Courts of the Shadow Fey (Rune Stones Part V - 4e)

Game Master Rev Rosey

Part 5 of the Rune Stones saga.
This uses part of Open Design's Courts of the Shadow Fey.
Players went from level 11 to level 13 with remarkably little combat.
We lost Reason and gained Chary in this one.

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Is that typed damage?

Oddly enough, it isn't. Just plain old normal damage. Going to edit so it sounds less dazzly.

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Okey-doke. 47/97 and dazed. And bloodied, obviously.

Female Drow Ardent 13

Chary bides her time until she can be more effective.

Chary delays, with the trigger her turn being when the Moon King is removed from the moon shine's effect, or the end of the order.

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Tutavak concentrates as best he can, and the moonbeam moves away from the king.

1 sq NW. Chary, be my guest.

Female Drow Ardent 13

Chary moves to the King's side, heedless of the demonkind nearby. Once she arrives, she strikes at the king, providing energy to Tutavak in the process. She then lays her hand on Whiteclaw and sends some strength to her friend.

move action: to P8 via O5 (accepting AoO from D4)
standard: energizing strike (augment 2): (19...Crit!)+18 VS AC
damage=44 (14 of which is cold damage)--breakdown: 2d8+10 weapon damage (26) + 3d6 (14) cold damage from crit + 4 damage from Kia's awesome arrow); AND Tut gets to spend a healing surge
Minor action: healing surge +14hp

great timing for a crit here...thanks for moving that Moonbeam Tut!

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

71/97, 7/9 surges, dazed. Thanks, and agreed!

Several things seem to happen at once. Tutavak manages to force the moonbeam away from the King and allows Chary to advance and strike. The drow's attack is outstandingly placed, dealing a potent blow. All this despite the best efforts of D4 to stop her.

OA from D4 v Chary (v Ref)
1d20+15=21. Miss.

The King takes good note of Chary's flanking movement and swiftly turns to strike both her and Tutavak with his orb.

"Do not touch the Royal Person!" Although Tutavak can't avoid the blow, the King seems somewhat entranced by Chary's beauty and cannot bring himself to strike her. Fluff for "he rolled a 1".

Immediate reaction when flanked. Star Orb (AC) attack on all flankers. On hit target is dazed to end King's next turn.
1d20+20=21 v Chary. Miss.
1d20+20=37 v Tutavak. Hits. 3d6+8=19 and dazed to end King's next turn
19 damage to Tutavak

Nodding gratefully at Chary, Whiteclaw rises and swings her hammer at the King. Her blow narrowly misses, but she marks the King and bares her teeth at him.

Strength of Stone (AC). On hit Whiteclaw gains 4 temp hp
1d20+15=29. Miss.

The King may find himself unable to strike Chary, but the devils have no such compunction. Blows from their ghostly hammers rain around her.

Ghostly hammer (Ref). All four devils target Chary.
1d20+15=30. D1 v Chary. Hits. 3d8+8=23
1d20+15=22. D2 v Chary. Miss.
1d20+15=19. D3 v Chary. Miss.
1d20+15=35. D4 v Chary. Crit. 32 damage
55 damage to Chary.

That will bloody her and trigger her Ardent power.

Yes, Chary os bloodied (20/85 HP: OUCH), but Whiteclaw and Tutavak get +4 damage until start OMNT (Ardent Eruption).

Chary staggers under the attacks, almost falling to her knees, but manages to keep her feet. She looks satisfied to have reached the King so potently, but only hopes she can stay up during the next round of combat until her turn comes around again. Those blasted devils hurt!!

"Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?" Arianwyn asks the King archly, "Hmm, well yes, you probably have."

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Almost forgot, it's been so long. Chary and Arianwyn, your bonus prizes for critting (you are the targets):
Until the end of the target’s next turn, the target gains a +2 power bonus to speed, a +2 power bonus to Reflex, and deals extra fire damage equal to your Wisdom modifier (3) each time he or she hits with an attack.

"Aye, for he has the best tunes," agrees the Moonlit King as blood courses down him.

That hits D3 and the King.

As blood-spattered leaves shower around the warlock, the King responds in kind.

Radiant light explodes from his orb. As the glow dies away, the battlefield has changed somewhat. The companions are forced back into a tighter group and the Ravager and D2 are both unaffected by the radiant outpouring, menaced by the Ravager and a devil transported by the King.

Ship of Night (Fort) when first bloodied. Close burst 2 radiant and King can move all creatures (including himself) within 5 squares.

The Ravager hurls itself at Arianwyn, driving huge fists into the warlock and narrowly missing him.

From within the nearest moonbeam, the King raises his orb once more and calls on the strange voices only he can hear to blast his enemies.

Lunar Blast (Fort; Close Blast 5). On hit target is pushed three squares. Miss - half damage, no push

With a triumphant and decidedly insane laugh, he plunges up the moonbeam staircase.

The Moonlit King is now on the first floor level on the moonbeam staircase.

Shielding Shades - reduce damage to 0.

Batlike shapes disperse the radiance of the King.

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Bathed in the Light. Heal 32 rather than take it. At 74 after second attack.

Tutavak laughs as the radiance surrounds him. "I am a child of the Sun Stallion and a Lord of Light. You will honor that!"

Are there any particular movement or attack rules I need to be aware of for fighting on spiral steps? Not asking secrets of these specific ones.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Stairs are normally difficult terrain, but these might be funky in some way.

Spiral stairs are just like any other stairs. Half speed to climb them. There are 4 steps. The King is fast and flying. An arcana check will help.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Thanks to Tutavak I also have Speed 8. :D

Arianwyn wrote:

So you do.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Arcana checks for the stairs and the floor - 25 and... 25. Spectacular rolling there.

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Unless Arianwyn yells something convincing, move and charge the King, preferably avoiding OAs. Please place me where that works (using reach weapon)!

1d20 + 18 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 18 + 1 = 341d10 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (9) + 7 + (3) = 19

Vision blurred by protective bats, Arianwyn sees little, but what he does identify is useful.

The floors above are made of magical smoke and will not bear any kind of weight. The stairs seem to be under the control of the King via his orb. It seems possible that he can remove them at will.

Urgent EDIT! - Tutavak may well regard this information as useful.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

EEK!

"Don't follow him!" Arianwyn yells, "'Tis nought but smoke and light; it will not bear our weight!"

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Okaayyyy. I'm trying to get this in for British sleep time! Minor: Focused Sight on King -- no penalties due to any kind of cover or concealment. Minor: Change weapons. Biting Volley vs Ref (twice). Crits on 18.

1d20 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 241d10 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 4 = 141d20 + 17 ⇒ (1) + 17 = 181d10 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 4 = 11

Seemed like a good idea at the time . . .

Tutavak changes to his bow, seemingly without thought while focusing on the King, then looses two arrows through the false floor.

Female Drow Ardent 13

"Many thanks to you Kia, that feels much better!"
and just as quickly, Chary is bloodied again (just) with the King's radiant blast (43/88 hp, 8/10 hs).

"Where has that blasted lunatic gone now, and how can we get up there?"

From the map, it seems that only the ground floor and the 4th floor are solid...is that correct? Can we see him through the moonbean floors?

"I saw some of you move the moonbeans around, can you do anything with those stairs or floor...like solidify them?"

Will post action in the morning after RevDM's response and update to what has happened up to now.

Fumbling with his weapons, Tutavak's arrows float serenely through the smoke, doing no harm to their intended target.

In which case, I didn't need the vision power. Given that, could you slip me to S10 for my third action, please? I don't think it affects anything else yet.

Done.

Female Drow Ardent 13

Not knowing what else to do, Chary draws her dagger and hurles it the fleeing King.

ranged basic: (1)+16=17 vs AC.

She is too distracted by the creatures closer to her, and her throw goes wildly away from her intended target.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

I MAY be able to teleport him back down. I can teleport him into thin air but he gets a save to negate the teleport entirely if I do so.(per errata on teleportation)

"Hold! He may yet come to rejoin us, should my powers prove puissant."

Chary's dagger flits back to her hand without hitting her target and the King blows a graceful kiss in her direction, shaking his head slightly.

"No, milady. They shut that road through the woods many years ago."

Whiteclaw snarls deep at the back of her throat and rises to her full height.

"I hate games," she says, serenely and heads purposefully for the stairs. Ignoring the danger, she climbs as far as she can and spins her axe. Thorny growths wrap around the King's legs and she pulls him closer. Keeping his attention, she swings again, ice particles trailing in the air behind her and holds him still.

OK. This is somewhat perilous, but seemed like the Whiteclaw-ish thing to do. She's moved 7 up the stairs and is 2 squares up. She used Thorn Strike (which is melee 2 and hit, for a miracle) to pull him one square down to within melee reach. She then used her AP to use Form of Winter's Herald. That missed, but it doesn't really matter as he still takes half damage and is immobilised to the end of her next turn. Oh - and she's marked him.
Thorn Strike (AC) - 1d20+15=33. 1d10+7+4=15 damage
Form of Winter's Herald (AC) - 1d20+15=27. Miss. 2d10+7+4=18 halved is 9.

If anyone's paragon path activates when another pc uses an AP, now is the time to say so :D

Muttering insane nonsense, two of the Moonlit Devils converge on Arianwyn while the others send bolts of blue doom hurtling towards the gnoll on the stairs.

D1 and D2 use Blue Bolt (Fort) on Whiteclaw.
1d20+16=19 - D1 misses.
1d20+16=26 - D2 hits. 2d10+8=23 cold and radiant
23 cold and radiant damage to Whiteclaw

D3 and D4 Ghost Hammer (Ref) v Arianwyn
1d20+15=26 - D3 misses (concealment and Tutavak's bonus). 1d20+15=35 - D4 crits. 32
32 untyped damage to Arianwyn.

Screaming defiance, the warlock blasts eldritch power at the encroaching foes and leaps to the far side of the chamber.

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Retrospective heal to finish her last turn [she has a move and a minor left] (sorry)

Kia move a little bit closer to Arianwyn and heal him.

Move to W13 (so she is within 2 squares each of where Chary and Arianwyn both were) and uses an inspiring word to heal Arianwyn for 1 surge plus 3d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 1, 5) + 8 = 15

Map updated and assuming Arianwyn is no longer bloodied.

Female Drow Ardent 13

sorry for the dalay, but I have a couple of questions: Have the stairs reappeared and if Chary is standing at the base of the (perhaps disappeared stairs), would a close blast 3 reach the King where he is standing now?

Sorry about that. I very stupidly put the stairs in the original map without remembering that I might well need to take them out again. They aren't there right now.

Yes, a blast 3 directed upwards would hit the King if you stood adjacent to where the stairs were.

Female Drow Ardent 13

okay this is convoluted so bear with me.

Chary decides she doesn't like the idea of the King getting away so easily. She turns away from the Ravager at her side (probably to her great detriment) and moves to the foot of the stairs. She then gestures to the King "Get back down here...no one gave you permission to leave this fight yet!"

move action: to T9 (or whatever square is best to reach him)
standard action: Passage of Swords
Daily Psionic, Weapon Close burst 3
Target: MoonKing (One enemy in the burst)
Attack: Charisma vs. Fortitude = (10)+18=28
Hit: The target is dazed (save ends).
Effect: You slide the target 5 squares. Each ally adjacent to the target during this slide can make a melee basic attack against it as a free action, with a power bonus to the damage roll equal to your Charisma modifier. (if I hit him, please move him in such a way to provoke AoO from Whiteclaw and Tutavak and leave him adjacent to me if possible.).
Minor action: Ardent surge on self (regain surge plus(1,4,6)=10

since I was bloodied again on my last turn, my ardent eruption occured again, so +4 to damage for Kia, Tutavak, and Whiteclaw (any allies within 5 of me at the time), until the SOMNT.
currently at 75/88HP, 7/10HS)

Woah. That's impressive :) My poor mad King.

Chary brushes past the Ravager and ignores the nasty blow he lands on her as she concentrates on bringing the King back down to earth.

OA from Ravager (AC).
1d20+17=31 - v Chary. Hits. 1d10+7=11 untyped plus 1d10=5 cold
16 damage to Chary

Dragging the King downwards, she forces him past Tutavak and Whiteclaw who both attack the clearly deranged monarch. Even prone, nothing can stop the gnoll now as her axe slams into the Moonlit King.

Whiteclaw basic melee with +5 to damage roll
1d20+13=33 - crit ... so, 22 damage plus 2d6=3 - 25 damage to the King. She also gets +2 Ref/Speed and +3 fire damage to end her next turn thanks to Tutavak.

Rising, Whiteclaw swings again, but this time her axe bounces off the King's plate armour.

Strength of Stone (AC). On hit Whiteclaw gains 4 temp hp.
1d20+15=26. Miss.

The devils move to take advantage of her bloodied state, seeking to slow and possibly dominate her.

D2 - Slave Fetch (bloodied target only) v Whiteclaw (Will). On hit target is slowed (se). First failed save, target is dominated (se or if the target takes damage)
1d20+15=31 - D2 v Whiteclaw. Hits. 3d8+8=18
18 damage to Whiteclaw

D4 resorts to simpler tactics and just hits her, while D1 and D3 attempt to destroy Tutavak. As the various blows land, it's clear that Whiteclaw is not in good shape, even though she'd never admit to such a thing.

Leaping Strike (Ref). Move speed and attack at any point.
1d20+15=26 - D4 v Whiteclaw. Hits. 3d10+8=23
1d20+15=30 - D1 v Tutavak. Hits. 3d10+8=29
1d20+15=16 - D3 v Tutavak. Miss.
23 damage to Whiteclaw
29 damage to Tutavak

Tutavak needs to make a basic attack as a free action with a +5 to the damage.

MAP

To answer the mechanical questions:
You can shoot through the smoke floors. No penalty from Ground Floor to First Floor, but a cumulative -2 therafter.
The top (4th) floor is solid as far as you can tell from this distance.
Four squares between floors.

Note that pcs with radiant powers (or are Lords of Light) can also move the moonbeams one square as a minor action. PCs with shadow powers can quench a moonbeam entirely with a successful shadow attack.

King's Madness Aura 4. Only works when he is in a moonbeam. Enemies entering or starting their turn in the aura cannot take standard actions

Arianwyn - used AP; concealment
Ravager - cursed; immobilised to end Arianwyn's next turn
Moonlit King - BLOODIED; marked by Whiteclaw; cursed; immobilised to end Whiteclaw's next turn; Tutavak's Quarry

Moonlit Devil 2 - cursed; -2 attack rolls to end Arianwyn's next turn
Moonlit Devil 3 - cursed

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Tutavak has his bow in hand, so I guess this is a punch.

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 341d4 + 4 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 5 + 3 = 14

Smack! 14 total, including 3 fire

Tutavak lands a vicious punch on the King as he passes and receives a serene smile in return.

"Each blow brings me closer to release - the soul doubtless is immortal when a soul can be discerned."
