You only had to roll spell penetration once, Rowane. The weapon missed again, though.
Arien Keyne
|
Sheathing her blade, Arien opts to send arrows through the gate, instead.
MW Composite Shortbow+1, Inspire: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 1 = 18 unsure of any penalties related, here.
Damage: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6
Master Temperance
Master Temperance calmly continues to inspire, awaiting a chance to bewilder the demon.
"...and then the calumny of the dogs was revealed, and the Court of Cats did preen and strut in the alleys of Hlanith, and sent word to Ulthar. What was I saying? Oh yes. How to heat up milk without creating a skin on the top. First, you..."
DM Carbide
No penalties for you, Arien. However, what kind of arrows are you using?
Both Rowane's spiritual weapon and Arien's arrow miss the creature.

Beset, the demon instead tries to hit Arien through the bars. The elf nimbly steps aside just before the disease-ridden halberd can strike her.

No penalties for you, Arien. However, what kind of arrows are you using?
Run-of-the-mill standard arrows, I’m afraid.
Arien Keyne

"Arien," Huc says, his eyes never leaving the demon, "Get this gods-damned door open."
”Kiss your mother with that mouth?” Arien quips back at the hunter with a grin. Dropping her bow, she retrieves her tools and sets to work at the lock with nimble hands.

Arien devotes her attention to the lock. She notes no traps, but is unable to force the stubborn tumblers into position.

Abadar's grace seems to have deserted Rowane.

Just to clarify--picking the lock is a full-round action for Arien, and opening the gate once the lock has been picked is a move action for whoever opens it.
The schir chops at Arien again, but still can't get a good angle through the gate.
Party up!
Arien Keyne

”I ain’t got a mom. Got abandoned by my dad, too. Got any jokes about that?”
Arien cackles as she fiddles with the lock. “I met my father once… wasn’t exactly a sweet bard’s tale. There’s worse things than being a bastard – you could be a bastard, and a half-breed.”
Disable Device, Inspiration: 1d20 + 12 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 12 + (5) + 1 = 34
+ 5' step back, if successful
DM Carbide
That will be successful at your initiative next round.
Huc.
"Aint we a sob story," Huc growls as his baleful glare returns to the demon. "Let me know when you're opening that door."
Once again, Delaying until the moment the door opens.
EDIT: i'm not trying to be pushy with Huc here. I'm just trying to make sure Fynn and Huc (as the party's tanks) get rushed in first ... hopefully soaking up any AoOs' for the rest of you to get to act as you desire.
DM Carbide
Huc, when are you planning to drink the potion?
Huc.
1 person marked this as a favorite.
I'm not in a hurry now that I see that the demon is happy to try to poke us through the little window ... and possibly waste the duration of the potion. At this point, Huc will simply move into combat without it since we're having to take the more proactive role in getting the door down. If Huc drinks the potion before the gate opens, he squeezes everyone else out of the room and then must open the door himself ... which means he can't immediately charge in with Fynn. Initiative is more important than Enlarge unless something changes.
DM Carbide
Rowane can act, although I think the spell has run out.
Rowane
Rowane says a little chant and then reaches to Huc...A divine shield encircles him then goes shrinks to fit his wrist. A matching bracelet goes around Rowanes..

The demon does not attack again, but retreats quickly from the gate before it can be opened. It ends up next to a pit in the floor and levels its halberd at the party, clearly waiting for anyone to close with it.
Party up!
Arien Keyne
|
Arien takes a moment to retrieve her bow, and then pushes the gate open.
”Careful…” she warns Huc with a flat stare, “it looks like its up to something sneaky.”
DM Carbide
Master Temperance, what sort of action is Bewildering Koan, and what is its range?
Master Temperance
DM Carbide
Make sure you can get within 30' with a single move action--the demon retreated quite a ways.
Arien Keyne

Arien takes a moment to retrieve her bow, and then pushes the gate open.
I did, already ^
Huc.
Sheesh. Again, my apologies. I missed that.
As the gate swings open, Huc steps aggressively forward. Seeing the demon crouch defensively, Huc digs a vial from his bandolier, popping the top with his thumb and swigging it down. Immediately, the woodsman explodes to twice his size, filling the entrance completely.
5’ step forward. Draw potion of Enlarge Person. Drink it.
Fynn lets out a low growl, watching the alien creature from across the room.

Bewildering koan!
Arien Keyne
|
Stowing her bow once again (Finally) , Arien advances, drawing her blade instead.
DM Carbide
The demon pauses to ponder.
Huc.
”Don’t block my path!” Huc growls in frustration, ”And don’t get any closer to it than you have to.” He rumbles forward, morningstar ready should it step into his reach as he orders Fynn to protect Arien.
Huc moves forward, readying a strike should the demon step into reach. He commands Huc to defend Arien for the time being.

Almost forgot:
Rowane's crossbow bolt misses the demon.
Huc.
The massive Huc steps forward, finally able to close with the vile creature. His rage, barely in check until this point, explodes. "DIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEE!" he roars as his weapon crashes down.
Activate Animal Focus (Fynn loses it; +2 Str to Huc). Move into melee (directly in front of the demon, trying to deny its ability to use its halberd). That provokes unless Mr. T’s Koan denies it (please please please). Then Rage + power attack it with his Enlarged, Lead Bladed cold iron morningstar.

Technical question: Can we occupy the squares around the pit (squares that have portions of the pit contained in them)? If so, does it appear to the average person that it would be difficult (aside from the chance of being knocked in)?
DM Carbide
Arien, you can occupy those squares, but the ones that are less than a square across are difficult terrain.

The demon reflexively strikes at Huc as the hunter closes, but is apparently distracted by the koan and misses.
And can I say that making Bewildering Koan *not* a mind-affecting effect seems to me to be kind of ridiculous?
Huc hits and severely damages the demon, but does not take it down.
Arien and Master Temperance can act!
