Seeing all the wards, Amelia thinks if she knows such spells.

"Hold on, should we be facing a dragon, I prefer to be prepared."

The only other "buffs" I have are Haste and Sense Vitals really, and Haste is super selfish now that we lost our other frontliner. Might swap it for Dance of a Thousand Cuts or whatever down the road.

"Can these things teleport? Master of planes and such?"

If someone shares that information, she will actually ready a Dispel Magic to Counterspell any dimension shifting spells it might have, using Luck to grant a +8.

Older vortex dragons can teleport and travel the planes, but young ones cannot do so on their own.

As you appear around the dragon, it looks up at you in surprise. "This isn't what it looks like..." it says lamely, then it growls and prepares to attack!

It quickly opens its maw and breathes forth flames! Though Liam's spell protects you from harm, the interior of the house proves quite flammable, the furniture and tapestries catching ablaze!

Thanara attempts to charm the dragon, but her spell has no effect!

Everybody but Thanara may act.

Hmmm... Liam has Create Water, Katria can use Legacy Weapon to give a weapon the Quenching property, and any documents we gather up are protected by our fire resistance. Those are a few ideas.

"On it!" Katria replies, her mind racing with possible options. Control winds to blow the papers away from the dragon? Resilient sphere to trap the bag in with herself? She shakes her head and concentrates on her strange magic, then uses her mind to pull the mailbag to her side.

Telekinetic Mastery (Sp):

As a standard action, you can expend 1 point of mental focus to grant yourself telekinetic power. This functions as telekinesis, except you don't need to concentrate on the effect to maintain it, and using any one of its effects is a standard action. This effect lasts for 1 round per occultist level you possess. You must be at least 9th level to select this focus power.

28 hits so you don't have to use the luck, Amelia.

As Katria drags the mailbag to her side, Liam and Amelia lay into the dragon. Liam scores some deep hits with his relic dagger, then Amelia bashes it across the head with the flat of her blade. It drops to the floor, lying still.

The dragon's head thrashes back and forth for a few moments before something horrid claws its way out of a hole in the back of its skull. Devoid of a head, or any features at all save for four short, clawed legs, this creature’s body looks like a large, glistening brain! It focuses its thoughts on Amelia, attempting to confuse her!

Amelia must succeed at a DC 18 Will save or be affected by confusion for 8 rounds. Everybody may act!

Knowledge (dungeoneering) DC 23:
This aberration is an intellect devourer! Incapable of experiencing emotions or wallowing in the sins of physical pleasure on their own, intellect devourers are forced to steal bodies in order to indulge their gluttony, lust, and cruelty. Stories tell of entire cities of these creatures deep underground, where host bodies are worn like clothes to hideous orgies and vile feasts.

Katria's magic pins the brain creature in place, then Amelia's and Liam's furious assault makes short work of the monster, reducing it to a bloody pulp. It wears a ring of mind shielding. You work quickly to extinguish the fires before they can do too much damage. There isn't much of value in the house save for a scimitar of the planes hanging on a wall.

Aside from the documents, the bag contains the body of the postmaster. She bears a similar exit wound as the dragon, suggesting this parasite had been controlling her previously.

The documents represent decades of stolen missives, false identities, and written instructions. It's clear that this operation has spied on and steered local politics for a long time. Of particular note, you recover several letters instructing the postmaster to take any necessary steps to ensure the medusa Tsemani wins the upcoming election, including tampering with the ballot system.

Avoid making real-world political statement, avoid making real-world political statement, avoid making real-world political statement...

"Yes," Katria says, still distractedly studying the smear, frustrated that she couldn't identify the monstrosity. "At least it's good to know that it wasn't the postmaster intentionally being corrupt. If only everything were so simple back home, but I don't think it's veiled masters we have to worry about."

She eventually picks up the ring. "This could be useful. Oh, and that scimitar too if anyone wants to use it. Though I don't know who it rightfully belongs to..."

"This being Axis, we should file a report with Lieutenant Fanalyx. Maybe she will let us use the scimitar for the time being."
Amelia is proficient but already has a relic blade. Katria is proficient but has 10 Str. So not sure we have a ton of use for this.

"This isn't proof that Tsemani was in on the conspiracy - there is such a thing as 'unwitting pawn' - so we should be clear about that in our report."

Liam looks at the remains of the mental parasite.
"I imagine there will be a lot of paperwork and a lengthy inquiry, untangling what was done over the past few decades."

"Should we report back to the Lieutenant and then call it a night?"

We did spend eight hours investigating at the post office.

Agreed; I'm more likely to keep using dignity's barb.

Katria nods with Liam's plan. "As always, that makes sense."

As you are making your way back to the police station to report your findings to Lieutenant Fanalyx, a tremendous clattering of collapsing stone echoes over the district. It quickly becomes apparent that part of Sayashto's cemetery has collapsed!

By the time you arrive on scene, hundreds of inevitables and axiomites have surrounded the cemetery grounds. Lieutenant Fanalyx makes her way to you and hails you. "I am glad you've come. Part of the Hall of Final Deeds sank into the ground, which coincided with a supernatural presence that began spilling out of the ground and contaminating the area. This contamination stands to poison the local waters and usurp part of the plane's quintessence, so our forces are focusing on containment. My standing orders are to avoid contact with the enemy. Those same orders don't extend to you, though. I'd like you to inspect the disaster's epicenter. Find out what caused this and do what you can to remove the source of the contamination."

Katria looks at the others. She's certainly exhilarated still from having all the paperwork to go through, and up for more work today. It doesn't seem to directly be related to their efforts, but remaining on Lieutenant Fanalyx's is probably worth the effort.

"I think we can do that," she says, looking to the others.

"I am devout enough, Amelia, but I haven't had much time for formal study of magical phenomena. My suspicion of necromancy was just due to the location - this happened in the graveyard. If there is other magic at work as well, then Katria may be able to figure out what to do."

Liam does intend to give the Lieutenant a full report, but will wait until after this problem is dealt with.

He uses his 1st-level Pearl of Power to recall and re-cast Shield. He casts his second prepared Shield of Faith as well as Death Ward on himself before entering the cemetery.

He then uses the Band of the Crusader's Alliance to cast Disrupting Weapon on Koriana's Blade.

I think the Band is base CL 11 (does that increase with Triumphs?) so any undead of 11 HD or less that is hit by the sword must make a Will save or be destroyed (SR does not apply). The DC should be 17, I think, like a wand or scroll would be. Hopefully, Amelia can one-shot these things with Disrupting Weapon.

If only I was able to take an Immediate, Koriana's Blade actually absorbs negative energy like the drain...

Reeling from the blow, she readies her weapon and feels the spell from Liam. Knowing that their drain will harm her allies worse than her, she performs a slow, deliberate slash.

"Stay back, I'll draw in what I can."
Activating Koriana's Blade as a free action, giving Amelia +3 AC, and Liam +1, it should leave the weapon at a +1, enough to Parry Incorporeal creatures with.

Blessed by the band's magic, Amelia destroys one of the strange undead with a single strike of her blade! Katria and Thanara batter another spirit with magic missiles.

At the same time, Liam notices what seems like two open graves slithering across the ground toward him! One suddenly stretches out beneath him, opening up an extradimensional hole and trying to get him to fall in!

Liam can make an attack of opportunity, but immediately falls into the extradimensional space following the attack. If he forgoes this attack of opportunity, he can attempt a DC 23 Reflex save to avoid falling into the extradimensional pit.

The pit is 40 feet deep (dealing 4d6 falling damage). The interior surface of the pit is as hard as rough stone. While the pit is open, a creature inside can climb out with a successful DC 24 Climb check.

"Liam!" Katria calls out as the cleric disappears. "Be careful, everyone! Those graves are alive!"

She pauses for a moment as she realizes that may be the strangest thing she's ever said 1, but then springs back into action. Moving away from the graves, she concentrates and suddenly three shadow lillends appear.

Shadow Beast (Sp):
As a standard action, you can call forth one or more beasts made of shadow by expending 1 point of mental focus. This functions as shadow conjuration, but it can be used to duplicate only the effects of summon monster spells. Creatures created with this spell deal 50% of the normal damage to those that disbelieve the illusion, and their nondamaging effects have only a 50% chance of affecting disbelieving targets. This can be used to duplicate any summon monster spell up to summon monster V. For every 2 additional levels you possess beyond 9th, the maximum spell level you can duplicate with this ability increases by 1 (to a maximum of summon monster IX at 17th level). Regardless of the spell duplicated, the creatures remain for 1 round per occultist level you possess.

The first dives into the pit, planning to pull Liam out assuming he doesn't disbelieve, it has a fly speed of 70 and a Strength of 20. The second reaches out to touch Amelia casting cure serious wounds, 3d8 + 7 ⇒ (3, 6, 7) + 7 = 23, and the final one moves around the festering spirit fighting Amelia, hoping to catch it in a flank -- but the shadow stuff only goes so far and it's swing misses wildly.

Shadow lillend attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 = 10

1 This was, in fact, the strangest thing she'd ever said up to this point of her life. It would not be the strangest thing she would ever say, though -- see the Umbral Conference, following Eutropia's victory in the War for teh Crown.

Just a note that Amelia might have not been hit last round - she parried one attack, and Liam used Divine Interference on the second (giving up a 7th-level spell to impose a -7). Liam will use Divine Interference again if she is hit this round, giving up a 6th-level spell.
