Saint Gudule turns to face the others. "See? It totally worked!"
Frēodwēn

Frēodwēn wonders if there's any approach here other than violence.
is there a check we can make to figure out how to get past it? Some kind of knowledge perhaps?

I can't personally think of any checks to determine a constructs programming just by looking at it. Maybe a sense motive to determine the authenticity of its actions?

Woops sorry formatting went wrong with my last post. I hate posting from mobile (french auto-correct is the worst)...
Gudule smiles back to Baied.
"Well, thanks for acknowledging my true self!"
He strolls around the room humming a song.

Upon closer inspection of the statues to the west and east, you realize that they would slide aside to let you pass if you had the appropriate key or Regnum triggered them manually. The construct isn't happy about you continuing but avoids outright fighting you as you choose east or west.

Ancient Azlanti motifs decorate this hallway’s walls. A single door stands at the center of the north wall opposite a set of double doors leading south.
The double doors are unlocked, but the ornate single door is currently locked (though Regnum will have no trouble getting in).
000dafi03

Wide tables piled high with clockwork limbs, gears, and mounds of emerald crystal fragments line this large room. The north and south walls each hold a single door.
There are three, crystal headed human creatures here. These formerly undead creatures have been imbued with life thanks to emerald crystals embedded in their chests (these cannot be removed). The torsos have now sprouted green crystalline heads, restoring the apprentices to a strange sort of life. They see normally, but do not speak.
These guys are more for flavor than for a challenge. They attack you on sight and you steamroll them.

Heading north
More than a dozen door-sized, green crystal mirrors line the walls of this huge chamber. A balcony looms over the eastern extent of the room, with double doors on the east wall below it.
The Emerald Spire passes through the center of the room, though the spire here has been carved into an elaborate clockwork throne marked with ancient Azlanti symbols. The throne sits at the center of an intricate crystal mechanism situated between massive gears at the floor and ceiling.
Nhur Athemon greets the party. “Ah, it seems the first of my subjects have arrived to do me homage. Be welcome, heroes! You are here just in time to stand witness to my finest hour.” The wizard speaks calmly and with bold confidence, discounting your achievements thus far.
Saint Gudule
|
Gudule pauses and then smirks.
"Guys, I think we took a wrong turn."
Shrugging, the ganzi squints his eyes at the wizard. He begins speaking increasingly fast, asking all sorts of question, barely breathing.
"So you're Nhur Athemon? For how long are you waiting your finest hour? Will the tower begin to walk? Will you suck life out of the people of the world? Will you become a living god? Will you..."

“When last I claimed the throne of Azlant,” he says, “the nobles rejected my supporters as an artificial aristocracy, clockworks and simulacra devoid of true life. But I have conquered death and undeath, and my new nobles shall rise not as mockeries, but as men and women granted true life by my arts!”
With an imperious gesture, Nhur Athemon cackles in victory as humanlike forms composed of emerald crystal emerge from eight of the mirrors, each wielding two swords. Three more emerge from the mirrors on the balcony wielding bows. Nhur Athemon greets these newborn beings as allies, beaming as they hail him as the rightful Emperor of Azlant. As his first act as Emperor. "My first decree as Emperor is to sentence all of you to death." he says as he cackles.

You fire your first bullet in the direction of the lich, but it strikes something midair and falls to the floor. The lich laughs maniacally, "Fool! You think me unprepared for your fire magic!?"

The lich has never seen a firearm before so he just thinks its some kind of magic staff.
Regnum takes out the orange stone soldier with three well-placed bullets.

Let's see, what would Freodwen do?
Barm walks up to the green soldier and cuts his rock body in half.
Trutzburg's first two swings easily hit the soldier, but don't quite hit as hard as he expected (dr/ ?). Either way, he destroyes the soldier with a fantastic critical hit. His third swing aims for the next soldier, but they lock ranks and his blow is thwarted.
Freodwen actives his inspire courage ability (obviously) for +2 hit and damage. He then uses Lore Master to take 20 on his knowledge arcana check to identify the spell that is creating the field around the Lich. Freodwen knows that the invisible field around the Lich is a Wall of Force. He then casts haste on the party for his standard action.
A wall of force is immune to dispel magic, although a mage’s disjunction can still dispel it. A wall of force can be damaged by spells as normal, except for disintegrate, which automatically destroys it. It can be damaged by weapons and supernatural abilities, but a wall of force has hardness 30 and a number of hit points equal to 20 per caster level. Contact with a sphere of annihilation or rod of cancellation instantly destroys a wall of force.
The lich finally gets to act and he is relishing watching you fight his fodder. He casts a spell and a green cloud appears around him, quickly making him vanish from sight. You notice that the cloud essentially tells you where the wall of force is as it doesn't extend past it.
