Part 5 of the Rune Stones saga.
This uses part of Open Design's Courts of the Shadow Fey.
Players went from level 11 to level 13 with remarkably little combat.
We lost Reason and gained Chary in this one.

Grr. Eated. Hit once with Thundertusk Boar Strike for 21 (incl. Chary), push the thing 1 square NW, made save. If 27 hit AC, another hit for 12 and push total 4 squares.


Boards are indeed uber-crumby.

The force of Tutavak's first arrow pushes the Eye Golem back over the comatose bodies of the Blinded. Resolutely, the young warrior regains the use of his feet and keeps his focus.

The golem shifts and once more turns his livid attention to Chary, Arianwyn and Whiteclaw. For the lissome drow, the attacks are too much and she crumples to the ground in a bloody heap.

Oh yea! Such fun...it doesn't feel good to be at -27!!

Was any of that damage radiant damage? If it was, I can negate some of it (but probably not enough to avoid unconsiousness, unless all three attacks (two from Golem and one from Blinded) were radiant).


Humblest apologies. Golem damage from Sun God's Hands is all radiant. Gaze doesn't do damage. Blinded do normal damage. Will see if I can hit the edit window for the prevous post.

Immediate Reaction - Shielding Shades vs attack. Reduces damage to 0.

Shadowy bats block the light form the golem's attacks. Arianwyn then tries to invade the Golem's mind (or whatever passses for it). He then backs away to avoid further pummelling.

Mire the Mind (inc Prime Shot) vs Will:

Arianwyn counters the radiance of the Eye Golem with more shadow of his own, fails to find a way into the alien mind before him and makes a hasty exit. The Eye Golem lashes out as he passes, but misses completely.

OA with threatening reach 3.

Not sure what Chary's status will be once she reduces the damage, so she and Kia can post at will and if it's a mess, on my head be it.

Kia can't do much, but she can help Chary. She shouts to Chary "Get up! we need you to fight!", then tries to free herself of her restraints.

no problem RevDM. Doesn't change anything functionally; Chary is at -7 instead of -27. After the healing word from Kia, it doesn't matter whether she was at -27 or -7 (as long as she didn't get to -44 that is).

Despite having some hit points, Chary stays right where she is...for now.


Enraged at the carnage, Kia lends a helping word to Chary and finally frees herself from the various effects clouding her mind and movement.

Chary hardly even realises how close she came to death, but huddles on the ground hoping, perhaps to be ignored.

Chary - I need a save v slow from you and a death save please, since Kia's healing arrived after you needed to make one.

Female Gnoll Warden 12 (Icewrought Sentinel)

Chary is up. Unlike previous editions, the only thing negative numbers matter for are dying saves and insta-death from negative bloodied. All healing of dying people brings them to zero first, then applies the heal (pg 295, PH). So, Chary has had to make a death save, and then is at 20 hp and prone.

My own preturn save: 1d20 ⇒ 1. Fail.

Whiteclaw can do - nothing. The golem's magic holds her in place for more precious time.

thanks Whiteclaw, that was my understanding of healing too, but she got the healing after her turn. so she is still prone and at 31/88 hp. perhaps a better plan would have been to delay, but I don't know if that is an option when dying.

I see the source of our confusion now. The difference in 20 hit points was not from being healed or not, it was that my armor has resist 10 radiant for the rest of the encounter. I was hoping that it would resist enough to avoid my reaching 0HP (from the two separate golem attacks), but with the damage from the Blinded, I was still knocked deathly silly! Oh well...like a mug a friend of mine gave me says "when the DM smiles, it is already to late"!


I was smiling :) Mostly my fault anyway as I forgot to say the Eye Golem was doing radiant damage, despite making a mental note to myself to do so.

Whiteclaw snarls as the Eye Golem's power continues to hold her down and befuddle her.

At the command of their master, the Blinded move to attack Whiteclaw, little realising that Chary has regained consciousness.

Chary bides her time, trying to stay inconspicuous while under the feet of the golem and chooses to let the blinded slide by.

Sorry Whiteclaw, but if I am going to survive the next round with golem, I need to get to my turn. I will try to make up for it on my turn (I hope).


This is what comes of not reading my own detailed notes. Sigh and apologies. I seem to be saying that a lot lately. Anyway, to sort this out.

Whiteclaw has failed two saves and took 10 ongoing radiant at the start of her last turn and fell prone for the first fail. For the second fail, the ongoing radiant went up to 15 and she now deals 5 radiant to any creature starting adjacent to her. That means that if she doesn't make her start of turn save, she will take out the last two Blinded automatically. She also takes the 8 damage from their attacks. 18 additional damage to Whiteclaw, 10 of it radiant.

after reading the previous posts by Tutavak and Chary, Whiteclaw kinda got screwed this round. Please know that Chary will do her best to make amends later, but two "sorry Whiteclaw"s in a row while taking multiple effects from failed saving throws can't feel good! Chary will buy several rounds when(if) we return. ;)


Determined to keep upright and keep attacking, Tutavak sends another pair of arrow singing towards the golem. One hits, digging deep into the marbled torso. Enraged and deciding to put an end to the warrior, the golem strides towards him.

Even as the great hands bring more pain to the companions, the marbled carapace cracks as a horrible mental feedback, some dim awareness of the pain of the Blinded perhaps, permeates the creature's alien brain. Hard though the battle has been, the end is in sight.

And will take 10hp damage for each attack.

Tutavak's normal glow flares with the golem's second strike, and the young warrior stands unharmed in front of the creature.

On second hit, use Bathed in the Light, an immediate interrupt which converts a radiant blow into equal healing. The hits cancel out.

The light of Kargzant streams through Tutavak's body, fortifying him and rebuffing the alien radiance of the Eye Golem. Moving menacingly down the grove, Arianwyn's dark ray of force misses, but draws the golem's attention to him. A useful distraction perhaps for his beleaguered allies.

Forgot Eye Golem's save v 10 psychic on attack.

Chary is battered badly by the golem, but still manages to keep acting. She crawls a short way away, trying to get out of the bright hands of the golem. She straightens up her inner chi and restores some of her own confidence and encourages someone else to do so also. Finally, she uses her final ardent surge on herself to try to get her back in fighting style.

Everyone except Kia and Tutvak has used their second wind, and Tutavak just eliminated the only damage he's taken this fight. Sounds like Kia to me.

Chary crawls a little closer to her glowing gnoll friend and urges herself on. Her confidence is infectious. Kia, too, feels the benefit.

Kia is very short of healing surges, but second wind will bring her to full health, so she will take that. Now only one surge left though.

Caught out of position, but allowed to move freely for the first time in the fight, Kia isn't sure what she should actually do. she decides to try and still the last two blinded.

Stow sword, take out bow, Commander's Strike. Kia invites Whiteclaw to take out one of the blinded, Whiteclaw gets an attack vs B9 to put it to sleep

Since I am dazed and prone, I don't think I can make the Kia inspired attack in any event, maybe she can give it to someone else? Preturn save: 1d20 ⇒ 19. If I'm reading that right, everything ends, so...

"This is an annoying realm, this fae land." Whiteclaw says as she rises once more, ignoring the falling of the last two blinded. Then she is shifting into the form of a large white wolf.

The wolf races forward, leaping over Chary, as she closes the gap on the golem, snarling and going for it's legs.

Charge to R17, ending with a Pounce, vs reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28, on hit: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 cold damage and the golem grants CA to the next person that attacks it before SOMNT

Actually, if you make your preturn save, the Blinded are both still up. Do you want to rethink or are you happy to go with your actions?

Honestly not sure about the Kia inspired action when you're dazed. It's not an OA or an immediate action, so I think you can do it.

In the earlier episodes of Runestones, we used to operate the rule that whenever someone granted another player a free attack, that play did the roll for them to speed things up. Should we reinstate that rule or do we all want to roll our own hits?

It was the combo of being both dazed and prone that made me think it wasn't really doable as an AO. I will keep my action, as well. Whiteclaw would go for the golem.

Contemptuously brushing aside the effects binding her, Whiteclaw rises as a white wolf. As she pounces on the golem, her passing attack misses the Blinded by a fraction, but her teeth sink deep into the marbled skin of the main enemy.

Unable to stop themselves, the last two Blinded converge on her again. Staggering now, they claw at the wolf's hide, snagging and slowing her pace.

Tutavak fumbles as he changes weapons under the thing's gazes, but still strikes a glancing blow.

7 on miss. EDIT: Wouldn't have had quarry damage from fighter power, but moot.


The Eye Golem ignores Tutavak's tentative blow and strides past both him and Whiteclaw to include Chary in its own attacks. With the possibility of defeat looming ever closer, the golem attacks without mercy, blasting all its available power at the luckless trio nearest to it.

Tutavak and Whiteclaw get OAs on Eye Golem.

Chary stays right where she is and waves her rapier at the golem, directing it to move a few steps.

Moving it from Q20 to R20 to S19 to T18 to U17, provoking attacks from Tutavak and Whiteclaw in the process.

I get one OA. The damage from the blinded put me at 31, the damage from the golem at -1. So, I'd have been down, barely but down, for the second OA. That OA: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21, on hit: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 cold damage..

Kia brings me back up at 35

Preturn save vs dazed and immob: 1d20 ⇒ 1. Fail

Whiteclaw pulls herself back up to her paws, then becomes a gnoll once more.

Normally, that would allow a one square shift, but immob negates that.

Then she lashes out, her axe seeming to become a mass of thorny vines.

Thorn Strike at the golem. 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30. On hit: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 cold damage and I pull it north one square. Mark all baddies. Made the important one :)

Saves vs slow: 1d20 ⇒ 1 and dazed/immobilized: 1d20 ⇒ 20

If you were prone, you can't stand and attack this turn due to the daze. You can attack from prone (and it will still hit). Reckoned you'd rather get the hit in than bother with standing up.

Returning to her true form, Whiteclaw axe sneaks out and drags the Eye Golem towards her. Desperately, the Blinded continue to batter at her bloodied body.
