Excited does not begin to describe the way Pharris feels about her entry into the common lands of the Shortlived. Not so very long ago, she was Pharris or Silver, an elven youth of 104 summers. Then she came of age, receiving numerous pieces of advice from her family and more importantly her full sidhe name "Cynpharrisong Tremanalim," or Silver-Voiced of the Grove of Many-limbed Trees. Of course as Pharris left the Longlived woods she had plenty of time to remember the important parts of all that advice.
The Advice of her Uncle Sethiren
He is one of the Elders of the Grove and so his advice must be listened to, if not heeded. First he handed Pharris a well made chain shirt, well made that is for a piece of Shortlived equipment. This was to protect Pharris during her visit to the common lands since every Longlived Elf knows that the Men are at war constantly. He told her about the harsh treatment he received from the common races. Said that he had to flee from more than one village crowd, who blamed him for all their ills, calling him a demon, a fey-kin monster and worse.
All Pharris could think in her naivety was about the fights to come and the chance to breathe in a true battle, hear the ringing steel and last cry of a mortal wound, and even poetically taste the blood flying by.
The Advice of her Aunt Larkinsarn
Again her aunt tried to dissuade Pharris from her plans. Her aunt, the chief arcanist of the Grove and a member of the Seelie Tower of All Magicks offered to take her under personal tutorship, to avoid the waste of several years travel with the Shortlived when Pharris could be igniting her true potential for dweomercraft. Larkinsarn had no successor, she said, Pharris is that successor and with a little application, she could be the equal of all arcanists. This conversation had been going on for forty years and Larkinsarn gave in at the touch of her wise husband.
A little application! By the very trees never, she means twenty years of trying to make the wind blow backwards. Spells are for the weak-kneed and Pharris knows she isn't one of them. Sorcery runs out, spells fail and spellcasters fall, especially when there is fey magicians aplenty in the woods. No magic, never magic, a true blade and what better than a great big sword. No-one is going to call her weak-kneed, not unless they want to lose their legs.
The Advice of Her Eldest Sister, Junodoromfiel
To the core of Pharris' being she wished Juno was coming out into the wide world too. They both had tears, but not enough to spoil the ceremony, anyway Juno gave her a bag of coins to buy a sword off the Shortlived. The only words she spoke out loud were to tell Pharris, to find a friend, someone without cotton wool between their ears, someone who could take Juno's place and try to temper the girl's more impetuous extremes.
Her sister always knew what advice to give Pharris.
The Advice of Mother, Fletelleera
She told me to always remember the seductive nature of the Shortlived. The way that a common race lives is by burning bright and a bright flame doesn't last. Pharris was warned not to become hypnotised by the way they treated everything with emotion, not calmness. To ensure this, Mother promised that if Pharris did not return in ten years she would come and drag her back. Simply to preserve her and the reputation of the Grove.
The truth is that Mother has always said Pharris behaved just like a Shortlived. The way she loves, the emotion, the sweat and energy of the girl is not the way of a Longlived. Remember all those lessons indecorum, patience and gentle fortitude, all to attract the right partner for the next four hundred years. Well ten years to get it out of a girl's system, we shall see.
The Advice of Father, Morytainon
His true words had already been made that morning. In front of the rest he laughed and gave her his blessing. He foretold that Pharris would have stories aplenty when she returned.
That morning he had spoken of the rise of the Shortlived faith of Arton as foretold by the Rose Warriors and with it the cancerous unraveling of magic. Faerie and elves have started to imbue human children with Fey Magic in a bid to strengthen the future. To act as a bulwark against the encroaching Arton. However there are members of the Seelie Court that want to know more. They want to know what is happening to the humans so blessed. They also want to know if the spread of Arton and the dark fall of magic is indeed true. Silver's father orders her to try and find the knowledge the elves need.
Father is the best one of all, most like Pharris, most drawn by curiosity and a passion for the world beyond the Grove. Life is for living and her father knew a thing or two about that. He had taught Pharris a little of the Bladesong, for he could sing it well. A puissant Wardancer, Morytainon is an elf to aspire to. One day she would become one too.
For now, Pharris would go on his mission to find answers.
The Advice of the Treant, Friend of the Tremanalim, Ordorsomolom
It is twelve summers since the Master last spoke to anyone. The shock waves through the community were clearly visible as he stepped up and spoke.
"Shortlived treefriend of this place of rich earth and fresh water, I have heard tell that the Men are like insects, busy, busy, busy. Well remember that even little ants can leave great pain and destruction when enough wish you harm. Four hundred summers ago when my son was a bright sapling, he met these men and he never returned. I found a burnt twig and a charred stump. The men left but perhaps they are due to return. Good young friend, rather than stop the ants in their tracks find ways to send them along other paths."
How does a mere elf listen and understand the words of an ancient treeman?
Description
Spoiler:
Cynpharrisong is a beautiful fair-skinned elf maiden. She is very tall and slim with the grace of a catwalk model. Her disguise skills, she uses to reduce the effect of her sylvan beauty. Makeup to soften her cheekbones and ears clipped back deep into her hair.
The lovely red hair is a matter of pride and Pharris could not find it in her heart to change it.
By day Pharris dresses as a warrior in chain shirt. Her greatsword sticks up above her shoulder and goes down her back under a green cloak. The human longbow is kept in hand.
By night, Pharris is used to wearing veils and thin chiffons, silks and the like. Her lack of conscience is a giveaway sign of her elven heritage, until she learns to understand the lusts and emotions of the Shortlived humans. At present, she is too young and immature to understand the effect this has on others.
The biggest clue to her true nature is her voice. When relaxed and off her guard, the joy and excitement of a girl bubbles up.
Personality
Spoiler:
Young, immature, naive and excited pretty much sums this girl up. She doesn't know what she wants from life, other than time away from her sheltered upbringing.
However that is in terms of an elf or a sidhe. In terms of a disguised human, she stands tall, calm and proud - like an ethereal queen of ancient mythology, almost untouchable.
Pharris has been taught respect for elders, protection for the meek and that violence is the last recourse of the foolish. She bears an innate hatred of the perversion that is undeath, and also holds their deep fear of demonic evil.
Pharris has a low regard for magic in all its forms, rather trusting to her own strength and personality. That self-belief is coupled to a strong character and a quick brain. Her lack of common sense and impulsive acts have always been tempered by the rest of her family, however who knows what trouble she can get into now.
Mission
Spoiler:
Pharris is a blank canvas. The words and advice she has received are one thing but the people she meets and the guidance they give her will undoubtedly effect her future adventures.
However her father has tasked her to check whether Arton is damaging magic, and what is the effect on the humans of becoming more elven in magical nature. Respecting Morytainon, Pharris will do her best to concentrate on this task.
The Shortlived child, Kajetan Armanno, is the first link in the chain, one of the fey blooded. Pharris will do her best not to let her own dislike for the weakness of magic interfere with dealing with the "half elf".
