Up is east on the map. North is to the left.
The small room to the east is an empty warden's office. However, while searching around in the previous chamber, you discover a secret door. The hall just beyond the secret door contains a trap that Liam's spell alerts him to. An array of poisoned dart launchers in the ceiling are primed to fire at anyone entering the room. You are able to disable the relatively simplistic trap without difficulty.
This series of rooms contain sitting space, a few beds, a basic kitchen, cupboards, and general storage for Lost Silhouette. A few doors lead out to the south, while a pair of secret doors are hidden in the north walls.
Amelia Reed |
Amelia listens, no doubt weighed down by the shadow that lurked in this place. "Very well, there is no love lost with the followers of the Reaper and I." Despite speaking with Taldaris, her instincts kick in.

"It makes sense that Norgorber's followers would have traps," Katria muses, as she follows Liam, Dignity's Barb out.
"I think the secret doors," she whispers to the others. "If they've gone to the effort to hide them, there's probably something worth looking into behind them. ... Unless they just routinely hide doors as some sort of tribute to their god of secrets."
DM Brainiac |
The first secret door here opens into a long tunnel that leads away from Lost Silhouette--a back way into and out of the complex. The second one opens into a narrow hall that ends at another door. This cramped space is empty but for pages of notes and sketches. A pair of tweezers sits atop one of the drawings.
A shadow detaches itself from the wall, two eyes gleaming amid an otherwise featureless humanoid body. "The Secret Shade!" Taldaris declares.

Not bad - if all those hit, then it's almost as much damage as Heal would have done on a successful save, and that was the other option I had in mind.
Liam's incorporeal touch AC is 22 rather than his regular Touch AC of 18 (since Shield spell applies) but that won't make a difference if the Shade has +21 to hit. So just have to hope we can drop it before it Str-drains us to 0.
If the Shade gets a critical threat, Liam will use Divine Interference, expending a Liberating Command to force a reroll of the attack at a -1 penalty.

Yuck, now I need to redo my entire attack sheet!
Amelia will use the Blade to absorb the first negative energy hit against her after this one.

DM Brainiac |
Right, forgot it was ghost touch!
Katria blasts the Secret Shade with magic missiles, then Liam tears into it with Scion's Dagger, ripping apart its spectral form. With an anguished sigh, the shadow fades away into oblivion.
"Well fought," Taldaris declares. "The Secret Shade has been destroyed. Now, to find Hamal Kai and recover my halberd."
The tweezers here are enchanted with the ghost touch property and are worth 1,000 gp. The documents are fragmentary, but collectively they suggest that the Secret Shade was once a wanted man in the cities of Vyre and Absalom. Underneath one of the pages sits a tiny, crank-driven music box that only plays part of a long-forgotten ode.
Katria Delaval |
LOL at ghost touch tweezers. Also, I love Vyre. Great location...
Katria nods, pulling out Dignity's Barb again. "Let's see if we can find him," she says after collecting the music box for further research later on. When she has a minute, she'll do an object reading on it, but no rush on that (and I realize there may be no other back story to it).
Not sure where we are on the map, but I moved K's fig to where I figure we can start looking next.

So from the Discord, it sounds like where Katria is on the map is D17, apparently the Shade's room with items from its prior life. I put Liam where I think we should go next.

Katria identifies the undead as herecites. Herecites are a particularly blasphemous form of undead created via an obscure ritual of sacrifice, wherein a priest of an evil god offers up at least five worshipers of a nonevil deity to her own deity. All of the sacrifices must worship the same deity. Upon the deaths of the sacrificed worshipers, their souls and bodies seethe and surge with negative energy and then melt away, only to re-form into a single entity. Herecites, once created, typically remain as guardians for the temple responsible for their forced conversion and do not seek a greater purpose in their new unlife.

Katria winces again at the latest blast, and lets her wall of force dissipate, so they can move into the room and perhaps plan their own ambush.
Liam of Kozan |
Will: 1d20 + 22 - 5 ⇒ (13) + 22 - 5 = 30
Liam will use the Band of the Crusader's Alliance to cast Death Ward on himself.
He also has one prepared, in case we want to keep going after the one from the ring wears off.
The ring is CL11, so it will last for 11 minutes, and during that time will suppress the effects of the negative levels from Enervation.
If we have another round, he will channel to heal the party (and Taldaris, if he is accompanying us).
Channel: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 4, 2) = 20
Amelia Reed |
"What were those? Vile things truth be told."
She cleans her weapon, making sure to remove all the black ichor from it.
DM Brainiac |
Taldaris is there, yes. Sorry, haven't mentioned him in a while.
"Corrupted followers of Norgorber," Taldaris says flatly. "They will be coming back soon. Be ready!"
Indeed, only a short time later, the two undead come charging down the corridor behind you! Luckily, you are ready for them, and after a brief skirmish, you are able to destroy them.
Handwaving a low danger encounter.
The formulae and calculations on the ceiling and the bronze plaque the zelekhut is staring at seem utterly discordant with known mathematical theory.
Let me know if you want to study either of them closer.
Several logbooks are on the table. Each one contains numerous inevitables' identification numbers and routines for infecting their minds with incoherent mathematics. One book is currently open, identifying the zelekhut here as Pvarish-19.
Katria Delaval |
Of COURSE I do!
It's not history, but Katria still can't help but be fascinated by the informaiton on the ceiling. Hopefully there's not a symbol of insanity or death or something up there...
Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (1) + 25 = 26
Katria gasps a little bit at the information in the book. "Liam," she whispers, "we may need your magic here."
Amelia Reed |
K: Planes for fun: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Amelia had no clue what it was, but when she saw Katria worried, she became concerned.
"So what is it? You can't leave a lady in the dark like that." What can I do to solve a magical problem like this anyway? She crumpled her nose, but only for a moment before putting up her glamer again.
Liam of Kozan |
Katria makes it on a 1!
"What would you like me to do?"
Assuming Katria explains once she recovers from reading the insane mathematics, Liam will cast Heal on the Zelekhut.

If there's a Caster Level check involved for whatever reason, use my +8 from Luck
Amelia Reed |
Amelia closes her eyes and listens before opening them up.
Perception: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (6) + 29 = 35
Giving a little spin and a taking a deep breath she points at a door.
Random Door! Go!: 1d3 ⇒ 3 Starting with 12 o clock as result 1.
DM Brainiac |
The southwest door opens into a central chamber. Several catwalks crisscross a deep pit in this frigid room. Along the walls are six vertical grooves, each fitted with a looped chain and each one controlled by a different nearby pulley mechanism. Dangling from these chains are columns of living bodies, some emaciated and others painfully bloated.
Upon spotting you, the pitiable petitioners begin to cry out for help! The dozens of prisoners here promise anything in exchange for their freedom, from atoning for their crimes to the secret of where to find buried treasure.
Another door exits this room across the catwalk.
DM Brainiac |
These petitioners are known as the hunted. Abaddon's hunted petitioners appear greatly emaciated, serving as the lowest tier of the food chain. Many are consumed within hours of arrival, and those who survive longer never know a moment of peace and start to prey on each other before becoming daemons.
Katria surmises that each of these petitioners must have worshiped Norgorber in life and found themselves condemned to this fate for some moral or practical failing.
Amelia Reed |
"I feel like destroying them would just play into the daemon agenda."
She averts her eyes and her voice has a hint of a quiver, "Let's move on."
Liam of Kozan |
"I would wish to free them if there were some way to redeem a petitioner once Pharasma has judged them, but I believe it to be too late.
And I do not wish to tamper with the River of Souls."
Amelia Reed |
Where will I go when this all ends?
The lady was lost in thought, wondering if her ambition would lead her to torment.
DM Brainiac |
You ignore the petitioners' pleas and cross the room. A large table stands in the center of the next room, surrounded by eight human-sized chairs and two much larger seats. The entire room is supernaturally kept at a dim light.
Two more undead axiomites are here, along with a lanky, fanged humanoid in a long coat and tall hat. It radiates an almost palpable aura of horror. They have cornered another creature, a female devil with rust-colored skin and a jutting crown of ridge-like horns draped in lenghty contracts.
"We have you dead to rights, Phlagomi," the horrific humanoid says in a throaty voice. "The Secret Shade doesn't appreciate guests sneaking around their abode."
"Oh?" the devil says, her eyes flicking to you. "Then they definitely won't like those people over there, will they?"
The axiomites and the humanoid turn to face with you, reaching for their weapons, as the devil steps back to avoid the conflict!
Katria: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Liam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Enemies: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Everybody may act. The humanoid radiates an aura of fear. The first time a creature ends its turn within the 30-foot aura, it must make a DC 25 Will save or become shaken for as long as it stays within the aura. If the creature succeeds at the saving throw, it cannot be affected again by the aura for another 24 hours. This is a fear effect.
Liam of Kozan |
Liam will use the Standard to call for a Battle Charge (swift) as he charges the humanoid.
Liam is immune to fear because of Deific Obedience (16-HD Sentinel boon); everyone else is now immune because of the Greater Heroism from the Battle Charge. (And everyone gains 11 temp HP.)
Attack, Charge, Greater Heroism, PA -4: 1d20 + 21 + 2 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 21 + 2 + 4 - 4 = 39
Damage: 1d4 + 9 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 8 = 21
Weapon is +5 so bypasses all DR except /epic, /B, and /-.
Nobody takes an AC penalty from charging this round, so Liam is AC 36.

Seeing Liam taking on the bogeyman, she focuses instead on the nearest axiomite to him, bringing Dignity's Barb to bear.
Dignity's Barb (+4 seeking darkwood light crossbow, +1 within 30 ft.): 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (7) + 20 = 27

Amelia Reed |
"Forward!"
Amelia has no care for the squabbles of the bogeyman and the contract devil, but knows that right now one is trying to kill them.

She rushes forward and channels her ability to twist fate, hoping to put Koriana's Blade deep into the bogeyman.
