Scarab Sages

Welcome everyone to the OOC thread for my first Pathfinder Society play-by-post game, Delirium's Tangle by Crystal Frasier.

Let me lay a few ground-rules first that I hope will make the game more enjoyable for all.

1) As Mark Moreland mentioned in a post upthread, by playing your character in this game, you are committing yourself to not play him or her in another PFS game until this game is finished. Because of this, I will try to move this game forward with all appropriate haste.

2) You are committing to posting at least ONCE A DAY during the week. Weekends tend to be slower for many people, so I am relaxing this rule for those days. Since we are all probably in different time zones, I understand that your normal posting time may be 3 AM for me; that's fine. I also heartily encourage you to post more often.

3) If you know that you will be unable to post for a day or more, please let us know in this thread. I'm not an ogre and totally understand if something calls you away. RL is always more important, just let us know. In addition, Thanksgiving is coming up for the Yanks, so I will also relax this rule for that long weekend as well.

4) If you disappear on us before the end of the scenario, I will list your character as having played this scenario and give you whatever XP, GP, and PA you have acquired so far.

5) All die-rolls should be done with the built-in dice rolling tag, e.g. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 131d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

6) Once we are in combat, please post your attack and potential damage roll in the same post. This will save us time.

7) Combat can get complicated and time-consuming in pbp games. Please try and check the 'boards as often as you can, so that we can keep things moving. If we don't hear from you, I will post an action for you.

8) Feel free to make most skill/attack/damage/saves etc yourself. The only exception to this rule is when you are doing something that your character would not logically know the answer to. That means that I will be making all Appraise, Bluff, Diplomacy, Disable Device, Perception, Sense Motive, and Stealth checks for you. Just let me know that you want to use the skill, I will secretly make it and let you know the outcome.

So enough rules. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the above points. While I get things organized, why don't all of you introduce your characters and tell us a bit about your PFS history. I'll go first.

My name is Alex and I just moved to Portland, OR from NYC. I've been involved in PFS since the fall of 2008 when I ran my first game at the Compleat Strategist on E 33rd St in Manhattan. I then joined the Pathfinder_NYC group and continued playing with them until I moved out west last July. I started a new group here (the Portland Pathfinder Society) and host a game every other week at Guardian Games. Oh, and I was one of the PFS GMs at GenCon 2009, although I sadly didn't make it there this year (what with the move and getting married and all). Strange fact about me: I have only ever GM'd PFS, I don't even have a character. If I did, he would probably be around 5th or 6th level or so, I am guessing.

If you'd like to see how I run pbp games, you can check out this THREAD ON THE ENWORLD BOARDS.

Alright, to myself, I am Peter and one of those in different timezones - out in the NE of Scotland. I have been playing my first PFS at GenconUK 2008, and then only via PbP. And it was great fun, unfortunately I did not sign on for more, but played LFR instead (please, no comments).

But I know Complete Strategist in NYC, that's where I encountered my future gaming group when I moved to NYC in 2000. Played then at NG, until 2003. Just wondering if we actually met there. Or in 2007 for a one of visit at NG.

My name is Nick and I live in sunny and expensive Irvine, CA (the OC for those not familiar with the area). I played LFR heavily and started investing more time in pathfinder when I couldn't put up with the terribleness anymore. I've been dabbling in PFS for over a year but only started heavily playing the past couple months. I organize things for a small group of players down here.

I've never played in a structured PBP game before. This should be fun.

Probably not, Peter, although we may know the same people if you were at all involved with the Living Greyhawk scene in NYC. Many of the Pathfinder_NYC folks are former LG players. I didn't start playing at Compleat Strategist until 2008 (although I'd been shopping there since '95), and only played a few games at Neutral Ground before they closed almost two years ago.

Hello there!
My name is Juan and I'm a spanish guy around 30. I live in Andalucia, so I have another daytime. But I'll post once everyday (minimum).
I married about 2 years ago and almost all my roleplaying experience since that day was in Play by Post webs. I'm still trying to take my wife into the roleplaying thing, but she has some kind of "anti-roleplaying" spell that makes it almost impossible. She doesn't play roleplaying-games, but she is indeed a good sorcerer casting "that" spell.
I have never played Pathfinder before. I have a lot of experience in others RPGs (I have been playing since 13), including 3.5 edition. I have bought the Core rulebook and the Bestiary in english, because Spain hasn't his own spanish version of this marvelous game (I feel ashamed of my own country in this matter ¬_¬). But, well, I'm quit good at english, so no problem.
I'm willing to use this books, and this game will be:
-my first Pathfinder game ever
-my first Pathfinder Society game ever
-my chance to use this BIG core rulebook that I bought.

So, thank you and... Let's begin the battle! (read this last in "semiorc" battlecry mode ^_^)

Hello Juan, and welcome to your first Pathfinder game! I hope that we will not disappoint. Andalusia is a beautiful place that I was lucky to visit there many years ago.

My name is Matt, and I live in yet another timezone (near Denver Colorado). I didn't really play RGPs other than on the computer (Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc.) until Pathfinder came out. I played in a home game with some friends from work for a year or so, and only started playing Society games a few months ago when I first moved to Denver.

I've never done a play-by-post game before, although my friends from my former home game have talked about the possibility from time to time, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this works.

Juan, I completely sympathize with your "non-RPG wife situation". I was able to get mine to play the D&D Castle Ravenloft game a few times, but that's her absolute breaking point.

Liberty's Edge

Indeed a good place to live. I'm considering sending a request to the Pathfinder Staff proposing an Andalucia-like culture ^_^. It could be like Taldor, but with a lot of "Paella" and good "Ham". Ah! A lot of Minotaurs. There is so many spanish cliche made real here in Andalucia ^_^.

(Sorry, I'm making this topic an off-topic)

Scarab Sages

One thing that I forgot to mention earlier: please email me your character's Pathfinder Society number (e.g. XXXXX-X), if you haven't already, so that I can properly credit everyone.

The Exchange

My name is Peter and I also live in the OC, more specifically in Santa Ana. I was pretty hardcore about LFR until I couldn't take the issues with it anymore. I played LG for the last 3-4 years of it, so when I started pathfinder, it was an easy transition. I started PFS a few months ago when a friend suggested we start some gamedays in the area. I've never done any PBP stuff so this will be new.

Scarab Sages

FYI: I'll wait until everyone has "checked in" here on this thread before launching the official IC game, just to make sure everyone who expressed initial interest is actually still on-board.

Liberty's Edge

Montesquieu: D&D Castle Ravenloft, eh? Mm... maybe I should try that game. But the game I have in my home is Arkham Horror. I don't know if that's too difficult for her to begin with.

Branding: I have sent you the PFS ID and fixed the thing in my sheet. Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All. My name is Dan. I started playing PFS in August of this year after running into some old friends who I used game with from about 5th to 10th grade. I pretty much stopped playing table top RPGs in high school because of the stigma that comes along with it but I would occasionally organize a D&D game over a holiday weekend or something. I'd say I was a closet gamer. Long story short I stopped caring so much about what people think and have fully embraced my inner geek. I'm addicted to PFS and I love what the Piazo team has done with the 3.5 system.

I'm right there with the other guys whose wives are non-gamers. Mine is an anti-gamer. My favorite quote from her is "Dungeons and Dragons is like birth control." She was joking of coarse but she is not into it at all.

In this group i am playing a 2nd lvl taldin Sorcerer named Silus R. Night III. He's a rather extravagant type of fellow and a bit of an elitist.

Anyway, this is my 1st PBP game and I'm looking forward to sharing the experience with all of you :)

Liberty's Edge

Welcome, Mortran.
I was one of those "I'm too worried about what people think of me to enjoy my hobbies" guy. Now, I enjoy my hobbies and I scream it everywhere I go.
In fact, I'm thinking in screaming it here. Here I go:

"I enjooooooy playing roleplaying games!!!!!!"

How was that ^_^?

Scarab Sages

It seems everyone is ready to go. Have fun everyone!

In case you haven't noticed, I've been adding hyperlinks to the PathfinderWiki into the IC thread (I am an admin there). Let me know if they're useful to you, otherwise I will leave them out.

I personally really like them.

I love that links! I have no experience at all in Pathfinder Society, and that links makes me taste the flavor of the adventure. Thanks!

Ravenath, I have to say that I love your Spanish idioms translated into English. I learned German and English at the same time, and I sometimes do the same with those languages.

P.S.: I am waiting for Auke Teeninga to make his first post before going on to the next part of the story. In the meantime, if you'd like to do any shopping or prepping now that you know what the mission will be, you can do so on this thread.

Oops, didn't notice we started already! But I'm there now! :-)

Scarab Sages

Since you're going to be going underground, I have to ask two questions:

1) Who is carrying a light source?
2) What is your marching order going to be, both for 5' and 10' corridors.

Here's a list of everyone:
Aquila - Halfling Druid 2
Farouq - Human Barbarian 1
Markus "Earthquake" Kalepo - Human Fighter 1
Takuma - Half-orc Fighter 1
Daxter - Human Enchanter 1
"Reg" - Half-orc Fighter 1

Note: I think you'll do okay in combat situations.

Oh, I'm sorry if there is something wrong with my english ^_^. I think this could be good for the adventure. It will sound more like "orc" speaking :D

Branding Opportunity wrote:

Well, my samurai needs 2 hands to hold his katana, so I hope someone else could hold the light source. And, you know what? I'm a semi-orc! I can slain enemies in complete darkness!

And... that's why I would like to go first.

Grand Lodge

Human

Well, Aquila is very perceptive (good trapspotter, good tracker) and I think he is the only healer, but has very short legs, so in front would be the best. If we enter combat, he can take a step back.

His animal companion Garra (an eagle) can either hover above the party or stay back and fly over to combat when he is needed, but with all the fighters in the party it's probably not needed.

Oh, and Aquila doesn't mind holding a torch.

Scarab Sages

OK, I'll just make up a marching order and you tell me if you want to change it:

5' Corridor
Aquila(with torch), Takuma, Daxter, Farouq, Markus, Reg

10' Corridor
Aquila(with torch)/Takuma, Daxter/Farouq, Markus/Reg

Liberty's Edge

There is something to be changed. Where it says "Takuma" in your post, it has to say "Takuma (with his big, long katana, held with his two big, big hands). ^_^ Just joking. I'm fine with the marching order.

And Montesquieu would probably think anyone calling him "Reg" was trying to belittle him. :)

At this point you are about to enter the maze of Delirium's Tangle. Everyone needs to decide who will make the Survival check for the party to navigate through the maze. One person can make the check and two people can assist (only needing a DC 10 check to succeed).

Here are everyone's Survival checks:
Aquila +10
Farouq +6
Markus -1
Takuma +1
Daxter -1
Reginald Wellington Montesquieu -2

I guess Aquila will make the check, assisted by Farouq and Takuma, yes?

GM BrOp - PFS wrote:

Sounds good, but I think it's best for Aquila just to take 10. So that would result in 20, 22 or 24 depending on the results of Farouq and Takuma.

I've got this eagle Garra along, he'll be in the back.

Aquila(with torch), Takuma, Daxter, Farouq, Markus, Reg, Garra

10' Corridor
Aquila(with torch)/Takuma, Daxter/Farouq, Markus/Reg, Garra

Actually, Survival is one you make yourself. If everyone "takes 10" on these checks, then the total is indeed 24.

Officially you can't take 10 on "Aid another" checks (Core Rulebook p. 86).

Thanks, that's a rule I didn't know. In any case, both made the check, so all is well.

Since we are now getting into the meat of the scenario, I want to acquaint you with a few ways in which I try to manage combat more efficiently. For any of you who have played in a PbP game, you know that combat can take FOREVER. I try to cut corners whenever possible. Here are a few:

1) Please try and pay attention to the IC and OOC threads when we are in combat. Auke's idea of subscribing to the RSS feed for them is very good, and will help you stay on top of them. This is especially true when we first roll initiative, as it can hold up the entire combat. If you haven't posted an action in combat within 24 hours of my last major update (you'll see what I mean by this below), I will NPC you for that round.

2) I believe that I have already mentioned this above, but it bears repeating: please make attack and damage rolls at the same time, in the same post. That will save us from me having to tell you if the attack succeeded or not and then you having to write a second post.

3) I always use combat maps.

I think that's it for now. Any questions?

B) A wayfinder.

For item A I don't know if you want to make up a price or just have me pay for a generic masterwork tool.

It might be a good idea that you as the GM roll all initiatives. That might speed things up a bit.

I have a question regarding the maps. How will you use it? I think this messageboards doesn't have a map utility built-in, right?

Just checked here again, subscribed, so I don't mniss anything. Now, with Farouq being first, at least in group's initiative, just waiting for a map ;)

I'm really curious about how will the GM handle the map. ^_^

Amazing! The map image is just too good! Two questions:

1- how did you do it? Did you use any software for that?
2- What is the thing in k-9?
