I am glad you are doing that.

Now that we know each other a little bit better, let me tell you what I imagine the game to be...

This Adventure Path, more than any other, is supposed to take your character beyond the realm of the ordinary. They are not just going to defeat a big bad or a place or a region.
They are going to save the whole of Golarion.
Your characters will become Mythical. You know, two actions per round. Immune to everything and anything. Strikes that can break mountains.
Piece of cake, right?
The way of doing that is to face and defeat, the greatest evil there it. Abyss itself.
Abyss has a lot of resources. A lot of POWER. A lot of knowledge. A lot of time.
They know everything. They have agents everywhere. Damn! They have ways to get even inside each of your characters.
Abyss is like... a Dungeon Master.
This is the AP where the DM can take the gloves off. Where he can cheat, lie, confound and "keep" within the game.
Because that is what Abyss can do. What Abyss WILL do.
That is what your characters are facing.
If now it doesn't sound like a walk in the park, then you have grasped the concept.

Now, a spoiler. I would like you to read it, unless you are VERY adventurous and want to realize it in-game, maybe too late...

Spoiler:
Maybe you have realized it by now, maybe you don't. The religious experience your characters experienced was a very humbling one. For Iomedae. She was there, with them, AS ONE OF THEM. Not as an almighty all-powerful god, but as just another one of them. Not ordering, or guiding, or teaching. Just helping. In the end, your characters will end up working not FOR Iomedae, but ALONGSIDE Iomedae. That is if they plan to win this one. Abyss is counting on you to FIGHT Iomedae. To doubt and resist her. Abyss whats you to realize Iomedae, and her cult of followers, are the real enemy. The zealots that your characters need to defeat. And maybe some of your characters will realize that and distrust the crusade. And the crusade will start to hinder your character's efforts. And your characters will expose the crusade as the corrupt and evil force they really are. And then the crusade will excommunicate and attack your characters.
And Abyss will laugh, ecstatic.
And if Abyss is very, very lucky, this game ends with half of your characters fighting the other half.
Conquering Golarion? Boring. Having your party destroy themselves? That is what they call fun.
So, if your characters have "issues" with Iomedae and the crusade, I recommend for them to get over it. QUICKLY. Because the only way they are going to win this one is to unite them, and with them. And you don't have much time to do it.

Not at all. It’s a struggle in real life religions. Many who claim membership in a faith, even powerful leaders, don’t live up to its ideals. I won’t bore you with all the different tales of prominent preachers found to be involved with prostitutes, cheating on their wives, etc, but I can’t tell you that no one hates that like Christians who are actually trying to live up to their faith’s doctrines (which you may we’ll know, I don’t know your RL beliefs of course). I think of what we’ve just seen as a dramatic demonstration that Iomedae is the real deal. A lot of her “followers” are hypocrites. But she really believes this stuff and really follows it. It’s not contradictory at all to see and point out a gulf between her and some who claim her name.

Frankly, Uriel think Iomedaeans are pansies who y’all a big game about fighting evil but aren’t willing to make the hard choices*. But when the actual goddess, who puts his Empyreal Lord patton to shame, shows up in person, he’s still totally floored. He’ll happily point out if he sees “Iomedaeans” not living up to her.

*I mean, he’s kind of a zealot even for Ragathiel’s followers. I’m planning on taking him into Crimson Templar, of whom it is said “Even the most devout followers of good can recognize the need for ruthlessness when opposing true evil. The crimson templars of Ragathiel are taught that mercy is a virtue reserved for only those capable of accepting redemption. They must learn this lesson well, for they are trained to face the heartless legions of Hell. These women and men are Heaven’s assassins, and they tread a bloody path so the oaths of others remain untarnished. Their mission is a thankless one, as righteous allies often view them as just a step away from corruption.” So yeah. As overawed as Ragathiel is by the presence of a Lawful Good goddess, That doesn’t mean he’s going to give all of her followers a pass. It also doesn’t mean he’s going to convert any time soon. He respects Iomedae for her power and ideals, but Ragathiel is his lord and master.

My character is not really a fan of Iomedae either. She does not think highly of mortals who became gods because that blurs the lines. However, she does realize that these demons are trouble because they have done terrible things in the Worldwound and Kyonin. She does think that becoming a Riftwarden is a great way to fight back, to light a candle in the darkness.

I like your response to this.

Aberus is in a similar boat. He's got a complicated relationship with Iomedae's church...but not necessarily with Iomedae herself. And he was raised in her church, at least initially.

Having a manifestation of her appear is a fairly significant event, and one that brings a lot of emotions to the surface. On the one hand, there is the reverence for her as a goddess and the acknowledgement of her direct support for what he's doing. But on the other hand, it's still difficult to separate his feelings for her church from her, specifically. I manifested that as feeling briefly ashamed for letting the former taint the latter. Or at least, that was my intent. I didn't have a lot of time when I posted. :)

I think Alexa's response is right on. There's "this isn't my deity", but she's still a deity...and a rather important one. That's complicated. It is wholly justified for her response to be complicated as a result, especially as she tries to reconcile what she believes with what she sees and feels.

It kind of reminds me of Dragons of Spring Dawning when Tanis goes before the Dark Queen, or any other times the gods manifest, like at the Cataclysm. They may not be your gods but they are gods nonetheless. In DL they are the creators of the world and the races, even if you do not worship them.

Not sure how that might translate with one of the ascendant.

That makes sense. I was thinking that Clerics of Nethys, or Clerics with the Magic Domain more generally, got some access to arcane spells (possibly I was thinking of D&D 3.5, where Magic Domain clerics can use Arcane wands). They get a little, but not as much as I thought. Alernatively, you could follow Riftwarden with the

Evangelist PrC (of Nethys, presumably). Its Aligned Class feature will continue progressing your wizard casting while gaining some Nethys-oriented 'divine' features. I might do Evangelist (or the related Sentinel) for Uriel once I run out of Crimson Templar levels. Or I may just go back to Paladin.

Darya is a follower of Ragathiel as well, and her personality is that she does everything to the fullest. She could legitimately be described as an ethical hedonist, in that she takes enjoying the good aspects of life to 11, and at the same time is pretty much merciless on the battlefield, except when somebody shows themselves worthy of Mercy.

I'm actually considering Ragathiel's Devotion, which requires executing and known and confirmed evildoers daily, but at the same time some of the stuff the other crusaders have done rubbed her the wrong way.

And unlike most of the others this isn't her first blatantly supernatural experience. She realizes that was Iomedae, she is suitably impressed, but at the same time both Uriel's and Alexa's reactions make perfect sense to her.

I like the Riftwarden PRC.

I took a look at the Archives of Neyths for his Evangelist abilities. I don't really like them. Maybe if I can find another god that I find interesting (Iomedae really never has been a goddess I am attracted to, but then again most of the Golarion gods are meh to me, except Asmodeus, Ragathiel, Sheyln and Calistria, I might go Evangelist for them) But following the Galadriel base, I don't necessarily see her worshipping a higher power per se. Giving respect. Sure. Actively worshipping, not so sure.

For what it's worth, Arloric has a very broad view of the gods, and even what constitutes a god. His own power comes from the land and its cycles, but he acknowledges that there are many gods and spirits jockeying for power and influence in the world, and nearly all of them deserve respect or fear. While he follows the Old Faith, Iomedae still is one of the gods he respects most, as in his mind, she's one of the few gods left who gave a damn about Sarkoris' people after it was gone.

Alexa, were we still doing that thing where our backstories are linked because Hulrun asked you to spy on me?

Sario would be a bit unphased I feel, she is a member of the Green Faith so her Diety is around her all the time. She understands who The Inheritor is but at the same time she knows that this war is being dragged out as well since all the Human Gods cannot get their own flocks to come together to drive the Demons back. She did live in the World Wound as well
