Background Updated:
From the time he was 10 years old, people looked to Valerio for safety. It was his size mostly, but also the quiet calmness that seemed to exude from him. He can count on one hand how many times he actually had to get physical with people, despite his profession as a caravan guard. The men who witnessed such events speak as if he were a living legend, but always in whispered tones, and never in front of Valerio.

Valerio never wanted any trouble with anyone. If left to his own devices, he'd probably just settle down in one of Varisia's larger (safer) cities. In fact that's what he planned to do ever since he had laid eyes on Ticaria. They met on the road when she was still a young maiden. He guarded a caravan she had booked passage to Egorian with, and like many men before and since, fell hopelessly for her.

Ticaria quickly seized the opportunity and became close. She saw in Valerio a kind of nobility she, until then had never come across in men. He made her feel safe, which was a foreign feeling to her. Orphaned at a young age and boarded in a finishing school for young aristocrats, Ticaria excelled at singing, and also played the harp. She planned to woo a noblemen in Egorian, one that would hopefully let her continue her career as a performer.

For the next 2 years, Valerio relished every chance he got to be in or near Egorian. Being a full blooded Varisian, he wasn't able to see her at all her venues. Ticaria would go to him however, whenever a suitor got to close or (heaven forbid) became rough. These circumstances always ended badly for Valerio, becase Ticaria didn't attract average men. She was the most beautiful maiden in the city, and the envy of several powerful Chelaxian bachelors. Only through his uncanny street senses, and a bit of Desna's good blessings, did Valerio manage to keep his neck out of a noose.

Unfortunately, Ticaria's good luck ran out, as her coquetting attracted a suitor from within house Thrune. Petronicus Thrune's cruelty had earned him the moniker "fiend hearted". He certainly didn't love Ticaria, he simply decided that she'd be his. Her chosen career was laughably out of the question. Terrified Ticaria ran to Valerio and pleaded her love for him. She agreed to marry right away, and suggested leaving Cheliax behind.

That night, after the vows, and their consumation, the Road's End inn grew unnaturally quiet. Valerio had taken every percaution he could think of, but hell always finds it's man. Bound by sorcery, and in the company of fiends, he was forced to watch as his beautiful bride was beaten to death. Her blood curtling screams, and Petronicus's learing grin shattered Valerio's mind, and forever scarred his memories of happiness.

"When will you Varisian's ever learn your place, hmmm?"

Valerio was sentenced to life in prison for the contract killing of Ticaria Starweather, and conspiring against house Thrune. He rots at the bottom of a Chelish prison where he is assaulted nightly be all manner of devils eager to collect his soul in exchange for revenge. So far, his prayers to Desna have kept him strong, so he refuses the fiendish temptations thrust at him. As time drags on however, his memories of Ticaria's screams, and Petronicus's sneers weigh heavily upon him.

Updated his feats, ability scores, and skills to this campaign. Green light him, and I'll finish the rest.

Shadow Lodge

Valerio looks great, forgive me for not wanting to issue guaranteed 'you're in's at this point but i'd definitely encourage you to finish the rest.

Recrunched a bit and finally caught up on the story. Working on background now and still need to spend coin on the mundane odds and ends.

Valerio has been fully updated, and is ready for review. Please let me know if I need to make any changes. If you like, I can provide you with his feat progression up to 14th lvl or so.

Shadow Lodge

-Valerio Human Fighter (Cad)
-Sicsivicus Aasimar Paladin
-Gunser Human(?) Magus (Tovenaar)

Valerio, Sicsivicus (must fight urge to just call you Sissy), Gunser, hop into Discussion and say hullo.

We still have one place open, so I won't start Gameplay either until it is filled or until 3 days have passed, in which case we'll continue until some interested soul posts an application.

Liberty's Edge

Not interested in Jelani?

Shadow Lodge

Damnation; I'm very sorry Jelani, somehow I had it in my head that Valerio was your character.

All four places full now :) Head in and say hullo.

Liberty's Edge

Yay! I was gonna be sad.

Shadow Lodge

Okay, so I finally remembered how to get in. So how do I RTJ here?

Shadow Lodge

"Character Creation rules:
26 point buy, no starting attributes above 16 after racial modifiers
By this point, the existing characters have reached 2nd level, and that is what you will be starting at.
Any Race from Chapters 1-3 of the advanced race guide is allowed, but no customs.
Any paizo class or archetype is allowed, so basically everything on d20pfsrd.com that is specifically not listed as 'third party'.
instead of the bonus attribute point every 4th level, you recieve a bonus buy point every level. this is already included into your 1st level point buy.
Humans get +2 to a second attribute of their choosing, but cannot choose dual talent.
Starting gold is going to be a little unusual. You will have found an old safehouse for the Eight, and it has stocks of items and gold. Since that discovery, the characters have been on a shopping trip. This, you have:
-3000 gold to spend on mundane items, ones not too unique to your character (no spending 500gp to get your mother's hand-carved desk, for instance)
-1000 gold to spend on whatever you want.
Alignment wise, preferably Good or Neutral. The key point is that your character a. Wants to stick it to Cheliax and b. Will work fairly well with the party."

This should help.

Another slot open??

Shadow Lodge

Yes, one of the characters who responded to the roll call seems to have dropped out.

Mind a little competition, Sakura? Assuming Heterocephalus is interested

Hahaha I am interested but if the slot is already promised to her then I will let her take it.

Shadow Lodge

I don't know if you'd call it competition, since I'm still getting used to this format. :D

So, something like this?

Mirrendier ElfBlood:

Sometimes you just know you're different.

Mirrendier was born a Drow, raised a Drow, and forced to do Drow things. But he never really liked it. It just seemed to him that cruelty, backstabbing, and destruction was no way to expand the Kingdom. No one outside of his family knew such things, of course; but in his family he was called ... "elf-blood".

"Not really Drow".

One day he was assigned to a raid on the surface world. The raid went well enough, but Mirrendier found himself separated from the others. Downed by a human arrow, he was left for dead by both sides. He awoke to find himself being cared for by an elderly human woman.

He learned a few things about the surface world from her. He learned a few human songs from her. He enjoyed her tea and her company. But he did not have long to enjoy his time. Cheliax goons came by and took her away. "Tax evasion" they said. They never looked in the house, so they never found him. One would think that "tax collectors" would be smart enough to look for wealth -- to confiscate it for "taxes".

So Mirrendier called their bluff, took the guards by surprise, and freed the old lady. But there was a price to be paid. He was imprisoned for a myriad of "crimes against the state".

It was just like home ... except that these "humans" weren't as subtle about things as the Mistress was.

-----------

Male Drow (Noble Blood) Wizard
Eventually will be an Eldritch Knight
Alignment: Neutral Good

Key notes: Always uses a total disguise (including a full Mask). Depending on how the group operates, this is "unless his identity as one of the Eight should be known".
Loves to sing. He's hardly "bard" quality, but he is something of an entertainer.
Completely new to the surface world, and so will sometimes say/do "naive" things.

what is already on the team?

Don't wanna duplicate.

Shadow Lodge

Not promised.

We have-

-Magus
-Alchemist
-Paladin
-Bard/Fighter
-Fighter
-Barbarian

Shadow Lodge

Sakura, are you referring to This (left hand side)?

If so then that is too overpowered for this game.

No, I'm referring to this. I stayed away from any and all Monster entries for him.

Shadow Lodge

Ah great.

Hmm as long as you promise not to have it constantly running, the feat looks okay.

Arkwright wrote:

The Magus is without spells. Worth saying.

And we've a Witch.

As I recall, it does require some token of effort to use. :D But, mostly it was for access to the racial feat tree. Take a look at that; if it's a problem I can always switch it out with

something else:
Weapon Finesse. (I decided that his bonded object is going to be a Rapier; he'll eventually be a "finesse" type fighter)

I can say that none of us have a mount. In fact, the only animal in the group as far as I know is our witch's familiar. And, being that we're in the city most of the time, I'm not sure how useful a mount would really be.

No cleric? I can consider a cleric monk or oracle life.

Shadow Lodge

@Toranoko- Yeah I wouldn't recommend getting a mount, our secret hideout doesn't have a stable or anything.
Hmm. I'll admit I have issues with the 'detect magic constant' for Greater Drow Nobility, but it'll take awhile for you to get that one so we can sort it out then.
Character sheet looks pretty good.

@DM Heterocephalus- Hmm a cleric could be useful; I'd recommend not going with life oracle, at low levels they just aren't much fun.

Liberty's Edge

Do an oracle of the heavens with all the color spray cheese Heterocephalus :P We're currently trying to take down a network of gangs, so most of our opponents are humanoid (for the time being). I've also had fun with archer clerics of Sarenrae who have the fire domain. It's like being a blaster-healer, but doesn't get really fun until like level 5+.

I'm the barbarian by the way.

Wow Jelani I would never have guessed you are Dm Jelani just from your nick :P.

I got this crazy idea to do a Nagaji Draconic bloodline sorcerer with claws to engage in melee lol!

Hmmm let me check out the oracle heavens.

Liberty's Edge

They have a revelation that lets them scale up Color Spray past five HD. So basically if you pump your Cha and take the appropriate spell focuses, you have a really good AOE save or suck that lasts into decently high levels. And then later you can take Heighten spell and prepare it as a higher level spellslot to make the save DC even higher. I mean, like all one trick ponies, there are things it won't work on, but then you still have all your other spells to play with. Long as you can keep your charisma maxed it should work until like 15h level or something (depending on what you're fighting).

This is the revelation:

Awesome Display (Su): Your phantasmagoric displays accurately model the mysteries of the night sky, dumbfounding all who behold them. Each creature affected by your illusion (pattern) spells is treated as if its total number of Hit Dice were equal to its number of Hit Dice minus your Charisma modifier (if positive).

Edit:Jelani was my first Pathfinder character ever. Now you know the secret of my name. Even after all these years and splatbooks, he can still smash with the best of 'em.

Shadow Lodge

-It is quite nice; also applies to the other Pattern spells Heavens oracles get later.

-He really can smash well; took out half of my synthesist npc's health in one blow.

Alright I done the skeletal layout.

Its a Vishkanya dual cursed Oracle of Heavens.

A little bonkers to the head with Haunting and legalistic curse, she vows to fulfill promises to random strangers or teammates everyday.

Follower of Desna.

She dresses like a clown and blows a blowgun with the Vishkanya Sleep venom.

Let me know what you think is it too crappy.

Ohhhh sorry. Well look at my spoiler again. adjusted it. You mentioned no stats can be above 16? Thus my charisma is 16 and I lower strength to put into Int for brew alchemy so I can create poisons.

Shadow Lodge

More specifically questioning why you have such a high strength and relatively low charisma.

Liberty's Edge

For the save or suck thing to work well, your charisma should be 18. Other stats basically don't matter. I would probably go with a high dex and con, 'dumping' Str and Wis. That way you're hard to hit, have decent HP and you can just lay down the spells. Your saving throws will all be good as well. You can also throw a shield in there for even more AC.

Maybe do Str 10, Dex 16, Con 16, Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 18

You'll be s+++ in melee, but have plenty of spells and your blowgun.

AC with a shield would be 22, not too shabby for a level 2 character.

At third level you can pick up Spell Focus (Illusion) to make them 10% more likely to get knocked out by your color spray.

I wanted 18 but I thought the creation rules states than no ability can be higher than 16.

"Character Creation rules: 26 point buy, no starting attributes above 16 after racial modifiers By this point, the existing characters have reached 2nd level, and that is what you will be

Liberty's Edge

Well then Jelani's illegal as well. I think it's supposed to be before racial modifiers?

After racial modifiers ... Definitely after.

Still here ... Still thinking / working.

Greater doesn't come 'tll minimum 5th level ... And I have other feat requirements there if I'm to make my prestige class. More realisticly it'll be closer to tenth, if not later. Ironically, I was concerned about the Noble Spell Resistance, but being that it's not available till high level, I guess it doesn't matter. (?)

In another game, one of my GMs mentioned how there are always extra feats to play with in Pathfinder ... I never seem to have that problem. Like, I would like to pusue the Crossbow Mastery tree with this one ... But I don't see that happening.

Hmm Thak can confirm before or after? Also do we have traits and what about HP?

Shadow Lodge

It does say 'after' racial modifiers. I agree the creation rules are weird but they're the ones everyone built their characters too and it would be unfair to change them.

Two traits, max HP for first level average thereafter.

Toranoko, I wouldn't plan it out too far ahead- not meaning to cast doubt on how this game will go, just saying that most PBPs rarely advance beyond a handful of levels, so I wouldn't stress too much about feat trees in the future and try and concentrate on the current levels.

in that Case I will stick to my submission.

Is slots for this still open??

Shadow Lodge

Still open, though we've got two very good candidates thus far may be hard to compete.

Also, fellows, after some discussion we've decided to institute a new point buy scheme

-Stats can't be higher than 18 (before racial modifiers)
-27 point buy

End of line.

Right. Still not used to this format ... obviously. Can't even keep my Avatars straight! *lol*

Yeah, I've been playing PbP (though not on this board) for well over a decade, and I have yet to see a d20 character level. But on the off chance that it does happen, I'd rather not screw myself in advance.

Speaking of which, I forgot to add my preferred class bonus, which for me is always skill points. Given that he's Drow, I should probably put it in Intimidation (background skill) ... but is there something else that the group needs ATM?

Biggest problem right now is spending the 5k on "mundane" equipment. The 1k will go to a "bag of holding, minor"; not the foggiest how to spend that much without blowing it on a Mount. *lol*

I'm going to leave the attribute selection "as is" I think, though I would like some clarification on how this whole "point buy at levels" thing works. After further research, I think I'm going to try the "Monk(Sohei)/Wizard" Eldritch Knight. It's a bit weaker than other combos, but it's in character for him -- and seems more in keeping with the campaign.

So, yeah, other than a promised "backgrounder" (extra story) and some calculations, I think I just have to figure out how to spend that money. *lol*

Oh, for the record: while I've been gaming "for freakin' ever", I'm relatively new to Pathfinder. Like when one of the PCs said he'd been DMing for 33 years I thought "hmmm ... that's pretty close to my time as well". 'Course now I can't keep my systems straight ... *lol*

For the spending of that 5k, remember that special materials are technically non-magical, and seem to count as 'mundane' for this purpose. I got some Wyroot and some kind of leaf-based armor.

The point buy as I understand it is this: Every level, you get another 1 (one) build point. Accumulate it or spend it. Obviously, lower stats go up sooner, and dumpstats are quick to fill in. Bumping your uber stat requires patience.

Ah, thanks Gunser. That's particularly appropriate for a Sohei archetype, though I will need to accumulate quite some points to be able to cast higher level spells. :D

Okay, the backgrounder. Enjoy!

Mirrender Elf Blood Backgrounder:

(“Rickety-Tickety-Tin”; words and music by Tom Lehrer)

“About a maid I'll sing a song ……… sing rickety tickety tin
About a maid I'll sing a song who didn't have her family long
Not only did she do them wrong,
She did very one of them in! them in, she did every one of them in!”

“And when at last the police came by……… sing rickety tickety tin
And when at last the police came by her little pranks she did not deny
For to do so she would have had to lie, and lying she knew was a sin!
a sin! lying she knew was a sin!”

“My tragic tale I won't prolong……… sing rickety tickety tin
My tragic tale I won't prolong and if you do not enjoy my song
You've yourself to blame if it's too long, you should never have let me begin, begin ,
you should never have let me begin!”

Mirrendier’s rich baritone boomed out over the “audience”, finishing the song he had learned from the old lady that took him in not that long ago. Now, here he was, taken in again by humans – this time it was an … what was it humans called this place? Oh, yes an “orphanage”. The “audience” was the children and the few workers that cared for them. They didn’t get much entertainment here, so even one such as he was welcome.

Such places did not exist where he was from. When a child had no parents, it was either taken in by family or left to its own devices. Usually it was the latter. But here on the surface world there were some that took in the lesser fortunate, and he found that distinctly refreshing.

Mirrender had helped out a bit, using cantrips to help with the cleaning and to flavor the otherwise bland food. It wasn’t much, really -- practically nothing in fact – but they seemed to appreciate it.

“Now let’s all say thank you.”

Her name was Mirriam, a young attractive human who grew up here and now took her turn looking after the orphans the surface society had discarded. She was both pleasant and genuinely polite – a very nice combination of traits.

The children started to say their “thank you”’s when they were interrupted. A young man – a teenager he was called – ran in from the street, out of breath.

“They’re looking for you!” he said, trying to talk through his gasping, “the guards are looking for you!”

Gasps came up from the small crowd. This too was unusual, for here in the surface world most would kill him on sight.

Three days. He had managed to spend three days here. The guards here were sloppy.

“What are we going to do?” asked a small child. “What will the guards do?”

Mirrender laughed at the question.

“That’s one of the things I love about surface dwellers – no concept of treachery!”

Oh, there were some that thought they were good at treachery, but none of them compared to the treachery and politics of the underworlds where the elders would spend decades or centuries on their schemes.

“You will tell them I was here, and which way I went.”

Mirriam looked at him, her eyes probing him for more information.

“And when they ask what I was after, you will tell them ‘a duet’.”

“A duet?”

Mirrender flicked his hands, messing up Mirriam’s clothing and hair. It wasn’t much, but it would do. These guards were obviously not very perceptive .

“A duet.”

The guards burst in, looking about the room. They pointed in unison to the place that hooves were retreating.

“And what did he want with you?” the chief guard (who had obtained his position from “family connections”) asked. Mirriam blushed as the children all cried out “a duet!” Appalled, the guards left in hot pursuit of Mirrender.

“Mirriam?” a five year old asked. “Why are the guards so worried about a song?”

Making his Bonded Rapier Adamantium did come to mind, but that's still only 3k (+ the cost of the Rapier). And he's not going to wear armor, so ... I dunno. I'll figure something out. :D
