Still stunned, you see a vision of a 20-year-old Hulrun leading the burning of dozens of supposed “witches” in the courtyard of the Kite before the wardstone. You understand that this event launched the Third Crusade.

Still stunned, you see a vision of Khorramzadeh the Storm King leading a brazen attack on Kenabres.
The Storm King manages to strike a resounding blow with his sword against the wardstone, which suffers only the tiniest of cracks as the balor’s sword shatters.
Khorramzadeh is then attacked and forced to flee when the silver dragon Terendelev nearly kills him.

JUMP CUT: A vision.

You see a vision of Irabeth chasing a burly dwarven man—Staunton Vhane
(leader of the Hammers of Heaven mercenary group) into the courtyard containing the wardstone. Both paladins are heavily wounded, and as Staunton backs against the wardstone, smoke rises as his back blisters and chars, and he screams in pain. He ducks to avoid one of Irabeth’s blows, then manages to smash her knee with his hammer, dropping her to the ground.
Staunton seems ready to deliver a death blow, but the sound of approaching soldiers forces him instead to back away and summon a fiendish giant wasp that he swiftly mounts and then flies away to the north, abandoning Kenabres.

You see a vision of Minagho, a beautiful demonic woman with a long thin tail, clawed hands, and curling horns protruding from where her eyes should be, placing the wardstone fragment in this room and of Jeslyn using an unholy conjuration granted by Minagho to create the cage around it before Minagho teleports away.

You see a vision of an event you know will now never happen—Areelu Vorlesh using a deep purple Nahyndrian crystal the size of a human’s head to corrupt the fragment, causing the entire border to flash with nauseating mauve fire that devastates the border cities and transforms countless crusaders into half-fiend slaves of the Worldwound.
You realize at this point that the demons’ entire plan was to draw as many crusaders to the border to defend it from their attacks, in order to maximize the damage this event would have caused.

Areelu, blazing with rage as she sees what happened to the demonic forces along the borderlands through a device called an imago lens, turns the device around and glares in your direction.

You see Areelu's projection from the Abyss via the imago lens appears as a somewhat transparent beautiful demonic woman with batlike wings, a horned brow, and glowing red eyes. She regards the still-stunned heroes scattered about the chamber (still glowing!) with a smoldering, furious expression.
You realize, it's not a Vision!
She says, “This only delays your kind’s extinction. But at least I can take steps to hasten your own.”
She makes a gesture, and a blaze of purple radiant sparks flow from her image into the room, flowing to, around and over you.

But...

The purple sparks seem to evaporate to no effect.
The witch seems frustrated when her mass suffocation spell fails to affect you.
She says, “The death throes of your wardstone seem to be protecting you from my magic. No matter. They cannot protect you from my slaves!”

With this, Areelu spreads wide her arms and a rift tears open in reality!
A flood of babaus tumble through into the room, and beyond them the PCs catch glimpses of even greater demons preparing to enter—vrocks, glabrezus, even a marilith—when suddenly the energy infusing them pulses back outward.
You are no longer stunned.
As this happens, a powerful energy hits the Abyssal rift and slams it shut—Areelu screams in pain as the magical feedback tears into her body, breaking bones and shredding her wings.
An instant later, her projected image vanishes—her connection to the Material Plane has been severed and she has been critically (but not mortally) wounded, but the babaus that managed to clamber into the Material Plane before the rift closed remain and immediately attack!


For this battle, the heroes remain bolstered by the supercharged energy surging through their bodies. Each hero gains the following temporary template during the battle.
• Damage reduction 10/good
• Regeneration 5 (unholy damage or evil spells)
• Resist acid 10 and fire 10
• Each hero glows with bright light that automatically dispels any 3rd-level or lower darkness effect they enter.
• Each heroes attacks are treated as good for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction, and deals +2d6 points of damage against creatures with the evil subtype.
• Once per round as an immediate action, a hero can roll 1d12 and add the result to any d20 roll he just made.

He felt something pull him from the creature and bright lights disapeared into darkness for what seemed an eternity... and then the sweet taste of copper flooded his senses as he took a breath. His eyes, already shut clenched tighter as for a momentary second pain flooded every ounce of his being...his eyes shot open and he sat up as images flooded into his mind leading to the final ones.

"Run you pathetic wretch! Run into the deepest darkest pit you can find on whatever plane you can find but even that wont save you!

He growled as he rose to his feet in a righteous fury. HE gripped his holy symbol, Verbalized the components to a spell and touched Caralain, The holy energy enhancing his strength like an angry bull ready to charge.

Casting Bulls' Strength on Caralain since he was closest. +4 to your strength score for the next 3 minutes.

Thetin feels the divine energy surging through him, like the first feeling of Torag's divine protection but a thousand fold. As the divine energy continues to swell, he feels a bond with Radiance snap into place. He feels strength flood back through his body but is still only able to watch as the visions flash before his eyes.

The tortuous vision of crusaders being turned into half fiendish slaves fades, however the image of the demonic witch remains. Seeing the real image of the one who would have put his brothers and sisters in arms through such pain fills Thetin with a cold fury, but is unable to move as she opens the rift to the abyss. His fury is quickly replaced with smug satisfaction as the energy surrounding him surges, tearing apart the rift and into the body of the demonic witch. He smiles as the image disappears and turns his attention to the horde of demons that made it through the rift.

Those things, profound as they are, pale beside his elation at seeing Kelden restored. Gladness sings through his veins like the birds of spring. Or perhaps it is just the cleric's spell bolstering him with divine strength. No, Carilain is damn glad to see Kelden, that is certain.

The extreme danger remains, however. Carilain focuses on what to do in the moment.

He casts his web spell again, not in the hopes of gobbing up a bunch of demons, but rather to limit their options.

Kankai fully expected the bright light and shards to shred her feathers and her. Upon looking down though, she saw a different thing. Her feathers, once stained with the ichor of the creatures here, were white once again and glowing.

Then the visions started. Time played in her mind. When the visions ended and she saw the creature...that vile female she was glad she couldn't move otherwise she would be launching herself into a fight she judged at this point she couldn't win. When the woman screamed in pain her emotionless face still smiled.

Kicking herself up as she collapsed she picked up her sword entering a new Tiger Stance.

Yes, that was very epic, Camris!

Kyra's smiles and closes her eyes as the Wardstone shatters into an explosion of golden light and a myriad of razor sharp fragments. She prepares to look upon the River of Souls, but suddenly realizes there is no sudden rush of pain and she opens her eyes just in time to see the priestess turned into a red mist... She gasps in ecstasy as the holy floods through her body and soul, the burning righteous fury of her goddess...

The flooding of images is almost too much for her to follow until suddenly there she is, staring at the demoness. She has no words for the threats leveled her way; she completed her mission and saved those countless lives. If this was to be her final act, then by the goddess was it an epic one. The dervish that sacrificed her own life all those years ago in that foul basement would be proud to be apart of this moment...

And then she was there with a room full of demons and a holy fury empowering her. She gets to her feet, her eyes glowing a vibrant green and streaming tears of gold. "The darkness cannot stand before the light of the Dawnflower." She hears the shout of a voice that she knows is gone, but perhaps his spirit was still there with them, guiding them in this battle. 'Brother Kelden...'

She quickly casts a spell she suddenly seems to know, perhaps the power of the Wardstone imprinted it upon her mind. Or perhaps this was the Dawnflower at work? Whatever it was... she felt like a true hero now. A hero of Kenabres, she was no longer afraid.

Stand from Prone and cast Heroism.

Radiance’s head blazed like a miniature sun, banishing the darkness the Babau demons brought with them as Thetin leapt forward and crushed one side of Red A’s head. It flew back into one of it’s fellows; but it struggled to its feet again, still alive! The acidic slime picked up off the Babau rolled off Radiance like rainwater, dropping to the flagstone floor with a hiss.

Carilain Riveroak_______

The web instantly threaded its way among the enemy, but many of the Babau demons never even felt it’s touch; the threads affecting them winking out due to their Magical Resistances. Those that the web threads did not simply wink out merely blackened and dissolved away at the touch of the acidic slime covering the demons skin.

The emaciated figures of the Babau demons look like horned human skeletons smothered within a bone-tight hide of slimy leather. Their hideous red eyes gaze hungrily at you as they wince at the light shining from your eyes and weapons.
Howling to intimidate, they simultaneously cast Darkness multiple ways and areas, dimming the light you can see by, then charge forth; an unstoppable horde!

TACTICAL OVERVIEW

Bear in mind, only if you attack with nonmagical weapons do they have a realistic chance to be damaged by the acidic slime covering the Babau.
Also, though Darkness fills the chamber, wherever you glance with your searchlight eyes is clear of it, the ten feet around Radiance is clear of it, and the five feet around Carilain is filled with a wierd purple radiance coming off of his black blade instead.

Don't forget folks, we have DR 10/Good and Resist Acid 10. That means the acid damage cannot overcome our energy resistance at all. And hopefully your DR will absorb most of the damage. Whatever does get through will like be removed via Regen 5!! Also, I do not believe any of our weapons will end up taking damage from the acid as I believe they are all metal one-handed weapons w/ a Hardness of 10.

The emaciated figures of the Babau demons look like horned human skeletons smothered within a bone-tight hide of slimy leather. Their hideous red eyes gaze hungrily at you as they wince at the light shining from your eyes and weapons.
Howling to intimidate, they simultaneously cast Darkness multiple ways and areas, dimming the light you can see by, then charge forth; an unstoppable horde!

Kyra Greenstar______
Kyra slips into her Battledance and immediately counterattacks the babau that managed to minimally injure her. She then dances away from the demons, directly behind Kankai and prepares to fight back to back with the swordmaster.
Kyra became a miniature tornado of hair, limbs and steel, which licked out and tore a deep gash across the muzzle of Red 8 before spinning behind Kankai.

Carilain Riveroak______
Using his spellstrike ability, Carilain summons his invisible shield into existence. Then he darts forward, unleashing some of Grimstar's power into the blade. "Do you hunger?" He silently asks his weapon.
A loud keening fills the air as a peculiar violet radiance surrounds Grimstar and trails behind it as it slashes through the air. Fell runes can be seen now tracing down the black blade. It is a peculiar thing to compare; the Babau react with fear and hatred to Radiance, but Grimstar they just… feared.
Together, Carilain and Grimstar attack.
Grimstar seemed to move by itself as Carilain stepped forward and cut across the palms of Red 1.
Even as he fights, the magus tries to recall what, if anything, he knows about these enemies.

Carilain:
The babau is an assassin, a murderer, and a sadist—certainly not traits unusual in the demons, yet the babau's penchant for stealth and surprise sets it apart from its generally less-subtle kin.
They love to ambush, usually under cover of darkness where they can sneak attack without fear of retaliation.
They are very tough, requiring cold iron or good aligned weapons to affect reliably. They are moderately resistant to cast spells, and moderately resistant to most elements (except sonic), and totally immune to electricity and poison.
They can see through most darkness and invisibility, can dispel magic and teleport at will.
In particular, they have a layer of acidic slime that coats a babau's skin. Anybody and anything that attacks a Babau and makes contact takes acid damage, and sometimes they like to grapple and let the acid slowly burn a creature to death while they watch and laugh.
A babau typically carries a longspear or other weapon with which it can strike at foes beyond its normal reach, but given the opportunity, a babau prefers to fight with its teeth or claws.

Thetin Dorvas_______

They seem to take offense at what Thetin shouted and redouble their attempts to seek the life and soul of Radiance’s bearer.
Thetin then takes a 5ft step back and swings at R5 to try and pull its attention off Kankai.
Blazing Radiance connected with Red 5’s arm and he reeled back, smoking.

It is difficult to strike at Red 1 from his position around the open doorway, but he managed to thrust around Carilain to clip the demon for some damage.

For this battle, the heroes remain bolstered by the supercharged energy surging through their bodies. Each hero gains the following temporary template during the battle.
