Baldwin the Merciful's: Razor Coast (Inactive)

Game Master baldwin the merciful

The Razor Coast has drawn men to madness and slaughter since the world was young. Tulita natives, born from the same fire as this jagged coast, claim the Razor existed long before the world’s other lands. It is a crucible of flame cooled by the ocean’s caress and its mountains, reefs, and lightless depths teem with as many terrors as lustrous spoils. The Razor bucks the trappings of civilization in much the same manner the storm-tossed sea spurns the men who dare mount her. This is no place for the weak-willed. Untested souls are food for its storms, its fickle gods, its ancient spirits, and the evil predations of unfathomable creatures. No less dangerous are the men who make the coast their home and whose dark desires put most horrors to shame.

He closes his eyes and concentrates.

Message Spell to Astrianna –

I’m armed and ready now. I appreciate the information.

As he continues to watch the door he considers Astrianna for a moment.

Damn, that was nice her to warn me… I guess I’ll have to thank her proper for that – if I’m not killed today, that is…

Another 20 minutes go by and the captain looking through his spyglass yells up to the crows nest, "Are the caravels still moving to pass behind?"

Darius:

The wind's still favor the sloop, the two caravels are non-aggressive while the sloop is preparing to defend the caravels. Pretty classic escort situation for a high valued merchant. Let the valuable merchants ships run while the escort engages the threat

You are a bit confused on why the captain Longplank made an aggressive action. Especially, since you don't know there are sick people on your ship.

Distance: 4.8 miles, they have the wind with closed haul.

He glances to the main deck to see if there is any sign of Astri or Sath with the sick family. What's holding them up? they should have secured the family and any other people showing signs and had them up here by now.

He yells down to a crew member, "Knock on the sickbay door and get Sawbones up here! Then get to those lines.

" Aye...Yes sir!"

There is loud banging on the sickbay door, "Sawbones....git yer arse up to the captain on the aft quarterdeck."

the mood is uneasy and distrustful. The people don't think they are being told the truth, and some sickness is beginning to spread on the ship.

Astri disappears leaving Sath to deal with the situation on his own. "W...wh...where did she go? Why the secrets...are we all going to get the flu like that family. Look that family's sick too...are we going to be next?"

"I want to go on the main deck too."

Sath you hear the sound of battle stations, which you know means those nonessential passengers are to stay below deck out of the way.

The Cookie doesn't question the food and water request that Bri and Adriel make. "Captain says to give it...Cookie does as Captain directs." He mumbles. In less than 5 minutes he has the water and food rations prepared for the two of you to carry back to the main deck.

Okay I did not want to leave Sath alone to deal with the situation herself- that was not my intention. Astrianna was escaping after she had gotten out with the family, which apparently did not happen and still hasn't happened. So...

Looking down the ladder of the hold while invisible, Astrianna sighs and thinks for a moment. She takes off her gloves and cloak, quickly storing them in her haversack. The bard taps her hat to change her appearance once again, this time taking on the illusion of a a grizzled female sailor, her hat becoming a dewrag to keep dirty blonde hair back.

New disguise +24

Dismissing her invisibility, she starts to head down the ladder but does not descend its full length yet, instead hanging from the rungs and leaning off of it to address the crowd. Her voice sounds full of salt and rum- "Eyes! Git yer hide on deck and bring them folks wit ye that Sawbones wanted to see. Rest of ye stay down 'ere, bell means battle's brewing."

When the other family inevitably coughs, she turns her gaze towards them, pointing. "Ye got the cough? Come on then to the sickbay Sawbones 'as a brew that'll git that slime outta yer breathers. Git movin'."

Sath, tired now of trying to reason with people about to become hysterical and knowing that the quickest course out was likely the best, pushed forward through the crowd, leading the family while also drawing her scimitar simply as a warning for the other people in the hold not to bar his path...

Draw weapon as part of move action, no hostile moves- simply making her way to the upper decks with the family.

Evil GM

The people in the hold aren't paying any attention, (certainly not for the length need for diplomacy), when the new grizzled female enters from above.

The people step back at the drawn weapon muttering crude comments. There are a few daggers and weapons drawn form a few of the merchants. More for self defense than threat...initially.

Are you also shepherding the second family along.?

Astrianna curses under her breath as Sath draws a weapon. Damnit, Eyes...

Seeing how no one is paying attention to her any more, she simply waits on the ladder for the families to come up. As they begin to ascend the ladder so does she. When they crest the ladder she starts to move them along towards the officer's mess. "Come on, Doc's got a brew for ye and'll try an' fix yer breathers."

As they move onto the deck she points towards the officer's mess, taking the opportunity to whisper a Message to Dirk. We're outside. Her head turns to the families. "Git on in Sawbones is waitin'.

I assume the message is delivered to no-one, because Dirk is on the quarterdeck, but I'm operating on her current knowledge.

David is equally perplexed, then his eyes widen.

”Why, they’re right there, sir,” he says pointing at Sath and the family as they hurry forward from the hatch.

Indeed, Mister Saltblood had brought them aloft and seems to be rushing them to the “sick bay” as was promised, even while Astrianna was doing her best to mellow the crew at the same time; although Sath did have to intimidate a few passengers to get them out of the way.

”Please get them in the quarters quickly,” David says to Sath.

Then he looks at the captain.

”Is there anything else, sir?”

Okay - I'm a little confused as to what's going on here, so I'm doing my best to respond given the information I have. Given that the distance between the family and the quarterdeck is less then 60 feet (I think, based on where it looks like the hatches are), I'm thinking it shouldn't take more then 3 rounds to get them here (if they move at half speed for a double move, that is).

The only issue that might stop it is if there is a fight between Sath and the passengers. I don't know if that will happen, though - but I figure it would have happened before the captain had ordered me from the sick bay into to the quarterdeck, but it didn't seem to; so I'm guessing it didn't happen? But I don't know.

That said, I'm doing my best to play this by ear. I'm just a little confused as to what's up via time/distance. For now I'm hoping they're aloft and we're good to go. But I'm not sure, so I'm just making a guess.

If I'm wrong, let me know and I'll do what I can to remedy it.

M Gnome Expert/bard

The captain is concerned that there are four additional passengers. "Aye Sawbones if you have enough of that concoction to make them comfortable give it to them." He frowns. "Makes sure they are hydrated, then help Adriel and Bri get them in the rowboat that is going to get lowered." He clearly doesn't like the decision. "I'll have more food and water put in the boat while you tend to them." Seeing the concerned look on your face. "Some decisions are tough to make but I have many other souls on board that I'm responsible for."

He turns to the pilot, "Hard 15 degrees starboard, tack for wind, lower the starboard rowboat.

Astrianna slips away as the passengers are brought into the sick bay, going below deck for a moment and looking busy. When she is not observed she dispels her disguise, sighing and rubbing her temples. That could have gone so much better.

Walking back up onto deck, the bard looks out to the water while climbing to the quarterdeck. Three ships? I wonder if they're following us, or it's just a coincidence. Astrianna approaches Longplank, her face looking grim.

"Captain." She gets his attention, leaning down to whisper in the man's ear. "While transporting the infected, the sickest one coughed blood in the middle of the hold. There was nothing we could do. The passengers don't know what they have, but they know there is sickness aboard. They're tense, but the battle-bell kept them in the hold."

She finishes her report and looks to the starboard side, seeing the rowboat in the process of lowering. The pieces click quickly in her head. Effective, and as humane as you can get with the white plague....

M Gnome Expert/bard

Pinching the bridge of his nose he asks, "How tense and did it spread to the next deck of the ship?" His eyes shift to the crew; he observes a few suspicious eyes gaze from the rowboat to the quarter deck.

Baldwin, Bri:
Might be worth getting the crew to tie hankies around their mouths till that lot are in the longboat captain. They already suspect something and if they see us taking action in their interest it should keep everyone calm. Just a suggestion, Captain. I'll be wearing one when I put that lot into the boat.

Astrianna informs the captain- "Tense enough that Sath drew his weapon and shepherded the infected out."

Edit: forgot to answer one of the captain's questions

The half-elf sighs, looking sad. "Sorry captain, I couldn't calm them down much. They're worried, and they want to come up on deck. I don't believe word has spread to the lower deck and no signs of the sickness that Sath and I saw." She frowns as the order for cloths over faces to go out. Probably too late for me. I'll have to ask Hawkins to keep an eye on me to see if I begin to show signs.

The bard follows the captain over to the rowboat as it's lowered into the water, watching the sick go. I feel sorry for them- I doubt they asked for this. But it's better this way. The sickness won't spread as much.

Astrianna glances between Bri and Adriel, giving them both a nod. They easily notice that she appears more somber than her usual perky self.

She looks down at the captain. "Orders for me, sir?" The bard wishes to redeem herself, in some way.

David watches the procedure. His eyes are like gray ice.

He looks at the captain.

"The lot behind us will almost certainly examine that boat - when they see that the people are sick and coughing up blood it's very possible that they will kill them..."

He looks at the others.

"I do not think one more day will hurt this lot," he adds to the captain, gesturing to the rest of the people with a blunt thumb.

However, if the captain is adamant in his decision, David will not prevent it; instead he will obey the official orders of the captain in this matter and give them the remedy that Sath had helped him brew.

But it's clear he doesn't like it if that is indeed the final decision...

I'm assuming the captain doesn't change his mind. If that's the case, David will as if the captain wouldn't mind leaving the family a "Fishing Kit" or fishing supplies on the boat, too - just in case. Would that be acceptable? David will pay the cost out of his own pocket if necessary, recalling that these people were formally paying passengers.

He will also give them the rough distance, direction of the next port of call on a piece of paper that he jots down quickly.

Finally, given that there is a ship closing fast he'll help himself to a bow and arrows (does the weapons locker have a short bow; long bow; or crossbow on the ship) to help repel boarders.

He watches the folk with a strange light in his eye.

"May Nise watch over you all," he says to them with a tense voice.

M Gnome Expert/bard

"Can you inspire some work o better skills?" he comments to Astri.

He continues with everyone else. "We need the officer's mess disinfected and scrubbed. If you're not on the rigging, get this ship s+%~& and span clean folks." It's not an order to one person but an order to all.

Then to the his Henk."Quartermaster, I need you to lead a crew of 5 to the hold...get it scrubbed. Bring saps, just in case."

An interesting tale would be a good thing to distract oneself… Hmm…

He thinks a moment and he shrugs.

”I got a decent tale,” he says as he scrubs.

”So me and some lads were out in South Cheliax and we were running some supplies to this Halfling clan up in the hills.”

”Now the Imps weren’t too keen on us doing this thing, on account of the Halfling tribes were intent on busting up slavers, so they were hard after us.”

”Anyhow, we’re moving through the hills and we see this group of cavaliers coming riding up the path trying to track us.”

”Our plan was to try to shoot ‘em down with arrows; but there only about a score of us but there were about sixty cavaliers; even with the high ground the odds were piss-poor,” he adds, pausing to wipe his brow with the back of his arm.

”So we’re set to make our hit when one of the Halfling lads, William Banks his name was – but we all called him Billy – he decided to do something a little different.”

”See, Billy had just hit his thirty-third year three weeks back, which is a pretty special year for Halflings, and on his birthday the lads had a celebration for him with pies and beer and roast pig on a spit, you know – the usual… but one of the things they did at the end was one of the lasses was this magi who had a gift for fires – studied Evocation big time; so this magi lass had made Billy these little snapdragons and squibs and some little rockets that when you lit up flew into the sky like an arrow and burst into fire and sparks.”

”Gods damned loud, but it sure was pretty…” he says, pausing to take a drink from a waterskin.

”So the cavaliers are riding up hard on us, and Billy is nearby me and he’s all chuckling real quite-like, and I say to the lad – Billy, get your bow and quit with the laughing! David says with a grin.

”But he just dumps his kit out by his feet and sure enough if he didn’t have some of those gods damned firerockets in it,” he adds shaking his head.

”So he lights up the bits and points them all at the head of the cavaliers and suddenly lets them fly right at them!”

”Well the rockets hit the ground about ten paces from the first horse, but they’re just stuck in the mud smoking, not doing nothing. So the head rider holds up the column and hops off the horse and him and his backup move up to see what’s up.”

”So he gets up to the rockets – which, by the by, are still smoking but haven’t blown – and just as soon as he gets up to them they all blow up in their faces!” he says pausing to slap his thigh as he laughs out loud.

”But then the all the trees and bushes are burning and smoking and the horses are suddenly panicking and charging and the whole column breaks off and charges down the path and runs over the head rider who’s laying on the ground where the rockets are all blazing and smoking – and some of the Imps are getting tossed off the horses and there’s so much chaos that me and the lads barely realize that you couldn’t ask for a better time to open fire with the bows – so we did, and in all the confusion we managed to kill every one of those Imp basterds to the man!”

”So they’re all finished and we’re picking up the gear from the corpses and Billy steps up to the chief officer who’s hair is still smoldering from the fire and he looks up at us and say – Damn, I could really go for a smoke! he adds chuckling a little at the memory.

He looks up at the others and sees their reaction to the tale.

”It was pretty damn funny at the time… Well, I guess you had to be there,” he says with a wry grin.

EDIT: It looks like the Aid check worked - but I don't know if anyone heard the tale. I hope it's alright to mention rockets (I don't remember the deal with Black Powder stuff in this game). Last night I was just re-reading The Fellowship of the Ring last night and I felt inspired to write something fun :)

The captain shakes off the request, 'Nay...not today. Men have long work ahead to make port and plenty of scrubbing, rest will be precious. Get yours." He chews the rest of his cigar and just swallows the stub, you thought there was still an orange ember at the tip.

Bri smiles as Dirk tells his story. "It sounds like you had quite the time. I guess horses don't deal well with smoke and noise do they? I've never actually ridden on a horse before you know. Never really ad the chance to, I haven't spent more than a week at a time off of any ship since I been eleven."

"It's in Cheliax, so Asomodeus is The religion. It's a bustling large city built of nine forts. Heavy military presence. Prior to the Everwar, when Imperial Cheliax finally established a foothold on Garund (South continent), those forts previously repelled all attempts by the Garundi nations from pushing onto Avistan (North continent) via the Arch of Aroden."

One of the sailor stops, "I'll be damn'd y'were there, thought that was silly yarn told." The man says. Bounty...wasn't there? Was it 500 'undred or a 1000 gold?
