Also under the RoW rules for it, if you fail a save and take non-lethal cold damage you gain the fatigued condition until you have warmed up via a heat source and the non-lethal has been removed. Can't remember how quick it is restored, I think it is at least an hours rest to warm up to remove x about of non-lethal from the cold.

Snjorrin has Endure Elements running, so I think that means he can ignore the Fort saves Vs cold weather (at least for the moment)...?

Hmmm based on this
If a creature with this special attack hits with the indicated attack (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. Unless otherwise noted, grab can only be used against targets of a size equal to or smaller than the creature with this ability. If the creature can use grab on creatures of other sizes, it is noted in the creature's Special Attacks line.
Looks like it has to hit with the bite first and then it automatically makes a free grapple attempt in addition to damage. So Grab only happens if bite hits.

Thanks for bringing this up, it made me have to go back and reread the two different sources used for this creature in the AP. Aðvinr is correct, he should have had to attack before grappling. In which case, the modifier rolled should have been even lower, a 5 as opposed to a 9 and I do believe that I glanced at the wrong number on Fizzlewhisk's sheet to begin with if his CMD is 12.
DM Twilight |
No, I said in the game thread that I would make changes from now on. If I had used the 5 for the attack instead of the 9 for the grab, it would have missed. I don't see any reason to make you risk having his attack make it simply because I fudged things when we can see that the result would have been a failure if I hadn't.

No but if I can I can get to the square just north of Fizzlewhisk to give the creature a third target. Also I would get flanking/sneak attack.
Planning on dropping my bow and going two shortswords. Don't have two weapon fighting but it would give me two chances to get a strike and add sneak attack damage.
It will take me a full round to get into position but firing into melee plus soft cover in front of me -6 will do me little good on the bow.

Yes, but when moving through difficult terrain, every diagonal costs three squares of movement.
Since, in heavy snow, each square of 'normal' movement costs four squares, it would be reasonable to extrapolate that each diagonal costs six.
Snjórinn Verkirsson |
@Mervyn: Yes, but think of it this way - if you moved one square North, and one square East, it would be 8 squares in heavy snow, whilst *technically* moving one square diagonally North East would be six squares, even though you cover the same distance.

Posting here so as not to gum up the gameplay thread, but should folks be getting attacks of opportunity as the elementals try to grab people carrying lots of sharp, pointy things? Are these things normally skilled at that sort of thing? It would change Machaera's idea of what threat they pose. Sigh. Looks like she'll have to invest some skill points in something other than "things that blow other stuff up."
Hope you're feeling better, DM. Migraines are evil.

As far as normal Ice Elementals go they do not have improved grab so they should be provoking when they attempt the combat maneuver.
Of course these could be a hybrid type that is just for RoW.

No, you're right it should provoke an AoO from the target. I'm just incredibly forgetful and have trouble keeping track of stuff like this, guys. My bad. Snjórinn you may retroactively make an AoO if you like, I'm going to with hold doing so with my DMNPC for now so that the players get more from the combat.

No worries; I was asking just for my own information as much as anything else, since I'm still shaky on some of the fancier bits of combat myself. Honestly, even after playing Pathfinder and D&D for *mumble, mumble* years, I'm lucky if I can remember the details of the spells most of my characters have started off using in the long line of wizards, witches, bards, and assorted princesses. :)

Gameplay thread Check it out and head to the discussion thread to see what the others are looking for etc. Fizzlewhisk/Ravel and Advinr/Ingrid can help fill you in and answer questions as well.

I'm back home, had the world's crappiest internet at the hotel that kept cutting out on me couldn't do a damn thing. I'm a bit exhausted and just want to relax right now. I'll try to update tonight, but I wouldn't expect anything until tomorrow. Sorry guys, and thank you for your patience!

Hello, everyone! My computer informs me that its hard drive is about to give up the ghost, with much wailing and gnashing of teeth, so I've been trying to make sure everything is backed up, and then this afternoon will be given over to the joys of computer shopping. Last thing I need this close to the end of term, but anyway - this is just to say that my posting might be spotty over the next few days until I have a stable computer again. Feel free to DMNPC Machaera for a bit to move things along if necessary.

Right-o! I have a new computer now, and mercifully the only thing that didn't survive the attempt to salvage my latest files that hadn't been backed up yet was a save from one of the silly games I had on it for old times' sake. (Ah, isometric CRPGs! :) )
So that's a relief. Of course, it's completely messed up my schedule at a ludicrously busy time of year, but that's what caffeine, adrenaline, and stubbornness are for, and at least I'm back online.
