Courts of the Shadow Fey (Rune Stones Part V - 4e)

Game Master Rev Rosey

Part 5 of the Rune Stones saga.
This uses part of Open Design's Courts of the Shadow Fey.
Players went from level 11 to level 13 with remarkably little combat.
We lost Reason and gained Chary in this one.

Init: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Moving in cleric time.

From the woods, the source of the eerie howling appears. Three husks of bone and hate phase through the trees, two of them clutching at Arianwyn and Tutavak, while the third unleashes an unearthly wail.

Shade Touch (Ref)
1d20+14=33 - S1 v Arianwyn. Hits. 2d8+7=16 necrotic damage.
1d20+16=23 - S2 v Tutavak. Hits (haunts are not fey). 2d8+7=16 necrotic damage
16 necro to Arianwyn
16 necro to Tutavak

Howl of the Damned (Will). Range 10
1d20+16=25 - S3 v Tutavak. Hits. 2d8+9=22 psychic damage
22 psychic damage to Tutavak

One Marauder circles and tries to drive the warlock up the hill, but Arianwyn's defenses are simply too good.

Spear (AC). Reach 2. On hit, target is pushed two squares.
1d20+15=18 - M3 v Arianwyn. Miss.

The remaining marauders bide their time and from the thick foliage, a fanged shadow beast flits into view.

Damage totals this turn:
16 to Arianwyn
38 to Tutavak.

"Ach, this is rank stupidity on your part."

Minor - Curse S1. (Just noticed something odd - I have Well of Death on my iplay4e profile, and I didn't pick that. If you have to play me, then ignore that. I can't remember what I actually picked). Shift to Ll3 (damage taken). Otherwind Stride vs M3 and S1.'s Fort.

1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 261d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 231d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

On a hit, they are immobilised. If hit, S1 takes an extra:

2d8 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4

I teleport to Ll12 as an effect.

Arianwyn disappears in a hail of leaves that sting the eys of his opponents.

Berating the stupidity of the shadows, Arianwyn glues one the spot by sheer force of personality and vanishes into the trees. The marauder is less impressed.

Suntide rears in sympathy to Tutavak's wounds, and as he comes down Tutavak has changed weapons to his spear, and immediately the long point slashes at one of the haunts.

Oh, and mark S2 for good measure.

Eager to prove himself in the company of the Chosen, Tutavak's first attack confirms his reputation as a warrior of note.

Hearing the rest of the group approaching, the shadow haunts continue to harry those they can see. S1 and S2 claw fruitlessly at Tutavak and S2 shifts away into the trees. S3 drifts into the woods and hunts for Arianwyn the deranged howling glancing off the warlock harmlessly.

I'm assuming we new arrivals come in at the bottom of the map.

Whiteclaw races into the area, coming to the aid of her allies, her axe flashing at one of the Shadow Haunts.

Moving to KK6. I'm assuming a path of: MM8, LL7, KK6, but if that doesn't work, move me as needed Rosey. Grasping Winds, targeting AC, vs S1. 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28, on hit: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 cold damage. And, I pull all each enemy within 3 squares of me two squares. Since I'm betting I hit, that brings S2 to II7 (and removes his cover), and M3 to LL 4 and 5, MM 4 and 5. Mark all adjacent targets.

Meanwhile... Kia is taking her time securing her mount, making sure it is comfortable... has enough to eat... doesn't feel unloved...

I've slightly rearranged your position Whiteclaw, as Tutavak and Suntide take up a lot of space. I've also added as square underneath him to make it a bit easier to see where he is.

Whiteclaw hurls herself gleefully into battle in charcteristic style, blasting past Tutavak and dragging the shadow creatures towards her.

The marauders respond variously. Three of them remain on the hill, but the giant marked by Whiteclaw swats viciously at her with his spear, and M2 crashes through the undergrowth in search of Arianwyn.

Whiteclaw's marauder makes a thorough hash of his attack, but the M2 does much better, ejecting the warlock from the trees and pushing him towards the pit in the ground.

Spear (AC). On hit target is pushed two squares.

Because I messed up the Init order is why. I will move him to his new position in the order. I confused myself with half the party arriving one round later than the first two.

Ixu loops in over the treetops, frost pouring from the baby dragon's mouth.

Move to LL9. Breath Weapon vs S1, S2, M3, and Whiteclaw, targets reflex. S1: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19, S2: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29, M3: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30, Whiteclaw: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19. On hit: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 cold damage.

You're in this init round - so after Kia and Tutavak have wrought havoc, Reason can arrive and incinerate things.

Ah - my apologies. You arrive at the extremely crowded southern end of the map. There was a handy yellow blob indicating your starting area, but it got somewhat messy, so I removed it. Technically, you are following the road, but if you want to plough through the woods, you're welcome to do that too.

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Kia finally appears, bow in hand, at Mm8 and asks Tutavak to clobber M3 while she takes in the situation.

"If you could see to that thing next to you Tutavak, it would be useful."

Commander's Strike at M3 through Tutavak. 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (13) + 15 = 281d10 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

Tutavak finds his arm moving of its own volition as he experiences at first hand Kia's extremely forceful personality. His spear manages to bypass the surprisingly difficult shadow armour.

We're not concentrating fire very well, folks.

Tutavak backs up Suntide a few feet, the better to invoke the Sun Stallion's blessing -- and wrath -- through his spear.

Move: Shift south 1sq (sorry, Rev). Minor: Mounted Coordination for +2 damage on next attack. Standard: Soul Flare, burst 1 enemies, attacking S1, S2, and M3 Ref. Quarry dice if I hit S2. 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 191d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 271d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 262d10 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 132d6 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8

Oh, yes, +3 fire from last turn's crit on each. I'll take the +2 against S2. Looks like I probably hit S2 for 16 fire and 10 untyped and M3 for 16 fire. As an effect, I grant Whiteclaw the Soulfire bonuses: +2 Speed and Ref and +3 fire damage through her next turn.

HP: 49/87 Surge: 9/9

Special: Quarry on S2. +2 Reflex TEOMNT.

Ok, on rereading, I mixed up a couple of things. Tutavak is now at 48 and Suntide at 98 due to Shadow Fingers.
The Mounted Coordination is bonus damage on the attack, not just one target, but it's part of the attack damage.
So it should have been (assuming I hit what I thought) 26 vs S2 and 18 vs M3, plus Whiteclaw's bonuses.

Got that. You hit S2 and M3, so S2 takes 13 (insubstantial) and M3 takes 18.

Finally snapping out of his reverie, Reason cautiously dismounts and scurries forward to join his friends.

Dismount, move to Mm4. If dismount is not an action, secure Horse.

Reason arrives on the scene in time to witness the Demi Shadow Haunt emerge from the woods. Vaguely wolf-like, it is clearly not undead, but seems rather, to be made of the stuff of shadow and to have taken this form merely for convenience. There mere sight of the beast inspires fear. Great jaws drop open and it moves towards Arianwyn.

Minor. Miasma of Fear. Close Burst 1. No roll. Ceatures within the zone gain vulnerable 5 psychic to end Demi-Haunt's next turn; creatures already vulnerable are pushed their movement on the haunt's turn.

The demi-haunt plunges through the trees and bites at Arianwyn, jaws clamping hard around his body.

Bite (AC). On hit target takes 5 ongoing psychic damage (se). First failed save: target takes a move action away from the demi-haunt (se). Second failed save: target falls unconscious (se)
1d20+13=31. Hits. 1d12+6=9
9 damage to Arianwyn and 5 ongoing psychic (se) and see effects above.

As the attack lands, the creature glows, exuding a miasma of fear.

Minor. Miasma of Fear (close burst 1). No roll. Targets gain vulnerable 5 psychic to end demi-haunt's next turn.

The fall of their fellow gives the remaining shadow haunts pause. S1 phases through the trees, away from Whiteclaw.

S1 shift and move

S3 howls again, targeting the beleagured warlock.

Howl of the Damned (Will)
1d20+12=19. S3 v Arianwyn. Miss.

Aware that he may be in some danger, Arianwyn teleports gracefully clear and fires a parting shot at the demi-haunt. It hits soundly, giving back a fair amount of the damage dealt to him.

Spiteful Glamor (Will)
1d20+9=24. Arianwyn v Demi-haunt. Hits.
1d12+9=21 (jammy so and so) plus
2d8=9 curse damage for a total of 30 damage.

1d20=17. Save v ongoing psychic

Female Gnoll Warden 12 (Icewrought Sentinel)

Seeing how the enemies seem to glide away from her, Whiteclaw calls upon the land. Ice forms over her armor, the ground turning frozen as she walks.

Minor: Form of Winter's Herald. Gives me +1 AC and CR 5 - the latter useless as it is overwritten by her CR 10 from her PP. However, the other effect could be key - it turns all squares within 2 of her into difficult terrain for enemies only, which should stop the shifting of the Haunts.

Following the Haunt, the gnoll keeps the pressure on her chosen foe.

Move to CC3, mark S1, Strength of Stone. 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34, on hit: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 cold damage and I gain 4 temp hp.

Female Gnoll Warden 12 (Icewrought Sentinel)

Crit! More damage. First I missed some of my own modifiers *blush*. I get 4 bonus cold from the axe for being bloodied, I get 2 bonus from being bloodied for being a gnoll and I get 2d10 for the crit. So, all told: 2d10 + 6 ⇒ (8, 5) + 6 = 19 extra cold damage.

What is it with you lot and crits :D Since you hit paragon you've rolled more than you've managed in the last two adventures.

Whiteclaw plunges into the trees after the shadow haunt and allows her connection with the cold of winter to flow through her axe. As the ground chills around her, she sees to her satisfaction that the haunt is bloodied.

Taking their cue from the haunts, the fey giants start to regroup towards the centre of the road.

M3 shifted and moved.
