Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Damage: I'm sure the bite missed, but the taste of the last bite was really disgusting, so he really didn't have his heart in it
Damage rolls. (1d4+2=4, 1d4+2=6, 1d4=2)

Ffethpaar scores two more deep cuts with his steel-shod claws, one raking the neck and severing Fizzgig's artery. A fountain of blood sprays the wall as Fizzgig blinks, sways, drops his club, and falls to his knees. He mutters as he falls prone to the ground with a thump.

"I didn't mean to take the coin purse Mommy, I'm sorry."

Greep thinks, "Four on one is a bit much. But maybe I can get them to split up during the pursuit."

"Cursare" -greep-
With a word, Greep activates his wand and begins his movement. His plan is to move quickly at first, until he can determine how many will chase. He hopes the sentries are not stationed in depth and that he can get through their lines before they catch up to him. If the number is something he can handle, he will attempt an ambush, though the Broken Claw tribe seems too organized to allow that tactic to work. He replaces the first wand with another as he continues to move back towards the Market.

Hopefully, this will be a distraction Swift can use.

Greep moves quickly, aided by his arcane ability. The four goblins come into sight, but by the time they do, Greep is halfway to the New Market, blending in with the late-night crowd. The four goblins stay together, hands on swords and move up the road, slowly surveiling the area. They never got a good look at you, so they are just looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Greep, I'm not sure what you want to do at this juncture. The guards are not going to mount a serious pursuit, and the only goblin who got a good(?) look at you is still on the roof. If you want to keep their attention you will have to do something to catch it.

"Where's the great library?"

Mercutio is snoozing at the Silver Rose, he's not a nite owl :)

Renkar thinks a bit.

"Well Miss Kind, there is the Lady's Library in the Lady's Ward. I have researched many items there, it's one of the finest collections of written material in the Multiverse. It's a fun daytrip as well, long as you don't run afoul of the Harmonium or the Mercykillers. If you want, after we conclude our current business I can take you there."

Renkar frowns.

"I certainly hope not. I am worried about our friends Eir and Ffethpaar. The Hive can be a difficult place at night, but I feel they are sufficiently prepared for any situation. And how! I also hope that Swift and Greep haven't attracted too much attention from our goblin friends."

Ffethpaar shakes his head sadly. Killing was not what he came here for, being shut in and the smells made him quite angry.

"With a little bit of personal hygiene, your life could have been so different", he says to the departing Fizzgig. Then to Rab: "My apologies, but I've had a bad day. What was it you wanted to say to us?"

Without another glance at Fernaldo Eir turns to Norgins.

"Norgins, don't move.... Tell me everything you know about salt mining goblins and Pettigrue. Portals, numbers, locations, secrets. Spill, Norgins. Spill everything and you don't get booked."

I knew ol' Pettigrue back when we was gleaming pips fresh off our mams' teats and looking fer our first cony. The biters got to him, he found out how to get to their mine after all."

Norgins giggles a bit, drooling slightly from his rubbery lips.

"They dont tells me nuffin' cutters, honest. They jest tells me where to meets them and they tells me which muckety-mucks they wants me to palaver with 'bout their salt."

Norgins giggles a little more.

"I'm 'sposed to meets with them tomorrow at the Dungeon Crawl Tavern down by New Market. Right at first hour Before Peak, right before they goes ta bed."

Norgins finds this amusing to himself and he titters a bit more.

Greep's first priority is to be available if Swift needs him. His second is to intercept his allies when they arrive. His third is to locate the roof-top watcher and anyone else the goblins have on look-out now that he has caused a uproar.

So he will attempt to circle back towards the warehouse, this time keeping farther back. He will concentrate on keeping an eye out for watch-goblins, trying to assess their positions and level of alertness. With luck, they will not increase their security too much. He will choose a spot to hide where he can hopefully catch sight of his friends and where the goblins won't catch sight of him, knowing that this time he risks not hearing Swift's call.

Greep fades into the background as the four goblins move warily down the street. They stop after a block or two, chatter to each other softly too softly to hear and turn about. They head back to their side street.

Greep waits a bit and makes his way slowly back to the neighborhood of Crackskull Close. He keeps to the shadows, and the darkness 2 AM of After Antipeak assists him. A slight rain begins to patter down from the leaden sky, the brown drops further sheilding him from view.

The neighborhood looks much like it did. Wherever the guards are posted it is not evident. Greep cannot see where the roof sentry is, he must have a concealed vantage point. The rain has driven the remaining goblins into their subterranian homes, and the street is quiet. Greep finds a small corner where he can crouch unobserved and keep an eye out for Swift and assistance.

Greep, give me three sets of Stealth and Perception rolls for while you wait.

Eir intends to take him somewhere OTHER than their place of employment, but within short walking distance. She has Norgins charmed for 2 hours and wants to get him put away before then. She will rent a room at an inn if need be. She's going to tie him up and guard him.

We need some safe-houses. Just a rented room here and there.

Eir and Ffethpaar drag the two corpses out of the small courtyard and into the street. Fizzgig proves to be quite an issue, but you both finally manage to push him past the courtyard door. There is no one at present on the small side street that fronts Norgins' door, so your corpses are left in an ignominious heap next to some piles of ordeur and rubbish by the cracked courtyard wall.

Norgins has been standing giggling softly to himself while the two of you wrestled the corpses out of the courtyard. When Eir commands him to follow you out, he blinks, shakes his head and stares at you in horror.

"You .. killed Fernaldo and Fizzgig! You ... made a bleedin' brainsnatched puppet outta me! It's .....INCONCEIVABLE!"

That Greepster is a stealthy little Robbitsises.

Over the next hour now 3 AM Greep keeps a lonely vigil. His sharp eyes manage to spot guards on the roof and in one abandoned looking building. Also, a squad of five goblins sweep the neighborhood, but Greep's stealthy ways keep him hidden from view. No one emerges from or enters into the warehouse.

OK there is a stopping point here, as help could possibly reach you at this point. I am going to have to keep it paused here for El Greepo until the others have either deceiphered his message or moved beyond the time frame. It's about an hour either way to the inn, so they could be arriving to your area at 3 AM if that is what they decide.

Ffethpaar knows that Argus Wattle likes to drink at the Bottle & Jug tavern in the Hive. He is a little unsure of its location, but a K(Sigil) DC 12 roll from either you or Eir will reveal its' location.

Edit ... we gotta stop posting simulataneously. LOL

Ffethpaar senses that Rab Norgins is in a state of shock. He has come to his senses, and what those senses tell him isn't good. He will most likely be docile for the time being.

Even telling someone to drop their weapons may break the spell. Eir will assume it is broken.

Eir looks for a place to put him away. Heading in the direction of home base.

Ffethpaar was not really expecting to end up in Sigil, so has no knowledge(sigil) skills

"Mr Norgins, do you know wherabouts of the Bottle & Jug? It seems that a man of your capacity would have such knowledge."

Don't worry about the roll. We're not under pressure, she can take 20 on it and remember where she's going in about 2 minutes. If she sees a landmark that should be a +2 circumstance bonus.

Eir looks for a place to put him away. Heading in the direction of home base.

Norgins knows he is in a tough scrape, and he is no fool or hero. He unhooks his sword belt and lets the scabbarded short sword and dagger fall to the dirty cobbles of the courtyard.

"No worries." Beads of sweat spring forth on Norgins' lumpy forehead

"I'll go quiet-like, you gots nuffin' to fear 'bout ol' Rab."

Norgins has the look of a man who once had a good buzz going, but has suddenly become cold sober and hungover. His squinty eyes are now bloodshot, and his hands tremble slightly.

The three begin their walk out of the courtyard and towards the distant goal of the Copper Cauldron The first hour of After Antipeak is in full swing 1 AM. As you leave the side street, you both hear a rustling by the two dead bodies. Three young children in rags are efficiently stripping the two corpses of money, weapons and clothing. Another swarm floods in from the main street, running by you on the way into the courtyard you just vacated. Norgins winces, but keeps his mouth shut. It is uncanny how the street urchins knew there was pickings to be had.

The three enter the main thouroughfare of Whisper Way, passing some of the same establishments they had passed on their way to Norgins' kip. There are plenty of flophouses on the way, and squats as well. While walking Eir remembers the location of the Bottle and Jug was near the Hive Night Market, a favorite place for stolen goods to be sold. If the party continues up Whisper Way and turns on Two Lamp Lane they should reach it with little trouble.

Norgins keeps his bonebox shut, which is a relief, since his decayed teeth and halitosis are truly bad. He morosely chews on some cloves to mask the smell and deaden the pain.

There are plenty of whore cribs, flophouses and empty burnt-out squats to choose from to stash Norgins. Take your pick.

Eir will pick up his weapons and carry them. She'll pick a place with enough class that it would be believable for her to use it, and close enough to home base that others can come to supply her while she guards Norgins.

Ffeth can move the intel, or if he wants can watch Norgins instead. But for the purpose of cover, a man and woman having a room together is a little more believable.

If you head back the way you came, the Sandstone District is one of the best 'Don't ask don't tell' type of neighborhoods: Quiet, semi-seedy yet not totally ghetto and straddling the border of the Clerk's Ward and the Hive. There are plenty of places to run to ground there if you care to go. This will not bring you towards the Night Market and the Bottle & Jug, but I sense you are not going to go look up ol' Argus anyway.

Male Lizardfolk Lizardfolk/2, Cleric/1

I assume that you find a place to stay and install Eir and Rab in a room. Then Ffethpaar will return to the Silver Rose to report on his findings

I missed the stuff about Argus last time I read. Should we go there, Thrug?

If it doesn't matter then by all means Patrick just make it up and move it along. To whomever receives guests in the dive they find she will make like she's gonna engage in some friendly bondage with Norgins.

commencing handwaving sequence:

The three make their way towards the Sandstone District, straddling the line between the Clerk's Ward and the Hive Ward. The After Antipeak streets are filled with jinkskirts, jinkshirts, cony-catchers, footpads, knights of the post, bashers, bubbers and the occasional Bleaker or Xaosmen group on some business of their own. You even run across a harried-looking Hardhead patrol as you walk down Sandstone Row, but they ignore you and Norgins doesn't make a peep.

You enter the Sandstone District without any complications. The rain has started again, and it is now the second hour After Antipeak 2 AM. You find a quiet out-of-the-way inn that is still lit within called the Bone and Bobbin. It looks better than the dives you passed along Whisper Way, but still not quite Chirper's. The inn is built of the crumbly red rock that gives the Sandstone District its' name. Ffethpaar takes his leave of you at the doorway, heading back with the information to Copper Court.

Eir and Norgins enter the establishment. It has a small, mean common room with a ashy fire of bundled razorvine sticks in the hearth. Several tables are occupied, some by snoring patrons who bubbed till the bottle was dry. A few silent somber-dressed gentlemen hold court in a dim corner over a guttering candle, the mummur of their conversation indistinct.

A large round man with a horrible scar running down his cheek, twisting his upper lip stands behind the splintery bar. He takes a look at Eir and Norgins and asks:

"Yeh lookin' fer kip or bub cutters?"

Making his way back to the Silver Rose Club Rooms, Ffethparr wonders if the Copper Cauldron will still be open and have something better to eat than big smelly men.

Making his way back to the Silver Rose Club Rooms, Ffethparr wonders if the Copper Cauldron will still be open and have something better to eat than big smelly men.

Ffethpaar makes his way through the Clerk's Ward after leaving his two companions at the Bone and Bobbin. The Sandstone District is relatively quiet, only the creak and jingle of a Dustmen corpse collection cart breaks the stillness. The rain patters down, softening the edges of the red-stone buildings.

Ffethpaar skirts the Civic Festhall Dsitrict, which edges the Sandstone District on the Clerk Ward side. Even from several blocks distance Ffethpaar can hear the drunken revelry continuing. The immense Civic Festhall building, soaring over 1,000 feet into Sigil's sooty sky, dominates the neighborhood like an emperor's palace. Passed-out Sensates start to appear in corners and on stoops, oblivious after too much sensory overload. Sneaky-looking fellows move silently among the snoring forms, rifling through their pockets as they doze in a drunken coma. Other forms wrestle in the darkened alleyways, but for pain or pleasure Ffethpaar really can't see.

After passing the rowdy Civic Festhall District, Ffethpaar arrives at the tidy streets of the Clerk's Ward. The clean streets and well-kept houses and businesses are all locked up tight, with nary a body in sight at this late hour. A patrol of Harmonium troops by. They stop Ffethpaar, check his story, note his brooch, and allow him to travel on his way.

Ffethpaar passes the Great Gymnasium, the large building quiet now except for a few late-night patrons. He tramps past the Great Bazaar, the immense market still full of patrons, even as it was during the day. The patrons and the business they conduct is the only thing that has changed since the lit hours. Ffethpaar passes close to Bedlar's stall-combo, but the merchandise is put away off the stall and his kip's door is shut tight.

As the third hour of After Antipeak approaches 3 AM Ffethpaar finally approaches the small street of Copper Court.

Gonna have to stop it there to see if anyone is left to meet you. Going to have to decide that on Karrin's & Zigel's watch.

Renkar smiles at Karrin, his face wreathed in pipe smoke.

"If that is what it will take to soothe your worries, I am sure we can make a journey there in the Before Peak hours."

Renkar yawns. It's currently the Antipeak hour .. 12 AM

"I am used to late-night vigils, but I think we should take shifts in the common room until the rest of our company arrives so that we can get a bit of rest. I have a room rented for just such an occasion as a long night on the third floor, the room with the red door. Bess' brother Herbert usually runs the After Antipeak shift, he'll bar the door, but he's aware that we are waiting on visitors. Miss. Kind, if you could take the first shift and wake Ser Za Elric at 3 hours After Antipeak? Ser Za Elric you can wake me if our people have not returned by the beginning of Before Peak. We'll have to mount an exploration at that point to find out what happened."

I am going to assume this plan is ok with you two.

The common room of the Copper Cauldron empties as the night progresses. Herbert, the brother of Bess, has taken over the bar, but most of his attention seems to be in doing prep work for the coming day's breakfast. The tradesmen have finished their short beers and retired, and the few sots have tottered off to their kips. Karrin is alone by the banked fire, watching idly as the glowing coals crack and pop.

Karrin hasn't seen Blacky at all this evening. Hopefully the little black cat hasn't run away. She has only been Karrin's since last week, but Karrin already feels a bond with her.

Karrin sits at the table, lightly dozing when a knock comes to the inn's door at just before the second hour of After Antipeak 1:45 AM. She starts awake as Herbert lumbers to the door. He squints out the peephole and lets a young tiefling teen into the common room. The young boy shakes himself and asks.

"Is there a Mr. Kratos here? I have a message for him from Mr. Greep."

Karrin glances over at the lad, "I'm his pupil," Karrin says without missing a beat, "and I take it you have the message I've been waiting all hours of the night for.

"That rotten little reptile had better have something important to say," Karrin pretends to mumble to herself, "Well give it here. Kratos, like all sensible creatures, is fast asleep and I have no intentions of waking him. Either give me the message or you can wait here till morning."

Eir smiles as suspiciously as she can.

If Norgins says anything she'll slap him. If he claims to be kidnapped she'll say, "he's really into roleplaying." Bluff: (1d20 9=14)

"I have a problem with filthy men."

Before Ffeth leaves she asks him to have the boss send a rested goon with some shackles to come watch this guy. Oh yeah, and at the desk she'll pay with her own money, I assume she'll be reimbursed.

The young Tiefling hems and haws a bit, but staying all night waiting to deliver a message was not on his agenda.

"I reckon it'd be OK. Here you go."

The courier passes Karrin a package with some salt and a pipe similar to Renkar's with a twist of paper stuffed inside the bowl. He stands back and looks expectantly at her.

Renkar said all expenses (within reason) would be covered.

A half-asleep sot blearily looks up from the bar's scarred surface and smiles drunkenly at Eir, or more likely, at the area just below her neck. Norgins keeps his mouth shut, still sweating even in the damp wet of a Cage night. The barkeep grunts and fishes under the bar emerging with a large key.

"We gots no running water here, cutter. We gots a bathroom at the end of the hall, but the water lady's gone to bed for the night. Before Peak yeh can catch a bath for three Stingers. The room's five Stingers a night, out by Peak if yeh ain't staying. Still interested?"

Eir looks Norgins over.

"Whatever."

She tosses the stingers on the desk.

The scarred barkeep hands Eir the key.

" Up the stairs, third door on the left. Enjoy."

He goes back to wiping the cheap crockery with a stained towel.

Eir tells Norgins to lay down on the bed. She'll pull up a chair and keep her weapon unsheathed across her lap.

The two ascend the creaking stairs to the second floor. The room they have been given is servicible and relatively clean. There is a half-filled pitcher of water on a vanity table, a chair pushed in beneath it. An old chamberpot, empty but redolent of past usage sits in a corner. A small window set with wavy glass looks out onto the alleyway beside the inn. A large bed with a straw-stuffed mattress completes the ensemble.

Norgins lies down on the bed as instructed, his eyes gleaming in fear. Eir pulls the chair away from the vanity with the water pitcher on it and sits watching him. The only sound is the rustling of mice in the walls and the creak of old timbers settling.

I imagine this is where Eir will sit until rescue comes. Norgins is going to be a good boy and hope that his skin remains in one piece.

"So Norgins, you knew Pettigrue pretty well, huh? That surprised me."

She checks out her nails.

"Crikey, I broke a nail fighting."

Looks around.

"Not much in the way of decor, but then I guess you can't be choosy when you book a room in the wee hours."

"You wanna play 'I spy'?"
