It's difficult to get the full story from the enraged Ghasts, but it seems that they had been random folk snatched up in the recent Hydra's Fang raids, beaten and starved. After the sacking of the Andoran village, the Hydra's Fang was racked down by a Chelish fleet, but rather then surrender, the Hydra's Fang fought, and in a stroke of luck, won. The fleet's lead ship rammed the Hydra's Fang, it's headpiece punching a hole in this lower deck, but failed to sink it. However, these bound prisoners where trapped, and unable to escape, drowned as the water reached the ceiling. Rather then try to save them, the bastard crew instead locked them inside, hoping to stop the water from rising too much.

From what you can tell, they are speaking the truth. They want vengeance on the Hydra's Fang's crew, though, once that is done, they very well might turn on you and any other living creature.

Their rage building quickly at seeing the possibility of freedom so close, they say once more, "Release us now and we sill not kill you with the rest. I saw where he keeps his treasure when he took me to his bed. Once we are free, I'll tell you. You can get it, take this chest, and flee. This ship, and her crew will not survive past this night. I swear it!"

Breaking their chains, the Ghast's nod at you in thanks and respect, then as horde, rush past you. One of the crewmen, coming to check on all the noise, is tackled, seemingly frozen in place as the pack kills him.

Walking to the stairs, the burst out and begin to charge at the closest pirate they see, at first ganging up on individuals, then in their fury, rushing and attacking whoever they see as soon as their current victim is dead.

Below deck, as they flee, the ghast's knock down one of the lanterns hanging by the door in their haste. It cracks, leaking it's oil in a large stain on the wall and pooling at the floor. The small flame of the lantern touches the spilling oil, and catches fire. it follow the trail up the wall, igniting other lanterns. Before you can react to put out the fire, it grows, and will quickly spread through the rest of the ship, (but is not blocking your exit from the room, yet).

Grabbing the small chest, you begin to rush out, likely to look for a rowboat of some type to get off this doomed vessel, but then stop. You only have a short time before the fire spreads, cutting off your access to the below deck (without taking damage). You have the chest, but it's locked. It is heavy, but and by shaking it you hear coins inside, but not enough to account for the total weight. . .

A.) You can take a round (or more) to try to search each room down here for the tablets and other treasure.
B.) You can leave below deck to try to make your way to the captain's chambers, or to try to find a suitable escape route from the ship.

Kryssa (Cpt's room)

Horef, along with Savage and his pet do a quick search through the below deck, finding a crudely formed black slate tablet wrapped in a protective cloth. Written in Old Azlant, it bears an inscription of some sort, but bears the marking of one of that people's now extinct noble houses.

Speak Old Azlant or Linguistics DC 30 (for quick glance):
I have no idea what the tablet actually says, but it seems important as a historical record, and will certainly help to understand the world's history as well as some of the mysteries of that long dead language.

Rushing above deck, Kryssa and Rhuul go for the captains chambers, but are forced to move cautiously once up top, avoiding the slaughter, while Vrothum begins looking through the small rowboats. He finds one, but it has no oars to move it. True to their word, the Ghasts refrain from attacking you, focusing their fury on the true ship's crew.

Below deck, the flames begin to spread more, catching on the pitch that is used to seal the boards of the ship against water. With the far room having been recently flooded, it holds the flames at bay, but the stairwell going up to the main deck is aflame at it's boarders, and you are not sure how much longer you can hold before it becomes dangerous to try to move through it.

That same flame is beginning to make it's way to the top deck as well, and while not currently a threat, who knows just how long the main deck will remain stable, or how long you might have before the hull is compromised, sending the entire craft below water.

Savage, Storm, and Horef make a break for the top deck just in time for the flames to cut off their exit, as Kryssa and Rhuul reach the captains quarters, finding the door closed, but not locked. Inside, despite all of the battle going on all around you, they hear a scuffle within as well. Pushing the door aside, Kryssa takes an arrow to the back of the shoulder from one of the pirates, aimed at a nearby undead.

Outside, the fire has begun to come up, weakening the floorboards of the main deck, and in a few places, even going through it to catch rope and bits of sail aflame as well. Inside the Captain's quarters, you see Du Moire alone, fending off a ghast with his well made longsword. Odds are not in his favor, but he could potentially strike a lucky blow, as he seems to know how to use the blade well. The ghast pays you no mind, focusing on gaining her vengeance with his blood. Just behind him, in addition to a small assortment of treasures, you see a large chest, and hear Vrothum call out that he has found a suitable boat.

@ Kryssa: You can, but it's probably going to be more of a Diplomacy check, unless you are sort of trying the "join my faith or die" form of redemption.

@ Savage: You are only a few minutes out to see, but between a combination of how the city dumps a lot of garbage (dead fish and spoiling food) into the water, in addition to the odd trap you noticed on the ship, it's very likely that sharks are about. You noticed that the city did also have seacats, so that's pretty likely as well. Otherwise, anything on the SNA list that could reasonably venture this close to land or this "shallow" of water, <it's pretty deep, but it's not likely larger animals would come this close like a whale, normally> would be fine. Dolphins shouldn't be an issue. Off the 1st and 2nd level list, for aquatic animals, also Squid, Octopus, and Water (or other) Elemental are al fin.> However, you should note that a suitable boat and oars have already been found.

Should have been "out to sea" and not "out to see".

Kryssa attempt to win over Cu Moire's soul towards the light, but the cad basically spits in her face (not literally), mocking her and her morality, until the ghast lands a solid blow, freezing him in place. Turning to the party, she says "I can't,. . . I can't hold back much longer. Take it," pointing at the chest, "and go!"

Gifthorse + Mouth, Rhull grabs the chest and flees, leaving Kryssa to watch as the ghast looses control and begins to devour the man alive, just before fleeing.

Not far, Vrothum calls out that it's time to go, and begins to lower the small boat down. The flames burst through the lower hull, and begin climbing to the top of the ship as the rest of the party rushes to the escape. Hosef, Savage, Storm, and Vrothum drop the boat to the water, then begin to climb in, waiting for their allies, when a small explosion blasts a hole through the side of the ship next to them. There must have been a case of powder below deck, and who knows how many others. It's clearly not safe, but. . .

Running as fast as his dwarven legs will allow and cursing dwarves and boats, Rhuul make his way with the larger chest, vaulting over the railing to land on the boat just below just before one of the hanging lanterns catches fire and ignites, sending a small wave of liquid flame over a section of the deck.

What fee monsters are left aboard, both pirate and undead that have yet to fall to blade or claw are trapped in the flame, as is Kryssa. Struggle to cut the ropes that the small rowboat is still attached to, that will drag it down as the Hydra's Fang finally sinks, the rest of the party is left debating on if they need to save themselves now, or wait for Kryssa, still somewhere on the doomed ship.

Then she breaks through the thick smoke, charging as fast as her chapped legs can. A pirates last action before dying, that one that tried to cheat you earlier is too loose a bold, catching her in the leg just before she can leap. She stumbles, setting of the trap, dropping refuse and various organs (some of them not aquatic) into the sea all around the ship, summoning sharks who can "smell" the blood.

Not quit able to leap over, she calls on her rage, and hits and rolls over the wall. Vrothum, Horef, and Savage all spring up to catch her, saving her from an ignoble death.

Rowing away, you watch as the Hydra's Fang, is engulfed in flame, and sinks away beneath the waves. Cracking open the small chest, you find the remaining three tablets, one of copper, one of gold, and the last of lead. Each is like the first, written in Old Azlant, and bears a different seal of a now long dead noble house.

Inside the large chest, to your ire, you find a load of worthless rocks. On top of them, a single piece of paper crumpled up. Unfurling you, a single golden coin drops to the ground. Written in common Taldan, the paper is a mocking note, signed by Du Moire, taunting whoever stole "his priceless treasure".

By defeating the Hydra’s Fang and providing positive evidence of Du Moire’s defeat, the Pathfinders receive the rewards and blessings of the Chelish and Andoren embassies for saving their home countries from entering into what was sure to be a bloody war. Regardless of their public display, the two countries remain at brutal odds. Not that any such politicking matters much to the Pathfinder Society, which is only pleased if its field operatives succeed in getting the tablets.

As is common, you hardly have to for R&R before the next call for adventure beckons. . .
