolf’s spear pokes the demonic foe once, then again! The demon’s otherworldly toughness helps it resist some of the damage, and it still stands, though it’s sorely wounded.

Unable to quickly step away from his former companion, Mavarion's body makes to tumble away from the Ulfen and his long spear. The dwarf unleashes a litany of profanity within his own mind, to no avail.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Taking a few seconds extra to understand the dwarf's esoteric technique, the possessing force clumsily shapes an aether shell around a pebble on the ground and hucks it at Hrolf!
Normal TK Blast, Current Bonuses: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
Damage, Bludgeoning: 4d6 + 13 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 3) + 13 = 24
However, the ability is new and different to the possessing demon, and combined with the loss of Hassam's power, the pebble misses by several inches. Mavarion mentally grins smugly, despite all.
I figured spells Liam and Hrolf cast on me would still be working, but Hassam's Flagbearer and Inspire Courage would not as they are more temporary effects targeting current allies.

Unfortunately, I don't think Hrolf has a way to break the possession. We'll just have to take advantage of Mavarion's nice burn padding.
Hrolf growls and turns his spear on the dwarf. Celestial: "Bring him down! It's the only way to force the demon out."
Primary (aspect, flag, inspire, haste): 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 11 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 32
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 6 + 3 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 6 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 30
Iterative: 1d20 + 6 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 31
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 6 + 3 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 6 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 26
Haste Attack: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 11 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 31
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 6 + 3 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 6 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 30

Good people - I've just realized, based on the description of magic jar, that the demon could not have attacked while his soul is riding Mav's body like a poorly-trained nag. As a result, please disregard the lightning bolt attack on Hrolf and Hassam - which, now that I read his post, Hrolf has already done!

Yup!

DM Khel |

Also, I've positioned the chained up elf on the map (remember him?), in case anyone decides to set off more fireballs.

Liam readies himself to smite the shadow demon if it should show up again.
SR: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Magic Missile!!!: 5d4 + 5 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 2, 2) + 5 = 18

Is Mavarion still up?

![]() |

5 more hit points and I'll be unconscious but stable, but yeah, I'm still up.

DM Khel |

Is Mavarion still up?
No, he chucked a TK pebble at Hrolf this round already. The odd thing is, Mav's now kind of on the other team - and the shadow demon can't do anything while he's controlling Mavarion, so there isn't really anything for me to do during initiative now, until you guys put Mav down or break the control.

![]() |

I think he means 'up' as in conscious and attacking the party.

![]() |

I assumed Mavarion would be unconscious. Can I change my action to rectify his condition? If so, the magic missile will go towards him instead. I'm sorry. :(

ack sorry for delay
Hassam moves up and takes cover in the doorway as he continues his inspirational speach and stabs the dwarf in a desperate attempt to save Hrolf.
Attack: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (13) + 17 = 30
damage: 1d8 + 22 ⇒ (4) + 22 = 26

DM Khel |

Oops, got ninja'd by Mav and didn't see his post. Yes, Liam can change his magic missile target, though I think Hassam's attack would do the trick also. More post later, just got off a redeye flight.

DM Khel |

Okay, with Mav unconscious – and me continuing to play a bit fast and loose with the magic jar rules, it turns out – I’m going to call this one, rather than have you guys play ‘chase the wounded shadow-blended demon as it tries (and likely fails) to possess the other two Pathfinders in the room’.
Mavarion drops to the ground, his companions’ combined attacks overpowering even his mighty telekinetic protections. Hassam feels a peculiar pushing feeling in his mind, but it fades and then vanishes altogether. For a long moment, the room is silent, until the elf shackled to the wall lets out a low groan.

Once the shadow has left, Liam moves towards Mavarion to heal him. "Someone check on the elf there. I'll handle him."
CLW: 12d8 + 12 ⇒ (2, 4, 8, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 6, 3, 3, 5) + 12 = 67 You should be close to full sans burn.

"Ow..." Mavarion groans slightly, accepting any proferred hands up. "Sorry 'bout that, I wasn't myself. I trust you guys cleared up in there? Damn demons..."
