Weeks have passed since Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith departed for the Bandu Hills, and having not heard from him since but learned of an Aspis Consortium expedition bound for the same destination, the Society and local allies have grown worried for the aging explorer’s safety. As the PCs travel south on Sharrowsmith’s trail, they must track the venture-captain to the ruins he sought while also dealing with the aftermath of his actions.

A powerful guardian stands vigil over the ancient ruins where Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith disappeared recently, yet the beast has a weakness: a prophesied talisman now in the possession of an elusive grippli tribe deep in the Kaava Lands. The PCs must win the reclusive people’s trust and claim the prize—all before the Aspis Consortium does!

Having bested the Aspis Consortium and recovered a powerful weapon, the PCs return to the Bandu Hills to delve into its ruins, confront the ancient guardian within, and find their missing venture-captain. Even greater secrets lie below, and the Pathfinders soon find that there is more to the so-called Golden Guardian than legends suggest. Are you resourceful enough to survive the mounting danger and find Nieford Sharrowsmith?

Roderick suddenly identifies two different groups of well hidden threats hidden amongst the otherwise normal plants.

One is a "Living Topiary", a lumbering topiary has the rough shape of an elephant, complete with brambly limbs and tusks, a semi-intelligent Plant Type creature that can heal itself by consuming and incorporating nearby plant matter it touches. It's tough and resistant to Slashing Weapons, but very susceptible to Fire.

The other, or rather the other Four, are called Xtabay, or "Heart-Eater Blossoms". This patch of vines is ornamented with beautiful crimson and violet flowers, the petals of which seem to bear tiny faces. These small plants can only slowly crawl along the ground, normally preferring to trick victims into coming to them before devouring them. Their flowers hold spores that cause victims to fall asleep. Finally, they have a pair of stings that also aid in both knocking out victims and beginning to digest them. They are themselves Immune to Acid, but otherwise have no particular strengths or weaknesses of note.

Both are Plants, so have all the normal Plant Type Traits as well.

You also notice that each of the Heart-Eater Blossoms has dispatched some sort of soft, nearly invisible pollen into the air around it, (which is the purple ring on the map), and seems to be quietly aware of your presence.

INIT ROLLS:

---------------------------------------------------
Xtabay: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Living Topiary: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

New Map is up. Also, due to the thick growth, each square counts as difficult terrain, costing 10ft per square of movement, and making both Charging and 5ft Steps impossible. Well, except for these plants seem to be able to move through it with ease.

The larger elephant-looking plant stays still, still attempting to hide it's presence and draw you in closer after some of the scattered loot and coins within the area.

However, that does seem to stop the strange hanging pollen still hanging in the air. Nicolae, seeing how easy it seems to be, launches a bullet at another, but a crosswind catches the projectile not soon after it leaves his sling, and veers wide. Kyle instead decided to employ magic, sending a small ray of frozen power at the next closest Heart-Eater. It strikes true, seeping instantly into the creature's roots, and killing it, while Garret calls on divine aid for the group.

Yes, you can step back off the map, but, unless you have a way to ignore Difficult Terrain (directed at everyone), you can not 5ft Step. That is, you can move 5ft, but it actually takes a Move Action to accomplish and does draw AoO's. Alternatively, you can attempt an Accrobatics check to avoid the AoO, but it still takes a move action.

As for the HP, yes, last round I mistakenly put Caith's 9 damage on Roderick, but I fixed it with the last Init Update, so it is correct now. Sorry for the confusion.

Roderick moves up and dispatches the failing plant, practically leaping onto the living topiary to see just whose thorns are the more severe. In the end, he wins and the lifeless topiary falls to the ground lifelessly, still smoldering a bit.

Combat over. Please indicate any healing you need to do sort of in the background as I move on to keep things flowing. Roderick, you can save that last bomb.

Doesn't take long to put down the last plant from a distance, creating a path through the thick fauna to a bridge just at the edge of your vision. Searching around first reveals that the minor is still alive, but has been heavily drugged and is only barely clinging to life.

Around the area you manage to collect not a few coins, but also some still servicable adventuring equipment. Notable is a magic suit of Studded Leather Armor with stylized motifs of darkness and shadows, a Masterwork Scimitar, and two potions of Cure Light Wounds. In addition, several of the plants growing here are key components in expensive medicines, something you can use to add a bit more coin in your own pockets.

If you save the young woman, the miner indicates that the kobolds only recently came through with a dozen of her fellow laborers. She doesn’t know what the kobolds want with them, only that her captors were endeavoring to keep as many alive as possible. Even if healed completely, the miner refuses to brave the journey back to the Bandu Hills alone, yet she’s unwilling to venture on to fight the kobolds. She slowly walks to the top of the valley ridge, where she says she’ll await your return.

Walking to the bridge, you can see it spans a deep ravine, at least 300, if not 400 ft, (100+ Meters), deep. The bridge is ancient and crumbling, a span of stone reinforced by haphazard wooden reinforcements. A pair of ancient dwarven statues flanks either side of the bridge, each in considerable disrepair. An ancient stone building partly consumed by the jungle is visible across the ravine.

Please give me a 4 separate Perception checks and 2 Will Saves for alter. Appropriate modifiers will be added later when it actually comes up. Also, working on the new map. OOC, one of the issues I had with this scenario is that it really feels like it jumps from one combat encounter to the next here towards the end.

As you approach the bridge, you easily spot that it is heavily trapped, alerting you to the possibility of danger or an ambush. It isn't difficult to spot not one, but two hidden bestial shapes on the other side, but you easily dispatch them with ranged attacks before they can even become a theat.

From there, you easily avoid the traps on the bridge itself, and see that the two bestial shapes where Krenshars. Their corpses look similar to a panther with the exception of their faces, where the skin is pulled back slightly, allowing them to reveal their skulls in a frightening display. On the far side, you also discover a corpse on one of their past victims partially eaten. In addition to a little bit of coin, you discover a +1 Longspear and also a magical Light Hammer, (that functions identical to a Javelin of Lightening). However, the corpse, while partially eaten is still fairly identifiable, and does not appear to be a miner, and is clearly not the Venture-Captain you seek.

When the dwarves of Jormundun settled this valley, they dug deep below the Bandu Hills and discovered a fortune in gold. To commemorate the find and honor their patron, the dwarves constructed a temple to Torag at the first entrance to the city below. The structure now lies in ruin, a crumbling series of ancient stone walls, shattered monuments, and weathered statues overgrown with massive jungle trees.

The kobolds have claimed this place entirely and defaced many of the dwarven monuments and statues, decorating them with bone and feather fetishes or covering faded frescos with rudimentary kobold pictographs. Much of this kobold art depicts a ferocious golden dragon with wings outspread, an idealized depiction of the Golden Guardian.

What remains of the ruins’s heart may have once been a shrine. Demolished walls encircle an ancient dais, atop which a shattered anvil-shaped altar lies defaced with dried blood, chalk markings, and other detritus. The bones of dozens of humanoid creatures are scattered about the building, along with the larger skeletal remains of what may be wyverns or drakes that are marred with deep claw marks. Behind the altar, a large stairwell stained with the blood of countless creatures descends into some dark vault below.

Perception DC 15:
You notice that most of the skeletal remains littering the ruin were slain by a creature with powerful claws, for marks from its savage attacks are etched deep into the bones.

Heal DC 20:
You can date a set of wyvern bones as being centuries old, whereas the humanoid skeletons are much more recent.

As you sneak closer to the building, suddenly you stop, spotting a large Kobold warparty off the right, and jump behind some cover. They pass without spotting you and raising the alarm, but within the temple you can hear what seems to be some sort of singing in the language of dragons. Inching closer to the ruined structure, you catch glimpses of the miners, bound up. It looks like the Kobolds, four from what you can easily spot, are painting something red and white on them. Miners are the 7 smiley's on the map.

Know Religion DC 12:
It appears to be a single yellow wing on their foreheads, and the combination of the ritual, the red, white, and yellow paint, and the "golden" wing are not part of an religion you are aware of.

Sense Motive DC 15:
The prisoners seem to be in a deep depression, knowing that a painful death awaits them, and likely soon. However, if you could break them from their despair, it's possible they might aid you.

Assuming you are hiding off in the bushes say 100ft away at this moment, what do you want to do? Rush in, sneak up, something different?

Garret whispers to his companions; There must be a clawed creature near, the wounds of most of the dead are made by powerful claws. Also they are performing some kind of ritual, but of no religion knowed.

We should free the prisioners and encurage them to fight for their lives. Now they´ve abandoned themselves to their fate, but if we are able to ignite their souls again, they will fight at our side, I´m sure. Garret wait a few moments hoping everyone agree to free hose poor miners.

I think some of us should be a distraction, coming from the east and attracting the kobolds to figh, and the stealthiest of you could go from the west and free the prisioners.

I can´t move silently with this armor, but I can hold some of them in a fight

I made a small mistake, it's only 3 Kobolds, not 4.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

INIT ROLLS:

Caith: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20

Nicolae: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Roderick: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Kobold Sniper: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Kobold Sniper: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Kylar manages to quickly and quietly rush around to the far side, while everyone else gets into position and Roderick covers him. However, as Kylar sets and covers, about half way across Roderick snaps a twig, alerting the Kobolds to your presence.

One of the Kobolds is wearing light armor, and has a small, but rather well made rapier at his side. You can tell from his movements that he seems to have more than just rudimentary training with arms and armor. The other two are unarmored. Unlike your typical Kobolds who fight with cheap spears, if not rocks, these two are armed with shorts swords and light crossbows.

All but Roderick get a Surprise Round.

Something I wanted to point out, and I apologize for the delay, the captive miners do count as targets. If you throw, for instance, a fireball, they will take damage, and seeing how beat up and weak they appear, are almost assured to die. Heck, it looks like it wouldn't take much at all. They also do count as soft cover, and block charges, etc. . . However, with a good, inspiring speech and a High Diplomacy check as a Standard Action, they might be convinced to join the fight.
