Ferrous Grimgond |

Ferrous feeling the battle fury takes a stab at the beetle as it is trying to squeeze through over its dead hive mate.
Attack1: 14 - 1d20 ⇒ 14 - (3) = 11
Ferrous will stand his ground here hoping to take advantage of the tight terrain to eliminate another threat.
init1: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
init2: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9
Attack2: 14 - 1d20 ⇒ 14 - (6) = 8

Attack4: 14 - 1d20 ⇒ 14 - (20) = -6
Damage4: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
If my hp drop below 15 I will use 15' of movement to retreat the next round instead of the posted attacks above. Also not sure how to use that natural 20 in the last attack I will wait for your post.

Round 5
Init: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3
Bite: 20 - 1d20 ⇒ 20 - (10) = 10
Ferrous and the beetle strike at one another but neither are able to connect.
Round 6
Init: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7
Bite: 20 - 1d20 ⇒ 20 - (17) = 3
Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8
Ferrous can hear what sounds like digging coming from behind the beetle he is fighting.
Once again Ferrous strikes at the Beetle but the blade glances off it's chitinous armor. The beetle lunges, and manages to bite Ferrous deep in the shoulder!
Ferrous: 8 damage. This brings you to 15 so I will assume you fall back now.
Round 7
Ferrous hurries backwards and is pursued by the beetle! But he is able to keep his shield between himself and the beetle, and he emerges back into the corridor with the others. Another beetle emerges in front of Wallia and snaps at him but with his new shield Wallia easily blocks the attack.
Init: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6
Bite: 20 - 1d20 ⇒ 20 - (14) = 6
1d8 ⇒ 8
1d7 ⇒ 1
1d6 ⇒ 1
Bite: 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (7) = 11
Wallia: you didn't specify but it stands to reason that you were preparing for the beetles, so you may make a free attack as if you had one readied.

Round 8 Initiative:
Block 1: Ana, Brathas, Ferrous, Fistep, Wallia, Zynazyr
Block 2: Beetles!
Everyone is up!
Ferrous: you are currently prone but can use a move to stand if you wish.
FYI: atacking a beetle in the tunnel mouth will have no penalty if you are dead ahead but will have hard 50% cover from attacks on the diagonal (a -3 to hit).

Wallia of Winterbourne Stoke |

Wallia slings at a beetle 17 - 1d20 - 1 ⇒ 17 - (18) - 1 = -2 if hits 1d4 ⇒ 3
and as he sees the beetles coming he moves back ten feet and slings again 17 - 1d20 - 1 ⇒ 17 - (3) - 1 = 13 if hits 1d4 ⇒ 1

Brathas |

Brathas moves up (he has 40' move, I believe) and tries to help out Wallia.
"More beetles here!"
He takes Ferrous's handaxe in both hands and swings at the beetle that has come out of the tunnel.
THAC0 16: 16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (17) = -1
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Anastoria |

"Ferrous! Move back! Draw them out!" Ana readies an attack against any beetle that she can reach.
THAC0 15: 15 - 1d20 ⇒ 15 - (14) = 1 Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

RocksAhead |

"Ferrous! Move back! Draw them out!" Ana readies an attack against any beetle that she can reach.
[dice=THAC0 15]15-1d20 [dice=Damage]1d10+5
confused by this post. You can make an attempt on the beetle but at -3 To hit. Ferrous can't move back as he is currently prone and standing takes his move.

![]() |

Ferrous can't move back as he is currently prone and standing takes his move.
Ferrous: if you wish you may stand and then move back instead of attacking.

Zynazyr |

"I'm no military strategist, but I don't think splitting up was a good idea. That's why I suggested the corner," Zynazyr says firmly as Brathas moves around the corner to help Wallia. Believing that the fighters can manage themselves, he moves into the corner where he wanted to be to begin with and readies a sleep spell to help protect the cleric and thief. "Let me know when you think they are all out," he tells the two.
Delaying casting the spell until at least 2 beetles are in the hallway or will wait for more if given info as such.

![]() |

Wallia stands ready with a sling as the first beetle emerges. His first stone hits, but his second goes wide.
Brathas comes around the corner and strikes the beetle with Ferrous' hand axe!
Which incidentally, Brathas, has the same stats as your hand axe and will do 1d8+2 damage if you wield it in both hands.
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Brathas crushes the head of the emerging beetle and it drops dead.
Ana skewers another beetle with her two-handed sword while Ferrous gets clear of the opening. Zynazyr moves to the corner and prepares a spell.
Fistep, you can step into the gap now, but you would have to actually enter the tunnel to hit the next beetle. If you wish you may ready an attack for when the next beetle comes out, and I'm assuming you are doing that until I hear otherwise.
Beetles begin to pour out of the holes.
A particularly large beetle (light blue) emerges and snaps at Brathas, and the thief narrowly steps aside. Another much smaller beetle scurries past and bites at Brathas, but his leather armor holds the mandibles at bay. A third beetle of medium size emerges from the southern hole and lunges towards Ferrous...
Fistep: Go ahead and make a readied attack. If the beetle survives, it will bite Ferrous.
Zynazyr casts his sleep spell...
And the two beetles to the north slump down to the floor!

Round 9 Initiative:
Block 1: Zynazyr
Block 2: Beetles!
Block 3: Ana, Brathas, Ferrous, Fistep, Wallia
Fistep can make his readied attack from last round (and the beetle will then attack Ferrous if it lives), and then Zynazyr is up!
If you attack a sleeping beetle you automatically hit. If you hit with a melee weapon you roll damage twice. Brathas will get to roll three times since it counts as a backstab.

![]() |

Fistep stabs the beetle through the head as it emerges, running it through.
That was a crit, but a regular hit was all that was needed. BTW, you don't have a thirst penalty. The party has a regular supply of water.
Round 9 Initiative:
Block 1: Zynazyr
Block 2: Beetles!
Block 3: Ana, Brathas, Ferrous, Fistep, Wallia
Zynazyr is up!

Zynazyr |

Seeing the fighters taking care of the beetles near them and not wanting to wake the ones he just put to sleep, Zynazyr prepares to send a bolt of energy at any beetle that comes out of the North tunnel.
Cantrip: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3

![]() |

When the next beetle emerges, Zynazyr fires a bolt of electricity at the beetle. It scorches the beetle, who emits a shrill sound like a boiling teakettle! It clambers over the sleeping beetle and snaps at Brathas, who is the most obvious target, but Brathas sidestps the attack.
Bite: 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (12) = 6
Another beetle emerges from the east exit and goes straight for Ferrous! But Ferrous takes the bite on his shield.
Bite: 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (10) = 8
A third beetle cannot quite make it out of the tunnel but tries to snap at Ana from behind the corner, but cannot seem to get a good angle.
Bite: 18 + 3 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 + 3 - (2) = 19
Wallia flings a sling bullet and strikes the beetle in the face! It rears back, even more angry!

Round 10 Initiative:
Block 1: Ana, Zynazyr
Block 2: Beetles!
Block 3: Brathas, Ferrous, Fistep, Wallia
Ana, Brathas, Ferrous, Fistep, and Zynazyr are up! Ana gets to act twice.
The big light blue beetle has been walked over by another beetle and is now awake, but did not get an action this round. Purple is still asleep.

Brathas |

Brathas is going to finish off Purple before another of the beetles wakes it up. Then he will move backwards at half speed (fighting withdrawal).
That automatically hits for triple damage, so
Damage: 3d8 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1) + 6 = 14

Anastoria |

Seeing that Fistep's attack was (probably) ineffective, Ana moves to attack <yellow> as well.
THAC0 15: 15 - 1d20 ⇒ 15 - (8) = 7 Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Ferrous Grimgond |

Can Ferrous move to 16:4 and ready an attack? If not he will fight the yellow one by him.
Ferrous lets out a scream of rage as he stabs forward with his borrowed short sword.
Attack: 16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (14) = 2
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Also am I rolling the correct damage or do I get a +1 from the sword?

Zynazyr |

I'm assuming Brathas killed the sleeping one, otherwise I will attack it instead.
Frustrated that one of the sleeping beetles was wakened but relieved at least one was killed, Zynazyr continues the attack with Wallia.
Cantrip(brown?): 1d6 ⇒ 5
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 1

![]() |

Fistep tries to get his sword into the eyes of the beast but the creature ducks and his blade glances off the beetle's shell.
Brathas easily kills the sleeping beetle and then falls back.
Ana tries to strike the beetle with her huge sword but the beetle moves too close for a clean strike and she misses.
Ana: don't forget that your sword is +1 and this your THAC0 should be 1 point better than with the battleaxe. Also you get a second attack, which I will bot shortly.
Can Ferrous move to 16:4 and ready an attack? ....
Also am I rolling the correct damage or do I get a +1 from the sword?
Ferrous: with a 20' move, no. That is 25 feet. And yes, damage is correct. It's 1d6+1 + 1/2 your STR, because it is a light weapon. If you want you can move now that the beetle in front of you is dead:
Ferrous stabs the nearest beetle in the eye, and it collapses.
Zynazyr tries to cast a cantrip, but his concentration fails.

The two beetles in the north hallway advance, coming up to attack Wallia. The first one manages to sink its teeth in Wallia's leg, Both beetles are blocked by Wallia's shield.
One of those rolls was a natural 19! But your AC is -1 right now, and they needed 20's. :)
BTW Wallia: you have used your sling more than once. You actually can't reload your sling with only one hand, and Ferrous' shield takes up your other hand. So no more sling attacks unless you want to drop the shield.
The one in the southern tunnel emerges and attacks at Ana, biting her in the thigh!
Ana: 5 damage.

Block 3: Ferrous
Ana, Brathas, Fistep, and Zynazyr are up! Brathas, Fistep, and Wallia get to act twice.

Brathas |

His 'Hide behind Wallia' plan a resounding success, Brathas moves up and helps out the cleric by striking the wounded (black) beetle with an axe.
THAC0 16: 16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (13) = 3
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
If that drops it, then he attacks Teal with the axe (if not, he attacks Black again).
THAC0 16: 16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (8) = 8
This time he misses, and once again falls back.

Anastoria |

Ana retaliates against the beetle that bit her!
THAC0 15: 14 - 1d20 ⇒ 14 - (19) = -5 Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Wallia of Winterbourne Stoke |

Wallia attacks with his mace 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (2) = 16 and whiffs
18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (19) = -1 if hits 1d6 ⇒ 6 he then takes a step back.
He says, "I am more of a sling person, but oh well."

Ferrous Grimgond |

Assuming you said I could move last round after swinging. In that case I could move another 20' this round and be in striking distance of the beetles up by Brathas and Wallia.
Ferrous seeing his last prey go down makes a break for the other tunnel branch move between the Cleric and Brathas he takes a position in front slashing out with his sword at the beetle in front of him.
Attack: 16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (19) = -3
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

![]() |

Brathas kills one beetle and then tries to strike the other beetle, but misses. He takes a step back.
I thought I hadn't equipped the shield. Just taken it, but it does not matter that much to me.
Okay, if that's the case, your AC would have been two and you would have been hit once, for...
2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 ... 4 damage.
Wallia drops his sling and strikes at the beetle. His first attack misses but the second strikes the beetle and cracks it's chitinous armor! He steps back to allow Ferrous in.
Ferrous finishes the beetle off with the magical shortsword, while Ana crushes the last beetle with her battlesword.
Combat Over.
Before you and in the tunnel are nine dead beetles. Ferrous thinks there were more than that in the nest last time when he scouted it, but without actually looking he can't be sure if there are more there now.
Do you want to:
* Head back in and clean out the nest?
* Take the beetle meat and call it a day? (i.e. return to camp for the night)
* Go somewhere else in the dungeon? (where?)
* Something else?

Anastoria |

Ana nods. "Yes, I could use a rest and some healing," she says, tying a strip of cloth around her leg wound.

It's what, about 5 pm? So the casters can take more time trying to identify items?
There is the clay flask and scroll from the fire room, the king's sword, the banner, a potion from the zombie room, the herald's amulet, and some more things I believe.
We also need to determine who wears the Ring of Sparks; it would Wallia another combat option.

Anastoria |

Wallia casts CLW on whomever needs it most. 1d6
Before bed, he also tries to decipher some of the clerical scrolls taken off the Zargonites.
Ana is at 6 of 15 hp. She wouldn't mind the cure, but she can just stay out of melee if necessary.

Ferrous Grimgond |

Ferrous refuses Wallia attempt to heal him. Save your spell for the elf. The dwarf shakes his head as he looks over his wounds. The price of this meat was almost a dwarf's life. But we should have enough to keep people fed for awhile. The dwarf nods his head in agreement when Brathas suggests the magic user take some time to try and identify the newly gained items. Then he makes his way towards his bedroll and lays down for some well deserved rest.
He also returns the buckler and sword to their owners and gets back his shield and axe.

Ana: Wallia's spell actually heals 1d6+1 so that puts you at 10.

Okay guys, I am going to do up the rolls for analyzing magic items. That will take a bit of time, as you have a lot of stuff now.
