Yarricki walks with Thunder to the kitchen and points to an empty corner
"Sorry buddy, you have to stay in that corner for the evening."
She then goes upstairs to check on the empty room at the front of the house
Take 20 on perception for 28

![]() |

Yarricki takes time to study the layout of the upstairs room at the front of the house. Because of the room’s position immediately above the main door, Yarricki realizes some slight modifications to the floor, would allow the assailing of would be adversaries as they entered the front door.

![]() |

Which rooms are still unexplored? However with his various Knowledges Mido is probably helpful in constructing a catapult...

![]() |

Yarricki goes down again and gathers everyone around here "This place can be made far more defendable than it currently is. However I am not sure if we should do that as it will also reflect on what we think of Amara's guest. What do you think?"

![]() |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Marduk wrinkles her eyes, trying to figure out what Yarricki means.
"Me not understand. Best defense iz axe. Me orc chief always sayz dis!"

![]() |

I think you've searched all the areas now...like Yarricki says you can make the house more defensible, totally up to you if you want to or not. If so let me know what you are specifically doing.
This scenario is different, in that there is this sandboxy first part, you are doing well. It will be time for tea soon, so make your decisions on what you want to do before that.

![]() |

Amara do you think it is best to be on the safe side and make the estate more defensible against Aspis Agents or will it look suspicious to our tea time friends?

![]() |

Amara considers Oroz's question. It would be good to have defenses set up, just in case. I think our friend will understand.

![]() |

So in defenses we have an unbuild catapult (where do we put it?) and a room over the front door that we can make murderholes in. Shall we put the whale oil there to pour it over any attackers?

![]() |

Yes assembling the catapult requires a successful DC 15 Disable Device, Knowledge (engineering), or Profession (siege engineer) check. Other may aid, this check.

![]() |

Yarricki will get the barrel of oil down again, making sure there is enough left in the lighthouse to light the fire there if they want to do that. She hauls the barrel to the room over the entrance and places two flasks of alchemist's fire next to the barrel. She instructs several of Amara's servants that in case of an assault on the entrance they should first pour the oil over any assailants at the front door, followed by the flasks.

Piece o cake... DD1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
Ah and old catapult... we had one of these in the monastery back in the day. Now where did Marduk go... assembling one of these requires brains and brawn...

![]() |

Good job, Mido :)
Marduk looks Mido putting the pieces of catapult together and then, when she sees the final structure, she lets a childish "Whooaa! Beautiful!"

![]() |

Yarricki leaving oil behind to light the lantern, drags the oil barrel into the house and sets it up. Talking to the servants, she realizes they seem very uncomfortable with her instructions.
What kind of murder holes would you like to make above the entryway?
Mido and Marduk begin assembling the catapult, and it's going well, when at a certain point Master Mido realizes some of the parts are missing to fully assemble it.
Craft (Carpentry), Know (Engineering), or Profession (siege engineer) to craft what you need from the household furniture.
In the great hall a long table has been laid out with fine dishes for the ceremony. Lovely smelling flowers have been laid out, transforming the once dank and dirty hall into an enchanting ambiance filled tea room. Amara seems to be pulling out all the stops.

![]() |

Are there several kinds?
"Say Master Mido, I guess we can open up the floorboards in that room above the entrance so that we can pour down oil and fire on any attackers. I don't have a clue how to do that, can you help us when you are ready with that catapult?"

![]() |

Craft (Carpentry): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Despite having never tried her hand at carpentry before, Miyako does a fine job creating some of the missing parts for the catapult.
"I like this! Maybe I'll pick it up as a hobby."

![]() |

Miyako does well at crafting the needed parts, and the catapult is successfully assembled.
Assuming Mido has some ideas on the entryway trap, that is successfully assembled as well.
The catapult requires 3 people to fire it. full round actions
You have some time still, would you like to practice firing the catapult?
Any other countermeasures you wish to implement?

![]() |

"Let's fire a practice shot with the catapult, who will help me?"

![]() |

"Marduk be not interested." states the woman.

![]() |

Operating the catapult requires 3 people working for 3 full round actions to load and fire it. To fire the catapult, the crew leader attempts a targeting check. This check uses the leader’s base attack bonus, and either her Knowledge (engineering) skill modifier or her Intelligence modifier (if she’s not trained in Knowledge (engineering).

![]() |

GIltman will gladly help load and fire the catapult. Someone with more understanding of the machine should probably be the main operator, though.

![]() |

"Master Mido, can you help us out once more? We have no clue how to operate this thing."

![]() |

Of course, young ones...
The Gnome patiently instructs his fellow Pathfinders in the intricacies of catapult use before firing a salvobut it appears the Gnome is a bit rusty himself.
BAB+Kn(Engineeering)1d20 + 2 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 6 = 13
Mido has profession instuctor... so he's in his element here... from a mechanicical perspective what sort of AC does a catapult target? Standard or touch AC? Also what's it's range icrement?

![]() |

Catapult's use the indirect attack rules, basically they use a target DC, since you are practicing it's DC 15.
Indirect Attack: To fire an indirect-fire ranged siege engine, the crew leader makes a targeting check against the DC of the siege engine. This check uses his base attack bonus, his Intelligence modifier (if not trained in Knowledge [engineering]) or Knowledge (engineering) skill modifier (if trained in that skill), any penalty for not being proficient in the siege engine, and the appropriate modifiers. If the check succeeds, the ammunition of the indirect attack hits the square the siege engine was aimed at, dealing the indicated damage or effect to any object or creature within the area of its attack. Creatures may get a saving throw to limit the effect of the attack; this is typically based on the type of ammunition used.
The range is 50-150 feet.

Amara Li vanishes for a few moments and returns changed into formal robes of azure and dove-gray silk.
Pathfinders our guest has arrived at the dock, it will take him a little while to make his way to the house. Please choose your place at the table. If you don't feel comfortable joining the tea ceremony, I understand, that is your choice, but you are all welcome at the table.
The guest of honor will be seated on the red x, seat yourselves as you like around the table.

![]() |

"What would happen if one of us would sit in the catapult when it's fired?" Miyako wonders out loud. For a moment it looks like Miyako will climb onto the catapult, but she appear to change her mind and walks off.
"It's tea time!" she declares cheerfully, and quickly takes place at the table.

![]() |

"HOT WATa time!" says Marduk, eager to see what will happen. She takes a seat beside Miyako.

![]() |

Yarricki brushes her armor once more, checks on Thunder and takes a seat away from either the hostess or the guest and close to the kitchen.

![]() |

As you are all seated around the table, through the large windows you can see that the fog has gripped the event, despite the fact that it is only early afternoon. One servant readies the tea service in the kitchen, as the other waits by the front door. Soon, you hear the muffled conversation from the entry hall.
Our master bids you welcome esteemed one, please join her in the Great Hall.
Moments later, the servant escorts an ancient samurai, he stands quite tall even in his later years and moves gracefully, he wears his armor lightly despite his age. As he enters, Amara Li stands and bids you too as well. Amara bows to the samurai.
Honarable Iko Tsuneo, I welcome you to your ancestral home, thank you for making this distinctive location possible as the site of our meeting.
She raises from her bow. The samurai speaks in a spry voice. Amara Li Hime, thank you for organizing this lovely occasion and blowing the dust from this old place, I still remember my hours spent in the garden and lighthouse here as a child with great fondness. He bows in return.
Amara speaks once again, Esteemed One, allow me to introduce my fellow Pathfinders joining us today, they represent the diversity and enthusiasm of our society.
She then introduces each of you, after each name the Samuari bows to the person introduced.
Master Mido, learned scholar, instructor, and follower of Irori
Yarricki, from the druidic order, taimer of wild beasts
Giltman Pennywhistle, Priest of Nivi Rhombodazzle
Miyako Okori, illumined of ancient mysteries and follower of Daikitsu
Marduk Zhro'hysh, fierce warrior from distant Garund
And finally, Oroz, the Face on Fire, virtuoso of arcana arts
After completing the introductions, Iko Tsuneo is made comfortable at his seat of honor, and the first course is served by the servants, delicate finally crafted small dishes are brought out with a thinly cut truffle garnished with tiny edible flowers.
Tsuneo enjoys his truffle, while beginning polite conversation around the table.
One of my proudest moment is the defense of the Temple of Shizuru, in Northern Shokuro from a hobgoblin incursion, we were few, they were many yet we preserved.
What are your proudest moments as Pathfinders?

![]() |

Mido wearing a simple yet well crafted Kimono as would be befitting of a follower of Irori. Holds a deep bow until the Samurai is seated and he can likewise take his seat.
Undoubtebdly... Mido begins the battle with a penanggalen which had controlled the Soul of Mataa Ryuu. It was an epic battle and a grand journey. Never would I have survived unscathed without the bravery and resolve of my trusted companions Miyako and Giltman.
Mido bows deeply to his two trusted companions before again looking up to Iko Tsuneo.

![]() |

"As Mido said, the fight against the undead monstrosity was a great moment. I was very proud of our work in that regard." He then bows as well.

![]() |

Oroz bows deeply and then introduces himself
I am Oroz some of my friends call me the Face on Fire
One of my fondest memories as a pathfinder was the opportunity to infiltrate the Deepmarket and strike a mighty blow against our rivals the Aspis Consortium.

![]() |

"I shot that penanggalen!" Miyako declares proudly. "Used an arrow of undead slaying for it and hit it right in its... uhm... entrails!"

![]() |

"Marduk slicez in two a big Ulfen War chief with magic axe. It be in Icy land. Now, Marduk endures cold." says eventually the woman, very proud of herself.

![]() |

Amara Li nods in approval of you answers. The ancient samurai speaks Bravely, trust, and honor are noble endeavors. Oroz you mention the Aspis Consortium, now I know a little about the organization I know your Society has a rivalry with them. What makes Pathfinders different from Aspis?

![]() |

The Aspis seeks only power and wealth for their own gains while the Pathfinder Society is driven by scholarly interest!
Mido summarizes swiftly.

![]() |

"I've seen most Aspis agents don't care one bit if a fellow agent dies. It means less competition and thus a better chance for them to be promoted instead."
Miyako nods at Mido. "Like master Mido said, they seek only wealth and power. Our motto is 'explore, cooperate, report.' I've personally found the cooperation part to be the most important, and I've made many friends within the Pathfinder Society."

![]() |

Marduk only wrinkles her eyes, letting the swifter tongues speak instead of her. However, she thinks back to her experience as a Pathfinder in the ice lands, battling and biting shadow lodge agents.
Aspis taste fishy. Pathfinder taste funny.

![]() |

As my compatriots have stated, the Pathfinder society seeks to further knowledge and understanding though exploring, cooperation, and reporting what we have found. I have found the Aspis to be quite different mostly seeking personal gain and wealth no matter the cost.

![]() |

Good, good , the samurai replies.
The conversation goes on for quite awhile as the many courses are brought forward, the samurai is very curious about the various religions especially the ones that aren't common of Tian Xia.
The misty rain blocks direct view of the sunset. Slowly, the sky darkens with the coming night, only to start lightening again, perhaps a sign that the clouds are breaking to the south. A warm, reddish-orange glow brightens the horizon. But instead of fading like a normal sunset, it glows brighter and brighter. The glow isn’t the sunset—it’s coming from the pier!

![]() |

What in the name of the master is going on? Mido wonders as he squints against the light trying to figure out what is producing it...
Perception1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

![]() |

It's hard to tell from the house, but it almost looks like a big fire at the dock is cutting through the fog.

![]() |

"I think we ought to take a closer look..."
Miyako gets up and heads toward the door. "Anyone coming with me?"

![]() |

"Yeah! I be comin'!" says Marduk, almost shouting over excitement.

![]() |

Miyako and Marduk scout down the path a little bit. They don't go far before they can see dozens of torches beginning to start up the path from the pier! It's clear a boat sits burning at the dock.
