Castle Amber

Game Master waynemarkstubbs

Deep in the Ethereal Plane lurks a small demiplane, consisting of a large gothic manor house and its grounds. Lights flicker in its windows, fountains play in its carefully manicured gardens, and the sound of feasting and jollity comes from within.

At first it might seem like a welcome respite to planar travelers, but those few who have escaped describe a place of chaos and madness, where all times and places seem to converge, and yet nothing ever changes. Where the dust of millenia lies on flower that are still as fresh as the day they were picked, and where visitors from a thousand worlds and realities have reshaped the very fabric of the house to their wills.

They describe an ancient, powerful, inbred family of nobles, trapped by a timeless curse, who have existed so long that they are no longer sure which parts of their personalities are truly their own, which are masks they have adopted to break the boredom of endless eons, and which have been whispered in their ears by sinister manipulators in the shadows...

I had a rule in my home game that every Monte Python reference immediately earned you one negative level that could never be removed.

Cool! Three more Python references and I get to play as a Lich!

We used to have a punch buggy rule for MP references... but mainly because it led to a 30 minute quote fest most games that screwed up game play.

These days, as one of the elderly, I take comfort in the odd MP reference

Sorry - update in a few hours - Non-Standard Life Event occurring.

Sorry for the brief hiatus - I'm currently between jobs and every hiring manager in London has suddenly arrived back from holiday and wants applications, tech tests, phonecalls, interviews etc. This means I have to spend loads of time doing that, and, worst of all, actually iron some shirts! I've been a bit distracted. I'll post something later this evening.

What skill is used to fire the bombards?

Welcome back! Hope the job search went well?

Bombard is a ranged attack, so BAB plus DEX, with a -4 unless someone is proficient in cannons.

As for my week, I have had 9 interviews in 6 days. Just waiting to hear.

Just wanted to make sure.... Was it Capt. Marie-Therese who read/sang the sea shanty?

No, it's just a bit of background fluff - maybe compiled after the event. I suppose Marie-Therese could have written it. Or maybe Stephen, who should be back from being dead real soon now.

We appear to have lost Corlan, which is rather unfortunate as he is the center of the current events.

That sucks. Can we play on without him? Either get someone else in the tub or 'lose' the encounter and move on?

We'll play out the encounter, and then we'll see what happens.

This is playing out far more colourfully AND how I would see the Ambers playing out warping the very reality they live in better than I remember the module as having been.

Could Celeste use Interstellar void. To freeze the water in the Gropey hot-tub?

Celeste Toronos wrote:

They're probably a bit far away to freeze, but sure, I'll certainly let you chill their hot-tub water to freezing cold, which will be, like, totally bogus dude, and give them a large circumstance penalty to pretty much everything.

Sorry!!! I'm back!

(When the action temporarily suspended, I also tried to take a week of vacation from work. My attempt was only partly successful -- I ended up doing work stuff 3 days out of 5. I'd have been happier blowing off work and keeping up with the PBP instead!)

Looks like Corlan gave his stuff to Lucia. I totally don't remember that.

So...I'll try to get Corlan his longsword back next round if someone else will man the cannon.

GM: What would be involved in getting the sword back to Corlan? How far is he from 'shore?'

Well, you could attempt a heroic R2D2-to-Luke toss with Corlan plucking it out of the sky...

Or Lucia could rip the door off a cupboard and try surfing out to him...

Ask Mordan to summon an eagle?

It sobs quietly.. "I have a name you know. You didn't even bother to ask that, did you. I'm just a...a thing to you. Sit on that man' head, put out his hair, then clear off. I feel. I compose poetry. I have depths. But no - just pluck me from the water then walk away once you have no more use for me..."

"I suppose I'll just slope off and sit in some cistern or something until whatever anchoring magic is in this place dissipates. Don't worry about me. Not that you ever did. You heartless bastard."

It begins to slope off moistly down the hallway.

Err...how are so many zombies attacking us through the doorway? Kind of defeats the whole purpose of bottlenecking them. That being said, bottlenecking in a PbP game can get awfully boring for those not in the front line....

While we have a quiet moment perhaps Celeste can now try to indentify the Ioun stones.

How many spellcraft checks does she need to make?

Oh yeah, the ioun stones. I'll assume you take the time you need to work this out:

1 Dusty Rose Prism (+1 insight bonus to AC)

1 flawed Clear Spindle (no need to eat, but must drink twice as much. Whisky counts)

1 Nacreous Grey Sphere - immune to aging

1 cracked Pale Ruby Trillian - +1 to Stealth checks

1 Tourmaline Sphere (die at -CON+2 hp instead of -CON hp)

2 dull grey stones that don't appear to do anything

Of course, to get the benefits you have to have them whirling around your head. Anywhere else that might look ridiculous. Here...

As the GM and some of you may know, I don't have home internet and post from my local library. Well, I went to the ER last night and found out that I have a kidney stone. The doctors are hoping I'll pass it within a week. Right now the pain's not bad, so my tentative plan is to visit the library briefly every other day to catch up/stay current in the games I play on these forums. If the pain gets as bad as I'm told it might, that's subject to change. So if I disappear...that's the reason. I'll try to post an update when I can.

The GM may bot my character as he sees fit.
