Swashbuckler and Fighter Levels

Rules Questions

Hello all!

Quick question - does the Swashbuckler qualify as a Fighter for Combat Feats *only* for its Bonus Feats or for all gained Feats?

For instance, if I was a Fighter level 3 with Weapon Focus and multiclassed into Swashbuckler level 2, would I qualify for Weapon Specialization? Or would I need I need to take another 2 levels in Swashbuckler to grab it?

Grand Lodge

Quote:
At 4th level and every 4 levels thereafter, a swashbuckler gains a bonus feat in addition to those gained from normal advancement. These bonus feats must be selected from those listed as combat feats. Swashbuckler levels are considered fighter levels for the purpose of meeting combat feat prerequisites.

Swashbucklers only get the "considered fighter" Combat feat at 4th lvl. So, until you take a fourth level of either class, you don't qualify as a "fourth level Fighter"

you can't stack Fighter levels- because by all accounts, a Swashbuckler is not a Fighter. They can only take Fighter feats when they get a bonus feat.

No, you would have to take more levels in either fighter or swashbuckler. A swashbuckler is only ever considered a fighter for the swashbuckler bonus feats.

Reading the bolded sentence above I have to disagree with the previous responses. It does not say "bonus combat feats" or "these combat feats" it just says "for the purpose of meeting combat feat prerequisites."

I agree with Java.

Your class counts as fighter. You take fighter levels. That still adds up.

You'll be fine

The Swashbuckler and the Warpriest are from the same book:

Quote:
Finally, for the purposes of these feats, the warpriest can select feats that have a minimum number of fighter levels as a prerequisite, treating his warpriest level as his fighter level.
Quote:
Swashbuckler levels are considered fighter levels for the purpose of meeting combat feat prerequisites.

So while the Warpriest calls out that *only* your bonus feats let you count your levels as fighter levels, the Swashbuckler gets to count all of its levels as fighter levels for combat feats... but only once they have the "bonus feats" class feature.

Yes you'll have to at least have the feature that says they count as fighter levels. I should make that clear.

That seems odd to me. In my mind the wording would be, "Starting at level 4, the Swashbuckler treats its level as Fighter levels for the purposes of qualifying for Combat Feats."

The way it's currently worded seems like an afterthought.

But, I will bow to your collective wisdom.

Thanks all!

BTW - Cavall, does your name come from Arthurian stories?

It's not the first class feature that does multiple semi-related things. Compare a Paladin's Aura of Resolve: "At 8th level, a paladin is immune to charm spells and spell-like abilities. Each ally within 10 feet of her gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against charm effects." The second part only starts at 8th level as well, without additional mention of that.

It does indeed, as well as being a play on my name.

I could have swore that all hybrid class counted as both of their parent classes. Perhaps that was playtest though seeing as brawler specifically called it out as a class feature.

The subtle problem here is that the Swashbuckler class description lacks any statement that the effective Fighter levels from the Swashbuckler class stack with the actual Fighter levels from the Fighter class. That is a big point with many classes and archetypes in the Advanced Class Guide.

Yes, that language was in the playtest, but was dropped from the final ACG classes.
