condensing all the modifiers

Running the Game

I would really like to see the number of different possible modifiers condensed into a basic array like +2/+4/+8 (and-2/-4/-8) and that's it. no +1 here +5 there, +3? why not! As someone who left PF1 because the number of modifiers was bewildering and annoying to keep track of as a GM (and for teaching new players), I'd like to be able just have a baseline idea of where the modifiers could be rather than a seemingly arbitrary number for everything. This helps a lot with GM adjudication situations, I would know -2 is a minor hindrance and -8 is a big problem. I know it sounds like I am clamoring for advantage/disadvantage, but while I do appreciate the simplicity, it is often a cudgel where one isn't needed.

Let's be real, the d20 die roll matters more than anything, stop with the +1s!!!! :-)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Saga edition used the 1/2 Class level, rounded down, minimum 1, I think, system, and used a flat +5 to be trained in a skill. There were Talents and some feats that gave additional bonuses, but there are/were entries on the character sheet for this additional entry.

This is a great starting point for the next edition of Pathfinder.

Per the thread in the Player Rules subsection on Skills, Feats, etc., there's a real problem with lots of numbers to plug in, especially with the sheer amount of new stuff when comparing PF1 to PF2.

The best solution is possibly a summary somewhere near the front of the Skills Chapter that goes over specifically the fully laid out and listed example of a given Skill case, such as, that Human Fighter they were using from the Character Creation section.

As in, take the mess that is the text of what seems to be the way to figure out the total Skill bonus based on so many options that it is hard to see what each one is, and then just lay out how it works right there.

I know, hand-holding, to some. Well, when one does not have the context of the writers when reading and trying to comprehend the book, all a reader can do is try to figure out what it all means.

Saga also made Skill Focus a +5 from the start. Only problem with that was letting force powers scale a bit too quickly if you nabbed it early. In general Saga used +5 or rerolls for bonuses, not just training. +2 was only for consistently (if not always) applicable damage/defense boosts or something you could give to all allies. Unlike the dozens of +1s (or worse +1 under very narrow circumstances like blindfloded during a sunrise when fighting giants after you spend a standard action to activate it) in PF these were substantial bonuses.
