Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Healing, coming up!

Once Dravite and Hudak stop thrashing about, Alwyn digs out his healing wand. He also casts a couple of healing spells.

Hudak gets tapped with the wand and recovers 13 hit points. Dravite also gets tapped with the wand (restoring 12 hit points) and is also on the receiving end of a CLW (I burn Command) and recovers 10 more hp.

"What we want is down there - and we can't burn that." He looks over his fellow adventurers. "Ready? Let's find Aldern and his cursed acestors and put them all to the sword."

“What has happened? Alwyn, help them!”

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"It's psyc..physio..soc... Um, their minds are playing tricks on them. And, as you see, the mind is a powerful thing. I can heal them up with no problems, though."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

My. Mind is. Stroooooooooooooooooooooong!

Ready to do downstairs?

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Yeah; let's do it.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Move out!

The party heads down the stairs. You will need light sources.

The stairs end in a limestone cavern. The walls drip with moisture, and swaths of black and dark blue mold grow in spiraling, tangled patterns on the floor, ceiling, and walls. Bits of rubble and broken bones clutter the floor, and a rhythmic sound—as of the breathing of some immense creature—echoes through the cave from three tunnels, one to the north and two to the west. Of the two western tunnels, the southernmost one seems to be a relatively new creation.

Search, DC 15:

Spoiler:
You notice some worn runes carved in the walls as you descend.

If anyone made the above check, Knowledge (Religion) check, DC 15:

Spoiler:
The runes seem to be related to the goddess of undeath, Urgathoa. They look very, very old - certainly pre-dating the house above, possibly by millenia.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Missed the check. Vethran's got an Everburning torch, so we should be OK.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Missed the check as well.

Hudak sees things flickering in the shadows, imaginary phantasms. He's getting jumpy.

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

“Hudak, Dravite, what happened? What did you see? Are you hurt?”

Search:8+9 = 17

“There are some runes here,” says Elisile, running her hand over the wall, “carved into the stone. I do not recognize their meaning.”

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Knowledge (religion) 11+7=18.

"Huh. I missed those." Alwyn squints at the obscure text. "These runes are ancient, far older than this house. Seems like the the Foxgloves picked an uniquely terrible place to build their manor - these runes are associated with Urgathoa, the deity of undeath. The malign properties of this place might have driven the elder Foxglove to seek out lichdom."

His face splits in a sardonic smile. "Oh, and keep your eyes open for undead things. If course, we already knew that."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Good. Something that I can put honest steel into.

Me hook is thirsty fer somefin ta hook that donnae be a spectre or some filthy rodent. There's a reckonin' a'comin' an I'd be hatin' ta be against me on dis one.

OK - which way you going?

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"Any preferences for directions? I vote for the most recent-looking tunnel."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"That'll work." Sword out; I'm on it.

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

Elisile nods, holds her coin with the light spell aloft.

This long cave stinks of rotten meat. The source of the horrific smell is readily apparent in the swath of carcasses strewn about the floor of this place. Most seem to be of small animals and fish, but at least three humanoid bodies and one partially eaten horse lie in the mess as well. At the far end, there is a pool and a shaft leading up, wan sunlight shining through.

Spot, DC 16:

Spoiler:
In the shadows at the top of the cavern, two enormous bats hang from the ceiling. They gaze down at the party with feral relish.

“Ware! Giant Bats!” calls Elisile, pointing towards the ceiling of the cavern with her bow.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Spot roll 10
"Your elf eyes are better than mine, m'lady!"
Girding his sword for savagery...

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Spot 11+5=16.

"I see them. Big bastards, they are."

Male Dwarf Ranger/7 XP- 35674

1d20 7=22 Spot. Aye, I sees 'em lassie! Dravite steps in front of Elisile, protectively.

Initiative-1d20 7=16.
Dravite is planning on attacking by stepping forward, dropping his hook and drawing his bow to shoot if they don't swoop down.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Init (if needed) r12+2=14.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

It's probably needed. ;D. Init 11+1=12.

Yes, initiative is needed. Anyone who fails the Spot check is surprised this round.

HP 78/67, AC 26, T 14, FF 23, CMD 21 Performance 37/37 CHA DAMAGE: 5

Spot: 9-1 = surprise!

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard (Evoker) 9

Spot: 18 + 1 = 19. Init: 14 + 2 = 16.

Vethran raises his everburning torch instinctively and prepares for the attack. I'm probably at the back of the group.

Initiatives:

Dravite 16+

Hudak 14 (surprised)

Bats ?

Final init:
Bats 19
Dravite 16+
Vethran 16
Hudak 14 (surprised)
Alwyn 12
Elisile 10
Larken 7
Illes 5 (surprised)

It is a fairly simple cave, more a wide tunnel 15' by 30', with a ceiling sloping up and 20' at its top (where the bats are roosting). So its A-I across the top, 1-3 down the side. A-G/1-3 is the room, with a corridor at H-I/2. The pool is at A-C/1-3 - the floor essentially slopes down into it, and it has no particular impact on movement (it's fairly shallow). The hole in the roof is at A2, and the bats are roosting at A1 and A3. Place yourselves, please, lady and gentlemen (and Hudak) and let the bat-bashing commence!

The bats flex their wings, preparing to swoop.

Spot, DC 10:

Spoiler:
Their wings look holey and seemingly moth-eaten - perhaps these are more undead denizens of the Misgivings.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

I'll take F3.

“These bats do not appear natural creatures – more undead I believe,” calls Elisile.

position I2.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

gimme D2. Bring the bats!!! Bring the snorkelstirges!!! My blade hungers for battle....

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard (Evoker) 9

I'll take G2.

Male Dwarf Ranger/7 XP- 35674

H2. Is it Dravite's turn? Was that all the Bats did on their turn?

The bats haven't acted yet. Waiting for Illes position (and Larken's, if someone wants to do the honours) and then we are good to go.

HP 78/67, AC 26, T 14, FF 23, CMD 21 Performance 37/37 CHA DAMAGE: 5

F1 for me.

Larken is WAY out in front.....we like to call it the "Bat-bait" position....just joking. I would think he would be near Hudak but not right up front, maybe close behind and to the side? E1 or E2? looking for traps and such or other hazards."

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

I can run Larken, at least for now. Let's start him off in E1. Bring it, bats!

The bats swoop down and attack the nearest target - Hudak. However, even while surprised his reflexes are enough to avoid their teeth and claws except for a light scratch on his cheek.

Bats move to C1 and C3. Fort save, DC 13, or you are paralysed.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

r2....Hudak does the viagra dance.

Dravite.

Male Dwarf Ranger/7 XP- 35674

Dravite sees the big shoanti freeze up and strides forward angrily (D1) to attack one of the large bat-like creatures with his heavy hook of bat-death. 1d20 8=20 to hit, 1d12 5=15 damage. Add 2 damage to that if they are large-sized creatures, I am unsure by the description if they are just big or if they are rule-wise big. I'm a Big Game Hunter.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Fatespinner's sick, so I'll run Vethran this encounter.

Vethran waves his hands, and a ball of fire engulfs a bat.

No move. Using Fiery Burst in the C1 bat, which takes 9 pints of fire damage (Reflex 15 for half damage).

Alwyn throws himself at the other bat.

Charge to D3, attacking the C3 bat. Attack roll 13+2(charge)+7-3(power attack)=AC 19, damage 9+4+6(PA)=19. My AC's now 15.

Elisile's up.

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

Elisile moves to E3 and hurls a flask of holy water at the bat in C3.
18+5 = 23. Damage: 4

Dravite's hook gouges a lump out of the muzzle of one bat, but Alwyn's nimbly darts aside of his blow. Elisile's holy water causes bat flesh to smoke and seethe.

(Larken, then back to the top as Illes is surprised.)

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Larken dives between the bats, cartwheeling through the shallow water. As he comes to a stop, he plunges his rapier into the back of a bat.

Tumble to B3 - check 11+9=20. Attack roll 13+6+2(flank w/Alwyn)=AC 21, damage 5+3=8.

Bats again.

The bat the Larken attacked circles and slashes at him with a claw. 6 points of damage, and a DC 13 save to avoid paralysis. The other attacks Dravite, its needle-like teeth sinking ito his shoulder as it folds its wings about him. 5 points of damage, and the DC 13 save v paralysis.

For avoidance of doubt, these guys as Medium. Also, you get a saving throw on your inititative each round to recover from the paralysis (a bit like Hold Person) so you don't end up out of the fight due to one unlucky roll (like Hudak's). That re-roll doesn't count for the round in which you get stiffed (to paraphrase Heathy) so you will always lose at least one action.
