Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"Bah. Let's look at the other door."

There are two other doors - south east and west.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

west?

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"Sure. Kick it in."

I was thinking the SE door, but we'll take this one first.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

str 20 + 3=23.
I don't kick it, just kinda manhandle it gingerly.

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

We should be careful when we try the southern-most door; the rats came out of the south wall, so we might be walking into more of them.

Hudak gently rips the door off its rusted hinges. Although once a pantry, this room has become the filthy, reeking lair of what must be hundreds, if not thousands of rats. Swaths of fur cling to everything and mounds of rat droppings cling to the floor. Numerous cracks in the walls doubtlessly allow the rats that live here acces to a wide network of tiny tunnels beyond the basement walls. The rats here scamper but offer no belligerance.

(No other exits.)

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"Yuck. Last door, then."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

str chek r 13+3=16

The door is warped but otherwise opens fairly easily. A short corridor heads east before endind at another door. This one is iron, streaked with rust but otherwise formidable.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

STR CHECK R 15+3=18 ON THE IRON DOOR

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

If that does not work, perhaps Larken can pick the door lock?

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

Yes, I think this is the type of door that Larken might like to check for traps and pick locks. 18 and 8 unmodified if you want rolls.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"Yeah....could be secret stuff. Tell me when he's done and I'll kick the door in."

Larken finds no traps but the lock fails to fall for his seduction technique. Hudak's experimental kick also fails to do the trick.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Any other ideas? If not, back up stairs.
There's two doors I don't think we went to; the door east in the room we entered through the french windows, and a door south in the hallway south of that room. I say we backtrack to that east door in the first room, unless I'm confused and we've been through that door.

A bit wimpy, giving up on the first door to offer serious resistance....

Pappy always been sayin' "If'n thar be a door made by humans an' de door be tuff, be lookin' to de walls aboot de door. Humans be missin' dat ye can be choppin' through a bit o' plaster and lathe!" What say ye, Shoanti? Trough de wall?

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

I'll try around the edge of the door where (I assume--eff you, Benny Hill) the knob hooks to the wall with my handy dandy #1 anti-zombie weapon: crowbar.

r18+3(str)=21.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Aid another for Hudak's efforts to open the door: 11+2=13, so he can add 2 to his result.

The frame looks pretty tough too, though the plaster crumbles a bit with age as it is attacked.

Knowledge (Architecture & Engineering), DC 10 (anyone can try unchecked):

Spoiler:
You reckon you can probably batter the door down whith a bit of application as a group and a suitable battering ram.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

r5. "Somebody made this. It's not a natural cave. Too many ripe angels."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"Somebody.....with....secrets, by Korm. Or I'm an Aztlani."

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Roll 11+1=12.

"With a battering ram, this shouldn't be too hard. Did anyone see something that looked useful on the way in?"

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"How about Dravite? No? Let's go look. maybe chop down a tree outside if it comes to that."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"Maybe those bunks back there--there's maybe a big chunk of wood we could use?"
Hudak'll go back there, see if there's a couple sideboards that could be tied together and used as a battering ram.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"If that doesn't work, we can probably salvage a couple of beams from the burnt-out outhouse. I really want this thing opened."

Heading back, the party notice (again) the big table in the middle of the kitchen. After carrying it back to the corridor, and with a bit of time and effort (i.e. taking 20) the door finally buckles and gives way. However, it is clear that whoever built it seriously didn't want anyone getting in uninvited.

Once inside, this room looks to have once been some sort of arcane workshop, although little remains but broken glassware, shattered jars of pottery that contain dust and mould, and several rusty instruments and tools. A row of soggy books sits on the northern end of a workbench along the western wall. At the other end of the workbench, what looks like three iron birdcages sit, each containing a dead rat. To the east, two stained-glass windows loom. The northern window depicts a thin man with gaunt features drinking a foul-looking brew of green fluid, while the southern one shows the same man but in an advanced state of decay, as if he had been dead for several weeks. His arms raised and head thrown back in triumph, his rotting body turns to smoke and spirals into a seven-sided box.

There are two exits from the room - the one through which the party entered and a door in the south wall.

Knowledge (Arcana), DC 25:

Spoiler:
The windows depict someone's transformation into a lich.

Vethran:

Spoiler:
Vethran feels a sudden overwhelming urge to read the mouldering tomes in the shelves. Gingerly touching the rotting spine of one, he is suddenly consumed by a vision. He experiences the various stages the man depicted in windows, who you know as Vorel, went through in his quest to become a lich, from researching the works of previous liches, to gathering the components for the lich transformation potion, to building his phylactery, finally culminating in Vorel taking his potion and doubling over in agony as his body began to rot away. All of these visions disturbingly take place as if in a realm of animated stained-glass windows. As Vorel doubles over Vethran, or rather Kasanda, Vorel's wife, is filled with blinding shame that a loved one would do this to himself, followed by a burning rage that he must be stopped before he finishes his ritual. These visions take only a few seconds to occur; once they end, Vethran doubles over in an agony of anger.

Will save, DC 14. If you fail, you feel an overwhelming urge to rescue your children from their bedroom, and immediately flee at full speed back up the stairs to their room on the first (or second, depending on your perspective) floor.)

Vethran gently touches a book on a shelf, stares blankly in horror for little more than a second, and then doubles with a cry of pain.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"What's wrong? What did that secret stuff do?!?"

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

Arcana: 7+9 = 16.

Elisile looks about the room. “Notice the windows,” she says. “The seven sided box again. This imagery seems to suggest that Vethran was right in assuming it to be a liche’s phylactery.”

She turns to confer with Vethran on the arcane meaning of the features in the room (aid another?), but her words are interrupted by his cry of pain.

“What is it?” she asks, concerned.

What is the state of the rats in the cages? Skeletal or recently deceased? Do they appear diseased like the other ones?

(Fairly recently dead, though they are beginning to bloat.)

Know (Arc): 1d20+11=16

Will save: 1d20+6=21

Decided to use the Invisible Castle since I was actually at home. Yes, it's 4:30am at the time of this post and I have to work in the morning.

Vethran takes a moment to regain his composure. "He... Vorel... the man who must've lived here. He became a lich even though his wife and children still lived. He abandoned them. His wife was overcome with rage when she found out..."

He rests a hand on his heart, seeming to calm down from a fit of rage himself. "I am alright... for now. This place is possessed of potent spiritual residue."

Knowledge (History) DC 20 or Knowledge (Local) DC 20 (and you can get synergies and Assist Others with those two skills):

Spoiler:
You vaguely remember that Vorel Foxglove built this mansion, and disappeared under mysterious circumstances. He was Aldern's grandfather.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard (Evoker) 9

Know: Hist - 5 + 11 = 16. Man, I'm having some bad luck on these Knowledges. 2 assists will give me the 20, though.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Aid Another with Knowledge (history): 9+2=11, so Vethran can add +2 to his result.

Larken succeeds with a Knowledge (Local) assist roll, giving another +2.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard (Evoker) 9

The name 'Vorel' that Vethran mentioned stirs up some conversation until finally, after a bit of deliberation, Vethran has a revelation. "Vorel Foxglove! Aldern Foxglove's grandfather! It has to be the same person, he's the one who built this mansion! So... if Aldern's grandfather is a lich... then perhaps Aldern is not as he appears."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"So....he's a cool guy, and totally not a weirdo?"

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"That might be stretching it too far. But it might not be particularly surprising that he turned out a strange one." Alwyn turns to the other door that leads out of the workshop. "Something tells me this is the door we were searching for. Can someone (i.e. Larken) search it for traps? It probably leads somewhere the builder really didn't want anyone else to go."

Larken finds no traps and the door is unlocked. In the room beyond, piles of broken stone, dirt, and a few ruined pickaxes line its edges. The floor in the middle of the room has been torn up to reveal an ancient set of stone spiral stairs, obviously of much older construction than the surrounding basement, winding deep into the bedrock below. A foul stink, like that of rotten meat, wafts up on a cold breeze from the darkness.

Everyone, Will saves, DC 13. If you fail:

Spoiler:
As you enter this room, you experience a sudden vision of Aldern, sweaty, filthy, and wild-eyed, digging away at the stone floor of this room with a pickaxe. With each swing, he grunts out two words: “For you.” You know that Aldern is speaking of you, or rather, of Larken. As the vision ends, Aldern breaks through into the room beyond. As he stoops, pulling back the broken flags, the reaching claws of a horde of shrieking ghouls rise up to pull him into the darkness below. Others boil forth, and they turn their lambent eyes to you.

Another Will save, DC 16. Let me know if you failed this one.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Aubrey:

Spoiler:
I failed both. In fact, I rolled a 1 on the second wil save.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard (Evoker) 9

Will save: 13 + 6 = 19.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Will save 4+7=11. Second Will save 13+7=20.

hp 87 of 87; effects active: mage armour (AC 22); gravity bow, flame arrow Female Elf Wizard (Transmuter) 6 / Ranger 1 / Eldritch Knight 4

Will save: 11+4 = 15 (17 vs enchantment effects)

Larken saved, so just waiting for Dravite and Illes.

If you failed the first Will saving throw but made the second:

Spoiler:
You shake off the vision, and it swiftly fades to nothingness.

If you failed the second Will saving throw:

Spoiler:
The ghouls reach out for you, latching on and tearing and biting at your flesh. You experience terrible agony as rents are opened in your flesh by the hungering horde.

You take 19 points of damage. Also, make a Fortitude save, DC 16. Let me know if you fail that....
