M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir ignores the fleeing bandit and looks around to see if the trail continues.
survival- take 10? = 18

It does indeed continue. Looking ahead, you notice about a mile further along that smoke is rising from above the trees.

Male Dwarf Cleric 1 (favoured class)

"Looks like that where we have t' go then" Sondergang comments at Wildir's pointing out of the smoke.

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Drew tromps after the dwarves, trying to stay above the snowline. Keeping his bow at the ready, he watches out for any signs of ambush.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir leads the way eyes and ears open for signs of more bandits.

perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Sovereign Court

Following and keeping an eye out.

Perception?: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

You continue on with no sign of any aggression towards you until the trail suddenly turns sharply upward. After climbing at least a hundred feet into the hills, the trail finally levels off again. In a clearing among the trees, a large wooden lodge overlooks a ravine spanned by a long rope bridge. Smoke rises from the lodge's two snow-covered chimneys, and a large woodpile is stacked against the outer wall.

A small outbuilding stands east of the lodge, and a stone well nearly blanketed by snow is barely recognizable to the north. Several tracks lead southwest toward a detached stable.

Male Halfling Ninja/1

"Shall I sneak up and check out the cottage?", Drew asks

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir raises a shaggy eyebrow inquisitively, "Maybe ve make sure no vun is in de shed first."

horse tracks or people tracks to the shed? Do they look very recent?

Male Dwarf Cleric 1 (favoured class)

"Aye check out t' stables and shed first..then we can deal wit' t' 'ouse"

There are indeed tracks leading from the lodge to the stable that are entirely fresh. You can see no tracks going to the shed, but given the fact that snow has been a fairly regular occurrence, it wouldn't take much time to cover over any tracks that may've led out there.

Everyone who wishes to check the place out, I need to know how you're going to approach it as well as a Stealth check. Map of the area is located here. You will be entering from the Northeast corner of the map at location Z-1.

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Drew is going to sneak down to the shed and take a look

Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

I don't know if the rest of us are at all sneaky. Can we circle around out of sight?

Along row 1 of the map is a stand of trees. Anyone who wishes can safely move through them without risk of detection as long as you take it slow. Move at half speed and you'll avoid needing stealth checks.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

that's not exactly the direction I was thinking. What about down the eastern edge of the map and then along the south edge to the stable?

Wildir watches the small figure slink into the shadows at the edge of the path. He crouches ready to charge should any alarm be given.

Yeah, I think there's enough cover along the eastern edge to keep you concealed as long as you don't all make the trip at once.

Male Dwarf Cleric 1 (favoured class)

If it is possible to do that I suggest we check out the outhouse on the way down the Eastern side.. let's space out at 10 ' intervals just remember that the three dwarves only move 10' a round at half speed.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Yeah, spread out and move around to the stable.

Sovereign Court

I concur, I'll be the last given my relative decent ability to hold my/ soak up the flank.

DM Screen:

Drew Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29

Bandit Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Rohkar Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

You all avoid detection as you approach the cottage; Drew, upon approaching the outhouse, hears no noise from within and confirms it's lack of occupation when all that greets him at the door is a foul odor.

As you slink back to the trees, you remain undetected; your halfling companion, as well, approaches all the way to the side of the lodge without a sound from within. It seems clear that, up to this point, no one inside is aware of your presence, obscured as it is by the snowy conditions.

Drew, I need a Climb check and a Stealth check from you, please, to climb the wall and get across the roof without being heard inside.

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Drew stops by the main building and looks/listens before attempting to make his assent to the roof.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir grips his spear as he loses track of the halfling. "Ver did he go?" he mutters quietly to himself.

What is the plan? Is the main entrance (fresh tracks) near S-column or I-column on the map? What if the hostage is in there?

The main entrance to the building is the more western one, near the I column. A secondary entrance is located on the east side of the building, near the S column.

GM Screen:
Rohkar Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Bandit Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 16

Drew scrambles onto the roof of the lodge, the halfling's already light footfalls muffled further by the fresh snow piled atop it.

Drew:
You get to the top of the chimney and, after waiting a few moments, hear no sounds of movement from within and the soft murmur of conversation wafting up the chimney. It seems you haven't been noticed.

Also, for ease of reference, I've added the map of the high sentinel lodge to the campaign info tab.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir shrugs and moves on to the stables out of sight behind the tree line.

that was my original destination, but I don't think we made it yet.

While keeping an eye on Drew to make sure he makes it to the chimney safely, the rest of you make it to the back of the stable without any difficulty.

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Drew will wait for a signal before blocking the chimney

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir frowns at the dwarves with a questioning look and then listens to the stable to see if anyone is within.

perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Wildir:
You hear no voices from within the stable. You do hear the sound of slight movement, though, and the an occasional equine nicker.

Male Dwarf Cleric 1 (favoured class)

Sondergang frowns somewhat as the outhouse is left in the parties rear without anyone checking it.. he halts well clear off the stable waiting for Wildir to give the all clear.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

"Don't sound like nothing but horses. I think ve surprise them, but maybe Drew need to block de back door. Maybe you go back to de sh-t house und gif Drew sign to get de back door." Wildir suggests.

So what's the plan, gentlemen?

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Getting no response from the dwarves around him, Wildir takes matter into his own hands, er claws. Two inch long claws sprout from his calloused hands and he rips open the back of the stable as he shouts to the halfling somewhere above and beyond.

"Bolt de back door, Drew!"

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Drew is startled by the call from Wildir.

He will listen first to see if the call has alerted those within the cabin.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Sovereign Court

Trelck nods to himself as the druid barks the order to the halfling. Certain he is dealing with men, not fey, the dwarf pulls his ax and shield and watches from his position, ready to dash in (as best a dwarf can) as things unfold.

Drew are you going to go bolt the door? I guess the rest of us won't know anyway but I'm with Voodoo, let's get this goin!

Male Halfling Ninja/1

I agree, but I do not want to get to the ground only to have the door fly open and me facing several angry bandits!!! So I will listen first to make sure those inside did not hear as well.

Sovereign Court

Pffft! Caution? What is that? Says the guy with 17 hp...lol

DM Screen:

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
1d20 ⇒ 10

From within the cabin you hear shouts of alarm. It seems obvious that Wildir's shout has drawn the attention of those within. You don't imagine you have more than a few seconds before the bandits inside the cabin come bursting out to find out exactly who is ordering whom to "bolt the back door."

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir continues trying to break and enter the stable the hard way.

strength: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9 +1 strength domain

strength: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 = 25 +1 strength domain

there we go!

Wildir easily breaks down the door into the stable, his bull-ish strength and sudden entrance startling the five horses within.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

bull-ish strength? I'm all bear, baby.
fuggit Drew, smoke 'em if you got'em- Stay up top and snipe. Let us know if they are coming around front.

roll init and let's get this over with...

Fine, bear-ish, then. :P

Giving you guys basically the equivalent of a round before people come out the door to find out what the heck's going on.

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Drew will hunker down and snipe them as they exit the building.

Male Dwarf Cleric 1 (favoured class)

Seeing that there is no possibility of Drew making it to the ground Sondergang indicates to Trelck that they should move towards the back door..

Ok given that anyone coming out the front will have to spend time coming round the building we should try and deal with whatever comes out the back..and then move into the house where we can hjold doorways and stop flankers.

Sovereign Court

Seeing the cleric motion the dwarf fighter nods, axe and shield in hand moving at his best speed since it appears he is not threatened.

Full run to the door on my init.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

all in. My intention is to stampede the horses toward the enemy once they are in sight.

You all hear muffled shouting inside the lodge as whoever is inside attempts to mobilize as quickly as they can to strike back against the perceived assault. The sound of many feet can be heard thudding against the floorboards from inside; most of the noise seems to be heading towards you at the back door.

Within moments, the back door bursts outward, kicked open by a bandit that quickly follows after, obviously too gung-ho to realize that he's running into the arms of a warrior who is prepared to receive him.

I'm going to assume that Trelck is standing in square 9-T. This will allow him to make an AOO against the bandit that's rushing out the door, so go ahead and roll that for me, please. Also, everyone else: please tell me specifically where you are standing on the map; assume you've had time to get to wherever you'd like to get to.

Initiative Rolls:

Wildir: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Trelck: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Sondergang: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Drew: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Bandits: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Rohkar: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Tacey: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Initiative Order:
Tacey -> Rohkar -> Wildir -> Sondergang/Trelck -> Drew -> Bandits

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Wildir scratches his head as everyone appears to rush to the back of the building. Shrugging his hairy shoulders, he forgets the horses murmuring, "Bolt de front door den?" as he checks to see if the front door is unlocked.

maybe I'm misunderstanding this whole front/back thing, but Wildir will try the doors closest to the stable.

Male Halfling Ninja/1

As he was ready to strike on the roof, would Drew not get a surprise attack at whoever came out the door?

Drew lets loose his readied arrow at the second bandit that rushes out the door.

Attack-Range: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 1 + (5) = 8

You're correct, he would. Will post attack results as soon as Trelck posts his action.

Wildir: my assumption has been that the rest of the group was heading towards the eastern-most door; that is the back door of the lodge. The front doors of the lodge are the western doors oriented on a diagonal.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

I just think it's funny that Wildir has no idea what's going on. All these short people keep running all around. ; )
Bears aren't particularly social animals anyway so in through the east door. maybe I can move through and flank. the hard way once again.
