Lidda notes nothing more out of the ordinary.
Svarog Sky-Tamer |
Heal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
So much for CSI: Trunau. :P Svarog wants to talk to the second in command before the smith.
DM Carbide |
Since you're working together, I'll let you use Aid Another to represent discussions among the five of you.
The Stone Fist |
Haftor mumbles a prayer under his breath (casts guidance) then examines the body. He looks for any evidence of foul play, like if Rodrick was beaten, choked, bound or drugged.
aid another heal 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Kira Ebonhawk |
Craft Alchemy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
That's pretty typical really.
Kira lets the rest of the small group take over after checking a few smaller things, "If our killer knew anything more about Rodrik... they might go after his friends and family. Maybe we should split up and check on Omast and Brinya? We can meet again at the Commons."
Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek nods. "I want to talk to the partner about this plot they might have stumbled on."
Ha. I hope investigation isn't a big focus of this mod. We are not good at this. :)
The Stone Fist |
"Hrmm." Haftor makes a doubtful noise on hearing they might split up, though he doesn't object. He will go with Jarrek, since he is uncomfortable with the idea of speaking with the girlfriend.
DM Carbide |
It's coming on for evening when you leave the Sanctuary. A light rain has begun to fall, and most of the people on the street are hurrying to get under cover before it gets worse. As you meditate on what you've learned, through your reverie comes a shout of alarm from your right, along with a low growl. A passer-by dives for cover on a porch as three wolves run out from between two houses. One is larger than the other two; all three, though, are slavering and foaming at the mouth.
I'll get a map up if need be after your initial actions.
Round 1:

Kira

Lidda

Haftor
Everyone but Haftor can act. The wolves are fifty feet away.

Haftor Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Svarog Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Wolf Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Lidda Tosscobble |
Lidda stands frozen in panic. Wolves? Here, in town? How did they get here? Where are the guards? What do I do? Her eyes are fixed on the nearest wolf, but she doesn't move.
Misfortune hex on the nearest wolf to Lidda, Will DC 14 to resist
Svarog Sky-Tamer |
Forever vigilant, Svarog's perpetual state of armed-ness proved its value once more. In the blink of an eye, he had unslung, nocked, and fired an arrow from his compound bow.
Comp. longbow vs. bigger wolf: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Jostled by the crowd, his arrow thunked into a wall behind the biggest wolf.

Fortunately, there aren't a lot of people around.

Lidda feels something odd twist inside of her as the wolves close. Svarog's arrow goes wide of the mark. Kira and Jarrek, you can act!
Big wolf: AC 14 T 12 FF 12
Small wolves: AC 15 T 15 FF 10
Kira Ebonhawk |
Kira's protective instincts kick in as she sees the snarling wolves spring out from the alleyway between the two houses, stepping in front of Lidda (though not blocking her eye sight). Pulling out a pair of palm sized orbs, she winds back her arm and throws the first.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
DC 15 Ref save for halving splash damage.
Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek bares his teeth back at the wolves as he draws the huge sword off his back and puts himself in between the biggest wolf and the rest of the group. "I don't know how you got in here, puppies, but I'm going to love having a wolf-fur mantle on my cloak. Get behind me, everyone!"
There's a wall around this town, right?
Move action to draw falchion, standard action to begin Inspire Courage +1 atk/dmg to all allies (7 rounds). It'll be nice once he can draw his weapon as part of a move action.
DM Carbide |
There is indeed a wall or stockade all around the town.

Kira's bomb explodes near the wolves as they lope forward, burning two of them. Jarrek strides forward to meet them, blade in hand. One of the two smaller wolves bites at the bard and hits him for 1 HP, plus give me a DC 10 Fort save. The larger wolf looks like it's about to tear into the bard, but gets tangled up on the approach and misses. The third wolf bites futilely at Svarog.
Haftor can act, and then the rest of the party! Combat map is linked at the top of the page.

Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek ignores the smaller wolf bite and swings at the big wolf. His oversized blade caught the light, gleaming brightly as he swept the falchion toward his target. "Take down the big one! That's the real threat!"
Free action to continue Inspire Courage +1/+1 (6 rounds), swift action to use Arcane Strike +1, attacks big wolf.
Just a note- he's not trying to order people around, I'm just fluffing his talking during a fight as his Inspire Courage. He's not a singer, he's a talker.
Falchion + Inspire Courage: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Well, that's disappointing.
Damage + IC + Arcane Strike: 2d4 + 5 ⇒ (1, 2) + 5 = 8
DM Carbide |
Lidda, the largest wolf was the one you tagged last round, and the hex only works once per target per day.
ETA: Haftor, did you also want to move closer now?
The Stone Fist |
I'm BAB 0 right now, so drawing my weapon is a move action, and my blessing is a standard action. I've got no actions left.
Svarog Sky-Tamer |
Unwilling to leave Jarrek to deal with the wolves alone, and hindered by shooting into melee anyway, Svarog re-slung his bow, drew his sword, and pressed forward.

Lidda again feels an odd twisting inside her as she glares at the closest wolf. Jarrek barks orders and tries to hit one of the wolves, but the beast is too quick for him. Svarog hits the larger of the trio.
Kira is up!
Red wolf (small): AC 15 T 15 FF 10 -3 HP unfortunate
Blue wolf (large): AC 14 T 12 FF 12 -9 HP
Green wolf (small): AC 15 T 15 FF 10 -0 HP

Kira reaches into her pack and pulls out a small bottle with her free hand. The bottle holds an orange liquid with small flecks of something in it before she pops the bottle and drinks it down like taking a shot. The magic of the drink flowing down her arm which holds the second bomb, changing its structure as she readies to throw it.
Drinking Targeted Bomb Admixture.
Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek's falchion gleams as he raises it to chop at the big wolf again. "Great hit, Svarog! We'll be wearing wolf skins in no time! These beasts are nothing to a pair of Kellid warriors!"
Maintaining Inspire Courage +1/+1 (5 rounds), using Arcane Strike again.

Fort DC10: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Svarog grunted in defiance as the wolf yanked his leg out from under him and savaged it. He knew standing would leave him vulnerable to another bite, but there was no way he was staying flat on his back with three wolves ready to attack.
With a roar in answer to Jarrek's words, he lurched back to his feet, slashing at the big wolf again in a two-handed grip. What Jarrek said was true - a wolf was no match for a Kellid, no matter its size!

The alchemist lobs the bomb she holds in a high arc, landing it directly on the remaining wolf. The wolf obligingly bursts into flames and perishes.
Out of combat!
Lidda Tosscobble |
Lidda looks over at Svarog's battered leg. "You're bleeding!" She rushes over to take a closer look, pulling away the ripped clothing. As her hand brushes against his skin, the bleeding stops and the wound visibly shrinks before her eyes. Surprised, she falls back on her rear, staring at the leg, uncomprehending.

Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek nods at Kira. "Not unless they were distracted or overcome. We should check on the gate. At the very least, if there's nothing going on there, we can let the militia know these dead animals are here and need to be taken care of."
He looks down at the big wolf then over at Svarog. "I was serious about taking the pelt, but you took it down. Do you want it?"
Not sure if it needs to be RPed out, but Jarrek will absolutely try to get a wolf pelt to add a mantle to his cloak and some claws and teeth to make a necklace out of.
Svarog Sky-Tamer |
Svarog settled more of his weight onto his leg experimentally, and eyed Lidda. "You're a surprising woman, Lidda." He gave her a hand up.
As though that were thanks enough, he turned to Jarrek and said, "You fought it as much as I. Take the pelt. I do not want another. In any case, you're right. The guards would never let in wolves. We should check on the gate*."
He stalked toward the gate*, only a slight limp showing that his leg was still injured. Sheathing his cleaned sword, he unlimbered his bow once more.
*The gate is the direction the wolves came from, right? If not, he says they should track them to their source instead, and goes to look in the direction they appeared from.
Lidda Tosscobble |
Linda's mouth hangs open as she watches him walk away. "I'm a surprised woman," she mutters under her breath before shaking her head and trotting after him.
-Posted with Wayfinder
DM Carbide |
There's a gate in the direction they seemed to come from, but the guards there saw nothing of any wolves. They'll take the bodies and dispose of them. Only one has a relatively intact pelt--one fell to Kira's bomb, and the other took some acid damage from Haftor's strike.
Svarog Sky-Tamer |
Svarog is more concerned with figuring out how the wolves got in than continuing the investigation for the moment - after all, the dead guy isn't going anywhere, and wolves are dangerous to the living.
He'll go looking for how they got in, and suggest to the guards that they send someone around to check the walls. What season is it again? Is there snow the wolves could have left tracks in or anything?
tracking: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
DM Carbide |
It's coming on for fall, so tracking won't be easy.
The guards are going to do their own quick investigation, as the presence of the wolves indicates a possible gap in the wall. Svarog tracks them as best he can, and finds something interesting--as far as he can tell, their tracks appear as if out of nowhere, two blocks or so west of where they attacked the party. There was apparently a cart there, but the ranger is unable to track it very far before its trail is hopelessly obscured by other vehicle and foot traffic on the road.
Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek grunts. "They came in on a cart? Well trained enough to lay in the back of a cart until told they could get up, then let loose on the town." He shakes his head. "I'll bet it's those half-orcs Cham said checked out this morning. We should ask the guards if they went through the gate or if they saw anybody leave with a cart."
DM Carbide |
Note that they were foaming and slavering as if rabid.
DM Carbide |
The bodies are still there, if you want to investigate them.
