Here's how I handled each round of Space Combat.

I'd start off like this:

GM Hmm wrote:

We are now starting Ship Combat!

In order to make this run smoothly in PBP, I am going to have Engineering and Helm phases happen simultaneously.

Remember, there are summaries in the player handouts, or you can read up on Starship Combat on page 316 of the CRB.

★ ---- ★ ---- ★ ---- ★

HELM / ENGINEERING

Captain Keskodai:

The Duonode Computers on the Pegasus offers +2 to any two checks per round. Where would you like to apply them? To the pilot, the guns, sensors?

Also consider whether you want to taunt or encourage, and where you will give your bonus.

Engineer Quig:

Are you acting as Engineer or a Second Science Officer this round? What is your action?

Science Officer Raia:

Go ahead and let me know whether you acting as a Second Engineer or as Science Officer. What is your action?

Pilot Iseph:

Please do the Piloting Roll-Off versus the Goblins to determine who moves first! Iseph, can you beat this roll?

Goblin Pilot Initiative Check!: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

If you can’t... It’s your turn to move the ship!

Everyone, remember that the Pegasus also always offers +4 Computers, +1 Piloting checks.

Gunners Altronus & Obozaya:

Please put your gunnery rolls under spoilers now. (Though any RP can be outside spoilers for everyone to enjoy.) We'll add all modifiers to them when we resolve this round in the gunnery phase.

BOTH ENGINEERING AND HELM PHASES ARE UP!

Then everyone would tell me what they were doing. Meanwhile the pilot would make his rolls and I'd know if I had to move my ships first. If my roll was terrible like the one above, I'd tell the group that I was moving first because Iseph automatically beat the roll-off.

Once we were done moving, I'd usually have all the rolls from the gunners and the modifiers to add to them, so then I'd resolve everything in the gunnery phase with the attack rolls from the goblin ships.

To make this faster, the GM could do both piloting checks for both PCs and NPCs at the start... But I'd only do that with a slower moving group. My group was responsive enough that they had some fun in seeing if they beat the Goblin's piloting checks!

Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsbo)

Hey, is anybody GMing the Commencement? I'm really sick and can't go to the con I wanted to play all of SFS' released scenarios at, so I was hoping I could play a bit of catch-up.

I'll take your format for sure GM Hmmm.

Hey, all.

I'm incredibly new to PbP here and organized play in general, but thanks to Google-fu and helpful threads on the forum, I've stumbled my way here.

I was wondering if there's any table open for an utterly new SFS PbP player that would be starting soon.

More Info About My Lack of Experience in the Form of a Ramble:
When it comes to Pathfinder and Paizo in general, I've been playing PF for about 5-6 years in non-organized play. I've been both DM and player, and I've run a handful of Paizo's modules and adventure paths in Golarion as well as whole campaigns in homebrew settings. I have almost every Player Companion, Campaign Setting, and Core Rulebook (not so much on the modules or APs), and I love to troll through them over-and-over. What can I say? I'm a lore aficionado... and I've spent more time that I care to admit reading up on the most pointless tidbits of lore. It's just who I am - an occasionally obsessive pedant.

When it comes to Starfinder, I hope to be quick on the pick up, since I do have experience with PF and I bought nearly every single SF book as soon as it was available. That includes the CRB, the pre-season SFS quests, the Dead Suns AP: Part 1, the First Contact primer, and so on. That said, I have yet to actually play in a session of Starfinder (woe is me!), and I made a vow to only open up the adventures/modules if I were to DM. With all that, I'm incredibly impatient to finally dive in and play an SF session.

When it comes to Play-by-Post, I'm not entirely new. Starting back in middle school (about 9-10 years ago!) I began my adventures in writing and roleplay by joining a popular online forum dedicated entirely to roleplaying (esp. PbP roleplaying). Since then, I've roleplayed in dozens of settings and games and campaigns, and I even started taking up the hobby of writing and worldbuilding back in high school. And since then, I've developed the skill set of character and world development through the aforementioned means and more (professional theatre and improv experience, writing clases at my university, practice and more practice, etc.).

All that said, I'm still new to official SFS PbP. Despite what the case I've made for myself, I'm green as can be.

That's why I've gone through the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide and the various helpful resources floating around (from GMHmm's PbP GM kit [for the awesome copy-paste character sheet] to Painlord's Advanced PbP guide to Paizo's FAQs).

What I mean to say through my big monologue is two things:
- I'm optimistic and confident that I shouldn't suck too terribly.
- I'm itching to finally play SF because omgplswhycantibeinspacerightnowwithstrawberrymachinecakeplshelp.

I'm going to be starting a game of 1-02 The Fugitive of the Red Planet next Friday and we still have plenty of room. The sign-up sheet is here. And I have am perfectly happy with helping people with getting used to pbp or organized play, too.

Acquisitives

I'm in Sedoriku's game and will be helping out as well so we can all have a grand ol' time getting all you newbies started on your SFS addiction. ;)

Plus I get to flex my level 2 Ysoki so there's that too!

Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsbo)

I'd join but I swear to god I'll go insane from the disconnect if my character doesn't do the Confirmation before anything else :P It just bothers me for whatever reason.

Wayfinders

Do them out of order. I did. Sometimes you get sent on a field mission before you're fully Confirmed (Commenced?) as a full-fledged Starfinder.

We could even play it off as having one of the other characters doing a 'mission mentoring' type of thing.

Or do the Commencement as a 'flashback' after your first successful mission.

Alrighty then, sounds good, I guess.

Well then, I believe we have a full table! I'll get a thread up shortly for people to report in on.

We also happen to have covered every class between the 6 PCs. How convenient.

Did somebody multiclass?

Not as far as I can tell. We have all but one of the classes covered.

Edit: Double checking it looks like it's the operative.

Sorry for double posting, but Paizo Fan, Maar the Volcano Monk, SolidSteve82, JAF0, Wildfire Witch, and Blurhy, The discussion thread is open and ready! Please check in!

Gummy Bear
Eric Collins - France (Pangea-Zeta)

Filling a drop at my table of 1-01: The Commencement. First person to check in here with a completed character and stat-block gets the seat.

Lantern Lodge

VC Arvin puts out an all agents buletin.

"I have a team heading for Akiton Fugative on the Red Planet 01-02 that is still short a member. First come first served. Please come and see me in my office."

I'm happy going with four players on this, but only have three at the moment, so first in gets the slot.

I have a table who have just completed SFS Quest - Into the Unknown. The players had intended to move to SFS 1-01 - The Commencement after that. However, two players now have to drop out due to work reasons, so I'm recruiting for replacements.

The current team consists of

  • An android mechanic (exocortex) scholar
  • A human operative (daredevil) ace pilot
  • A vesk soldier bounty hunter
  • A lashunta (damaya) enoy icon

Will keep recruitment up for a day or so before making the final selection, based on a few factors, e.g. party balance, posting rate, past experiences, etc.

The recruitment thread is here.

Exo-Guardians

Dotting for adventure

Wayfinders

^ Good, because you’ve been a lot of fun so far. I’m looking forward to more games with you!

Exo-Guardians

Not only that. I may throw my GM Hat on too. Want to get my 4th PFS star by PaizoCon. More Novas don't hurt either.

Wayfinders

Good plan! GM Hats are the coolest hats.

Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsbo)

Just finished 1-00. I was wondering if anyone was planning on running The Commencement anytime soon?

Sovereign Court

If The Commencement pops up i'll gladly sign up too!

Soon (tm)

I just started Gameday Part II, so after that finishes, I'll be starting up some beginner games.

Scarab Sages

I will start something soon (tm). But waiting till my RL settles a bit in the next few weeks and not to run over the current running Gameday.

Sovereign Court

I'm opening up recruitment for the 1-00 I planned, and I will start at soon as the table is full. Sign up here (link)

Hey Kludde, reckon at some point you could be stabbed into running a 'whole season' type deal like the old days? :)

I'm assuming the sign up link is your Google doc? I signed up originally for PBP GameDay but am still up for it if you're now kicking it off!!

Also here.

It is now past the date these were set to run. Are these cancelled?

Zahir, a while back Gayel Nord sent me a note about cancelling his games due to real life issues. He said he PMed everyone involved. I would assume for now that this one is not happening unless you hear otherwise from the GM.

Hmm

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Ok, you should probably remove the link to his signup sheet then.

I wasn’t aware it was still up there, but I’ll try to ping Castamir and let him know.

Yes, it's the very same game, the kick-off just got delayed a bit. I botched creating the link above.

If you are quick you can take my slot, it has not started. I just backed out since I have a chance to play it in person.

Dataphiles

Yes, Jelloarm, just join us at this thread (link), and we have a full table!

Jelloarm, will you play this with your halfling?

He can apply it to his halfling, but has to use a pregen.
