Karla Teg |
When the cloud dissipates, Karla speaks up to them: "Look, it is fairly simple. You can see that we have put an end to Halk Grundlechar's heinous reign of terror. It was a short one. Now, you have a choice. Will you leave peacefully and promise to never come back here? Think carefully."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Wulfram Bartos |
"You have a chance to return to you homes," Wulfram added. "Do not waste it. We prefer to live peacefully with those who are peaceful towards us. We have the strength to deal swiftly with those who are not."
Diplomacy, aid another: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
DM Brainiac |
The giant spriggan shrinks back down to just a few feet tall. The two humanoids holds their hands up in a non-threatening manner. Assuming you give the space to do so, they walk past you slowly before quickly scurrying down the stairs and out of sight.
Halk has on him a potion of bear's endurance, scroll of invisibility, 3 scrolls of cure moderate wounds, Small magic chain shirt, Small magic club, Small mwk dagger, Small mwk frame drum, red wool scarf (15 gp), and a silver tankard shaped like an old dwarven woman (50 gp). Detect magic reveals a magic aura inside one of the stone boxes in the room. Smashing them open reveals 5,305 sp, 1,403 gp, two emeralds (500 gp each), a magic pearl, and a terrible odor, as if somebody tried to "save" a particularly noisome belch inside a box.
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram examined the magic items to determine their properties.

I'm using up all my good rolls out of combat:)
He gave Karla his remaining potion of cure light wounds to heal Niko some more.
If possible, he'd like to save the cure moderate wounds scrolls for in-combat use. We shouldn't leave Niko with significant injuries, though.
DM Brainiac |
Korrigan club*, pearl of power (2nd level), +1 chain shirt
Korrigan Club: Etchings of small, hairy folk adorn this knotty +1 thundering club. Once per day as a standard action, a wielder can animate his own hair to wield the club without his hands for 4 rounds, as if the korrigan club had the dancing weapon special ability. A wielder's head hair or beard hair must be at least 2 feet long to activate this ability. Sundering the wielder's hair (hp 2) immediately causes the korrigan club to fall to the ground and renders the wielder unable to activate this special ability until the lost length regrows. [Cost: 13,400 gp]
Eustoma Hadlefoot |
Eustoma taps Nik'o one more time with the wand.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
"That's some nice equipment he had. I don't think I want the club though. I like my hair. I have a shirt that's just as good, and that one stinks." Eustoma curls up her nose at the smell.
"Shall we go find the brother that stitches things together?" Eustoma asks.
Wulfram Bartos |
"You'd have to grow your hair well down below your waist to use that club!", Wulfram replied with a laugh. "You'd be practically sweeping the floor!
Two foot long hair? We'd need a tonic of hair growth to use the club!
"Yes, that Bristle Billie needs to be stopped! Let's check the top of the keep, although I think the guard I overheard earlier made it sound like he's in one of the towers."
When everyone was ready, Wulfram climbed the next flight of stairs.
From the map, it looks like the next floor is the top.
DM Brainiac |
There is a door leading into the southeast tower, but it appears to have been sealed into the walls and does not open. Wulfram leads the group upstairs to the top floor of the keep.
A heavy wooden table—scarred with fire and cracked in half—occupies the center of this chamber. A wide balcony to the west provides a commanding view of the courtyard, and several wooden doors are set into the walls.
A brutish, one-eyed giant stands in this room. He carries a large, well-made axe and wears a simple tunic. He has a head of shaggy hair, and the lower half of his face is obscured by a bristly, dark beard.
The giant roars and hefts his axe!

Biello: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
He quickly stomps over to Wulfram and attacks, his blade clanging against the shaman's armor.

Know Nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
"He's interesting. He's called an ohancanu, a brutal creature that delights in destruction. He is resistant to weapons not made of cold iron and his essence is tied to several long white hairs in his beard. Plucking them can drain his life energy. We'd have to steal them from his beard."
She fires two cold iron arrows into him.

Longbow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
I have a question. Since Wulfram has a reach weapon is he considered Flanking for my Coordinated Shot feat?
Sia-Wolf |
Sia bounds up and gives him a bite on his knee, and misses.
Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Wulfram Bartos |
Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Wulfram wasn't familiar with this type of giant, so he accepted her characterization of it. "That's not very friendly!", he cried, as the creature tried to slash him. "You're not going to make friends behaving that way!" He dropped his spear, pulled out his mace, stepped forward and swung two-handed at the brute.

Damage, two-handed: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Karla Teg |
Karla loads her crossbow with a cold iron bolt and passes it to the Halfling: "You're a much better shot than me!"
The axe she finds way too big and worries about the damage it could do. Best to keep him from swinging it with accuracy, she thinks and summons a shower of golden leaves to blind him, centered on the back wall to avoid her companions.
Cast Glitterdust, Will DC 16.
Nik'o, she keeps to her side for now.
DM Brainiac |
Eustoma, Wulfram is not in a position to flank the foe, but he can provide flanking with his spear to let use your feat.
Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Karla coats the ohacanu in glitterdust, but it resists being blinded.
Eustoma fires a pair of arrows, hitting the fey once. As Sia rushes in, the giant slices her with his axe, leaving a painful wound that throws off the wolf's aim.
AoO: 1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 10 - 1 = 253d6 + 9 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4, 4) + 9 + 3 = 21
Wulfram draws his mace and steps forward, bashing the giant's knee and bruising it.
Rogar hurls a javelin of stone that shatters harmlessly against the fey's tough hide.
Cirieo hobbles into the room and shoots Karla's crossbow, but the bolt narrowly misses his target!
Crossbow, Cover, Too Large: 1d20 + 11 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 11 - 4 - 2 = 16
The ohancanu turns back to Wulfram and cuts up the shaman good!

21 damage to Sia, 27 damage to Wulfram.
Wulfram Bartos |
"Ungh!", grunted Wulfram, as ohancanu cut him. "You'll pay for that — in a moment." Entreating the spirits, he mended his wounds.
Healing Hex, Frontier Healer (Wulfram): 2d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4, 6) + 5 + 2 = 17
Healing Hex is supernatural, so doesn't provoke.
Rogar Befin |
Rogar prepares another attack, and sends a block of stone flying at the giant's eye. Unfortunately, it blinks (or did it wink?) and Rogar misses.

DM Brainiac |
Karla blasts the giant with a magic missile, burning a small hole into his chest.
Eustoma scores another hit with an arrow, while Sia fails to hit again.
Wulfram takes a moment to heal the vicious wound the ohancanu dealt him.
Rogar hurls more stone, but the hulking fey dodges his blast once more.
Cirieo tries to shoot the giant again, but once more the aim is off. "Dang it! I gotta find a crossbow my size!" he laments.
Crossbow, Too Large, Cover: 1d20 + 11 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 11 - 2 - 4 = 9
The ohancanu keeps the pressure up, bringing his axe down towards Wulfram again. The shaman's defensive spells keep him safe from the deadly weapon.
Greataxe, Power Attack: 1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 10 - 1 = 23
Wulfram Bartos |
After attending to his own injuries, Wulfram bolstered Sia, to keep her in the fight.
Healing Hex, Frontier Healer (Sia): 2d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (3, 1) + 5 + 2 = 11
Rogar Befin |
Rogar tries a different tactic, focusing all of his power into a single boulder, crushing its size to an impossibly small pebble. He shoots it at the giant with incredible speed, whizzing across the room at the giant's eye.
Empowered Kinetic Blast, Piercing: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 263d6 + 12 + 6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6) + 12 + 6 = 30

Trip: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
DM Brainiac |
Eustoma drives two more arrows into the ohancanu's chest, while Sia manages a good bite, ripping at the muscles of the giant's leg.
As it roars in pain, Rogar hurls a pebble with incredible speed and force. This time his aim is true, the blast tearing through the fey's eye and lodging deep within its brain. The giant groans, wobbles, then topples to the floor with a terrific crash!
The ohancanu has a Large mwk greataxe on him.
When you get the chance to look around the top floor of the keep, most of the rooms appear to be quarters for the Rangers. Each contains a bed, a wardrobe, and a desk, but the furnishings have been vandalized by the fey. One of the wardrobes though is intact and locked, and there are several magical auras coming from within.
A DC 22 Disable Device or DC 25 Strength check will open the wardrobe.
The doors to the west are open and lead out onto the balcony overlooking the fort's courtyard. There seems to be something heavy on the other side of the door to the south blocking it from opening.
A DC 25 Strength check will open the door.
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram took a moment to catch his breath after the giant fell. "Do you have more healing potions in your haversack, Karla?", he asked.
Wulfram is down 12 HP — 2 potions of CLW would be about right. Alternately, he could use one of his scrolls of CMW.
Wulfram searched the various room in the top floor of the keep. When he found the intact wardrobe, he spent some time examining it and trying to open it.
Wulfram has a strenth modifier of +4, so taking 20 only gets him to 24. By RAW, Guidance adds to skill checks, but not ability checks. He will try prying with his dagger, if that helps. If all else fails, he will use the lvl 2 pearl of power to recall Bull's Strength and cast it again. I'm wary of smashing the wardrobe open for fear of damaging any fragile objects inside.
DM Brainiac |
If somebody assists you, Wulfram, they can take 20 too and help you reach the DC. I will assume Rogar does so.
Wulfram and Rogar work together to examine and pry open the locked wardrobe. It takes a few minutes, but eventually they are able to get it open. Inside is a lot of equipment that seems to have been taken from the Rangers--including several pieces sized for a halfling.
"Excellent! Here's my kit!" Cirieo says, reclaiming his gear. He returns Karla's crossbow and Eustoma's sling staff before strapping his studded leather armor. He frowns at the extra greave and boot that he no longer needs due to his missing leg.
There are two cold iron short swords, a magic gray-and-green cloak, a leather bandolier with loops for six potion flasks, and amagic falchion that is warm to the touch. The bandolier currently holds three potions of barkskin, two potions of cure moderate wounds, and an oil of magic weapon.
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram used a scroll to cure his remaining wounds, and then examined the magic items (although he didn't learn much).
Scroll of Cure Moderate Wounds: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (2, 8) + 5 = 15
Spellcraft (gray-and-green cloak): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Spellcraft (falchion): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Eustoma Hadlefoot |
"What a handsome hafling you are in your uniform." Eustoma blushes as she complements Ciciero.
"Don't forget I have that wand Wulfram if you want to make use of it." She taps Sia with it a couple of times. "Wulfram you would look good in that bandoleer.
Let me see the items. She takes a look at the cloak and the weapon.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
39/44 close enough
Spellcraft Green Cloak: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Spellcraft Falchion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram tried on the bandoleer and struck a heroic pose. "What do you think, Pele? Does it suit me?"
Wulfram Bartos |
"Bristle Billie might well be in that tower!", Wulfram declared. "What do think, Rogar? How quickly could you blast through the door? It might be faster than forcing it open using muscle power."
Rogar Befin |
"Aye, ah think ah can do somethin' wi' tha. Everyone ready? 'Ere we go."
Rogar spins, gathering elemental earth as he whips around and sends a mass of stone flying at the door.
Empowered Kinetic Blast: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 183d6 + 12 + 6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6) + 12 + 6 = 30
Pushing Infusion: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
DM Brainiac |
The door shatters into splinters, and the force of the blast knocks over the heavy cabinet that was blocking the other side. Arrow slits in the western, southern, and eastern walls look over the surrounding forest. A descending staircase in the northeastern corner ends suddenly, sealed over with stone a few steps down, and a large trap door in the ceiling is open. Several circular targets have been painted
on the walls in vivid blue paint, but the room contains only a few chairs, a small desk piled with empty wine cups, and four large braziers.
Four creatures squeak in surprise at your violent entry: miniscule, green-skinned humanoids that wield needle-thin rapiers. A pair of dragonfly wings holds each of the wee creatures aloft.
"Knaves!" one of them shouts, boldly brandishing her tiny blade. "You are guilty of most vile trespass upon our chambers! I challenge you to duel to prove your honor!"
