Pharris seriously needs some better dice rolls!

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Keildrithe ignores Pharris and Kajetan's pleas, keeping focused on the three pikemen that appear sleepy as he hums the words of slightly more potent words of power. Targeting the three sleepy pikemen with a sleep spell, DC 13.

Kajetan's original plan was to Ninja vanish down the hole, but now the plan is to get it open just in case we need to run away and fight from there, where there numbers will not be as telling. Although if you think too hard on that there is always the chance they will just cover the trap door with a big rock and let us starve. Kajetan is working on the fact that there are usually hidden routes out of tower dungeons and they might be able to fake their death that way.

Kajetan hands Pharris the hook and attempts to claw at the edges of the stone as she levers it open.

Aid other roll on the trap door. (1d20-1=6)

But his fingers are not strong enough to get purchase and he is no help at all.

My next question was going to be 'how close are they in game terms?' It's like you read my mind! (Of course, that's like perusing a comic book, so not exactly a MAJOR feat there,...) ;P

Nicholai looks up from his crossbow as he drops in another bolt, and grimaces as he sees the trouble with the trapdoor.

"Um, They're getting a little close for comfort over here." He says with forced joviality. "As excited as I am about the possibility of exploring an ancient dungeon, we may have to postpone our spelunking for a bit."

NIcholai looks at Alton as he brings his crossbow up to his shoulder.

"Take your shot, tell me how close they are. If we have time I'll take another shot, if not, I'll flash-fry the first one to try and come over the wall!" He nods his readiness,...

So, plan is to hold action until after Alton. Take shot if they are not already charging the wall. Drop crossbow and Burning Hands if they charge and try to come over the wall this round! This NOT a 'readied' action, I am HOLDING my action until later in the round, Get 'em Alton!

Oh, and I agree, what's IC have against Pharris anyway?!? Give a girl a break IC! :)

There is a distant stroke of lightning, followed a few seconds later by a loud peal of thunder, and it begins to rain, large, heavy, cold drops splattering on the ground all about.

Laithe feels the drops of rain begin to fall and can't keep a smile from his face. Thankyou Ehlonna! he thinks fervently, knowing that the heavy rain will cause the 10ft strip of loose dirt around the edge of the tower turn to mud and give the attackers some trouble.

Still hidden, he turns his attention back towards the attackers. Seeing them now getting to the point where they will be able to charge in, he figures it's time to unleash the first of his offensive spells. He lays one hand on the ground, gathering a tangle of the plants and vines that cover the area. "Restrain those that would attack us, and if they try to escape your grasp, sting them!" he whispers quietly. He focuses on the group of axemen who are approaching from the east.

Technical. Casts Briar Web (range 140ft). Functions similar to Entangle, except the entangling plants grow thorns. affects a 20ft radius (he centres on the middle of the group in an attempt to tray and catc heveryone. Successful reflex save limits you to half move while in the area. Failing the save you have 3 option: Stay still, try and break free, or continue to act normally.
Stay still: -2 to attacks, -4 to Dex.
Break free: spend a full round action trying to break free allows for another saving throw. If successful you take no damage but still suffer half move within spell area. Failing the save deal 2d6 thorn damage and you remain entangled.
Act normally (attack, cast spell with somantic component, move etc) take 2d6 damage (concentration check required to cast.
The plant provides cover: 5ft away you have cover, 20ft away you have total cover. lasts for 4 minutes.

Oooo! Nice Laithe! Where is THAT spell from?!? :)

Complete Divine - it's a second level spell, but well worth it in my opinion.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

"Tell me when you want me back on the wall, Keildrithe. Or I'll try again on the trapdoor." Pharris shakes her head at Kajetan. "No magicks to help here? Useless Art."

She prepares to lift again unless called away.

Alton drops his bow, darting over to help open the tunnel which will hopefully lead to sanctuary.

Str check 16

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Keildrithe, reluctant to interrupt his casting, says nothing while he continues to hum his words of power, but flashes at both Pharris and Alton a wide-eyed look that holds a combination of incredulity, dismay, fear, and perhaps even anger.

My roll was only an aid other that I failed, you still get to make your roll, at +1 for your strength, this round (unless I am very confused on the order of the rounds.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

"Right here goes Kajetan. Pray to whatever god you believe in. Thanks Alton."

Pharris grits her teeth and pulls for all she is worth.

Strength Test 1d20+1+2(Alton)=19+1+2=22! OMG.

NIcholai blinks as Alton suddenly turns and dashes to help the others with the trapdoor.

"Or,... I'll just stay here and guard the wall while you all get the door open." The dandy mutters with a wide-eyed and surprised smirk. NIcholai shares an incredulous look with Keildrithe before returning his full attention to the wall,... and anything that might come over it,...

Still holding action,...

Oh, and NICE roll Pharris! ;) It seems IC hasn't deserted her completely, it just wants her to be appreciative of the rolls when she DOES get them! ;P

Nicolai fires his crossbow again at the approaching pikemen, the bolt piercing one of the soldier’s chainshirts with a thunk, and causing the man to grunt in pain.

Keildrithe sings his spell, and one of the approaching soldiers slumps to the ground, asleep.

Laithe, from his hidden position outside the fortification, casts his own spell, causing the weeds and small bushes all about the approaching axemen to suddenly writhe and begin growing at an alarming rate, forming long sharp thorns as they do, wrapping around the legs of the soldiers who cry out in shock and horror. Four of the jogging warriors are caught within the circle of thorny plants. One of these is caught fast as the thorn covered vines snake up both leg to the waist. The other three seem to pull free of the worst of the plants, but their progress is slowed as the plants continue to try to grasp at them.

Pharris and Kajetan continue to try to lift the trapdoor, and with Alton moving to help them (the small warrior contributing a surprising amount to the effort), they manage it, getting hooks and knives in around the edges of the heavy stone slab to loosen it, then heaving it open. Stale, fouled air escapes from the dark hole revealed below, and a chill seems to pass through the three adventurers, whether from the cold rain that is starting to fall or something more sinister it is hard to tell. Dust covered stone steps lead down into darkness.

Pharris, you seem to have taken two rolls to open the trapdoor this round. That’s my fault, as this round has dragged on more than it should due to my absence. Alton’s roll, with Pharris’ first roll as an assist, manages to get the trapdoor open. Pharris, please use your second roll, the 19, for the next d20 roll you need to make.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Thanks, Mothman, that's classy.

Pharris gapes down into the hole, lost for words with the dank smells and dark steps.

Outside the circle the horseman calls out “Arton is with us! With his blessing we will prevail against these infidels! Fear not their magic. Forward!” His hand is at his throat, where a Star of Arton hangs. He urges his horse over to where the sleeping pikemen has fallen.

The other four spearmen, inspired by their leader’s words, charge forward towards the wall. However, about ten feet out from the stones they suddenly become mired in mud, three of the men sinking down to their knees, the hafts of their spears likewise getting stuck in the thick mud. The fourth spearman, lagging a little behind the others, manages to avoid the cloying mud, finding a firmer area of earth. He moves within ten feet of the wall, his spear ready to strike at Keildrithe or Nicolai on the other side.

The entangled axeman tries to break free of the web of briars, but only manages to impale himself on several long thorns. Blood pours from several serious scratches and punctures. His three companions look at him, but realize they cannot easily chop away the vines without further injuring their companion, and perhaps fearful of being caught themselves, hasten to move out of the area. The last axeman, outside of the circle of briars, seems to hear something, and peers around at the bush that hides Laithe. It does not look like he can see the druid, but perhaps he heard him. He calls something to his companions in Thuringian, then begins moving warily towards Laithe’s hiding place.

The entangled soldier suffered serious damage from the thorns, the other three use a double move to leave the area of effect. The un-caught soldier moves to within ten feet of Laithe, with the bush between them.

Suddenly there is a ~twang~ from somewhere nearby, and a feathered shaft seems to sprout from Alton’s shoulder. A dark clad archer stands just outside the stone circle to the west, having approached unseen and unheard, and has just fired an arrow at the halfling for 9 points of damage.

The archers to the south and east move out from cover and begin running up the hill.

We are now on the good guy’s turn at the beginning of Round 8 – actions everyone.

So to recap; 4 pikemen ten feet to the south of the wall, three of them trapped in mud. A little way down the hill, about fifty feet to the south are the sleeping pikeman and the horseman.
To the east, about twenty five feet away from the wall are three axemen, with another about fifty feet away, entangled. A fifth has moved a little away around to the east, and is now about twenty five feet away from the wall, ten feet from Laithe’s position.
To the west, an archer stands directly outside the stone circle, about fifteen feet away from where Pharris, Alton and Kajetan stand near the trapdoor.
Two archers are about a third of the way up the hill, south and east.

Kajetan falls onto his backside in shock at the foul stench and stale air that rises from the hole below the trap door, "I was hoping for fresher air which might of led to another way out," he whispers to Pharris and Alton.

The twang and the dull thud of the arrow striking Alton seem to shock him from his study of the steps down. His head whips round to where the western archer stands and the words of a spell spring unbidden to his mouth. His hand dives into his robes pulling out a small, mouldy and fluff covered tart which he flings towards the archer as he shouts the last words of power.

Hideous Laughter

DC-16 Will save to resist the spell. This is the archer standing alone to the west.

I want to hold my move action until I see if the archer falls into fits of laughter or not.

Oooo,... NICE description Moth! I'm beginning to wonder if we shouldn't take our chances with the attackers! ;)

Oops! I took too long with (over)writing my post! Got scooped by Kaj! :) I'll post my action after lunch. (If work will let me!)

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Keildrithe curses beneath his breath, disappointed that so few of the warriors succumbed to his words of power. Seeing the one spearman approaching the wall, the Karand ducks behind it for cover, and yells out "listen to this and reflect, followers of Arton"! He then begins to bellow out an angry ode:

Religion changed the face of man, thou shalt not kill, we all are gone
The seed of ignorance is born thou shalt not think, thou shalt conform

The pigs call for pure submission and fall into the fray
The lonely hunter beats his shallow drum, the song of world disarray

Cling to wasted beliefs and visions and bathe in apathy again
No solution, the retribution of spiritual sickness begins

The legacy of suffering is through, the guilt we bear shall not tear us in two

Born, we are the same, within the silence, indifference be thy name
Torn, we walk alone, we sleep in silent shades
The grandeur fades, the meaning never known

Keildrithe begins to Inspire Courage among his allies... chanting the beginnings of "Born," by Nevermore... to be continued next round.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris springs back a pace and picks up her bow, notching the arrow in one fluid motion she turns and fires at the stray archer behind the party.

Attack roll 19+1+6=27, Damage 8+1(for inspiration)=9pts

Nicholai's head snaps up at the sound of the twanging bowstring practically on top of them. He gives a questioning gaze at the arrow that has almost magically appeared in Arton's back. Time seems to stand still as he furrows his brow, denying the arrow. It is the sudden actions of both Kajetan and Pharris that cause Nicholai to blink and snap back into the moment.

NIcholai frowns as time speeds up once more. "That is quite enough of THAT!" He intones sonorously as he half-rises from his kneeling position, fluid words of power flowing from his lips as he reaches for the magic that is his constant companion.

NIcholai's head clears the top of the stone wall, and his blue-gloved hand joins it. The gold stars on his knuckles flash briefly as he finishes the words to his spell and extends his fist towards the rider. A bright light shines from between his fingers, as if trying to escape.

"COWARD!" His usually pleasant baritone rings out over the hill, dripping with contempt.

"Sending boys to do your work because your too afraid! Shooting a man in the back! Let's see how YOU like it!" He cries, and opens his hand. Three brilliant white points of light leap forward like hounds off their leashes. They buzz down the hill, between pikemen, archers and brambles like demented dragonflies, until an instant later they slam into the rider,...

Pop head up just enough to see and get my arm over to aim, so hopefully still have some cover from the archers! MM on our friend, the rider on the horse. If he's 50' away he's well within my range! Using the mage gloves to boost the spell by 2 lvls, giving me another bolt. (3 total) I added the +1 from INspire Courage too; 12 points total force dmg.

MM Dmg: 1d4+1+1=3, 1d4+1+1=3, 1d4+1+1=6

The intensity of the cold, driving rain increases, making footing treacherous, grips on weapons tenuous and decreasing visibility, already low due to the heavy clouds hanging in the dawn sky.

All attack rolls suffer a 20% miss chance and you will need to make a DC 10 balance check if you try to run or charge, falling prone if you fail.

The flash from Nicolai’s spell briefly illuminates the camp site, and the scarred, bearded face and impressive physique of the nearby archer, a moment before Pharris’ arrow slams into his shoulder, spinning him. Nicolai’s missiles unerringly seek the horseman, who rocks in his saddle, but gives little other indication observable from this distance that the spell caused him harm.

Keildrithe’s words ring out over the camp above the sound of the rain. Kajetan throws a pie at the archer, who begins to guffaw, then drops out of sight behind the wall as he falls to the ground in gales of eerie hideous laughter.

Nicolai, Inspire Courage gives you a + to weapon damage rolls, I would rule that it doesn’t apply to magic missiles.

I believe I'm in range for the following action. Let me know if not.

Laithe watches the axemen get partially entangled, but is disappointed when 4 make it out unscathed. However, his attention is drawn back to the road, his eyes following the path of Nicolai's magical darts as they strike into the rider. Tear out the throat and the rest will die he thinks grimly.

Spurred into action by Keildrithe's rousing song, Laithe wills his body to change into wolf form. Letting out a long howl, he glares for a moment at the approaching axeman as if daring him to follow, and then springs away, braving the slippery ground to bound across the terrain directly towards the mounted warrior.

Balance Check 13 + 3 = 16.

Nearing his target he leaps in, with another quick prayer to Ehlonna to help him strike true.

Charges at the rider. To hit 9 + 8 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 21 Hope that hits! I've added +2 for charging, +1 for inspire courage and +1 for the guidance spell cast earlier. To damage: 5 + 5 + 1 = 11.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Trip the horse, trip the horse!

I held off posting my move action earlier until I saw if the archer had dropped.

"Nice shot Pharris" Kajetan compliments the lady warrior, a tremble to his voice, he shudders visibly, but if it is from fear or cold it is difficult to tell.

"Pharris? Alton? The laughing Archer will be back on his feet in a short while, can one of you end him before that time?" he looks at the wounded Alton, hoping that he will want revenge.

Kajetan then moves closer to the wall, his feet slipping and sliding in the mud, he crashes against the partial wall next to Nicolai, "nice day for it?" he comments, flashing a wan smile at the amiable sorcerer, a large drip gathers on the end of his nose.

Nicholai ducks back down in the questionable safety of the low wall. He looks at Kajetan and, shakes. It takes the bookish young man a moment to realize that Nicholai is shaking with barely suppressed mirth.

"Indeed. It doesn't get any better than this! I think I may have to get you to teach me that spell." The fop replies with a raised eyebrow and a genuine smile, nodding at the wall where peals of soggy laughter can still be heard. The smile doesn't reach his eyes though. It is obvious that the dandy's mind is racing. He shakes his head as he hastily wipes at his eyes.

"That was my best shot at this range, and I don't think it fazed him. I can do better, but I'd have to be a LOT closer. And I don't think those guys are gonna just let me walk past. I think our best bet os to keep taking them down as they try to get to us over the wall. I don't suppose you ever played 'Defend the Castle' as a kid?" He asks with a sly look.

"Never got to play it, but it's never too late to learn," Kajetan mumbles, shivering. "I can only deal with them at close range as well," he risks a glance over the wall.

Not overly Druid-like to attack the horse rather than the evil rider atop it! With a bit of luck my attack will hit and he'll fall off his horse anyway! The slippery conditions can't be doing him and his horse any favours.

Remember, there are 4-5 pikeman within 10ft of the wall (and you), currently stuck in mud. They may not be for long though, so if you can hit them with spells while they are delayed, would be worthwhile. There are also another 4-5 axeman who can make the wall next round (assuming they don't give chase to Laithe).

Laithe, can you roll your miss chance for that attack? 20% due to rain.

Cool. Unfortunately I'll need to leave you in suspense. I think a 21 is pretty close to the number you need, but I don't seem to have the bad guys' stats with me here today ... so you'll just have to wait!

Yup, that is why I moved to the wall, to get as many of them as I can close to me for next round. My spells are small areas of short cones.

The horseman is clad in an intricately worked breastplate and greaves fitted with strategically placed spikes, the flared cheek-guards and nose-guard of an open faced helm partly obscuring his features. He wields a spiked morning star and a heavy shield.

Laithe-wolf bounds across the slippery grass and leaps at him. The rider wheels his horse, brings his shield to bear, seeking to block the wolf’s charge with a swing of his morning star … but Laithe has aimed lower than it initially seemed, his teeth closing on an unprotected part of the man’s thigh, ripping out a gobbet of flesh.

Sorry for my lack of posting; I've had a busy few days preparing for a trip. I'll be completely without internet access until the 20th, at which time my posting should return to normal.

NIcholai grins at the shivering mage. "That's the spirit! It's simple, you just have to keep the other guys out of your castle! By any means you can. Rather rough game, actually,..." The soggy dandy mentions thoughtfully as he prepares to pop his head up with Kajetan,...

Safe trip 'Alton'! ;)

Alton runs through the rain to the wall and begins hoisting himself up over the three foot high barrier, where the laughing archer lies somewhere on the other side. Double move, needs to stow his weapons to climb.

Have a good time, anywhere good?

The rider hisses through clenched teeth at Laithe’s bite, but keeps his saddle. Directing with his knees, he urges the heavy warhorse around. The animal whinnies, it’s eyes wild, but is obviously battle-hardened, showing little other sign of dismay at the conditions or the proximity of an attacking wolf. The horse rears, then tramples its hooves down at the wolf, trying to bite also.

Laithe’s nimbleness and the driving rain let him avoid the worst of the attack, but one iron-shod hoof catches him a glancing blow to the side of the head for 9 points of damage.

The rider yells out something to his men in Thuringian DC 15 listen check to hear over the rain and hideous laughter, if you speak that language, urges his horse back a step 5 foot step, no AOO and puts his shield hand up to grasp a Star of Arton hanging at his throat. A faint glow from between his fingers lights up for a moment before fading away.

The three axemen who escaped the tangling briars jog through the rain towards Laithe, readying their axes as they go Double moves, the leader finishes five feet away from Laithe, the others are a little further back, whilst the other jogs towards the wall and vaults it, landing on the stone paving a few feet behind Keildrithe call it five feet away. The last hapless axeman continues to scream and struggle against the thorny vines.

Of the pikemen, two manage to pull themselves free of the worst of the mud, whilst another struggles against it still, unable to move much. They ready their spears, whilst the other of their number (who had avoided the mud for the most part), reaches over the low wall with his long spear to stab at Nicolai sheltering behind it. Despite the cover provided by the wall, and the concealment of the rain, the spear point finds the mages shoulder, scoring a nasty gash across it for 6 points of damage.

The pikemen are ten feet from the wall, three of them clustered close together, one (who just stabbed Nicolai) a little distant from the others.

The archers continue to move up the hill. One slows to fire an arrow at Laithe-wolf, but it sails harmlessly past him. The other archer continues his awful laughter, unseen behind the wall.

Laithe-wolf bites back a yelp as a heavy horse shoe strikes his head, setting off sparks of stars at the corner of his vision. He is dimly aware of the rider calling on magic; something that strikes him as rare for an Artonite. He has little time to dwell on it though as the axeman arrive on the scene.

Knowing he doesn't stand a chance if he gets surrounded, he decides it's time to move back to the safety of the wall. He darts nimbly up the hill, moving to the west side of the road, partly into the rough. Finding a suitable standing stone to take some cover behind, he wills a transformation back into human form. From there he quickly speaks the words of another spell, pitting the power of Ehlonna against that of Arton.

Move action roughly 50ft North-west (wants to find a little cover off the road, close to the wall of the tower). Swift action to change to human form. Casts entangle on the area of ground he just fled, centering roughly on the horseman, but hoping to also catch the axemen in it's area of effect.

That's Laithe's turn, everyone else for this round?

Pharris drops her bow and swivels on the nearest threat, the axeman. She moves to intercept him before he can take out one of the spellcasters.

Greatsword swings free and Pharris launches a difficult double strike to the head. The first is a feint and the second attack is the full strength as the axe moves out of its defensive line.

Attack roll 12+7=19, Damage 10+3=13pts.

Renewed faith and courage in her ability blossoms, "I am death, I am the blade."

Kajetan gasps as the pike stabs Nicolai in the shoulder, "Oh no you don't" he hisses through clenched teeth.

He manoeuvres along the wall trying to get as many of the Pike men into a 15' cone as he can (drawing an AOO if he is threatened by the pike man when he leaves the starting square).

He then throws a pinch of multi-coloured sand at the cluster of Pikemen while chanting the words of power, a burst of vivid colourful clashing colours bursts from the sand covering a 15' cone.

Cast Colour Spray DC-15 will save to resist. If he has to avoid the wounded Pikeman to avoid catching Pharris in the area he will.

Pharris sword slips in under the warrior’s shield and slices through his chain-shirt, ripping a dangerous and jagged wound across his torso. The man screams in pain and anger, blood dripping down his beard and oozing from his armour.

Kajetan, you can probably take a 5 foot step back to avoid AOO’s and still catch three of them within the area of effect – just not the one who went after Nicolai. If he’s you’re target, you can get him and one other at best.
