Fighters and Wands, Wizards and Swords

Prerelease Discussion

According to the latest blog, Feats of Skill, a Fighter cannot use a wand without some other investment, such as the new Trick Magic Item feat (or perhaps Use Magic Device skill if it still exists).

Please please please make it also true that Wizards can't use magic weapons, armor, or any similar combat item without the same type of investment.

If a wand requires a level in a caster class, make magic swords require a level in a martial class.

Whatever it's going to be, just make it work the same for both sides.

It's been mentioned that there is a whole new category of unique martial-only magic items that will be difficult for wizards to use or craft, but that fighters will be able to use easily.

Yeah, like the Owlbear's Claw trinket, which if I read it right can only be used by someone with at least Expert proficiency in the weapon it is attached to. Something most wizards are unlikely to have.

My feeling is I think wand use/previous forms of UMD should be folded into the individual magic skills, as Trained-only skill checks, working the way UMD used to work. Most fighters probably won't take Arcana(ect.), but those that do should get that without feat requirements, and if there is a feat, IMO it should be that you can use any magical tradition's UMD aspect untrained (but the feat that gives it would require trained or maybe even expert in at least one of the traditions).

I really like this idea.

"You told me this claw will make my sword strikes cut deeper"

"No, I said it CAN do that. You are a terrible swordsman and it doesn't want to help you."

Thanks guys!
