Sorry, I swear I reread that post a half dozen times, must have been in my literacy blind spot or something.
Carefully, Max creeps down the eastern corridor, crossbow cocked and eyes peeled for danger, despite his claims to courage, he will beat a hasty retreat at the first sign of enemies.

A table displaying a three-dimensional diorama occupies much of the north side of this room. Three shields with different designs are displayed upon a rack against the east wall, while various weapons hang from another rack along the south wall.
Arrayed around the room are five small chests and a clay urn.
As Max steps into the chamber he spots movement from the diorama and sees to his amazement that three tiny Osirion soldiers are clambering down from the display. They bear spears and shields commensutate with their size but wear only loin cloths.
The Halfling beats a hasty retreat.

Ra-Khefer stands forth with shield at the ready, in between the possible threat and his companions.
He looks uncertainly at the tiny soldiers and clears his throat.
"Ah, we have permission."
He looks over his shoulder.
"Show them, milord."

Maxelmish Stoutwick |

"I don't think they're listening, Ra." Once safely behind the heavy hitters, Max cocks his crossbow and takes aim at one of the toy soldiers.

Ra-Khefer's face hardens. He knows what duty is; having been one of them once.
"Pharasma forgive what must be done." He whispers a prayer.
He stands his ground and attacks when they come close enough to threaten.

Miss Lori |

snap, missed combat? maybe? if not here's my attack Since this is my round one attack i'm gonna assume Ra's not by the third guy so i don't get the -4 to attack.
Seeing the toy soldiers still advancing towards them, Lori aims her pistol and fires at the closest one.

With the threat averted, Max re-enters the room and inspects the urn and chests for further traps. He offhandedly gestures to the weapon rack "Any of those magical?" he asks.

DM Wellard |

You can see that the chests are sealed with Wax.
A Detect Magic reveals that none of the weapons are Magical though a closer inspection shows that both Spear and Khopesh are very finely constructed(Masterwork) The Bow needs a new string(and has a +2 Str adjustment)
In 3.5 Str adjustment was optional and that made the weapon Masterwork...I see no reason not to continue that here..so the Bow counts as MW also

Since we are not in any rush here, might I suggest that Max take 20's on his perception checks?
The big man audibly sighs in relief as the last of the little wooden men is destroyed. He patiently waits for Max to finish his explorations while commenting, "I am able to fight with most weapons effectively but I don't recognize that one. (he points to the khopesh) The spear and the bow I can make use of unless someone else has use for them. Though I prefer my chakrams to a bow...but at long distances I suppose it would help."

![]() |

"That is a khopesh;" Ra-Khefer said, nodding to the weapon. "It is an old fashioned weapon nowadays, used in ancient Osirion. Not an easy thing to learn to wield, but you could do some fancy things with it."
He frowned thoughtfully in remembrance as he reached out and touched the khopesh.
"We used a ceremonial version as part of our duties in the Unbreakables." He continued softly.

Sorry my bad...the Scarab Shield detects as Magical
None of the chests are trapped.. a few minutes work with daggers manages to cut through the wax and reveal the following.
A sack with a 100 gp and 42 sp
several scroll tubes holding papyrus records, private memos, expense ledgers, speeches, and private correspondence. Among the papers are discussions regarding the unfinished tomb of Akhentepi’s mistress.
There is little else of interest in the papers, but to a collector or Osirionologist, these documents are worth 250 gp total if undamaged.
The clay urn is also sealed with wax and contains nard, an expensive, oily perfume, worth 75 gp.
As for the Shield....
Scarab Shield
This +1 light steel shield is fashioned in the shape of a scarab beetle—a creature that functions as a psychopomp for Pharasma, guiding the souls of the departed into the afterlife. Scarab shields are especially favored by archaeologists and tomb raiders for the protection they grant against guardians and vermin frequently found in ancient ruins and forgotten tombs.
Once per day on command, a scarab shield grants its wielder a +2 sacred bonus on saving throws against fear and death effects for 3 minutes. At any time while this bonus is in effect, the wielder can end the effect as a swift action for a burst of healing energy. The wielder loses the saving throw bonus, but is healed of 1d8+3 points of damage.
In addition, a scarab shield can protect its wielder from swarms. If a mindless swarm attempts to enter the wielder’s space, the swarm must attempt a DC 11 Will save. If the save succeeds, the swarm can enter the wielder’s space and attack the wielder normally. If the save fails, the swarm instinctively avoids the space occupied by the wielder, completely ignoring the wielder for 3 rounds. This effect ends if the wielder makes any attacks, but the wielder may use non-attack spells or otherwise act without ending the effect. This ability functions once per day

Wow, nice shield! What do you say Ra? We both use heavy shields, and this one is light, but it has a nice death motif that may interest you.
The big man looks skeptically at the shield, "I'm not sure it's big enough for me..."

Maxelmish Stoutwick |

After catalogging and disbursing their loot, Max heads back down South and West, towards the beetle alcove. "Let's go for broke, as the carnival man says 'What's behind door number three?'"[/b]
He checks the final door for traps, then steps back. "Best not to press my luck. Ra, if you would be so kind?"
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Ra-khefer or Cerastes should definately use the shield.

Inferis 'al Marris |

Inferis informs her companions about the shield's properties. "I believe that Ra or Cerastes would be best served by using this shield. We should take the remainder of the information and sell it."
DM: the information about an uncompleted tomb for the mistress. Do we have a location for it?

Ra-Khefer was going to pass over the light shield, but hesitates at the realization that the shield was blessed of Pharasma. He bows his head and accepts it.
He wondered what to do about the shield he already carried, considering that it had been buried with him, but he decided that could wait until they were out of here. Until then he could bear the weight of both.

the second doors are untrapped mundane and unlocked. You find yourself looking into a large chamber...
The center of this large octagonal room is a raised square platform a few inches above the floor, with a stone pillar at each corner. A gold-trimmed sarcophagus sits in the center of the platform, flanked by two statues of humanoid beings with canine heads, each of which holds an ankh in one of its crossed arms. Stone double doors exit the room to the north and south.

Ra nods.
"Yes milord." He agreed and paced forward with Cerastes.
He keeps a wary eye out; tombs were famous for having traps and guardians.
He should know, having been one.
