Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Keildrithe continues to peer cautiously over the wall at the oncoming foes, gently humming a lullaby in the process...

Casts lullaby, and keeps concentrating/holding the spell until the attackers are within 130 feet, ideally targetting an area where the density of soldiers will be greatest (and favouring high density areas in which Atrek finds himself), and preferring to target those at the back of a group... if that makes sense...

The warriors out on the plain hurry forward, although the terrain and the low lighting conditions seem to impede their progress somewhat.

The enemies out on the plain make it about a third of the way towards the base of the hill. Still no sign of the nearer archers at this point.

Round 3:

Laithe casts a spell on himself and begins to move stealthily a short way down the hill on the western side.

Kajetan also casts a spell on himself.

Pharris moves to the south east part of the wall, looking out towards the rider who is a fraction over 400 feet away as the arrow flies.

Anybody else doing anything at this juncture?

The trapdoor doesn’t appear to be locked, but there is no obvious way of opening it – no handle or pull ring or anything like that, just a small slot along one side. It looks like perhaps it is designed to be opened using a crowbar or poker or something to lever the stone slab up.

Once outside the wall, Laithe tries once more to find spot where the archers may have gotten to.

Spot check 13 + 9 = 21.

NIcholai saves his spells. For sooner rather than later from the looks of it! ;P

NIcholai peeks over the wall, then immediately ducks down again.

IC seems to be down, no Perception roll for me!

He can't help but grin at the sight of Kajetan pulling out a bottle of alcohol.

"That's the spirit!" He quips with a raised eyebrow. "I don't suppose anyone here is carrying a crowbar? I seem to be woefully ill-prepared for dungeon exploration." He hisses softly.

Nicholai frowns as he peeks over the wall. "Downright rude bunch if you ask me." He grumbles softly, then shouts out over the wall once more,...

"Haloo?! Do you understand?! No Havee any thingee worth takee!! PLease stop shooting at me!" He cries.

NIcholai winks at kaj with a smart aleck grin, obviously pleased with himself. He makes a calming motion at Pharris' frustrated outburst. Then furrows his brow,

"How Do they know for certain that your here?" He mutters. Then, on instinct, looks UP.

IC still down, please roll spot check for me, looking for Altrek's bird!

Busy this weekend, (ONE more dance show!) So probably won;t be available till Monday.

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Keildrithe maintains a quiet focus on his spell, humming his lullaby like a mantra until he believes his foes are close enough to be affected by it.

Kajetan looks at the trap door in the gloom, "erm... no handle guys, I am not going to be able to lift that." he looks round for any one free to do it in his place, some of the wind knocked out of his sails.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Quick as a flash, Pharris shouts over, "checks the horse bags, there may be a stone remover, like a hook."

Pharris Cophalis wrote:

"might be too heavy for me" Kajetan mutters, but he will head off to the saddle bags on his turn unless something changes.

Laithe, you notice something poke out from behind one of the standing stones at the base of the hill, perhaps the end of a bow.

The rest of the group waits, watching the approaching soldiers on the plain below draw closer (by the end of this round they are 100 feet from the base of the hill), the rider in the lead. The horseman wears dark, heavy armour and a helm that obscures his face, whilst the footmen jogging along beside him wear light chainshirts. There is still no further sign of the archers at this point, a few of the flaming arrows they shot earlier still burn fitfully around the camp at the top of the hill.

Meanwhile, Kajetan starts for the horses, intending to look for something to open the trap-door.

Round 4, what is everyone doing?

Laithe eyes off the position of the archer, a little confused and worried as to why they would not be pressing the attack. Presumably they are waiting for the man body of troops to arrive he reasons. Or perhaps they are hesitant to enter the stone circle...

Turning his attention back to the main body of troops approaching he edges slowly and carefully to the south, trying to keep within cover and stay as quiet as possible. Finding a suitable spot he hides and waits for the group to get within about 20-30ft of the tower.

Starting on the west side of the ruined tower, Laithe makes his way South and East, creeping to a concealed spot roughly 15ft from the edge of the road from the south, and 15ft from the southern wall of the tower. Move Silently 19 + 3 = 22, Hide 20 + 10 + 3 = 33; Jeez - I hope those rolls continue on into the battle!

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris takes a bead on one of the walking warriors.

"The rider is in knight's armour. Let's go for the troops. He will be much easier alone."

She aims for the closest target and fires.

Attack roll 9+7-6(3 range increments)=10, Damage=3pts. Then she notches another arrow and waits for a better shot.

"Come on, your arrows are burning low. Scared of a woman are you?"

Round 4, what is everyone doing?

By the end of round 3, Keildrithe's readied lullaby spell would have been cast, with a DC of 12. See above for targetting instructions.

Keildrithe continues to sing gently, making subtle gestures with one hand as he peers over the wall, sword resting against the masonry.

Round 4: casting sleep.

Nicholai peeks over the wall once more, then ducks and curses as he sees the group nearing the base of the hill. He grins at Pharris' declaration.

"I hope you have better luck, they obviously don't want to talk to me!" He quips with a purse-lipped frown. "Be right back!" He says with a grin, and dives for his sleeping blankets. When he re-emerges, he is holding his crossbow. He quickly makes his way back to the wall.

"Ok. NOW I'm ready. Time to show them it's not nice to deprive us of our beauty sleep! Not that you need any extra my dear, but the rest of us need all the help we can get!" He smirks.

WHen he notices Keildrithe casting a spell, he hisses softly but urgently, motioning him to get low.

"Keildrithe, you might want to wait on that. We don't want to give away what we can do too early!" He peeks over the wall again.

"On the other hand, I don't really want them to get toomuch closer, either." He reluctantly admits.

Presuming that takes all of my actions, next round I'm firing the crossbow! I don't have any area effect spells, except for Fog Cloud.

Hey all, just copying my post from the Discussion thread.

Hey all!
Just checking in.
I notice it's slowing down. Is everybody ok? (I mainly don't wanna be a hog-poster! I can easily type almost as much as I talk!)

I expect it to be slow on the PbP's this Father's Day weekend.
See you all on MOnday?

Laters,...

Taking Pharris’ advice, Kajetan dashes over to where the horses are tethered (the animals stamp and snort nervously in the grey pre-dawn light) and begins rummaging through the various saddlebags, soon emerging with a sturdy metal hoof-pick.

Laithe moves quietly a short way around and down the hill, concealing himself behind several large blocks of fallen stone part way down the hill, a short distance away from the trail leading up the hill.

Pharris aims her bow down the hill towards one of the jogging pike-men (the soldiers are armed either with long spears or axe and shield combination), but between the lighting conditions and the distance her aim is way off, the arrow thudding into the turf several yards ahead of the lead soldier.

Nicolai readies his crossbow and prepares to fire, whilst Keildrithe prepares to cast his sleep spell. Twiceborn, the group of soldiers is about 100 feet away from the base of the hill … which still puts them about 250+ feet away from your position, taking into account the diameter of the hill itself, outside the range of your spell.

Alton, making any preparations for battle, or firing missile weapons?

I've had a busy few weeks at work, and for various reasons haven't been able to or haven't felt like spending much time online nights or weekends. I get the impression that a few of us have been in similar boats.

Oops... in that case, still holding on the lullaby spell.

Oh Absotively-Posilutely! I was booked solid through last weekend, and am only now getting to where my time is almost my own! I wasn't complaining, just observing. Mainly I'm just trying to make myself NOT post as much as I used too, as I tend to monopolize once I start typing! :)

I was away from home for a few days, but I'm back now. I'll get caught up and try to post tommorow.

Down on the plain, the approaching soldiers break off into two groups, the mounted knight and the pikemen heading south past the hill towards the trail up, whereas the axemen hustle across country to approach the hill from the east.

Both groups now near the base of the hill, approx 150 feet away. Anyone want to do anything at this point?

Laithe tracks the progress of the warriors as they continue to approach. As the second group breaks away he curses under his breath, but remains confident that with the aid of magic they will be able to overcome the superior numbers of their opponents. Even so, his heart beats rapidly in his chest, and he has to consciously restrain himself from launching into his more offensive spells immediately. Instead he whispers a quiet prayer to Ehlonna, that he might strike true in the coming battle.

He steals a glance towards the top of the hill hoping that his companions start putting some missile weapon pressure on the approaching warriors.

Casts Guidance - lasts 10 rounds/until used, granting +1 on one attack role, skill check etc. Otherwise, Laithe will hold this round, remaining hidden and waiting for the group to get a little closer.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris takes another potshot at distance. She tries to allow for the difference in height and the distance after her last attempt.

"Come on, come on," she murmurs then fires.

Attack roll 2+6-2(range)=6, give me a break!

The woman lowers her bow in disgust, "cherettiene!" shaking her head.

DM

Spoiler:
Basically not thinking, she swears in elven, h%@#&#&@! perhaps?. She has no commonsense after all. And I keep rolling so badly when she has to fight, I am swearing.

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

How many pikemen, and how many axemen?

Keildrithe keeps on humming gently, keeping his eyes focused on the advancing knight and pikemen.

Five and five.

Catching his breath, Nicholai follows Pharris' example and pops his head up to lose a shot at the approaching group.

1d20+5=16, 1d8=3

I didn't adjust for range, so probably a miss

He ducks back down, winding his crossbow back up as he curses under his breath.

"Um,... You've had your warning shots gentlemen! Please don't force me to actually aim!" He calls out over the wall as he drops another bolt into place.

"Especially as I'm not certain I could actually HIT anything,..." He mutters to himself as he risks a peek to check their progress,...

Nicolai’s shot comes closer than Pharris’ actually glancing off one of the soldiers’ chainmail tunics.

In response, hitherto figures duck partially out from behind two of the standing stones ringing the base of the hill to the south and east, and fire their bows at Nicolai and Pharris where they poke their heads and shoulders above the stone wall … both archers aim almost as poorly as Pharris, and their arrows fly wide.

Alton:

Spoiler:
It’s been a long time since you met anyone else who spoke the tongue of elves, but if you’re not mistaken the word that Pharris just uttered is a rather nasty swear-word in that language.

Kajetan looks at the heavy stone trap door at the hoof hook and chuckles inappropriately. "Oh well here goes nothing," he inserts the hook and attempts to lever the trap door open, his knees buckling and his arms shaking, his teeth grind together under the strain.

Str. : 9 (-1) (1d20-1=2)

The trap door does not move an inch, but he does manage to strain his back.

"Too heavy" he grunts out.

Alton gives Pharris a brief, surprised glance as he knocks an arrow and aims at one of the approaching soldiers. "Pharris, would you help our mage friend?" he mutters, letting the arrow fly.
Been busy, sorry for my lack of posting.
I haven't taken into account range penalties.
Attack 24; Damage 3

The stone trap door seems far too heavy for Kajetan to lift. Alton’s arrow flies true, causing a minor wound on one of the pikemen.

The knight urges his mount up the steep path, whilst the pikemen scramble up behind him. To the east, the axemen climb up the steep part at the base of the hill. Both groups make slow progress up this part of the hill, moving to within about 130 feet of your position.

The two archers train their bows on the tower’s remains, waiting for any of the defenders to again pop up to fire on the approaching soldiers.

Next round – further moves?

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris tries one more time. She aims for the pikemen who is labouring up the hill on the right. Takes a breath, holds it in and...

Attack roll 8+6-2=12, Damage=1pt

...goes to help Kajetan. "Come on, Kajetan, you are as strong as an ox. Go on lift that door."

The woman shakes her head at the halfling as she walks over, "I used to be good with a bow. Now look at me."

NIcholai smiles at Pharris as she moves to help Kajetan.

"No worries my dear. All it takes is practice. And our friends seem determined to give us ample opportunities!" He grins as he scoots over 5', pops up and takes another shot at the nearing pikemen.

Move 5' to the side so I'm not where I was, (and hopefully not where the bowman is aiming!) and fire crossbow.

1d20+5=15, 1d8=2

NIcholai promptly sits back down and begins rewinding his weapon.

"And apparently I need all the practice I can get!" He mutters under his breath.

"Skills atrophy with time." Alton mutters, knocking another arrow and continuing "I don't know that he's strong enough to lift that. Strength of mind doesn't always mean strength of body."

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

"Kajetan if you can lift it a little I will slot a dagger in as a wedge. Maybe even two."

As Pharris moves, she drops her bow and frees a dagger for next go.

Male Human - Karandic Druid/4
Pharris Cophalis wrote:

Laithe watches as return fire begin to whislte out from his friends in the tower towards the oncoming soldiers. Despite the fact that given the range and the poor lighting few arrrows hit their targets, he is satisfied and thankful of their counter-attack. That should keep their attention focused on the tower and give me time to work my magic he thinks.

Judging that he still needs the soldiers to get a little closer before he launches his first offensive spell, he quietly whispers the words to another spell. "Ehlonna, the ancient trees of your great forests withstand all that is thrown against them. Lend me their strength today, that I may shrug off the weapons of those who oppose us."

Casts Barkskin. I'm assuming the +2 bonus will stack with Laithe's natural armour when he changes into wolf form?

Keildrithe unleashes his lullaby spell (DC 12) on the closest and tightest cluster of pikemen, and immediately begins to hum the words to a sleep spell.

"Yeah right!?" Kajetan mutters under his breath.

Wow... I've never seen Age of Darkness reach the bottom of the PbP thread list. That having been said, I may not be able to post tomorrow (Tuesday) or Wednesday. Cheers!

I think Mothman is pretty flat out with work at the moment, and being in the middle of a combat, there's not too much we can do in the meantime...

I am going to spend the time in prayer to the Invisible Castle gods, I think we are going to need the help.

Pharris, when the time comes I will do an aid other to your strength check to open the trap door, I only have a 50% chance of succeeding.

The Exchange

We have no high strength characters, Pharris is 13 Strength. It could end up with everyone trying to lift the trapdoor at this rate.

And if there was one of my characters that I would love to roll better it is this girl. She is hopeless in 2009.

So I agree, you aid and I'll lift. But maybe we will need help....

Cheers

Heh, that could be a funny scene in itself! One by one we all leave the wall to aid in picking up the door! ;P

Hrmm,... I WAS going to say, 'At least her rolls can only get better, not worse!' But I am NOT gonna be the guy who jinxed it! :)

Sorry guys, combination of fighting off the flu, being generally busy at work and out on site a lot recently and just feeling a bit unmotivated when it comes to pbp games when I do actually find some free time!

Laithe, barkskin should work in wolf form. Keildrithe, your lullaby spell should nab about four of the pikemen (their formation isn’t quite tight enough while they are climbing the hill to get all of them.)

Pharris and Nicolai both miss their shots, Laithe and Keildrithe cast their spells and Kajetan waits for Pharris or someone to help him with the trapdoor.

The approaching soldiers scramble up the steepest part of the hill, moving warily, their mounted commander barking orders at them not to move in too quickly. Both groups approach to within about fifty feet of the tower wall. Three of the pikemen look tired and sleepy, stifling yawns. The two archers at the base of the hill fire up again into the stone circle. One arrow barely misses Alton, whilst the other scores a red line across Pharris’ leg as she turns to help Kajetan. 3 points of damage.

There is a distant stroke of lightning, followed a few seconds later by a loud peal of thunder, and it begins to rain, large, heavy, cold drops splattering on the ground all about.

Next round, party turn.

Nicholai winces in sympathy with Pharris as he sees the arrow graze her leg. He drops a new bolt into the slot of the wound and waiting crossbow, and looks up after the lightning and thunder announce that the imminent rain is no longer a mere possibility. His glance is just in time to catch a large drop right in one eye.

"Perfect. Just. PER-fect." He growls as he rubs his eye.

He looks at Alton, and gives a wry imitation of his usual carefree grin.

"All of this attention and manpower, just for us? I think I'd be flattered if we weren't so scr@wed." He comments flippantly. Then pops up and fires off another shot, ducking back down as soon as the shot is fired without even waiting to see if it hit.

To hit: 1d20+5=16, Dmg: 1d8=4

He hastily winds begins winding his crossbow again.

"When they get close, and I mean close, is when I'll use the fire spell when they try to grab us. Try not to get between me and them until after I use it. After that,... I'm not going down until i don't have enough energy left to light a candle. And probably not then." He mutters to no one in particular as he reloads his crossbow with a particularly firm expression on his usually cheerful face.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris nods to Kajetan hands him the dagger to wedge under when he gets a chance and then heaves for all she is worth.

"Come on, by the Gods give me strength."

OK here goes...10+1=11. Kajetan's aid and one other come do it?

"We need more help, Alton, Keildrithe, anyone, its just too heavy for me. I am a warrior not a blacksmith."

Just so I completely understand the situation and intention here; what is the plan regarding opening the trap door? Keep in mind that your attackers are possibly within charging distance of the wall now.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris and Kajetan are trying to get the trapdoor open. She isn't strong enough so she is calling for more support from the rest.

Got it, I’m wondering what the plan beyond that was? I’m not exactly clear. If the idea is for everyone to ‘ninja vanish’ down the hole before the bad guys arrive, its rapidly getting to the point (if it has not already been reached) where they will see you going down the hole. Just want to make that clear, and also make sure everyone is aware that having people manning the trapdoor now is diverting resources away from the immanent attack.
If that’s understood by all, cool, just want to make sure I had made the situation clear.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris hasn't been much of a resource for quite some time. They can always say no, I would.
