Weeks have passed since Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith departed for the Bandu Hills, and having not heard from him since but learned of an Aspis Consortium expedition bound for the same destination, the Society and local allies have grown worried for the aging explorer’s safety. As the PCs travel south on Sharrowsmith’s trail, they must track the venture-captain to the ruins he sought while also dealing with the aftermath of his actions.

A powerful guardian stands vigil over the ancient ruins where Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith disappeared recently, yet the beast has a weakness: a prophesied talisman now in the possession of an elusive grippli tribe deep in the Kaava Lands. The PCs must win the reclusive people’s trust and claim the prize—all before the Aspis Consortium does!

Having bested the Aspis Consortium and recovered a powerful weapon, the PCs return to the Bandu Hills to delve into its ruins, confront the ancient guardian within, and find their missing venture-captain. Even greater secrets lie below, and the Pathfinders soon find that there is more to the so-called Golden Guardian than legends suggest. Are you resourceful enough to survive the mounting danger and find Nieford Sharrowsmith?

The Golden Guardian nods approvingly. “You truly are the worthy bearers of the talisman, so I shall tell you a story that Sigrin of Ashkurhall, the founder of this place, once told me. Long ago, when Sigrin’s father ruled as king, the dwarves rose from the depths and built a citadel so mighty that even a titan would gaze upon it in awe. Centuries later, a shower of stars rained upon a land not far from the dwarven hold. The dwarves marched to investigate. They found many wonderful things, the greatest of which was the mysterious artifact they named the Sky Key."

The Kobolds also seem to ease up a bit more, seeing that you have, somehow, earned the respect of their "god".

“But dark times soon followed, for their cousins from the underworld fell upon the dwarven citadel. Caught unprepared, the dwarves knew they could not hold off against the siege. The king ordered all but his most trusted guards to leave, and stayed behind to buy his people timed to escape. Before Sigrin and her three siblings left to lead the dwarves to safety, the king gave each of them a piece of the Sky Key, and kept one for himself. The dwarves traveled far and wide, but the dangerous journey across the unknown land caused rifts in their clan. One by one, the king’s children went their separate ways, each taking a piece of the key and a part of the clan. Sigrin’s dwarves made their way to this continent, and though they found it quite inhospitable, they pressed on. After much searching, they found gold and started building this place. Their prosperity grew with each passing decade.”

Grinning, the Guardian continues, “That’s when I entered the picture. We didn’t get along at first, but I came to realize they were decent people, who appreciated stone and gold as much as I did. Their luck did not last, however. A sickness came over the dwarves, and the survivors were too few in number to continue their lineage. Rather than slowly die out here, they chose to leave. However, they wanted someone to watch over this place. They chose me. Sigrin went to her grippli allies and gave them her piece of the key. Where the dwarves were going, they couldn’t hold onto their memories and traditions. I think Sigrin made up a monstrous story about me. I probably deserved it,” the Guardian says with a grin, “but the story was to protect this place and the piece of the key.”

The Guardian stares at the last mural for a long time. “The dwarves left to join their cousins who lived in the jungle to the east. They never came back.”

The Golden Guardian looks like he is about to say more when suddenly a Kobold bursts into the room from the door you came through originally. “More intruders! They attacked us!”

As the new group of raiders continues to advance, you again hear various loud noises, some explosions, some cave-ins, and finally a scream followed by a loud reptilian death growl before a small group of Aspis Raiders bursts through the door.

They look at you, your eyes meeting in mutual hatred and then the battle begins. Their leader stands in the back, hefting a massive greataxe over one shoulder until she is close enough to use it, while the three thugs leveling heavy crossbows before her spread out a bit into the room along with their pet hound, a feral leopard.

The team looks a lot more worse for wear, but still capable threats, and clearly have no intentions of talking things through. Just as they enter, the sword in Kylar's hand suddenly seems to flow with powerful magic, hungering for the blood of the Aspis Agents.

Kylar:

While Nicolae remains hidden, (he hopes), Kylar, gripping the blade tight as it radiates hunger for Aspis flesh, rushes forward, slicing hard into the nearest one. It's not enough to put him down, but Caith isn't far behind, and finishes the job with a quick slam, then punts the corpse hard against the far wall. In that case, you took 8 less damage, and where just healed back to full.

Seeing his friend in trouble, Garret rushes towards Caith's aid, though it seems he might be a little better off than it first appeared. As he lays a healing hand upon Caith, his wounds heal entirely, and it's only a moment before Kylar and Caith himself deliver devastating strikes, one magic and the other martial to kill the leopard.

You know what's bad, in just a few days, that would have been a +4, and actually hit. . .

On a direct hit, yes, yes they can. It doesn't do anything for the splash, though.

@GM;No charge, and it only matters for the second hit if you didn't include the -1 from the prayer on the to hit

@Rodrick, Yes you can crit with bombs but it only adds one +1d6 on a crit (and I think static modifiers but on that one I'm not 100% sure)

Caith in his state or rage continues to pound at the Aspis in front of him
(keep rage going)

Garret holds, readying to heal anyone that might need it quickly, while Kylar launches another magical spray of acid, burning into the dark knights arm and sizzling some of the skin and muscle below it. Caith, seeing another obstacle in his way rushes to pound into it, again utilizing his unorthodox, though effective chosen weapon. The man's screams of pain, for just a moment, catch everyone's attention, leaving the smallest opening that Roderick takes advantage of, flinging yet another bomb that lands hard right on target.

With their numbers dwindling, it's clear the Aspis Consortium team isn't up to the task, and you cut (and burn) them, squashing their attempted raid under your boot heel.

The Kobolds, standing near the Golden Guardian simply watch, unsure what to think or do. The Golden Guardian then speaks, "You remind me of another. I wasn't sure what to think until it was too late. But, I'll take you to him."

With the Kobold's help, you excavate a section of tunnel you hadn't seen before, and behind it, find a single body. There is nothing noteworthy about it, though a smashed Wayfinder in a breast pocket hints that it is the one you where sent to find before this whole thing escalated out of your control. And while the news that Venture-Captain Sharrowsmith has fallen is saddening, for all of those that fall in the line of duty to the society is just another failure for all, you take some comfort in the fact that you have managed to complete his last mission for him.

Afterwards, the Golden Guardian asks you to leave. It's clear that while you have earned his, and thus also the Kobold's respect, they fear that your presence may bring others looking to despoil this once sacred place. They help you as they are able, but it's clear that you have worn out your welcome, for now.

With heavy hearts, you escort Sharrowmith's remains back to the nearest Pathfinder Society Lodge, into the care of his friend, and now successor, Nantambu, who had asked you to look into the matter in the first place. Nantambu will not be the same without my friend Nieford Sharrowsmith. "When he was younger, he traveled to all corners of the Mwangi Expanse and truly made the region his home, despite having been born hundreds of miles away in Avistan. He never truly lost his adventuring spirit, and as this lodge grew, he found his hours dedicated more and more to paperwork and less and less to exploring the lands’ rich history. I know his soul would take no offense at my saying
he died as he would have wished, . . . active, engaged, and in the field. I take solace in being able to provide him proper funerary rites."

“With his passing, Sharrowsmith’s Exports has no Venture-Captain, but I have corresponded with Nieford’s colleague Ambrus Valsin and agreed to act as the temporary manager of the lodge. After all, the full extent of the Pathfinders’ involvement in Nantambu has remained a something of an open secret, and it would be an embarrassment for anyone but a friend or family member to take command of the business so soon after the owner’s death.”

“I dearly appreciate what you have done for the Society, for your venture-captain, and for me. I will remember it.”

The End.
