Advice

Guys I really need some advice with an issues here,

In my current game we have a player who is playing a LE ninja/assassin and the campaign is coming to a close. The GM now wants to run a homebrew that I really want to play a LE ninja/assassin but I don't want to just come across as playing the same thing.

Does anyone have some words of advice for me?

Look at other features about the current character, and make sure you are doing some of them differently. Race, preferred fighting style and weapon and secondary skills come to my mind immediately. What is the other player doing for these? What are you thinking of?

You could also play a different class following the theme, slayer or alchemist could be very ninjalike without trying hard, for example.

Well I want to play a one handed wielding ninja who wants to become an assassin. There is differences in race and backstory is vastly different but mechanically not much would be different.

You could also try roleplaying in combat. Several articles there. LE has a zillion variations too. Check if the other players have a problem.

If the character itself is different, then there's not really an issue.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Just make sure he's different in some way from the original. In our groups we have a lot of "Oh... you're going to play a Magus, I have one I want to play to too... I'll play him next game," conversations. Magus, Kinetisist, and Oracles are very popular in our group with a lot of people wanting to 'claim' them.

My suggestions are...

1) Make sure the original player knows your interest and why... You don't want it to come across as 'Your Ninja sucked, this is how 'I' Think it should have been played.' MOst of these classes have a thousands fun character ideas... just don't act like yours is the 'right way' to have done it.

2) Look at the archetypes, races, attitude/motivation. Maybe even look at some other classes too that can achieve the same character but with different mechanics. Going with Rogue or monk/Gunslinger sniper style may be the same thing as your planning with Ninja/assassin.

Deep down, what mechanics you use shouldn't make your character 'a copy' provided the character personality/attitude/motivation RP stuff is vastly different.

Also... if you want to just hang a lampshade on it, ask if it's ok to be the other characters brother/cousin etc. from the same ninja clan. If your character is too similar... run with it :)

I had a very similar situation come up about 2 years ago, we were making a 3 man game where evil was fine if lawful, my buddy picked ninja first.

I went with slayer, cleaner specifically.
It worked out great.

Also unchained rogue is also amazing.

Grand Lodge

Maybe a slayer instead?

Can you break down exactly what abilities / flavor you wanted to emulate?

There is a problem? I very often play characters that are "clones" of a given concept in different games, and if hte game is good, they'll evolve very differently and achieve individuality.

Perhaps a Bard? They're significantly different in "feel" from Ninjas, but can mimic a Ninja-style of play just fine.

And no-one ever suspects the fop...

that vigilante archetype that is basically a ninja.

Teisatsu, right. Changing the class name might help a lot.

Stygian slayer can fit the slightly mystical ninja motif nicely as well.

yes that is the one couldn't remember the name.
