From the time he was 10 years old, people looked to Valerio for safety. It was his size mostly, but also the quiet calmness that seemed to exude from him. He can count on one hand how many times he actually had to get physical with people, despite his profession as a caravan guard. The men who witnessed such events speak as if he were a living legend, but always in whispered tones, and never in front of Valerio.
Valerio never wanted any trouble with anyone. If left to his own devices, he'd probably just settle down in one of Varisia's larger (safer) cities. In fact that's what he planned to do ever since he had laid eyes on Ticaria. They met on the road when she was still a young maiden. He guarded a caravan she had booked passage to Egorian with, and like many men before and since, fell hopelessly for her.
Ticaria quickly seized the opportunity and became close. She saw in Valerio a kind of nobility she, until then had never come across in men. He made her feel safe, which was a foreign feeling to her. Orphaned at a young age and boarded in a finishing school for young aristocrats, Ticaria excelled at singing, and also played the harp. She planned to woo a noblemen in Egorian, one that would hopefully let her continue her career as a performer.
For the next 2 years, Valerio relished every chance he got to be in or near Egorian. Being a full blooded Varisian, he wasn't able to see her at all her venues. Ticaria would go to him however, whenever a suitor got to close or (heaven forbid) became rough. These circumstances always ended badly for Valerio, becase Ticaria didn't attract average men. She was the most beautiful maiden in the city, and the envy of several powerful Chelaxian bachelors. Only through his uncanny street senses, and a bit of Desna's good blessings, did Valerio manage to keep his neck out of a noose.
Unfortunately, Ticaria's good luck ran out, as her coquetting attracted a suitor from within house Thrune. Petronicus Thrune's cruelty had earned him the moniker "fiend hearted". He certainly didn't love Ticaria, he simply decided that she'd be his. Her chosen career was laughably out of the question. Terrified Ticaria ran to Valerio and pleaded her love for him. She agreed to marry right away, and suggested leaving Cheliax behind.
That night, after the vows, and their consumation, the Road's End inn grew unnaturally quiet. Valerio had taken every percaution he could think of, but hell always finds it's man. Bound by sorcery, and in the company of fiends, he was forced to watch as his beautiful bride was beaten to death. Her blood curtling screams, and Petronicus's learing grin shattered Valerio's mind, and forever scarred his memories of happiness.
"When will you Varisian's ever learn your place, hmmm?"
Valerio was sentenced to life in prison for the contract killing of Ticaria Starweather, and conspiring against house Thrune. He rots at the bottom of a Chelish prison where he is assaulted nightly be all manner of devils eager to collect his soul in exchange for a chance at revenge. So far, his prayers to Desna have kept him strong, so he refuses the fiendish temptations thrust at him. As time drags on however, his memories of Ticaria's screams, and Petronicus's sneers weigh heavily upon him.
