Rah the Reincarnate |
Cleaning off lunch from her robes, Rah asks "Does anyone have a restore dignity spell?"
With few charges left in her staff, she retrieves her spellbook and flips through it for a moment as Bogen is healed.
1 arcane point to swap out fly for fireball. 4/6 arcane points left.
"Did someone say they saw something metal was in the pool? Let me scan the area again and then someone should try to recover it." Rah casts a spell to detect magic and looks around.
DM Carbide |
There's a magical aura across the pool. After a bit of work, you retrieve a mostly mineral-encrusted spear that was in the hands of a skeleton. The shaft just below the spearhead is forged in the form of seven columns twisted together (which may ring some bells with everyone except maybe Bogen), and Rah identifies it as a +1 aberration bane spear.
Bogenschützen is able to retrieve four arrows.
Maddie Sykes |
"It seems the Azlanti that formerly resided here were misguided to say the least. Rather than storing the spear, would you mind if I carried it? With the types of creatures residing down here, I believe it would be a better weapon to use than the ones I have." Maddie requests, after using Bogenschützen's wand to heal him.
.
Quiven Glist |
Cool spear, let her use it! Quiven looks around once more and says, Well, lets go!
DM Carbide |
You continue deeper into the strange labyrinth below the Natatorium, passing another collapsed side passage. Suddenly up ahead, at the edge of your light, you see (and hear) movement--it looks like another chuul, not concealed by illusion. It starts to retreat when it sees you.
Round 1:
Initiative order
Quiven-nauseated
Bogenschützen
Rah
Chuul
Maddie
Maddie Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Quiven Initiative: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Rah Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Chuul Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Bogenschützen |
- Free Action: "Another lobster thing? Take it down or let it go?"
- Delay for responses (or actions) from Quiven and Rah. Bogenschützen will follow their lead.
Would be happy to await Maddie, too, but she's last in initiative order. The chuul might get away if the party chooses to take it down.
Quiven Glist |
Quiven starts with the usual dry heaves. Maybe we should stop it... ugh, before it finds friends?
Bogenschützen |
- Coming out of delay:
- Free Action: "If that would be best..."
- Non Action: 5-foot-step
- Full attack:
Manyshot: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22, Cold Iron Arrow: 2d8 + 22 ⇒ (5, 1) + 22 = 28
Rapidshot: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20, Cold Iron Arrow: 1d8 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Iterative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24, Cold Iron Arrow: 1d8 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
Rah the Reincarnate |
If Bogen's arrows don't drop it, then Rah will cast an ear-piercing scream.
Ear-piercing Scream Fort DC 16 for 1/2 and negate daze: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 5) = 10
I'm not sure I can do this, but I'd like to use my metamagic extending rod to extend the daze 1 more round if possible.

Round 1 (final):

Quiven-nauseated
Bogenschützen-acted
Rah-acted
Chuul-dazed
Maddie
All three of Bogenschützen's attacks hit, since the creature was not yet ready to defend itself. It's still up, though. Rah's spell takes it unawares and sends its senses reeling.
Maddie is up, then everyone else! Rearranging the round:
Round 2:
Initiative order
Maddie-
Quiven-
Bogenschützen
Rah
Chuul
DC 16 Fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Maddie Sykes |
With the creature well down the hall and dazed temporarily, Maddie decides not to move into melee yet, opting instead to draw and use her wand of Bless on the party.
+1 to attacks and fear saves.
21 charges left on wand
Bogenschützen |
Sorry. I should have done 1HP of damage less per arrow last turn because I was not in point blank range. :-(
- Move Action: Move 30-feet and draw tanglefoot bag (Because we want it to stay put.)
- Standard Action: Toss!
Ranged Touch+BAB+DEX+Point Blank+Bless: 1d20 + 7 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 6 + 1 + 1 = 22
DM Carbide |
Rah--unfortunately, no. It's an instantaneous spell.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Quiven Glist |
Quiven moves forward, draws his bow, and fires!
Bow: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20 for Arrow: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Sneak, if he is FF: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 1) = 14
DM Carbide |
The chuul was dazed before it could take its first action, so I'll give you the sneak attack damage.

DM Carbide |
After spell and arrows, the chuul is clinging to life by a thread. On top of that it's unable to avoid being stuck to the floor. Rah, do you want to reconsider your action, knowing that it's stuck for the moment?
DC 17 STR check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Chuul: -81 HP
DM Carbide |
Don't forget the bless spell, Rah.
-Posted with Wayfinder
DM Carbide |
The acid left it with one HP; save the arrow and throw a rock at it instead. Incidentally, I was out of town over the weekend and had far less time to post than I originally anticipated.
The chuul falls. In the ensuing silence, Quiven thinks he might hear something moving up past the chuul's body, but is not entirely sure.
Maddie Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
Quiven Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
Rah Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Other check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Maddie Sykes |
"Perhaps we should keep moving while we are still under Pharasma's blessing." Maddie suggests as she moves forward, although stopping if one of her allies warns her of danger.
DM Carbide |
Mark two rounds off of the bless spell duration, to account for time spent recouping and preparing to advance.
With Quiven's warning, no one is particularly surprised when a second chuul charges out to attack the party (or, more accurately, begins to charge).
Round 1:
Initiative order
Quiven
Maddie
Chuul
Bogenschützen
Rah
Maddie Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Quiven Initiative: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
Rah Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Chuul Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Maddie Sykes |
Maddie braces the aberration bane spear in anticipation of the chuul's charge.
Readying an action with the spear braced against the chuul.
Readied action: Aberration bane spear + brace + bless: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 2 + 1 = 20
Damage: 2d8 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 4 + (1, 1) = 14
Quiven Glist |
Oh that is true. Well, we'll try to move across the way then and draw him out.

Rah
Struggling to contain his nausea, Quiven dashes across the tunnel opening. The chuul charges at Maddie! One massive claw lashes out...and hits the wall next to the cleric, sending chips of organic material flying. The charge left the creature open to attack, though, and Maddie's newly acquired spear seems to vibrate in her hands as it cleaves into the chuul.
Bogenschützen and Rah are up!
Bogenschützen |
- Non Action: 5-foot-step
- Full Round Attack:
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29, Blunt Arrows: 2d8 + 22 ⇒ (2, 6) + 22 = 30
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15, Miss!
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13, Miss!
- Free Action: Seeing his last two arrows bounce harmlessly off of the chuul's body, Bogenschützen jumps to the conclusion: "This one's tough. Must be a champion."
Rah the Reincarnate |
Rah dashes forward and tries to distract the chuul with a thrust of her staff, but her skills are sadly lacking in melee combat.
Aid Another for Maddie's next attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Still, this puts Rah in position for Quiven to step over and get some flanking sneak attacks! :)

Chuul
Bogenschützen puts a pair of arrows into the chuul (yes, I know they're blunt, but he's just that good), and Rah rushes into combat.
Quiven and Maddie are up!
Chuul: -44 HP
Maddie Sykes |
Maddie wields the spear once again against the Chuul, letting it fulfill its magical purpose.
Aberration bane spear + Bless: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 2 + 1 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 2 + (3, 5) = 13
Quiven Glist |
Quiven shifts to flank (!) the creature!
Attack: 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 13 + 1 = 23 for Damage: 1d4 + 2 + 4d6 ⇒ (2) + 2 + (6, 6, 4, 3) = 23
Attack: 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 13 + 1 = 26 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 + 4d6 ⇒ (2) + 1 + (5, 6, 6, 6) = 26
DM Carbide |
Maddie's spear and Quiven's blades strike home, and the chuul falls.
Out of combat!
Rah, according to her standard operating procedure, examines the area using detect magic and notes an aura inside the chamber at the end of the side branch hallway. The domed chamber smells horrible, a stench which likely emanates from the pool of polluted water flooding the eastern end of the room. The aura, of course, is in the water. After a bit of poking around (a process facilitated when Bogenschützen cuts a claw off of one of the chuuls and uses the limb as a rake), you manage to get a glowing gem out of the muck on the bottom of the pool. Rah identifies it as a fire elemental gem.
Maddie Sykes |
With a brief break from combat, Maddie fishes out her Pearl of Power and offers it to Rah, "Please use this to help recover some of your magic."
It's only level 1, but it's better than nothing.
Quiven Glist |
Cool gem. Let's get going. I really wanna get out of here. I hate being sick all the time.
Rah the Reincarnate |
"Now this will be useful." Rah smiles upon identifying the elemental gem.
At Maddie's offer, she gives a grateful nod. "Thank you, dear, but I am not sure that pearl will help me."
I don't think an archanist use a pearl of power. I think they have to use the sorcerer or bard equivalent.
DM Carbide |
You form up and move forward slowly, pausing every now and then for Rah to sense for magic ahead of you. Your caution pays off--the arcanist senses an aura, which she readily identifies as an alarm spell nexus just before the next side branch.
Maddie Sykes |
Ah, that's right. Sorry, fresh out of runestones of power.
"That is unfortunate, perhaps the gem will be of some aid then, yes." Maddie says as she puts the pearl away, "Let's move forward then."
