Story (The Key to Freedom):
Devana's hair was completely messed up and she smelled quite pungent. Her dress was slightly torn in several places. Nevertheless, she felt lucky and freed as never before in her life. She was in her little chamber in the Infernal Academy of Magic in Egorian and cramped all kinds of personal stuff into a little backpack.

The door opened and Ilena, on of her 'friends' within a circle of for female mages, which had formed during their time of study, entered and stared at Devana in estrangement. "Devana, what are you doing? Whatever do you look like?"

Devana smarked. She knew exactly that her behavior didn't fit into the image which her friends had of her. Snow Queen was her nick name. Calculating, cool, unapproachable, intelligent and radiantly beautiful. "I am packing... I am not working at the academy anymore. Shall another concern with theoretical battle magic and be at the beck and call of the..." She halted abruptly. To continue know and speak out loud what she thought about the devils would only cause additional hassle.

Ilena shut the door hastily and stepped closer to Devana, wrinkling her nose while she stepped the completely atypical mess. "By Nethys, Devana, you just cannot! You worked you entire life for you position", she said imploringly. She seemed to be honestly concerned. That honoured her, the other two of their little circle would propably have reacted with an intelligent, pointy remark and Devana knew she wasn't any different than them. Ilena coninued while Devana halted packing and looked straight at her friend. "What happened to you? Is it because of Galial?"

Ilena deserved an honest answer, even though it could be costly if she chatted. "Not actually. It started with it... That Jiril pinched him from me..." she sighed and put ran her hand over her forehead. It wasn't so easy to wipe away all the night with the wonderful, cultivated, experienced elf Galial. "She may have him if she wants to. It's all right. Don't be concerned about my looks either - I was just having fun, as much as I didn't for a long time. I wasn't at home last night."

"But?" probed the cute woman, who had to suffer a lot of mockery because she wasn't quite as tall and lean as Cheliaxan ideal demanded. 'She's simply way too good for this place.' thought Devana and said: "I was in the foreign quarter, in a nice little tavern. Beer isn't that bad after all, especially if it's cool. I did some chatting, I did some dancing... and, well. A big bad wolf came and eat me. Erm, that is, a changeling."

"You were raped?!" Ilena cryed out in horror.

"Shhh... not so loud. No, of course not. I wanted it. And this night was the most honest and most liberating I ever had... you know, all those walls of black marble. The dictate of the devils. The thousands of little compromises, which we accept to arrange with the devils. The arrogant games we play - well, less you than more Jiril, Nasta and I. You've always been the best of us. I just can't play along any more and hide behind ridiculous little intrigues. I am moving to the foreign quarter, quit my position here in the academy, live by contracts." She slowly fell back into her usual, cool tone but sat down to have a closer look at her friend. Probably the only true friend, even though she had never realized it. "If you ever want to get out here for a while - we can share a little apartment."

"You're serious, aren't you?"

Devana nodded.

"And you seriously want to tell me that you're not the snow queen any more, just like that, at a moment's notice?" Ilena appeared to be troubled.

"No, I will always be that. I will never sparkle with passion, I will always be vain and always be calculating. That's nothing to be proud of, but that's simply what I am. But I won't be locked into a cage anymore. No 'theoretical' combat mage. I don't want to join the army and I'd never come a long way in academy without. I don't even want to. I want to live magic, out there, and if I go down, it's gonna be with waving flags. But not fade in this dark world."

Devana finished packing and a little key she couldn't remember fell into her hand. She had no idea how it got into the back of the little drawer in her desk. It felt strange and somehow she had the feeling it had a meaning. 'I did decide to change my life and find the key to something... that's got to have a meaning. I am curious what it may unlock.' She put a little cord around it it slipped it around her neck, so it would stay carefully hidden between her breasts.

"I... I don't know what to say. You're brave. But a little crazy as well. Don't you think you're in high emotional distress in which shouldn't make drastic decisions?"

"I have never felt any better making a decision before." She hugged Ilena and kissed her cheek lightly, knowing full well that she still smelled quite intensely like wolf. "Remember that you always have a friend if you need me. I'd be happy to see you show up in the foreign quarter some time... I am fond of you, Little Black. I'll let you know where I live."

"You're sure you're still the Snow Queen?" stammered the completely flabbergasted Ilena.

Devana winked at her and walked upright and with proud steps out of the academy for the last time in her life.

I have not determined yet to which region the book of letters actually applies. If I may I'd simply use our starting region...

Hm... I think I'll add a last name: Ravendawn
The name's therefore Devana Ravendawn.

Here we go, took a little bit of time but its done.... I hope

Background Lite:
Please find a better background in the profile area. At least the most recent, life changing event in his life. The lite version is here though.

Balic is part of a clan of Bear Warriors, dwarf berserkers that seem to manifest bear like qualities. Raised by his grandfather the Clan Cheif, he finds himself on a patrol when they get ambushed. With the ambush are two hill giants, one his grand father almost mauls to death before the other seems to beat him off with a literal "stick". Driving Balic into his own rage, he finishes off the first before facing the second. Going into a blind rage, he awakes to find the creature dead at his own hands, himself badly hurt and his grandfather dying. Upon his deathbed, Balic is giving the key only being told that its his turn to carry it.

If needed his childhood, is that of training and apprenticing as a weapon and armour smith. But other then that nothing note worthy.

Shush the Halfling Rogue

Shush hails from Egorian. His actual name is Drais Rakerrusk. His slave name was Bit. He now claims a home outside of Almas in Andoran, preferring the quiet countryside to living in a city.

Shush was born to Halfling parents in Egorian, living on the streets until caught stealing at a young age. He was then sent into slavery, owned by a middle-rank autocrat and his wife. He served them until the age of 22, at which point he quickly tired of that life.

Always curious and never satisfied, he began to realize the benefits of living under the foot of a slavemaster did not outweigh freedom. He engineered his escape and his masters’ demise, fleeing Cheliax and ending up in Almas. He took with him only a few objects, a small pile of gold, and the clothes on his back. He currently works for an Andoran bureaucrat, having good working knowledge of government administration. On the side, he makes money gambling and doing odd jobs.

One object of note he took from his former master was a silver key. His master always wore this key around his neck, even when he slept. On the day of his independence, Shush took this key and tried every lock, every door, every chest, every secret nook and cranny in the home; he even snuck into the man’s office. He found no home for the key. Shush now wears this key around his neck as a symbol of his freedom.

Shush is a utility rogue that will fight when he needs to and stab an enemy in the back when he wants to.

Hm. Well, there are some messed up sentences in my background. I will repost a corrected version later.

Would you like the Hero Lab (as far as available) files of all applicants asap or only of those you eventually accept once the choice has been made? (I am not at the computer at which have it right now, but I can put it in some cloud space and send you a link as soon as I am home.)

Bran Grindle hails from Absalom.

Bran Grindle is a bit crazy.

He currently has no home, as he wanders around the cities, towns, and villages in between wandering the countryside of Varisia.

Bran witnessed the murder of his parents, wealthy aristocrats, by a common thief. He was young, only 15.

Due to the brutality of the murder he witnessed, his mind is a bit addled. The brutality was made worse by Bran's actions- when he witnessed the murder of his parents, he went into a rage and literally tore the attacker limb from limb.

It was a very grisly scene when the authorities arrived to see a young boy amid 3 bodies. Bran was to be taken in by another wealthy family, but he fled, wanting to get as far away from the city as possible.

He went north into the wilds of Varisia, suppressing his rage. One afternoon, however, it all boiled over- he was sitting at the edge of a small stream when two goblins crept up on him.

Too bad for them. He savaged both of them, tearing one open so much the contents of its stomach flopped out- among them a silver key.

Bran has since kept this key in his pocket. His rage subsided, he often fingers the key to help calm him down in intense situations.

I have never played in play by post and would be grateful to be accepted.

I would prefer files from those accepted. after selections made.

also that is not a neccessity, if you don't use Hero Lab that is fine.

I will start going through the applications today in more detail. If I have comments or questions I will PM you. If the question could be of benfit to multiple people I will post it here.

I sometimes get nit-picky on crunch. I apologize in advance for this. It stems from so many years of gaming with idividuals that actually though D&D was a game that you can "win" but beating the DM. so they would look for any loop hole possible to exploit.

I have fixed some bad and outright wrong formulations in the background. The stats now include a detailed breakdown of inventory and skills. The "wizard's kit" from the inventory has been replaced by its individual components, minus the iron pot (I won't be carrying a pot around) and the torches (I can cast light any time I want to anyway).

I consequently use the term "Chelaxian" as adjective to "Cheliax" now - as opposed to "Cheliaxan".

I will post info tomorrow, but Bran is a Human Barbarian. He will definitely not be waiting in the back to see what others are doing unless a wiser party member advises him to do so.

Sovereign Court

I find Hero Lab does an excellent job of keeping the "crunch" straight and fair, especially for the GM.

As to the part of Daniel's background how he got the key:

Spoiler:

Cue the "rescued" trait being a good part for the key.
After escaping hell, Daniel ended up in a town where he was tracked down.
He was ambushed and would have gotten killed, if not for the intervention of a strange hooded woman. She seemed to know about his situation, but with no ill intention. With several more hitmen on the way, they took to the roofs to outrun them by jumping over the town wall and trees.
To do so, she taught him several tricks in moving acrobaticcally.

When outside of town, she handed him a silver key with the words; "This key could lead to your salvation"..

There is a single one item I forgot to mention in the inventory list which is definitely there. I don't want to repost everything because of this however, it's gonna be there should I create an alias for the character...

This is Kenji from earlier in the thread presenting Abedezar Mavashti, Tiefling Warpriest of Varisian heritage who worships Irez, Empyreal Lord of gamblers and Harrowers, among others. All the information in this post is also in my profile. I use HeroLab and will send you the portfolio at your request. Also, I assumed that I'd be allowed to take Varisian instead of one of the normal tiefling bonus languages since we're in Golarion.

An aside:

While building this character I found out that ranged warpriests are very MAD. Dex to hit, Str for Damage, Con for HP, Wis for spells and some class features, Cha for other class features, and Int because they're a 2+Int skills class. Dumping any stat hurts a lot, and being mediocre at all the stats makes a weak character. I would recommend only building a melee warpriest at low point buy, since you can have crappy dex to shore up your Con, Cha, and Int.

Appearance:

Unlike most tieflings, Abedezar looks almost completely human. Only a few of his features give away his fiendish heritage: he has a long, prehensile tail; bright green eyes with cat-like slitted pupils, and slightly pointed ears. He is tall and lithe and dresses in the same loose, complex-patterned garb of the Varisians he grew up with. He is rarely without his wide-brimmed hat, dark red (nearly black) scarf, and gold-embroidered red cape. He carries only a kukri and some darts for weaponry, and wears no visible armor, though the careful observer can occasionally hear the clink of chain as he moves.

This plus a tail, green eyes, and slightly pointed ears is generally how Abedezar should look.

Personality:

Abedezar Mavashti is mercurial but purposeful, and always ready with a gibe. He is primarily self interested but quick to help others if he can see a way to use it to his benefit. However, he generally doesn't do things to harm others because he sees it as counterproductive, or a waste of time in most cases. Abedezar is simultaneously a gambler, ready to throw his fate to the winds, and a fortune teller, prying into the secrets of the future. He takes calculated risks constantly, and it has served him well.

Abedezar has a passion for pleasure and fun. He never lets a day pass without gambling, playing darts or a board game, drinking liquor, or engaging in carnal activities. He becomes very moody and nearly despondent without his daily dose of joy.

The tiefling's connection to his god is a somewhat strange one. He's half reverent and half indifferent to Irez, but for one who has the blood of deity-hating asuras coursing through him, it's amazing he has respect for any god. Abedezar's never disrespectful to deities or priests, but he's rather wary of them.

Background:

Abedezar is the son of Zelazanna Mavashti, a Varisian prostitute from Magnimar, and an unknown man. At birth, Abedezar looked like a normal human child: no tail, normal eyes, normal ears. Around 7 years old his fiendish taint began to manifest, and his mother threw him out on the street. Abedezar eventually fell in with a group of street children, where he made himself useful with his natural talent for gaining information and telling lies. Eventually he gained some negative attention from the Scarni by running a smalltime gambling operation on their turf in the Underbridge district. He talked his way out of it, and impressed the gangsters, who invited him to join their own operation.

His reputation began to grow as a gambler, and over the decades, Abedezar won the equivalent of a few small fortunes. Sadly this money was owned by the Sczarni, and the gambler himself got very little of it. As all of his friends began to grow old, Abedezar's tiefling blood kept him young. Zelazanna, now on her death-bed while Abedezar persisted in the prime of youth, tried to reconcile with her long estranged son. In her last week of life, she gave her son the family Kapenia and Harrow Deck and taught him the rudiments of Harrowing. Abedezar was still too angry with his mother to fully accept her apology, but it still gave her some peace as she died.

Over the next years, Abedezar continued to gamble, drink, and chase women, but he slowly became a noted Harrower as well, even though it is usually viewed as a thing of women. His talent at both Harrow and gambling eventually led him into contact with the Empyreal cult of Irez, a rather popular Empyreal Lord among Harrowers. Although his asura blood gave him a natural hesitance toward all things divine, Abedezar came to respect the Lady of Inscribed Wonder, eventually becoming a strange kind of priest within her Cult.

A decade ago, a Harrow reading Abedezar performed for himself lead him to an odd, mysterious man from a land far from Varisia. The man would only call himself 'Stranger' and offered Abedezar a bet that he almost immediately refused, a silver key against the tiefling's heirloom Harrow Deck. Against his better judgement, and almost against his will, Abedezar accepted the bet, and beat the man at cards, winning the silver key. When he asked what the key was for, the man was nowhere to be seen, and Abedezar hasn't seen him since, though he's kept the key for just over 10 years.

Today, Abedezar still makes his living by gambling for the Sczarni and performing Harrow readings.

I'm going to pull out right before selection. This character was selected to join another campaign. Good luck everyone.

Happy to share Fingers' .por file whenever you need it.

Fratmancy's character here!

Being that I'm rocking a gambler, someone who studies conjuration didn't see fitting so I switched out to illusion. I hope you like gambling because this guy's gonna be betting and bringing the fun of Vegas to our adventure!

Feuerrabe here.

I created an alias and added some formatting, minor corrections.

Some very interesting contributions, I see. :) Makes one wish not only to be chosen, but hope for certain team mates.

Fratmancy here again, I should mention that I've experience with PBP's, having managed several and played as well.

I am closing recuitment (actually about 15 minutes after the time I stated before.

Rickard the ranger
Devana The Wizard
Abedezar the Warpriest
Sarosha The summoner
Fingers The obtainer of valuables
Balic The giant slaying Barbarian.

I am opening the discussion thread so you guys can check in, and then as you check in I can begin the individual introductions to the game.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Have a good game!

Silver Crusade

Woot!

Hey, I'm the noobie. I'll have a new martial character up soon, if you're still looking.

thanks Hispan...

take a look at the character creation info at the top of the thread.
.

OK looks like those that have shown an interest haven't sent me anything.

So to keep this game moving I am looking for a melee type character. level 1 see the opening post for the details.

the party is still introducing themselves to each other, so nothing has been missed yet.

feel free to check the gameplay.

SO recruitment is open... for 1 open seat.

bump for interest... I want to get this game moving again...

What's the current party makeup? It'll help me decide what to build.

Whack-a-Rogue wrote:

"Fingers" Mitchell - Male Human Rogue 1

Abedezar Mavashti - Male Asura-Spawn Tiefling Warpriest 1
Devana - Female Human (Chelaxian) Wizard (Evoker) 1
Rickard Raven - M Human Ranger/1
Sarosha – Female Fetchling Summoner 1

We lost our Barbarian.

My warpriest and the ranger are both ranged, so currently our melee consists of a rogue and an eidolon. Any full BAB melee character would work.

Good to know. I'll crunch something out after work. :-)

Here Is the crunch for Theod Songsteel. I will write up some fluff and post it later today.

Here. Is the finished fluff for Theod Songsteel. Thanks

Here's my submission

Brutalitar remembers almost nothing about his past save that the silver key around his neck is from his mother. "Keep hold of this, my son. It will unlock your destiny." He was still very young when she died and has grown up knowing nothing but life on the streets. While banditry keeps him alive, he dreams of something more....

looks like very little interest.

I was hoping for a first timer but hispanicatthedisco seems to have not provided any fluff, and I need to get this game going again.

Whack if still interested, you have any more detail for your back story?

There's not much to tell in terms of backstory; Brutalitar's just an orphaned street bandit with dreams of greatness. In terms of fairness, I should mention that hispanicatthedisco now has fluff under his profile.

I'm still interested i just provided my fluff up there.

Ok, becuase I wanted to ensure I have a seat for a first time PbP player I am going to take Hispanicatthedisco.

however, Once this thing get rolling again I will be looking for more frequent posting.

Theod...I will be posting a quick synopsis to get you where you need to be. and get this thing rolling again.

again sorry to everyone, I had lots going on and wanted to make sure we had our opening filled before moving to far ahead.

go ahead and post with your alias in the discussion thread.

I figured he should have first dibs, too. Have fun!

well looks like an opening has occured.

we have an opening for a skill monkey type.

creation rules in the opening post.

I hope to have a someone by the weekend.

level 1 still we just got started.

I am definitely interested. I can whip up a skill guy, although this might not happen for a day so if someone else comes in its all good.

thinking aasimar(angel blooded) rogue, skill guy as requested, with some archery support.

lets see what you com up with... I'm giving till the weekend.

Shulgo the Rogue is ready.

The only thing I am seeing and it isn't really you personally but rather the gaming community I have seen lately.

what is it with all the damn Drow stuff.

part drow this all drow that, now you are a drow spawned tiefling?

gawd I wish Pathfinder never added drow.

It mostly seemed to fit with the demon spawn thing. I agree its overdone. I can just change it if it makes you cranky :)

its not the cranky part its more along the lines of once a dm allows drow as a race more than half of all applicants are drow. what is it about that race?

also the SR...alternate tiefling traits are rolled randomly or you can take the feat, which you did take the feat to get claws. not the SR

sorry if I am sounding like an ass, but in most of the games at the game club a go to I have to deal with all sorts of guys that think the game is all about beating the DM. I have to look over everything in detail, its something I wish I didn't have to do.

but there are key things I initially look for to make me want to look deeper.

1. Drow in your race or a heavily drow themed story/character
2. SR
3. multiple natural attacks

while many of these things are legal, it just makes me look that much more detailed.

Will try to throw something together here, should have something workable in the next hour or so.
