With few options available, Arien delays.

The demon grins, lowers its head, and gores Huc solidly with its goatlike horns! Huc, take 16 HP.
Party up!
Gore PA damage: 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
Huc. |
Huc's roars with mixed pain and anger. He staggers at the gut wound. Despite clearly being grievously wounded, the woodsman fights on, though his aim is poor.
Same attack as before. (Rage + Animal Focus + Enlarge Person + Lead Blades + Power Attack). Do we have Master T's Advice rolling? (if so, that's an additional +1 to attack and damage).

cold iron morningstar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Arien, MT, Rowane to act!

Arien pulls a vial from her bandolier and moves behind Huc, looking for an opening in the melee.

Question re Touch of Serenity. I looked through the Rules Questions forum for discussion on whether it was a mind-affecting effect, and found that unless this has been addressed in the errata 1) it isn't, but 2) it also isn't resolved as a touch attack (despite the name). Comments?
Master Temperance |
It has not been errata'd into a mind-affected effect. Presumably because you have to make the attack successfully and then there's a Will save? Yeah, multiple forum entries state (unofficially) that nothing is immune to it.
DM Carbide |
How about whether it's a touch attack or not?
Huc. |
Benefit: You must declare that you are using this feat before you make your attack roll (thus a failed attack roll ruins the attempt). On a successful hit, the attack deals no damage and bestows no other effect or condition, but the target cannot cast spells or attack (including attacks of opportunity and attacks as immediate actions) for 1 round unless it succeeds on a Will saving throw with a DC of 10 + 1/2 your character level + your Wisdom modifier. You may attempt a touch of serenity once per day for every four levels you have attained (but see Special), and no more than once per round.
While thematically, ti would make sense as a touch attack, I think the wording of the feat suggests a regular unarmed strike is necessary. :/
DM Carbide |
OK, then.

Master Temperance's hand snaps out, carrying with it a blessing of peace. However, the air around the demon seems to be curdled with a palpable foulness, and the gnome flinches reflexively at the unexpected sensation. That hesitation is enough for the schir to dodge the blow. It's running protection from good--hence its 21 AC vs. Huc and Master Temperance.
Rowane is up!
Schir: AC 19/21 T 12/14 FF 17/19 -22 HP

I did too, when it cast the spell. (The important thing, at the time, was that Fynn doesn't share Huc's alignment.)

The demon cackles. "Should have let me go peacefully, you fools." It lowers its head and strikes again, inflicting another terrible wound on Huc. Take 14 HP.

"Make room!" Arien calls out to the clustered fighters.
Master Temperance |
Temperance steps back and unleashes another impossible, brain-twisting koan.
Bluff: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
"That which can be named is not the immortal nameless," he begins.
Bewildering Koan, 5' Step. Beat that with Sense Motive or be dumbfounded, schir!

The demon's face contorts in anger as it's unwillingly drawn into consideration of the gnome's koan.

holy crap. Huc is almost out of this fight, gang. :/
HP 2/35
Gasping with pain and effort, the young woodsman holds onto consciousness as he roars out a command to his buddy. Fynn — finally freed from his orders to stay back — respond immediately, barking madly as he races around the pit to come at the demon from the back. Huc tries to time his attack with the mutt’s approach, but his wounds are deep. His swing still wild.
Free to command Fynn to flank. Then he’ll take the rest of his action after Fynn is in place (readying, if necessary, though that’s mostly semantics)
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
.
Fynn double moves into position.
.
Huc attacks again (mods: rage, Animal Focus (Strength), power attack, Outflank)
cold iron morningstar: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
damage: 3d6 + 13 ⇒ (3, 5, 4) + 13 = 25
EDIT: you gotta be kidding me. What are the chances that Koan also debuffed his AC by 2?
Rowane |
Huc you were the target of my shield other..we have been splitting the diference of damage dealt and you AC is increased by 1. Double checking the math, you have taken 30 hp worth of damage. I absorb half every time. Meaning I am at 7 and you are at 17.
Rowane answer the call as he channels life energy into the room, leaving out the demon.
channel: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8
Everyone can have 8 hp back..
After channel I have 15 hp and you are back up to 25

Since the demon is stuck contemplating again, I'll assume Arien continues to delay for an opening. Huc and Fynn, try to finish it this round.

Bolstered by the Abadaran’s support the hunting partners once again try to bring their quarry down.

cold iron morningstar: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

Fynn distracts the demon with a quick feint, and then Huc finishes it off. It vanishes in a foul-smelling cloud.
Out of combat!
DM Carbide |
The cloud is gone almost as soon as it appeared, leaving only an unpleasant stench. There is nothing else in the room.
Arien Keyne |
Arien peeks over the pit, shuddering at the wretched stench.
Look around the room, patch up anyone that needs it?
DM Carbide |
There is still nothing in the room.
DM Carbide |
The spiral staircase you took to get to the basement also goes up from the first floor.
DM Carbide |
As you ascend the stairs to the main level, you hear a sudden movement from the area of the kitchen, followed by a door closing and a thump.
Also, are you going to do anything with the trapped accuser devil?
Arien Keyne |
I don’t think we have anything that can really do much damage to it. We didn’t really come prepared to deal with DR or immunity.
DM Carbide |
Well, it did swear a binding oath to return to the Pit immediately and without attacking you, and it is LE.
DM Carbide |
Comments re the devil, and if not are you going to do anything about the noise?
Arien Keyne |
Arien doesn’t care one way or the other about letting the devil go back to its plane, it’s more about being prepared, if its lying. Aside from that, we have to head upstairs eventually, so swinging by the kitchen would obviously make sense, but I suggest we be sneaky about it. When everyone is ready…
Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Perception, Inspiration: 1d20 + 11 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 11 + (6) = 24 +5 vs. traps
DM Carbide |
Arien and Master Temperance slide silently into the kitchen. As the echoes of the thump die away, both can hear panting breathing from behind the door you couldn't get open before.
DM Carbide |
Apart from the breathing (which seems to be getting quieter and slower, as if whatever is behind the door is calming down), there are no other sounds.
Arien Keyne |
Arien whispers to her diminutive monk friend, ”Perhaps you could coax them out, Master Temperance?”
