Corinne:

Success! But please do not let the party know you were successful, since this knowledge would have come after a full eight hours of study. ;)

DC 25 (400 XP): At the time Harrowstone burned, five particularly notorious criminals had recently arrived at the prison. While the commonly held belief is that the tragic fire began accidentally after the riot began, in fact the prisoners had already seized control of the dungeon and had been in command of the lower level for several hours before the fire. Warden Hawkran triggered a deadfall to seal the rioting prisoners in the lower level, but in so doing trapped himself and nearly two dozen guards. The prisoners were in the process of escaping when the panicked guards accidentally started the fire in a desperate attempt to end the riot.

Are you Darcy? We have heard many good things about you! We know how busy you must be, managing this vast storehouse of knowledge but we have a great need! We need to find some information regarding the history surrounding the town and Harrowstone. It is a matter of great import. Only someone with your expertise could probably help us find this out. I am sure when we tell the town leaders of how critical you were in helping us with this research...
Anyone want to try and speak up for the assist? Diplomacy 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Wow, I have been blowing it so far on the diplomacy roles...

@Stannis: Noted. You can read the spoiler for Corinne.

Darcy narrows her eyes even more and straightens her spectacles, clearly unmoved by the friendliness. "Hmm... no appointment. I assume you have the necessary paperwork to access the town hall records?"

Female Human Wizard (conjuration) 2

DM & Stannis:
"You needn't hang over my shoulder, you know," Corinne tells Stannis, without raising her eyes from the pages of the dusty book she is reading. "Two people reading the same book won't make this go any faster."

These two will make a great odd couple. :)

Miss Darcy drums her long nails on the desk in front of her. "Well, do you have the proper forms or not?"

"I'm afraid that we haven't been informed that such a thing was necessary, my lady. What do we have to do to gain a quick peak into the annals of this town's history?", Quiddling says and smiles his best upperclass smile while running a gold coin up and down his fingers.

Phew. The urge to have Morven intervene was starting to get overwhelming ;).

"Ignorance is not an excuse, neither is cheek. I am afraid you cannot access the records until you have filled out the necessary requisition forms. Said forms can only be requested at the biweekly meeting of the town councilors. The forms necessary to present a request to the town council can be found on the shelf over there. Processing the forms to petition for forms to access the library take two to three business days to process." You could swear you saw the corner of her mouth twitch into a brief smile.

Sarrah steps in-between the two large men and the librarian, Theodric, calm down! We will not threaten people into getting what we want. If this lady will not help us to prevent the possible destruction of this town, then we will just have to find another way to get the information we seek. turns to Darcy Any tragedies that occur could be your fault Darcy, just remember that. We should go, obviously no help will be found here...

As you leave, you see the only sign of emotion from Miss Darcy is her quivering pen, but whether from fear or anger you cannot tell. "Threatening an adjunct of the town council is punishable by a fine, young man. I suggest you leave before I am forced to call upon Sheriff Caeller."

Returning to the Lorrimor residence, you discover that Corinne has had significant luck in her research.

You may all read the spoilers for Corinne.

Female Human Wizard (conjuration) 2

"Psh! Luck indeed! It's all a matter of proper study habits."

"...so you see, the prisoners weren't actually to blame for the fire," Corinne explains. "I mean, obviously, had they not rioted and tried to escape, none of this would have happened, but it was the prison guards who actually caused the conflagration." She shrugs slightly. "What any of that has to do with the Whispering Way or the poor Professor's untimely death, I don't know, but they do say knowledge is its own reward."

Reproduced for convenience.

DC 25 (400 XP): At the time Harrowstone burned, five particularly notorious criminals had recently arrived at the prison. The prisoners were in the process of escaping when the panicked guards accidentally started the fire in a desperate attempt to end the riot.

Silently absorbing the collected information, Kendra nods as she comes to a conclusion. "Two things have become obvious. One, that the fire of fifty years ago left such psychic pain and trauma that the lingering spirits of those who died have left a supernatural presence in Harrowstone. Two, that the Whispering Way has an interest in this supernatural presence. It appears that an investigation of the prison may be in order."

It is now early evening and the sun is nearing the horizon. Would the party like to rest for the evening, or pursue other activities?

M Human Paladin 2 (Undead Scourge)

Finding the supplies seems the logical first step. Also Stannis isn't bright enough to suggest this but perhaps we should conduct an investigation of the location the professor died. Do we even know where that is?

The inquisitor shrugs indifferently...

"I simply have no patience for suffering unneeded delays...though I have to admit, the outburst did feel pretty good..."

Upon hearing the results of Corinne's studies...

"Very well done. You have saved us from having to suffer that fool in town again. If for nothing else, I thank you for that."

Female Human Wizard (conjuration) 2

Shaking her head at Morven and Theodric's taste for conflict, Corinne asks disapprovingly, "Are there not enough forces arrayed against us that you have to antagonize people who ought to bear us no ill will? If you people insist on going into a dangerous haunted prison that has already caused the death of one good man, I hope you have the good sense to wait until sunrise."

Kendra shakes her head upon hearing of the incident at the town hall. "I should have warned you. Miss Darcy is... how do I say this diplomatically? Lacking in gregariousness? But it is good to hear that Corinne has found success with my humble library. The supplies my father found would certainly be helpful. Do you plan on retrieving them now, or waiting until morning?"

I don't recall asking for a lecture miss... Morven growls. But you have a good point. We should explore during the daytime.

"Investigation of the Harrowstone prison is indeed best implemented during daylight hours.", Quiddling starts. "How far off is the Pharasman temple? Perhaps we could try and secure some of the precautions the professor spoke of before we turn in for the night?"

HP- 7/13 (+1 Rage), AC- 15, CMD 13, Fort +8, Ref +3, Will +3, Perception +3, Init +1 Half-Orc Skald (Dragon, Totemic)

Hrrmm... It is unlikely the Pharasma worshippers would use anything that goes bump in the night to secure their stash. I'm up for taking a peek...

"I am not certain whether Father Grimburrow would mind you claiming the equipment. It was left nearly half a century ago, so I doubt that any of them know about it. It would be best to avoid asking questions if you don't want them to claim it regardless of your intent. In that case, perhaps it would be best to investigate the Restlands under cover of night."

"No extra hoods, I'm afraid. If this Father Grimburrow is atrue man of the Lady of Graves, he should have little issue with us using the items to put the restless dead to their final sleep."

M Human Paladin 2 (Undead Scourge)

It would be wrong to claim the items if they belong to the church, whether they know about them or not, Stannis says firmly.

Let us explain to the priests our need and ask if we may use the items.

To Kendra I know it is painful and I am sorry but can you tell usmore about how your father died? Where was he found?

Morven snorts in contempt.

If they care so little about their precious items that they forget they even exist, they don't deserve to keep them!

Female Human Wizard (conjuration) 2

"As loath as I am to subscribe to my colleague's viewpoint," Corinne puts in, "if you do as good a job seeking help from the church as you did from the town governance, perhaps it would be better to 'borrow' these items, whatever they may be, with a promise to Pharasma herself to replace them when you are done with them. If the priest declines your request to take them, what then? We would be openly at odds with the religious as well as the political structure of Ravengro. From the tales I hear of the goings-on in rural Ustalav, it is but a small step to a stirred-up populace bearing torches and pitchforks."

M Human Paladin 2 (Undead Scourge)

Its not about who deserves what, its about what's right. Stannis says stubbornly.

Female Human Wizard (conjuration) 2

"Torches. And. Pitchforks," Corinne repeats stubbornly.

HP- 7/13 (+1 Rage), AC- 15, CMD 13, Fort +8, Ref +3, Will +3, Perception +3, Init +1 Half-Orc Skald (Dragon, Totemic)

We'll be doing whats right by investigating and avenging the Professor's death as well as honouring his last wishes. You think Pharasma would deny a man his last wishes? If so she can kiss my half-breed ass...

Female Human Varisian Oracle - Life - 2nd (FC)

I am afraid that I must agree with the others Stannis. While it is not right to take what is not ours, until we prove that we mean well the people of the town will be suspicious and probably unhelpful to us. Don't blame them or get angry at them for being what they are. Sometime we must help those who don't seem to want to be helped.
If we are to go into a prison full of the restless dead though we will need all tools available to us. Pharasma would support us taking these items I think, even if suspicious clergy here might hoard what they have once they found out about it. If we must we can always replace any items we use if it comes to it.

"Then which will it be? Ask for permission from Father Grimburrow, or take the equipment stealthily and replace it when you are able?"

M Human Paladin 2 (Undead Scourge)

Stannis pauses to consider the others words. Finally he says, It may be as you say. The .. greater.. good is using what we can to defend the people. I still think we should talk to the priests though. How will we know if we follow the same end unless we ask?

No more robbery quips in front of the paladin :). Stannis is ready to go find the cache although I would also like to here the details from Kendra on her fathers death. That can wait though.

"I would of course prefer to ask the clergy first, but there must have been a reason why the professor didn't. As time is short i'm afraid that we don't have the luxury to ask Father Grimburrow for permission, should he refuse."

Stannis has got over asking them for the cache but why not just ask for their assistance. They may have info and presumably at some point we are going to need someone to bless a whole heap of holy water. Everyone is going to know what were doing eventually. It seems a bit rude not to tell the church. Stannis isn't this logical but he feels like a good thing to do.

Female Human Varisian Oracle - Life - 2nd (FC)

We can certainly go and talk to the father although we might want to wait until tomorrow morning. Lets go and borrow the equipment we need and then we can talk to the father tomorrow before proceeding to Harrowstone.

M Human Paladin 2 (Undead Scourge)

Agreed.

Stannis straps a large club to his back next to his falchion. It looks like an oak tree limb with wrapped leather for a handle. Ready.

Quiddling looks at the giant club with a hint of awe in his eyes. "Indeed you are", he says and swings his slingbag over his shoulder. "Off we go then!"

You make your way through the town of Ravengro, heading north along the road. Despite a few suspicious stares from passerby, little attention is paid to you. Most of the townsfolk are heading home from working in their fields, or stopping at the local tavern for a pint before retiring for the evening. At the town square you see various signs identifying the buildings you pass; "Ravengro General Store," "Jorfa's Forge," "Jominda's Apothecary," "Ravengro Jail," "The Silk Purse," and "The Outward Inn." At the north end of the town square is a posting pole that the locals leave news of nuptials, job postings for farmhands, or notices of missing pets.

The false crypt mentioned in the professor’s journal is located in the northeast corner of the Restlands, near the junction of the paths known as the Eversleep and the Black Path. The crypt itself is a freestanding granite mausoleum, the roof of which is decorated with a pair of leering gargoyle statues. A single stone door with a rusty-looking lock sits in the mausoleum’s south facade.

Perception DC 12:

An examination of the lock reveals that the lock is broken, its clasp melted by acid and then put back into place so that to casual observation the lock appears intact.

Quiddling returns the local's stares with a smile, bow and a tip of the hat. His eyes glimmer yeningly as the party passes the inn, but he decides not to strain whatever goodwill he's collected by suggesting a brief stop before venturing further into the nights endeavours. Instead he commits the name to memory and wanders past.

Perception check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Standing before the crypt Quiddling looks around to make sure nobody is watching and moves to the door to examine the lock as he fiddles in his slingbag.

"This lock is already broken. The clasp is melted. It seems like the good professor has done the hard part for us", he says abit surprised and stops searching around in his bag. He removes the lock and pushes open the door to peer inside.

"To be perfectly honest i did not know quite what to expect, my friend. I guess i expected that the professor to repair the lock but with time against him he had to have the restoration prosponed."

Female Human Wizard (conjuration) 2

Corinne casts a worried eye at the rapidly-darkening skies. "Oh, let's get this over with," she begs. "I don't want to be poking through a crypt in a strange graveyard after dark."

@Stannis - You do not detect evil.

Within, a flight of stone steps leads down into the cold earth.
