Huc. |
At the mention of the cold iron weapons, Huc considers swapping weapons, but thinks better of it. Instead, he draws a vial (of Bless Weapon) from his bandolier.
”Good to know,” he whispers in response to Rowane. ”So, Arien opens the door. Fynn and I lead the charge, and we take this thing down?”
My hope: Huc buffs with Lead Blades and Bless Weapon while Arien works on the door, then Huc and Fynn push into the demon (hopefully beating its Initiative) and try to overwhelm it.
Arien Keyne |
Arien shrugs. ”I’m also eager to rid our plane of this pestilence, but it seems secured, for now. Perhaps we could deal with it upon our return, better prepared?”
I leave it to the group to decide - it seems we might have 2 in the yea category? Rowane?
DM Carbide |
The party discusses its options. While this is happening, the schir--a goat-headed, goat-footed biped with stringy grey fur over an emaciated yet muscular body--emerges from around the corner. It glares at you as it licks one tine of its cruel-looking halberd, but says nothing.
Arien Keyne |
Arien closes the door, and moves away from the foul thing.
She gathers the others, suggesting they notify Lady Origena of their plans, gear up, and head north to seach for the cave.
Huc. |
Huc lets himself be pulled away, but he clearly doesn't like this. He looks at Arien, then Rowane. "I dont like it, and I don't think we'll find anything that's gonna make killin' that thing any easier. But I ain't gonna argue too much." He gives the gate one last, reluctant look. "Let's sweep this place and go clear out that cave."
DM Carbide |
So, just to clarify: you're not going to check the upper floors before going to look for the cave?
DM Carbide |
As the party heads back towards the stairs, Huc and Arien hear behind them a clang of metal on metal.
Arien Keyne |
Arien pauses a moment to see if the noises change…
Perception, Inspiration: 1d20 + 11 + 1d6 ⇒ (13) + 11 + (3) = 27
DM Carbide |
Arien, you're pretty sure that the demon is breaking down the locked gate.
Arien Keyne |
“Damn. I guess it won’t wait, after all.” Drawing her bow, Arien repeats Rowane’s warnings.
Like all lesser demons, they resist damage from weapons that are not good or cold iron. They typically fight using halberds, which they gnaw on with their disease-laden saliva. They can inflict terrible damage with their goatlike horns; are immune to disease, electricity, and poison; and resist damage from acid, cold, and fire.
Plan? Anything that will bolster our defense would be helpful. It sounds like catching whatever disease it spreads will be unpleasant, to say the least. My suggestion is to bolster/heal Huc and Fynn, if you can’t do significant damage at range, or otherwise distract it. I will switch hit as needed.
Huc. |
Frustration paints Huc's features. He can barely keep an I told you so from his lips, though his eyes aren't quite so discrete. Doubling back to get there before the gate is completely broken, teh woodsman tosses Arien the vial he was holding. "Right before the fight, coat your weapon in that. The man said it helped kill demons and devils and s!%%." He switches out weapons, readying his cold iron morningstar, "I'll use this."
"I think we need to overwhelm this thing. Hit it as hard as we can as much as we can until it aint movin' no more." He brings a few words of power to the front of his mind, ready to offer them up as a quick prayer to the spirits around them. Any edge helps, right?
Huc will cast Lead Blades as they close the distance. There's a good chance that he'll switch his Animal focus onto himself (boosting his strength, or whatever buff will be the most useful), because Fynn's teeth are going to have a hard time penetrating that DR. Fynn will be used mostly as a tank and flank-buddy.
Arien Keyne |
Arien snatches the vial from the air, and reshoulders her bow, opting instead for the blade. “I’m really starting to resent Hunclay…”
Arien Keyne |
Arien steals a quick glance at the trio of doors…
What if Huc and Fynn ducked into one of these closets, and pounced once it passes them in the hall? Temperance and I could hold one side, while you two attack from behind?
DM Carbide |
Go ahead and position yourselves on the map as you want; you have five rounds while the demon breaks down the gate.
Huc. |
"Five of us and one of it. Mobility works in our favor, I reckon. Hittin' it in that big room seems smartest." He shrugs, releasing the spell into his own weapon, "Plus, if someone falls behind it, we want everyone else to be able to reach and heal'em. And that ain't happenin' in these tight hallways."
He ushers everyone forward, suggesting that Master Temperance and Rowane stand just outside the second door while the rest stand inside the little anteroom, Fynn and himself on the front row. "Soon as it opens this door, we hit it. Fynn will move to flank."
I just think giving it no prep time after the gate drops is smartest. And giving us mobility around it is also a benefit, I'm thinking.
Arien Keyne |
Sure. Think you can push it back?
DM Carbide |
It's Medium-sized. Also, since it's using a halberd, it's actually standing 5' back from the gate.
DM Carbide |
OK, you figure you have three rounds left before the demon breaks through the gate. Besides moving into position, what are you doing?
Rowane |
True...
Rowane cast spirit weapon and sends it in to face the demon, hoping to slow his escape.
The spiritual weapon strikes out at the demon
attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
force damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
DM Carbide |
Rowane, give me a caster level check.
DM Carbide |
It's shown as 10' wide on the map, so it's 10' wide.
DM Carbide |
Round 1:
The light crossbow of force looses at the demon as it hacks at the gate, but the agile creature manages to dodge the blow.
Is anyone else going to act this round?
Schir: AC 19* T 12* FF 15*
Master Temperance |
"Mu: the outflow of a factory should be upstream of its inflow," says Temperance to the schir, and goes on to query about rivers that loop upon themselves.
Bewildering Koan Bluff: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 12 + 2 = 34
Beat that Bluff, demon, or be unable to act on your turn!
Used 1/5 Ki.
Temperance also spends this round activating Advice.
+1 to hit and damage for the party.
DM Carbide |
What is it trying to beat the Bluff with?
Huc. |
My apologies if I belabored that point, Carbide. I've had a few combative DM's who've "accidentally" let little details like that slip by which got my characters killed. not trying to make your job harder.
Huc will cast Lead Blades on this first round (this is the first of the 5 prep rounds, correct?
Huc won't have anything to do until right before he sees that the gate is failing, then he'll draw and drink a potion of Enlarge Person.
"Idon't know about mus and rivers," Huc grunts as he glares through the gate at the demon, "But I ain't about to let this thing have a fair fight against us."
DM Carbide |
I was assuming that since Rowane's spiritual weapon only lasts for three rounds, he was going to cast it with three rounds before the demon broke down the gate.
ETA: I also said as much, a few posts up.
Huc, I'm sorry if I came across badly. The reorg at work is stressing me out.
DM Carbide |
He can't make that check, so if no one else acts on Round 1:
Round 2:
The demon pauses, clearly pondering the gnome's peculiar question.
Everyone can act!
Arien Keyne |
Blade bared, Arien sommersaults through the open gate, wheeling around behind the demon with a wicked slash.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
MW Elven Curve Blade, Inspiration: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 1 = 16
Damage: 1d10 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 = 5
Huc. |
The pair of hunters explode into the fight, taking advantage of the opening created by Master T to surround their quarry. The now-massive Huc growls out a quick command, and Fynn races in on Arien’s heels, taking up a position next to the elf as it bites at the demon’s flank. Huc releases every bit of the restless rage that had ben building on this long exploration, bringing his Lead Bladed, cold iron morningstar crashing down on its head.
Swift to activate Animal Focus on Huc (+2 Str; Fynn loses his Animal Focus bonus). Then command Fynn into flank (auto-success). Then Huc delays a second for Fynn to get into position.
.
Fynn moves into flank, tumbling to avoid AoO's (but with an AC of 26 vs movement AoO's)
Tumble vs demon's CMD: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Then it power attacks the demon.
bite: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 1 + 4 - 1 = 19
damage: 1d4 + 4 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 + 3 = 12
.
And then Huc rages and power attacks
Mods: Advice, Outflank, Power Attack, Lead Blades
cold iron morningstar: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 1 + 4 - 1 = 32 <— CRIT?
damage: 2d6 + 10 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (5, 5) + 10 + 1 + 3 = 24
— confirm: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 1 + 4 - 1 = 14
— add'l damage: 2d6 + 10 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (4, 6) + 10 + 1 + 3 = 24
DM Carbide |
The gate is two rounds from being open. I started the round count when I did to give Rowane the full duration on the spiritual weapon spell before it could attack.
Arien Keyne |
Apologies – I misunderstood, and jumped the gun.
DM Carbide |
Not as much as you might think.
Round 2:
While the demon pauses, Rowane can attack again with spiritual weapon. (Note, incidentally, that while the demon pauses it doesn't carve away at the gate, so there are still (you figure) two rounds before it will break through.)
