Okay folks. We're all here, but before we can start playing, we must get a few things sorted out. First, as you all recall, you have no gear. However, you spell caster types do get all your necessary equipment (spell books, component pouches, etc.)
The other thing we must iron out is exactly how we're going to start this. Diamond Lake is a mining town well known for being a shanty town. Mostly the likes of criminals, has-beens, and any other washed up people reside here. It's really the only place to work, as the mine owners in town will hire anyone, regardless of their backgrounds. Corruption is well known, but not much is done about it. There are two types of people in Diamond Lake: those with nowhere to turn and those who have come to exploit them.
What we need to do is bind you five together. It doesn't need to be a strong connection right away, but hopefully a bond will form and things will begin to roll. The overall goal before starting is to get all of you interested in investigating (or getting dragged along in an investigation of) the local cairns in the area. There are plenty of different cairns dotting the country side north of Diamond Lake and rumors tell of traps, ghosts, or even wondrous treasures within. In fact, a small adventuring group from Magnimar has just arrived in town and has announced their intent to do a delve of their own.
We have two Shoanti in our midst, a follower of the Dawnflower, a wizard, and a burgular. Having the Shoanti meet and join up feels a bit obvious, but how do we get everyone else in on the plan?
Derrick Tramsen |
Derrick isn't cut out for basic village life, nor work in a mine. He wants excitement, and also money. Even the rumors of traps and treasures would draw his attention... He's likely walking around town trying to pick up rumors on anyone heading out that way (and rumors in general).
Nitavesha Cindersnake |
Cindersnake is in Diamond Lake at the guidance of her spirit friends after being assaulted by vivid visions, so I'm sure a motivation to check out some of the cairns could be conveyed to her as one of the reasons she is even in this spirit-forsaken town of tshamek, even if Shoanti don't usually like to mess with sacred burial sites. I'm not sure what clan Ulfak is part of (Moon Clan for the wolf?) but Shoanti meeting up in a foreign place or during a pilgrimage will usually flock together over the company of only tshamek so that should take care of us two. If when asking around about the cairns, they are told to be riddled with traps, monsters, and/or undead, I'm sure the expertise of a professional burglar, a learned wizard, and someone who follows the Sun Maiden would be highly sought after additions for any treks into these burial chambers.
Though this might all come down to a question: is there an event ingame that explains us showing up in a obviously dangerous town with nothing but the proverbial clothes on our backs?
Ulfak Niarka |
How about a soup kitchen? Of Sarenrae. Belonging to a once-wealthy philanthropist called Salomon Reive. A bard with old connections to the thieves guild making it an ideal haven for someone like Derrick to lay low.
Ulfak could be supplying the odd bits of meat and vegetable using his scavenging and survival skills. Meeting a hungry barbarian here would be a given, especially when Nitavesha is a shoanti. Someone who could help hunt and forage.
A follower of Sarenrae would be able to volunteer here.
That leaves Vedic the crackpot who is best avoided. Where else would he eat?
And best of all a bard would be willing to talk of stories, like cairns and ruins. Surely people in a soup kitchen are looking for that score, a fabulous treasure trove to turn their desperate lives around and give each of them the opportunity to get whatever it is they truly want?
Maybe the bard could "fund" such an expedition and help gather a few adventurers for a fee. By fund I mean provide a few simple weapons and supplies...
I am sure you guys can build something decent out of that. Go for it.
Cheers
Valsaya Ortuso |
Well, Valsaya certainly does not feel at ease in Diamond Lake for the time being. She's only an interpretation removed from being destitute, so if word of this small Magnimar adventuring group reaches her ears, her interest might be piqued into assisting them, especially since they're from her home city.
At the very least it would give her something constructive to do. And if said adventuring group isn't keen on accepting help from a young woman, unarmed and unarmored, maybe she would still pursue the exploration of these mysterious cairns, she'd just have to turn to other people.
On a side note, would it be okay if I switched around my constitution and dexterity scores (14 con -> 14 dex)? I've been looking at my possible bonus teamwork feats and Precise Strike would be a good option for my first one at lvl 3, but it has a pre-requisite of 13 dex (If allowed, I'll probably switch my favored class bonus to a hitpoint so I'm still at 10 hp).
Valsaya Ortuso |
The soup kitchen idea seems pretty good to me, I can go with that. Valsaya could work as a volunteer there, and it could act as a haven for all the street rumors. Word of an adventuring party intending on a delve into the cairns would certainly reach here.

I rather like the soup kitchen idea as well. Is everyone up for that?

Yeah, go ahead.
Valsaya Ortuso |
Thanks, changes made! I now have 14 dex and 12 con, and I've switched my favored class bonus to an extra hitpoint, dropping the spellcraft skill for now.

So I can start with a spell component pouch and a holy symbol? I'll need those for three of my spells.

Sure can.
Ulfak Niarka |
In answer to your earlier question I reckon Ulfak is from the Moon Clan. They are close enough to the orcs for him to be the result of a raid and their beliefs most closely match his persona.
Being an orcblood and a shaman of travel sets him apart enough to make him a lone wolf. One willing to accompany other shoanti like Nitavesha for the pleasure of the journey. Although they may not want his company.
Derrick Tramsen |
I'm down with the soup kitchen. Derrick would probably end up eating there, and it may well bring down his stealing tendencies, since most of the people going there probably wouldn't have much coin to take. He's a bit of a man-for-hire, so he'd be willing to run errands or otherwise help out if there were even a little pay (or just food, water, and a place to sleep).
Nitavesha Cindersnake |

You've already got two checks in the plus column compared to just about everyone outside the Storval Plateau:
1) You're Shoanti. Check.
2) You're not tshamek. Check.
Bonus Points) You're a shaman. Check.
Being that Nitavesha is from the most racist of the clans, even if I'm gonna play her a smidge more tolerant of others of odd nature due to growing up with a disability, she still would find even the most repugnant or crude Shoanti far better company than anyone else in Diamond Lake.
And anyone who tries to get seconds at the soup kitchen before everyone has had a bowl gets a boxing of the ear.
Derrick Tramsen |
Hey, I just realized something (Mostly because in that first post, I really gave the character some life).
Derrick is a bit of a foulmouthed young man, and one who's grown up hard and fast. As such, he'll be injecting his language and thoughts with rather... flavorful phrases. You've gotten an idea of it in that first post. As such, I'd like to check with everyone that nobody minds. I know some people aren't happy when that sort of thing goes on, and while I plan to stick to the boards' PG-13 setting, I just want to make sure I'm not offending anyone. I can spoiler anything rotten, if people would prefer.

French Wolf |
I am fine with the language. Ulfak too. He only gets angry if wolves are treated badly, of course.
Me I have a son with tonsillitis and daughter probably the same by tomorrow. donato, just so you know, I look after her all day Monday and then go to work until late. I'll try to post during the day but it may be a little terse.
The rest of the week my evening are free so game on!
Cheers

Knives. Lots of 'em.
Actually, a short sword or rapier would be useful. For ranged, either daggers for throwing, or a shortbow/crossbow.
Armor needs to be flexible. Leather or masterwork studded--I'm not looking for anything that'd cause armor check penalties.
Ulfak Niarka |
Masterwork studded! Right then Ulfak would like +1 dragonhide, preferably red. Thanks Derrick - you made me smile.
You taking the thieves tools/alchemists fire etc backpack, Derrick?
Climbing one for Nitavesha?
Writing one for Vedic?
That leaves the inquisitor one with the surgical/healing kit backpack? Not ideal but like the man said we will be dipping into each others stuff.
GM donato is some of this from the equipment guide?
I've noticed that there isn't many of us with heal skill, i.e. not many at all. Ulfak will take that at next level to help rectify that.
Cheers

Yeah, everything can be found in Ultimate Equipment. Feel free to scour the PRD for any relevant info. As for heal, don't worry about the skill that much. Anyone with a decent Wis will be able to cover it untrained.

You know, I always forget that rogues benefit from a good Wisdom score so they can, you know, FIND traps. Good thing the dice roller gave me a good one this time.
