It is indeed! It's one of my favorite old books.

Okay, that's on my list of things to buy when I have the extra money. :P It's a little expensive. :)

A kitten on a tree stump:)
i'd been ambushing them with Wolf's in Sheep's Clothing for quite awhile so when I just put a simple little kitten on a stump in the courtyard they didnt know what to do!

alas no one suspected the baby goat sitting in the hay stack in the stable;)

Something eerie and unknown is coming down the corridor adjacent to the room they're in, rumoured to be invincible and they know it. The room has an enchantment which makes only half-speed movement possible. The other exit is far, far away that way.

Oh lovely, it's that recurring nightmare that nearly everyone has.

My recurring nightmares always had me being chased by men in black because they thought I was an alien, even tho I knew I wasn't.

There's an Idea.. A magical Tin Foil hat that allows you to cast Invisibility x number of times a day. It is cast by putting the hat on, but when you attack or do something to break the spell, the hat falls off.... That needs to go in the Weird custom magical items thread methinks. :D

I once had a dungeon that was the tower for a crack pot halfling wizard, the whole thing was sized for a halfling, and of course everyone was ahuman, pissed them off!
also the place was lousy with kobold barbarians

Was their Leader an Emperor Kobold from the Collected Monsters of Sin? lol

There was an issue of Dungeon (or maybe Dragon ...) that had one of my favorite adventures. It was a delve into a long dead wizard's sanctum where the magic items (i.e. the loot) were also part of the traps/hazards.

Among other things, it featured gems such as
- room sized bag of holding that players unknowingly crawl into at the end of a tunnel
- room with uncorked ever smoking bottle hidden within guarded by air elementals
- large pit concealed in darkness with an (iron?) golem waiting

ha! i've never seen that! no, stated them out myself:)
one of the few monsters i've done:)
but yes it was hilarious!
"what you mean its not dead! its a Kobold how many hit points can it possibly have!?!" me: a lot:) lol

That PDF is awesome. I bought it and am using some of the monsters in one of my One shot modules I wrote for an upcoming Gaming convention. The Emperor Kobold is one of them. :D

Ha! That's funny.

Hmm... cool. I thought you were going to go with the Hall of Wooden Men kind of thing.

Once long ago (I think it was 2nd ed) we were on a series of quests for some Muckity.

Open the door to this large room with a couple dozen marble statues of fighting men. The cleric immediately used the scroll of earthquake she had been hording since there was no way we could handle fighting that many golems in our battered condition. Brought the stone building down on top of the statues.

The GM choked on his pop and turned purple because he couldn't breathe through his laughter.

Over the weeks of the campaign, seems we had forgotten that we were to retrieve a life size marble chess set.

Oh boy, I would have been choking on my beverage too! That's too funny!

Lol! bet you wish you could have that one back :D

But sir! The chess set was threatening us! We had no choice but to destroy it!

Yeah, he was wondering what we were going to come up with to try and remove and transport the statues. And then ...

Back then there was no spell like "Make Whole." So we spent the next several weeks camped in a dangerous area protecting the wizard while he researched a spell to fix them and removing the rubble so we could fix them.

We were all so proud of ourselves too. He, he, we didn't fall for your stupid animate statue trap this time mister DM!

I think I'm gonna have to do that. I'll actually give them a hat made of kitchen foil.

Gives Mind Blank
side effects:
-2 on all social skills and -2 to AC for anyone wearing armor that would have had a helmet as part of it.

Okay, I'm being lazy. Someone tell me what Mind Blank does. :) I like the -2 on social skills and on AC that should have a helmet (I'm guessing things like full plate?)

Although, very few of the minis actually show the Paladin types in full plate actually wearing helmets...

don't forget the voices, you gotta hear voices;)

Mind Blank

School abjuration; Level sorcerer/wizard 8
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one creature
Duration 24 hours
Saving Throw Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)

The subject is protected from all devices and spells that gather information about the target through divination magic (such as detect evil, locate creature, scry, and see invisible). This spell also grants a +8 resistance bonus on saving throws against all mind-affecting spells and effects. Mind blank even foils limited wish, miracle, and wish spells when they are used in such a way as to gain information about the target. In the case of scrying that scans an area the creature is in, such as arcane eye, the spell works but the creature simply isn't detected. Scrying attempts that are targeted specifically at the subject do not work at all.

Gives continual Mind Blank

side effects:
Bestows a -2 on all social skills (look stupid wearing a tin hat), -2 on stealth (wearing a shiny hat), and -2 to AC for anyone wearing armor that would have had a helmet as part of it (foil hat doesn't protect much against weapons).
Additionally the wearer has a -2 on perception checks due to the distraction from the voices whispering in her head.

Meh, Mind Blanks is okay. I prefer invisibility tho.

All your worst/awesomest homebrewed ideas.

Potions such as kender might have at home / in their pouches
"Potion of mighty pissing"
if they try that one the next one is
"Potion of flame pissing"

basically they functioned very similar to the hydrolic push and fiery breath potions.....

I mean the mechanics of how they work would remain the same.

(Possibly) obligatory foil hat...

I think the men in black like the hats... it tells them where to aim the tranquilizers.

A trap that sets off an Unnatural Lust spell on whoever set it off.

An ordinary bottle of wine sitting on a pedestal in the middle of a room with a sign saying "drink me".
they expend so many resources trying to figure out the trap and never ever drink it or even touch it:)

5 people marked this as a favorite.

If you really want to mess with them, you put a teeny tiny door in one wall that opens into the illusion of a room full of treasure. :D

Same room as the ordinary bottle of wine on the pedestal with the sign that is. :D

A little girl holding a doll, asking in an overly sweet voice:
"Will you play with me?"

It could even be a disguised succubus, for the fools who don't keep their distance.

A white rabbit with a pocket watch and top hat.

A long table with multiple tea sets strewn across it. The bones of a human, a bunny, and a mouse are sitting in chairs at the end, all impeccably dressed, and the human's got a really BIG top hat.

Scratched into the table, are the words. "Still waiting for you"

I tried the rabbit thing my daughter and got super excited and were like "oh my god! This is gonna be the best tea party ever!

This one can be slotted into anything that requires the party to invade a crypt. Specifically, when they don't know which crypt and need to invade all of them.

One crypt leads them down into a waterway, quite possibly the sewers, with bones and skeletons littering the walls. They hear faint bard singing with a (galt/'not france') accent. On the next round, they're ambushed by thugs in skeleton suit disguises that were blending in.

Speaking of bunnies:

A cave, filled with bones of various classes, clearly the cream of the cream,.....out comes this albino rabbit.

two crypts, both super long and deadly, a real accomplishment! whichever one they choose first, when they get to the last chamber there's a note in the coffin that says "wrong door a&$#~!+s!"

by this time they're so pissed off it doesn't even matter whats in the other one, they. are. done! lol yes i did this:)

on top of a tower, an Android Conjurer (or summoner if you prefer) sits on a throne with two Yeth Hounds beside her, oh yes and a really bad hair style. the first thing She asks "Are You a God?" any thing other then a "yes" results in chain lightning to the entire party:)

also i will give someone money if they'll run carrion crown with this being the end:)

Bonus points if she's a summoner with her Eidolon sized Huge and made of marshmallow.

Try The Snape Maneuver: The BBEG turns out to be on the same side as you - and the real BBEG was someone who'd been hiding in plain sight.

Even more impressive...

The Lucifer Scenario: As the PCs learn about the campaign world, gradually guide them to waking up to the unavoidable conclusion that the BBEG represents the GOOD GUYS of the campaign, and the party's been working for the wrong side the whole time! CHAAANGE PLACES!!!

Reign of Winter seems sort of related to this, but with 2 big differences:

Spoiler, just in case:

1. You are working for 1 Supreme Villain against another.
2. You know this from a fairly early point, unless you've been living in a hole since before the founding of Irrisen.

More here -- doesn't seem like you have any way out of working for one or the other except by bailing entirely. (And nobody took me up on my Curse of the Crimson Throne question either.)

@ArtemisMoonstar: Shouldn't that be a Colossal Eidolon made of marshmallow? (Oops -- Eidolons can't be larger than Huge. Maybe Summoner is not so OP after all . . . .)

I did something evil to my party once playing deadlands, then again how can you not. party was exploring a section of woods that was going to be cut down for farmland. They were getting paid some cash and a percentage of the next 10 years profit as they owned the land. As they were walking I had them make cog checks (perception) and one person realized that there were no animals around. Not even small animals like rabbits. Well until the party came across a squirrel in a tree. Nobody suspected a thing yet until the posse decided to split up. I had come up with an amalgam creature called the grizzly squirrel (mix of a few different systems creatures and made it for this system). It picked one of the party members, burrowed into his rib cage, and sat there. There was some dark magic involved and the player failed his perception checks to notice the blood, or the fact that he was being eaten.

Posse gets back together and I texted each of the party members except the bloody one. I didn't want to use notecards for this, and the look of horror on their faces as they had to pry a squirrel out of a man's ribcage as he jumped around trying to get his armored coat off... btw it could chew through steel. Oh, that was a glorious day. The player lived, although not without some consequences, and they learned never to trust me again after that.

I loved the magic 8-ball!

My cousin had one. So the four of us would sit around asking it questions late at night. I don't recall it giving very accurate answers but sometimes the answers it gave were hilarious. I guess that was the real point of it.

I did leave a fey food banquet for them once. The group had to rush into a time sensitive mission after consuming all those crazy random effects (effects I didn't have kick in till a random amount of time had passed). It was a blast.
