GM - Mark Garringer |
Yeah that black and white vision is going to get me a few times probably :)
Cererithil does not detect any traps on the door, but does restate the floor directly in front of the door, the door and its handle are coated in a semi-transparent liquid of some kind.
Uilisfuen |
Uilisfuen shakes his head. ”Shall we continue exploring the hallways, skipping the door for now? I’d rather not step into an unknown substance. If we had an extra cloak we could cover it. Or even leaves and small branches could cover it. We’re not so far away from the entrance. We could cut some branches and place them here.”
Cererithil |
Uilisfuen shakes his head. ”Shall we continue exploring the hallways, skipping the door for now? I’d rather not step into an unknown substance. If we had an extra cloak we could cover it. Or even leaves and small branches could cover it. We’re not so far away from the entrance. We could cut some branches and place them here.”
Agreed besides we may never know what we will find at the entrance.
Garnult Tarnhammer |
Bah pick a door, lets smash something Garnult grumbles as he pats his warhammer with his left hand
GM - Mark Garringer |
You can easily return to the surface and acquire such things if you want. Otherwise let me know a direction you'd like to generally explore and we'll continue onward.
Uilisfuen |
”Garnult, Uilisfuen says. ”I don’t think touching that liquid is a good idea. Cutting branches would take only a few minutes. If you’d like to step there and hammer down the door, I won’t stop you.” The elf points to the floor right before the closed door.
Garnult Tarnhammer |
Garnult shrugs, Okay then. and he moves to the spot Uilisfuen pointed to and attempts to open the door.
GM - Mark Garringer |
Garnult moves up, takes two warm up swings with his hammer and then smashes it into the door with all his might! The movement of the hammer is slowed somewhat as it comes into contact with the liquid. Garnult tries to pull the hammer back for another hit, but the hammer is stuck fast in the sticky substance and try as he might, he cannot seem to get it to release his weapon!
Garnult Str: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 1) = 9
Cererithil |
Okaaay - not as expected - let me try fire.
He lights a torch and holds it close to the substance seeking to burn it off.
GM - Mark Garringer |
After holding the torch near the sticky liquid in an attempt to heat or burn it for a few moments, Garnult tries again to pull the hammer free but with no different outcome.
Akmenos from Nowhere |
Maybe this material has been encountered before, let me check my book. I doubt something like this would have much space dedicated to it. Akmenos digs through his book of rappan athuk lore and tries to find reference to some kind of sticky fluid or clear fluid that could have been mentioned in the legends.
Intelligence (History): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Maybe we can chill it? Like Honey? You make it solidify and chisel it out... but I don't have anything that I know that can cause that effect...
GM - Mark Garringer |
Akmenos is unable to find anything specifically helpful in his lore book
GM - Mark Garringer |
It does not seem to really be flowing. IE: It is not heavier or thicker at the bottom near the floor. It seems to uniformly cover the door and surrounding doorframe and wall area with about a 1/4 inch thickness of the strange, sticky liquid.
Lysander Tremayne |
Lysander coughs and speaks up from his position near the back of the party, where he's been keeping an eye on the hall behind them. "So I take it the dwarf's hammer is actually stuck? And we've no plan to remove it?" He shakes his head and grins. "Sounds like we might have to amputate."
GM - Mark Garringer |
Just to make sure it is clear, Garnult's hammer is stuck, but he is free to let go and it just hangs there attached to the wall.
Garnult Tarnhammer |
Bah! Stupid door. I'll get my damned hammer back! Garnult releases his warhammer after tugging on it for nearly an hour.
Ye cain't wizard this stuff away?! Garnult asks the tiefling wizard Akemenos What good are then dammit!
GM - Mark Garringer |
1d20 ⇒ 4 2d4 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3
While discussing possible courses of action, and trying various solutions to the problem, Cererithil notices some hungry looking, giant rats come scurrying around the corner of the northwest hallway coming right toward the party!

Rats!
Akmenos, Garnult, Lysander, and Uilisfeun may act!
Lysander Tremayne |
Lysander responds surprisingly quickly to the sound of rats and Cererithil's bow. Drawing a javelin as he moves, he steps in front of the elf and hurls the weapon forward, trying to spear another of the beasts.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Akmenos from Nowhere |
Akmenos says, At least I am prepared for this! while stepping down the hall and unleashing a noxious plume of poison against the nearest rat he sees. Damned dwarf should just beg his god to intervene.
Poison Spray: 1d12 ⇒ 5
It must make a constitution save against a DC of 13
Garnult Tarnhammer |
Garnult, weaponless, points a finger at a rat and says Torag's Forge Flame burn yer eyes!
Casting Sacred Flame. DEX saving throw DC 12 or take 1d8 ⇒ 6 fire damage
GM - Mark Garringer |
Lysander's javelin clatters harmlessly on the floor behind the giant rat!
Rat Con Save: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16
Akmenos unleashes a poison cloud on the 2nd rat, though the giant vermin seems indifferent to the noxious fumes!
Rat Dex Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
It does, however, take a direct hit from Garnult's fire! The smell of burning hair is quite strong!
The scorched rat rushes forward a Garnult and a third rat comes around the corner and bites Akmenos savagely in the face (with advantage)!
Attack (Garnult): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 *miss*
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Attack (Akmenos): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 *hit*

Lysander Tremayne |
"Akmenos, get back!" Lysander draws his sword, and once the tiefling wizard falls back to give him room, he pushes forward, bringing the weapon down on the oversized rodent.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Cererithil |
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Cererithil fires another shot at a large rodent, an accurate strike.
GM - Mark Garringer |
Lysander and Cererithil finish off the rodents of unusual size!
Out of combat! 15 XP each!
As Lysander goes to retrieve his javelin, he can see further south into another chamber, and a door on the eastern wall beyond that.
More map revealed, where to? What next?
Garnult Tarnhammer |
Garnult says I. Uh. I need a weapon...something heavy if ya please. to the elves, the embarrassment plain on his face that he is now weaponless.
Akmenos from Nowhere |
Maybe there is some method to remove the sticky trap inside this dungeon. Let's press on for now, your spells can do for now, Akmenos says walking close to the hammer adhered to the door, There has to be some clue to this puzzle.
Can I determine anything about how this sticky substance works?
investigation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
GM - Mark Garringer |
Akmenos is able to tell that it is some kind of alchemical creature as opposed to a naturally occurring substance. It has been a bit over 60 minutes since the hammer was stuck to the door, and Akmenos is able to notice a faint, white lattice that seems to have formed between the hammer and the door. Akmenos theorizes it could be drying around the hammer.
Lysander Tremayne |
Lysander raises an eyebrow and looks to the dwarf for a moment, then pulls the javelin quiver from around his shoulders and hands it to Garnult. "I need my sword, it's a symbol of my order. But you can use these in the meanwhile."
Akmenos from Nowhere |
Interesting... It appears that this fluid is some sort of ooze or other manner of creature... (unless you meant "creation") it is probably worth trying to tear it from the door again, the liquid has crystallized immediately around the weapon and might be more brittle now. Maybe two of you lads at once?
He pauses before adding, I bet some dirt or sand could coat this door and force all this fluid to dry completely if we want to try and open the door.
Garnult Tarnhammer |
Garnult grabs his warhammer and tugs STR: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Uilisfuen |
Uilisfuen returns the unused arrow to his quiver. ”Well done,” the elf says to his companions. He pats one of his short swords, ”You can use this Garnult, if we can’t remove your warhammer from the door.”
He watches the dwarf pull on his stuck weapon. ”I have a rope. It might be possible to tie it tight enough on the handle and some of us pull.”
GM - Mark Garringer |
Gah! That was a terrible typo, sorry guys. It is in fact an alchemical creation.
After a few more tries, including a rope, Akmenos does notice that the crystallization does seem to be spreading ever so slightly. Another 30 minutes or so have passed before the entire surface where the hammer is in contact with the liquid has turned into an opaque solid. Garnult is able to easily pull the hammer free with a crackling sound!
Further interactions with the door/liquid? Move on to something else?
GM - Mark Garringer |
To coat the door in the way I am thinking you mean, no. You could go above ground though and get enough to cover, say, the doorknob pretty easily. There is also the gauntlet you found laying on the floor in front of the door.
Cererithil |
Lets get enough dirt to cover the handle from above. The gauntlet and boots could be all that remain of victims and cursed as well.
GM - Mark Garringer |
Ok, so one idea is to head south where the rats came from and another idea is to head topside and see if some progress can be made to open the sticky door. Looking for a consensus or additional ideas before moving on.
Garnult Tarnhammer |
In a PbP its not a good idea to wait on consensus... it'll take forever especially in a dungeon. Doors are the #1 time killer in a PbP from my experience.
Garnult grumbles about elves being overly cautious. Fine then, lets go back outside and get ya some dirt.
Uilisfuen |
”We could use the three rat corpses,” Uilisfuen says as he brings them towards the door. ”Leave them and then come back once the...substance has weakened. One on the door handle and two to make places to step. Now let's go get that dirt.”
GM - Mark Garringer |
If you'd like to take a short rest (1 hour) above ground and/or do any other healing before the kobold encounter, please feel free. Just roll you hit dice if you are going to use it and we'll go from there.
1d20 ⇒ 2
1d6 ⇒ 2
Kobolds 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Akmenos 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Cererithil 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Garnult 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Lysander 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7
Uilisfuen 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Kobolds 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Cererithil 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Garnult 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13
Uilisfuen 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Uilisfuen positions the rat corpses into the sticky liquid, and the party heads above ground to gather dirt to cover the liquid with. As the party returns to the door, Cererithil, Garnult, and Uilisfuen notice a pair of kobolds checking out the door and poking at the rats curiously.
Round 1
Cererithil, Garnult, and Uilisfuen may act!
