The scales, alas, are worthless. There are people who collect items such as these, but these have been polished obsessively and have thus lost much of their surface detail (and worth).
You'll recall that unless there's another wand around this is the one that Roaghaz used to web up the cavern.
DM Carbide |
Two days pass, uneventful save for the number of drinks and meal invitations that the party has to field, though the mood is darkened once word spreads that the kobold king named Aeteperax in its dying taunt. The tiny chance that Tula Belhaim's kill might not have been certain does not seem to trouble the Baroness, though, and her example seems to be settling things down.
The morning of the third day following Roaghaz' defeat, the Baroness summons the four of you to her manor. "Whether it's the ancient dragon returned or some newcomer taking its name, there's nothing to be done about it now. I have a more immediate task for you, since you've proved your competence and effectiveness so well.
"The day you found Hunclay's body, I sent word to his cousin in Yanmass. She's the only relative he's ever spoken of, and (if her reply is right) his only living relative besides her children. Under Taldan law, that entitles her to his estate. That's a great relief for me, actually, because the quicker we can get his belongings out of my town the happier I'll be.
"Now, she has no interest in coming here to claim it, or to claim his body for burial--they don't seem to have been on good terms. She has requested that I auction off his property and possessions, so that the proceeds (less my expenses, of course) can be sent to her.
"This leaves me with a problem. Hunclay was a capable wizard, he was known for his foul temper, and (lest I forget) he invited kobolds to come to my town for his own selfish benefit. I'm afraid his house contains all manner of traps and other dangers, so I don't dare send in my exchequer to appraise anything until it's safe. Not that he'd go in--he saw what happened to the kobolds on the front porch. That's where you come in...or at least I hope you do.
"I propose to have you explore the manor, identify any unusual or magical items, deactivate any traps, and deal with any monstrous guardians." She gives a slight half-smile. "You can send them away, too, if you like, as long as they're not in the manor when Embry and his staff are working there. Doing so with minimal property damage is preferred, and under no circumstances are you to take anything from the estate. Legally, its entire contents now belong to Hunclay's cousin, and I will not have theft here.
"That said, I'll pay you 5,000 gold pieces for your services, which should ease the pain of loss. Are you interested?"
Master Temperance |
"It would seem fair to include a finder's fee that is a percentage of the cost of items retrieved, no?" Master Temperance is, after all, a chef, and knows the value of money. It's used to buy fireburn whiskey and fancy clothing.
DM Carbide |
She gives the gnome a frosty smile. "I assumed that you'd find many items of interest when I set your fee, or it would be considerably lower."
Huc. |
Huc and Fynn had mostly tried to avoid the townspeoples' attentions. To suddenly go from social outcast to local hero was ... something he was having a hard time processing. So while much of the group might have enjoyed meals and fun, the woodsman and his mutt have been mostly absent, ranging the local foothills for pelts and pleasure.
Luckily, he had been in town for the Baroness's invitation, and sat through the entire business pitch with interest. Without seeming to think much on it, he shrugs, "I'm in." He grins, "This town seems to need an extra bit of taking care of these days."
And just a reminder: can someone ID the item we got from the caves?
2 scrolls, a wand (of Web?), and a cloak. Can someone with Spellcraft take a whack at this?
Then we have 573.75g each after the chest and the reward.
"I might do some shoppin' first, but I'm ready after that." He looks back at the Baroness. "When do we start?"
DM Carbide |
"As soon as you can. Thank you."
Arien and Rowane, comments?
Huc. |
Alright, team, let’s make some decisions. Do we want to sell the second mithral dagger (and just have those of us who might need it alchemical silver versions)?
Stuff to sell:
Mwk cold iron longsword (+165g)
mithral dagger (+251g)
Stuff for Huc to buy:
breastplate (-200g)
alchemical shortspear (91g)
Ultimately, I’d like to get him in a mithral breastplate, but I need to get my AC up in the meantime, even at the expense of mobility. :/
DM Carbide |
I know the feeling well. Let me know once you get leveled up.
Master Temperance |
Sell the dagger--Temperance can't use it (it's Medium size, right?) without penalty.
Temperance Purchase Requests
Sulfur and Honeycomb Perfume, 2 x 75 gp
Sealord Wine - 15 gp, because it has the lowest weight, haha, thanks Paizo!
Arien Keyne |
I'm back, folks. Sorry for the delay. RL drama.
My shopping list, assuming these items are available -
Sell List:
5 GP - Leather Armor
251 GP - Mithral Dagger (Group loot)
---
Buy List:
250 GP - MW Chain Shirt
450 GP - MW Composite Shortbow +1
2 GP - Arrows (40)
Regarding the unidentified magic items, can I use my extracts between missions to Identify them?
Arien Keyne |
Ah, one more thing. Huc and I were discussing the possibility of picking up a wand of Identify or CLW. Would we be able to find one of those with, say, half the charges on it? Or we could talk about pooling resources to buy one outright.
Arien Keyne |
CLW wand for sure--does no one have Detect Magic they can spam?
I think Huc is lacking Spellcraft, But Rowane has a +5, so that should work. For some reason, I thought we were lacking in that dept.
Huc. |
Alright, let's get things moving forward again. After triple-checking my loot accounting (details and math are NOT my thing), we actually have 877.75g each.
Here's a google sheet with the breakdown.
Mwk Breastplate (-350)
Alchemical silver shortspear (-91)
2 Enlarge Person potions (-100)
5 javelins (-5)
1 potion Bless Weapon (-50
1 Potion of Magic Weapon (-50)
1 bandolier (-.5)
Remaining Gold: 330.03
that leaves Huc with 330.03 gold.
I highly suggest we all pitch in to buy a Wand of CLW (187.5g from each of us) as well as maybe a Scroll of Lesser Restoration (one with 3 charges would cost us 112.5g each)
After some shopping, Huc looks ready to roll in his fancy new breastplate.
DM Carbide |
There are, as it happens, three scrolls of lesser restoration available for purchase at the Abadarian temple. A wand of cure light wounds is also available.
ETA:
The scrolls are both of glitterdust, the cloak is a cloak of fangs, and the wand of web has four charges remaining.
DM Carbide |
It's not a tower, but a manor house (and not a terribly old one, at that). Although there are windows, they are locked, and the hunter does not find any indication of hidden entrances.
The house has an upper floor roughly the size of the first floor, and an observatory rising one more story into the air from the second floor.
The porch is still decorated with the charred corpse of a kobold; no one has dared to go up to retrieve it, for fear of the wizard's well-demonstrated propensity for traps.
Huc. |
Not finding anything immediately useful, Huc settles in to wait for the team at the front entrance. When they arrive, he looks to Arien, then nods towards the (possibly trapped) door. "Seems like this might be your area of expertise."
Huc will assist Ariens efforts, casting Detect Magic and scanning the door, then using an Aid Another (if possible) to locate any traps on/around the door.
Perception, AA DC10: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23; success (+2 to Arien's Perception attempt)
DM Carbide |
Anyone else want to sound off? Master Temperance, lest I forget Draconic Perfume is indeed available to you.
Arien Keyne |
Please bot me for the morning. I have some interviews, but will check in this afternoon.
DM Carbide |
The kobold appears to have succumbed to a severe inflammation of the lungs; the marks of combustion on its body and the rigor are purely coincidental. (At least, as far as Master Temperance is able to tell....)
Arien and Huc are able to determine that although there is a trap on the door it has discharged and not been reset.
DM Carbide |
The door is securely locked.
Arien Keyne |
"Outta the way, boys..." Arien chimes, as she retrieves her thieves' tools.
Disable Device, Inspiration: 1d20 + 12 + 1d6 ⇒ (12) + 12 + (4) = 28
Perception, traps: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
DM Carbide |
The door remains unmoved.
Purely out of curiosity, what did you do with the items you took from Hunclay's body?
Arien Keyne |
Oh, yeah... Huc took those keys.
"Huc, do you still have those keys you took off of Hunclay's corpse?
If so, Arien will try them in the lock.
Arien Keyne |
Arien frowns as she takes the keys, perturbed to find a lock in this hamlet that could best her skills with a pick.
DM Carbide |
DC 30 ;-).
Sure enough, one of the keys unlocks the door.
I'll try to get the map up later today or tonight.
Arien Keyne |
Arien makes a quick mental note of which key opened the door, and speculates as to the use of the other. Pocketing the keys once more, she tries the door again.
DM Carbide |
Map is updated.
The door opens smoothly on well-oiled hinges, to reveal a well-appointed entry hall. Two expensive-looking Qadiran rugs decorate its floor, one in front of the door and one further in; the latter is surrounded by several overstuffed leather sofas. Two dozen gilt-framed paintings--portraits and landscapes, all of exquisite artistry--hang on the walls. To the north sits a large birdcage. There are dark wooden doors, polished to a high gleam, in the east and west walls, and in the southeast corner an elaborate ironwork spiral staircase promises access to both upper and lower floors.
The birdcage contains five brightly-colored and exotic songbirds. Huc infers that they may be hungry or otherwise distressed based on their frantic-sounding cries.
Arien Keyne |
Arien extends her hand, warning the others to stay back. Retrieving an arrow from her quill, she carefully probes the area beyond the door, and the rug beneath.
Perception/traps, Inspiration: 1d20 + 11 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 5 + (1) = 21
Disable Device, Inspiration (if needed): 1d20 + 12 + 1d6 ⇒ (17) + 12 + (1) = 30
DM Carbide |
Arien detects a trap under the rug in the entryway--once she disarms it, she figures out that it would trigger some sort of spell on the floor in front of the main door.
Rowane, give me a Perception check.
Arien Keyne |
Nice, Rowane!
"It looks like Hunclay wasn't much for entertaining. Be careful, there's sure to be more."
DM Carbide |
The cleric notes the presence of a faint abjuration aura inside the birdcage. From its movement it appears to be associated with one or more of the birds.
DM Carbide |
Arien is reasonably sure there are no other traps in the area, and Rowane confirms this by not having anything catastrophic happen to him as he approaches the birdcage. Once there, he realizes that the birds are sufficiently rare that they're worth at least 100 gp alive. He also sees that the largest bird has a small silver charm tied to one leg, and this is the source of the aura he detected.
The birds' food and water bowls are empty, but there's a pitcher and a partial container holding seeds and bits of dried fruit under the cage.
Rowane |
"No sense in these beauties dying off." Rowane gingerly refills the birds food and water.
"Huc,you have a better handle on animals then I. The big bird has a magical trinket I would like to look at."
DM Carbide |
The colorful quintet quickly converges on the food and water, making a sizeable dent in the supply in short order. Afterwards, they sound much less frantic.
Huc is able to recover the charm; it appears that the birds are used to being handled.
