OH SO SCARY! This thing is actually happening!
"It calls my name, and I answer! Zinnath is the 'Oh so scary!'"
Glad to be here folks! Let's have some fun!

Zinnath the Scary |

GM, how do you interpret the following?
They often only vocalize in chirps, hisses, growls, and purrs, but can communicate telepathically with any intelligent creature.
And
Languages Draconic; telepathy (60 ft.)
Given that this definition exists.
Telepathy (Su) The creature can mentally communicate with any other creature within a certain range (specified in the creature's entry, usually 100 feet) that has a language. It is possible to address multiple creatures at once telepathically, although maintaining a telepathic conversation with more than one creature at a time is just as difficult as simultaneously speaking and listening to multiple people at the same time.
I believe I can speak and understand draconic as normal without a problem. I believe I can understand any language that I take ranks in.
I believe I cannot speak verbally languages I learn besides draconic.
I suspect I can "speak" telepathically to "any intelligent creature" even if I don't have ranks in their language.
I am hoping that I can speak telepathically to the entire party, or a group of creatures, at once. Thus I can participate in conversations, but my part is given telepathically.
Anyways, what's your ruling? Just let me know, and I'll make it work.
Also, what markup would you like me to use when speaking telepathically?

DM Jesse Heinig |

You are correct on all counts. Telepathy transcends language barriers unless otherwise specified. Essentially you think-talk at the group when discussions are happening. This also makes you an excellent translator when negotiating with other humanoid sorts who are otherwise not on the party's list of known languages, though often they will be trying to eat you anyway.
Since the usual PBP forum style is bold for speech and italic for thoughts, use bold italic.

Zinnath the Scary |

Ohhh! Kyrie is making a Magic Missile master! I look forward to seeing that in action!
I hope she doesn't mind if I ride around on her shoulder acting like she's my familiar. What bonus does she give me when near me? I know! She doubles my walking speed to 30' when I'm on her shoulder!
I could take Mounted Combat and give her AC bonuses with my ride skill!
-------------
Ohhh, Enoby is an exiled/wanted drow! Drow are notoriously evil! Perhaps I would look more majestic with a drow as my familiar?
Ohhh, an Orc, and an ogre too!!
Did I mistakenly apply for an "In the Service of the Temple of Elemental Evil" campaign? Hahaha.
--------------
Except for the Cleric of Pelor, we very well could appear as an evil party, especially with such a scary white dragon as the moral compass of the group!
---------------
I promise to not always be so chatty!

DM Jesse Heinig |

Magic missile masters are pretty nice, until you run into that enemy wizard who took shield. ;)
I'm working up the intro fiction that will tie you together and give a motivation to the group. :)

Zinnath the Scary |

Zinnath wakes at the crack of nine in the morning. His stomach tells him something is amiss, "time to eat again? Didn't I just eat yesterday? How do big dragons eat so much? For each time I eat a rat, or a snake, or a squirrel, they must eat an entire elf." Zinnath rolls himself out of the nook in the tree, spreads his wings to catch the air and commences searching for something nice to break his fast. Dragons don't like fasting, he emotes to any intelligent creature close enough to hear.

Yeah, if you could create the Gameplay thread, that would be great!
Hey Zinnath, I'm so jealous so congrats on getting a Pseudodragon as an accepted race! I didn't see that offered or I totally would'a snagged that! Mind you, how did you get 25hp? Do you have a level adjustment or sumpin?

![]() |

Deko get up, Deko drink, Deko punch people, Deko eat, Deko punch more people. That the life of Deko.

Bataleigha Silvercrest |

Hey all!
Your healer and undead-whooper reporting for duty!
Thanks for picking Bataleigha, GM. When you made the "good luck with traps" comment I considered asking to switch characters to the rogue I pitched in a PM...but then we'd have no healer! I'm guessing a healer's slightly more important (at least until we hit that first deadly trap!).

![]() |

Only reason I went with Deko is because I've really been wanting to play him. He was my very first D&D character I ever made (a custom 3.5 class half-orc) and I thought that this campaign would be fun with him. Otherwise I prolly would have gone with a rogue or something.

Zinnath the Scary |

When I saw the game file and saw all of the more monstrous races offered, I figured I'd take a swing at it. I shot the GM a note on the side asking if he would entertain the idea. He said he would.
We discussed some of the "issues" with being a pseudodragon. The have a CR of 1, which he figured was on par with some of the other options offered, and then I put a level of sorcerer on top of it.
Zinnath has 2 "levels" of dragon. Dragons are d12. 2d12=13 on average. Full hit points for first level of a class, for 6. And then a Con of 14, gives 2 hp for each of the 3 HD for 6. So 13+6+6=25. Don't worry, I don't intend to melee unless forced!
What I enjoyed the most with coming up with Zinnath was sort of his desire to be bigger and scarier than he obviously is. Mix that up with his being albino, and his claiming to be a white/ice flavored dragon was obvious. Better to be a runty white dragon than an albino pseudodragon! With the elemental bloodline, all of his energy spells can be cold based, so thematically it's there. I don't intend to take magic missile (good thing since you're set to be the queen of MM), but if I did, I'd have at least reflavored them to look like blue icicles, albeit without the cold damage, so no mechanical change.
Insofar as his spell choice. I needed cold damage, but charm person was impossible to not take, because I'm still a pseudodragon. I'm still NG, even if I aspire to being evil. Hope that all makes sense? In short, he'll talk a good game, but be a playful nice guy. Just like the goof I was trying to portray in the recruitment thread.

Zinnath the Scary |

I'm guessing a healer's slightly more important (at least until we hit that first deadly trap!).
There's more than one way to handle traps. Big dumb fighters (half orcs and half ogres, for example), make great trapfinders, and great trap setter offers. Then they need the healing. So either way, your plan works!

Zinnath the Scary |

Deko get up, Deko drink, Deko punch people, Deko eat, Deko punch more people. That the life of Deko.
"Deko, you seem like a very complex individual, the sort that Zinnath wants on his scary team."

DM Jesse Heinig |

I wanna have my fiction ducks all in a row before I post the gameplay thread. Basically I'm organizing how you all meet and get formed into a team on the basis of your various campaign traits. So a former Apprentice of Burne gets roped in because Burne presents this opportunity, while an Expatriate of Elemental Evil has managed to get the ear of someone important in town, and when word gets to Burne the two get tossed together to investigate the rumors of a new evil rising... etc.
Zinnath's basically a novelty character. His major problem is going to be that at higher levels he will be bait for lots of enemies who recognize that a spellcasting dragon(-et) is a high-priority target. Fortunately, with a half-ogre in front, it will be hard for melee enemies to get anywhere on the battlefield that your party doesn't want them.

![]() |

Zinnath has 2 "levels" of dragon. Dragons are d12.
Ha ha. Haha. ha. Um, wait, I don't get it. So, are you saying Zinnath is a level 3 character? You got 2 levels of Dragon, but only have a CR of 1?
Ummmmmm....doesn't that make you a level 3 character? Don't you now outclass all of us?
I'm not trying to be difficult, but it looks like you (with 6 elemental rays and permanent flight) do, um, everything better than I do, right now, so I'm just feeling a little useless. =)

Zinnath the Scary |

A pseudodragon has 2HD and is considered CR1. With a single level of a PC class, I should equate as CR2. I discussed this with the GM.
It is not my intent to make anyone feel useless.
Any 1st level Sorcerer with a 16+ charisma would have 6 elemental rays. As for the flight, yes, there is no way to argue that flight isn't a nice ability.
Monsters as PCs is not an exact science, to be sure.
If the GM wishes, I will give up the sorcerer level and take it when you guys all reach level 2. I believe I mentioned that to him in PM, but he said do otherwise because of how ECL, or whatever we want to call it in Pathfinder works, etc.
Really, I'm a reasonable person, so let me know what to do here GM.

![]() |

Deko fine with tiny dragon. Dragon cute and cuddly.
Nah, seriously, I'm fine with how its set up, Zinnath. Turning creatures like a pseudodragon into a PC is hard to do. But with something that low of a CR, its really not much better than a regular PC race.

![]() |

Oh, yeah, I'm not trying to be a b1tch here, I'm jus' sayin' that there's gonna be some envy. And jealousy. And then more jealosy, and some envy. There might be a few hundred questions of "Can -I- be a Pseudodragon???" but other than it's fine. =)

Zinnath the Scary |

Zinnath of course would say, "it is only natural to be jealous and want to be a dragon. We dragons are superior creatures. Smarter, faster, long lived, less susceptible to disease, immured to our specific elements. And lest we forget, we are majestic and scary!"

DM Jesse Heinig |

It's a weird case. If you go back to the old terrible Level Adjustment days of 3e, Pathfinder characters are generally tough enough to be considered LA +1 with the benefits they get in terms of favored skill bonuses, extra stat bumps, etc. (Hence why tieflings and aasimar are fairly close to core race power in PF.)
Basically consider it an experiment. My goal is not to make anyone feel useless; my hope is that different characters will have different niches and there are more things to do than just have lots of hit points!

Fezzik Faststrike |

This is definitely an interesting group. We'll have to see how the lack of a rogue affects us. We should have enough strength to break down any locked doors, although we will let everyone know we are there. For traps, we may need to carry some extra healing potions or a wand.

Zinnath the Scary |

For scouting, we do have a tiny flying kill murder machine with +21 to stealth and 120' darkvision.
"Scary dragons are not made for scouting! We are made for scaring things! Also, sorcerers are not the best scouts."

![]() |

But a pseudodragon would be effective. Go out there and show them how sneaky-scary you can be!
Also, I've decided that if Deko dies, which is possible, that I'll build a crypt breaker alchemist.

Zinnath the Scary |

Zinnath leans in, wraps his neck around Kyrie's, purrs briefly, and then promptly remembers himself. He pulls back in mock alarm, "I have been assaulted! You!" he points at Fezzik and then Kyrie, "Smash that one for her insolence! Gently though, we may need her later."

![]() |

"Awww, little dragon so cute!" Deko said before patting Zinnath's head hard gently.

![]() |

Perhaps send a PM to the bard to let them know they made it? I know that occasionally Paizo will take a thread off of a person's watch list so they might not know.

Enoby Illith'vir |

Whooooooo... Hey everyone!
Oh wow, sorry sorry. Had no idea I'd even been selected! The recruitment period went on for some time (not a criticism!) and between meatspace and another PbP I just sort of lost track of it!
Glad to be accepted! (Especially since I technically need to still put a couple touches on Enoby's fluff! >_>)
We're not quite starting up yet, from what I see? Which is good, because I'll need to orient myself back into Enoby's headspace since she'd sort of fallen by the wayside for me.
(Also really happy to see that I'm not the only character in the selected group with a joke reference in my character name.)

Enoby Illith'vir |

Kyrie, the Remorseless wrote:For scouting, we do have a tiny flying kill murder machine with +21 to stealth and 120' darkvision."Scary dragons are not made for scouting! We are made for scaring things! Also, sorcerers are not the best scouts."
With 18 AC, +7 Ref, and 25HP I think we've got our "trap disarmer" right here...

![]() |

If we do end up really needing a trap guy, anybody willing to level dip into rogue or something else with trapfinding? I vote the adorable lizard.

Enoby Illith'vir |

If our illustrious GM wants to allow Variant Multiclassing, it could make splashing some trapfinding even easier.

DM Jesse Heinig |

Got a super bad sinus infection and was out of it for a bit!

![]() |

"Deko punch sickness away!"
Also, thinking about picking up a level or two of bard, to have Deko inspire his companions with rowdy drinking songs he's picked up as a bouncer.
