Gadgeteer styled class

Advice

hi, I was wondering if anyone has any advice for a gadgeteer styled character. my first instinct was to look at the alchemist, but despite my love of bombs. I'm not a fan of elixirs and mutagens. I want a more gadget focused character than drug focused, so maybe more smokescreens and traps etc.

I was also looking at constructs and various modifications, like the construct amour and construct limb stuff. but its all very expensive and lower levels have no way of getting or using this stuff without it most likely breaking the game.

I'm also not against guns for the sake of this build so yeah, does anyone have any suggestions. I don't know if there is already an alchemist archetype that does what I'm asking.

If you're not afraid of 3pp stuff, you could look at the Pure Steam Campaign Setting and the Gearhead class. It's played similarly to the Alchemist in my opinion (not actually played with the class as the only DM I've played with wasn't a fan of 3pp), but you create various different gadgets and things instead of infusions and mutagens.

yeah, I want to stay away from third party stuff. cheers anyway.

Cohorts & Companions has the Construct Rider archetype, which might give some of the flavor you're looking for. You could also try and flavor some of your extracts as being gadgets instead of drugs.

For example, a shield extract becomes a force-field generator, and jump is a modified pair of boots.

How about going with a Trapper Ranger? In addition to being able to set up a multitude of traps, you'll also be a very capable combatant with full BAB - the only thing it replaces is spell casting.

yeah I was looking at that archetype and it does look pretty awesome. I just wish that the construct companion wasn't as limited. I mean even if you didn't want to give them a crazy expansive list, you could of at least gave them the same options rangers got. I'd love a mecha wolf that at level 7 became a large wolf that a medium character could ride.

I also wish that construct amour and construct limb were able to be implemented. how cool would it be if you could transform your construct wolf and wear it like gagitised amour. or have a smaller construct like a hawk being able to become a construct limb.

the more I think about this the more I want to actually build a gadgeteer class haha.

that actually looks pretty cool, especially the 10th level ability. that could be awesome if paired with alchemist bombs.

Tinkers! Interjection Games has made several supplements to support it!

If you want something like that, there is a Summoner archetype (can't remember the name right off the bat) that allows you to basically fuse with the eidolon and share abilities. You could just have the eidolon look like a mech for flavor.

Impossible Sorcerer has Construct-based flavor? There's also Craft (Clockwork) and clockwork/doll constructs too. There's a whole bunch of Mending/Repair spells that complement this that aren't on the bloodline list as well...

Synthesist. Down side is it is banned by most GMs.

You could go unchained summoner and have an inevitable eidolon. Your eidolon is half outsider, half construct. It basically becomes more and more construct as you level up.

You could take the monsterous mount feat. Get yourself a clockwork griffin

Play a Spellslinger Wizard. Either have your arcane bond be a utility belt, or find out which familiar looks like some sort of bag. Have all your spells flavored as 'Gadgets'. Or you could try the same as an Arcanist, but I don't know much about them.

Would a normal gunslinger seem that way? Especially given the nature of the first-level stuff, you could say that your starting weapon is a crappy prototype that no-one else can use. Keep Craft (alchemy) up of course, and you can make your own stuff for that. Maybe dip alchemist (or alchemist and dip gunslinger)?

machinesmith pretty much has exactly what you want.

Like a lot of people have said, this is a niche that has been better filled by 3PP. If you are looking to stay Paizo, maybe this would work for you?
